hey guys what's up i'm dr lindsay welcome back to my channel and today i'm going to teach you guys how much to feed your new puppy today i'm here with luke who's a six month old aussie doodle and i'm going to show you guys how much he eats on a daily basis but in this video i'm really going to focus on that new puppy that you're bringing home and how much you should be feeding it so i have all these bowls here to show you guys that you need to feed your new eight week old puppy three times a day so a lot of places will sell you a puppy like from a pet store and tell you to feed them twice a day but that is really not right a puppy that's eight weeks old to about four months old needs to be fed three times a day they are growing little babies so if you have a job where you're super busy or you can't get home in the middle of the day to feed them and give them water please make sure you have family support or friend support to help you feed your new baby all right guys so let's play puppy chef right now so i'm going to open this bag of dog food here and give you guys a dog breed and we're going to make food for that puppy all right so i'm going to go ahead and open this science diet puppy food and this comes in a pretty small kibble that you can use for all the breeds i'm gonna mention okay before i get started we need to know our cups because this is like a huge solo cup so that is a lot more food than a measured out cup so this is truly one cup and then this is probably like two and a half or even three cups so if you look at them together you see the size difference so you need to make sure you're measuring with one cup okay so let's see the first puppy we're gonna feed is a maltese puppy that is three pounds and you just pick that puppy up from the breeder and you got home and you need to feed that puppy so i'm gonna look at the bag and it shows that a three pound puppy gets about one cup of food so one and a half to one cup of food throughout the day so i'm gonna go in this bag and fill up one cup of food all right so that's what our whole cup of food looks like to feed this puppy today so i have my bowls ready to show you how much food this puppy will get three times a day so i'm just gonna sprinkle some food in there sprinkle some food in here put a little food in this bowl it's a little weird looking bowl compared to the other ones okay so there we go i doled it all out looks pretty even and then i like to mix wet food into the puppy food in case the puppies like eating wet food um so i'll show you that at the end how i mix in the wet food into their dry food so this is all the hard food kibble that you'll feed that maltese today but sometimes i like to mix in some puppy wet food just in case the puppy prefers eating this over the kibble so i like to offer them both okay so for your second puppy that's a medium-sized puppy you're gonna bring home a corgi that's eight weeks old and weighs about seven to ten pounds so if we refer to our chart on the bag it says a ten pound puppy will eat about one and three fourths cup of food a day so that is just under two cups of puppy food so i'm gonna take my one cup measuring cup and dole out the food into the bowls so as you can see i have a little bit bigger bowl sizes so i'll put about 3 4 cup in there and then fill the rest of the other cups so here's about my second cup of puppy food and the rest for dinner so that's about as much puppy food that your new corgi is going to want to eat all right so for our last puppy it's going to be a large breed puppy so let's say you got a rottweiler puppy and maybe you also got a great dane puppy because you're that crazy and that is something i would do so a rottweiler puppy at eight weeks old will be around i would say 15 pounds so maybe eight or nine weeks old they'll be around 15 pounds and then a great dane puppy could be around the same weight too so let's look at 15 pounds so we'll go to 10 to 20 pounds in between here so that can be about two to three cups of puppy food so let's do two and a half cups and i'll dole that out into these big bowls and just get big bowls to start with because those puppies will quickly grow into them all right so let's get all this puppy food so we'll do about one cup there [Applause] like a little less than a cup for lunch and then a little less than a cup for dinner all right so that's how much food you can offer your 15 pound puppy okay guys so i hope this gave you a great visual of how much food to feed your new puppy so this is how much food you'll feed them until they're about four months old and spread it out three times a day once your puppy gets bigger like luke who's around six months old you can scale back their feedings to about twice a day and then use that chart to go over how much to feed them depending on their weight for the people who bought a toy breed puppy like a maltese or a yorkie or a toy poodle i want to add that you need to supplement them with some sort of sugar about two to four times a day because these puppies can get hypoglycemic which is low blood sugar and have sugar crashes and some of them can have seizures and they can die so i care about your new puppy so i want to talk to you guys about nutracal which is an amazing supplement i'm not sponsored by this supplement at all but hey maybe one day but i just wanted to let you know to go to your vet or a pet store and pick this up if you're getting a very tiny puppy and to start supplementing them with this and that's going to make your life a whole lot easier so nutrical is a sugar supplement with vitamins and minerals so i recommend putting a glob size on your finger or you could put some on top of the puppy food and see if your puppy just comes up and eats it too much is not gonna hurt them obviously don't feed them the whole tube use common sense um but i put it on my finger um a good size blob and then i will open their mouth and put it on the roof of their mouth just scrape it up there and the puppies normally just swallow it some puppies will just lick this right off my finger because it's sugar so who doesn't like sugar all right so luke is six months old so he eats twice a day and i have prepared two cups of hard food for him to have right now so on the chart it says that he gets about four cups a day so he gets two cups for breakfast and then two cups for dinner so while luke is eating his food i'm going to show you guys how i mix the wet food in with the dry food and be a doggy chef right now for you guys you're gonna see me next on doggie chopped dr lindsay preparing gourmet meals for dogs here we go so you take off that can cap so i have about a cup of food in here and luke gets two cups so i'm gonna put his two cups in here and then i'm just gonna add in some of this wet food so i'll probably do like one-fourth of a can so you just go ahead and use a spoon and put that wet food in there like that and then i just break it up in there and dogs really love this so if you want to spoil your dogs like i do you can mix in some wet food with their dry food dinner is served luke you want more food oh gosh luke is getting spoiled today look at him go and just devour it he loves this so as you can see luke is trying to pick out the wet chunks of food from the bowl because that stuff is really delicious for them of course i haven't tried the dog wet food maybe one day but they sometimes try to eat around the hard food and just eat the wet food so it's up to you if you want to feed your dog's wet food like i said i feed him that um and my dogs really enjoy it good boy nice good boy all right guys thank you for watching this video of dr lindsay being a doggy chef today and chef luke helping me out today to
