we just walked the Camino France from St Jean port to Santiago de compostella from September 4th to September 29th during those 26 days we tracked every single Euro we spent on everything from alberes and dining to coffee wine and even a new pair of socks for each of us in total we spent 2,593 for both of us so that's about ,300 each which breaks down to 9976 per day for both of us or €49 88 cents per person per day so about €50 a person a day it's yeah it's almost exactly 50 per person per day can you tell we love spreadsheets we know that everyone walks at their own pace on the Cino francise so we think it's really important to do a budget breakdown based on our per day spending so that you can adjust that for more or fewer days on the the trail as you figure out how long you're going to be doing the Camino Fran so we're going to get into the nitty-gritty of everything we spent money on including where we had the highest costs where we could have saved money and tips so you can save money on your Camino Frances spoiler alert it was mostly just two categories so here's a quick breakdown of everything we spent on the communo frace during the peak season so you know how much the Cino friends costs I'm Sean and I'm Lany and this is days we spend talking about our money that we spent we broke our communo spending down into 11 specific categories here they are in order of the most money we spent to the least dining alberes alcohol stuff groceries Health coffee fun junk food fees and Gifts our biggest category we spent was dining and that was 1,00 ,13 total for both of us so that breaks down to € 21 and 41 cents per person per day yeah not so bad so our dining budget includes anything that we ate out or in a cafe anything that was prepared for us trail mix on the road or if we like made sandwiches that wasn't dining sometimes this category included our alcohol and coffee if it was part of something we were eating or part of our meals we didn't cook that much on the Frances because we'd already been walking for over a month so we were just getting a little burned out and tired we only cooked four times we could have saved a lot of money in this category if we cooked a lot more some people don't cook at all some people cook five times a week it's really up to you even eating out multiple meals per day we were still right around 20 21 per person which is pretty good for a little more clarity our most expensive meal we splurged and got TI food that was €37 so about $18.50 per person and we got the pilgrim meal 11 times which is actually more than I expected like looking at the numbers was interesting uh it was € 276 for all of our Pilgrim meals so about $1250 per person so only about a6e difference between our most expensive meal and the average Pilgrim meal so that should tell you something about the price of a pilgrim meal the price has definitely crept up it was probably around 9 or 10 back in the day I'm telling you all this so that you know that even if you try to budget and only have the pilgrim meal you're still going to end up spending around 12 or 13 just for dinner yeah and honestly if you're a person who really wants to try some of the more fancy Cuisines then you're actually going to spend a lot more we don't really eat seafood so if you're going to be eating a lot of the seafood dishes it's going to be more expensive no matter where you go when you eat out you go through a few Big Towns Pamplona Bergos Leon those are dining destinations so you could easily spend €100 on a big dinner with two people and and and all that and we didn't so that's important to know if you want to budget for splurging U there are a few cities along the way where that's a great option our next biggest category was accommodation so we spent 821 56 for both of us which breaks down to €1 1580 per person per day we were actually shocked at this number that number is amazing is we had a couple nights that we thought blew our budget we splurged three times a night in an Airbnb in Pamplona with some friends that was €85 for the both of us another one was €70 in Leon we got something on booking.com it was lovely right near the cathedral and then we spent 50 in Burgos again on booking.com for a hotel room for a hotel room which was great 50 is not that much more above it our lowest accommodation was €14 for the both of us at Kasa karma in Sans Soul part of why we picked it was it was a seveny old placez it's just like a No Frills place but it was perfect for what we needed if you're okay like walking down two flights of stairs to the bathroom yeah and our cheapest private accommodation was €28 for a private room with a shared bathroom so 14 a person all told drum roll sand effect we spent 19 kns in different types of alberes the most expensive was 18 and again the cheapest was s and we spent seven nights in some kind of private accommodation either hotel or um private room because we've done the Camino before we were actually really particular about where we were staying and picking some of the towns based on where we could get the most affordable accommodation rather than just staying at all the stage endings where the guide books tend to Clump people I think those stage endings are the most expensive places to stay cuz the alberg know that there's so many people going to stay there so an easy way to save money is just try to stay off off stage or you can partake in the bed race and try to stay in all the municipal Al burges which are by far the cheapest on the quino they're cheap but you pay a price with your body it's important to remember that these numbers are from peak season can be tough to get a bed in the very crowded municipales so you might want to raise your budget and factor in a few more private accommodations just so you have a little bit more peace of mind our next most expensive category which is kind of a bummer is alcohol we spent $19 0 about 350 per person per day on alcohol because beer and wine in Spain are very affordable I actually wrote a piece on medium I'll maybe put the link in the description or on my face about how much I love the affordability of Spanish wine you can find Excellent wine for one or2 per glass and often times you can find bottles for five or six in a grocery store or AA we were generally a lot more social on this Camino than we typically typically are on some of our past ones CU when you're with a group of friends you're with a group of people or maybe you meet new friends we tend to drink a little bit more since you're hanging out at the bar so if you want to cut your budget just maybe don't hang out at the bar if you want to save your budget don't talk to anyone or do anything you'll you'll you won't spend any money our fourth largest category was stuff which is anything that was non-consumable and this breaks down to €47 total or €83 per person per day so in this category it was things that we bought along the way which was each of us had to buy new socks cuz our socks got holes in them my sunglasses broke had to get some new ones Sean's phone charger broke we also shipped a box of things from Pamplona to Santiago via the pilgrim post cuz we just didn't want to carry some stuff we' had from France so most of these things we bought you won't need to do because you'll pack very carefully and you won't spend 30 days days before you get onto the Camino Frances so your gear won't be breaking by then we walked from leou on valet we'd already walked 750 kmers by the time we got to sanan pport so a lot of our stuff was on its last legs groceries is another category we spent 125 on groceries about $240 per person per day this is snacks bread cheese meat sandwich stuff picnic things anytime we cooked dinner or lunch yeah we had a few picnics it's always nice to have a sandwich and bag for like long days where you're in between towns go grocery shopping even if it's just for light snacks but we definitely could have spent more in this category but we only spent 125 which is really good well we also were really good at just buying exactly what we know we're going to eat cuz if you carry too many snacks with you it's a bunch of weight just shop for a little bit at a time that way you're not carrying six oranges when you only need one our next category was health and we spent €68 80 total breaks down to €1 32 per person per day this covers things like sunscreen a massage I got it one of the alberes um some stuff at the pharmacy like Arnica Gel I had to get some hearing aid stuff so sometimes you'll have things in this category and you may not depending on what you brought from home and what you need so it's just important to have a little flexibility in your budget for stuff you don't necessarily anticipate for the health category so an important note is we actually live in Spain so we have private Spanish health insurance so we did not buy any travel insurance for this trip the last time we hiked Kino frace we did have travel insurance I think it was from World Nomads we we've also used Alliance before I think it was Alliance here we haven't bought uh travel insurance in a while so do your own research but it's typically around two bucks a day maybe three these days I don't know if the price has gone up but that would definitely be something you'd want to add to your Camino I highly recommend it it also covers your gear and your bag in case anything is lost or stolen you can make a claim we've made travel insurance claims in the past it's worth every penny coffee is our next category we set it in its own category cuz we love coffee we spent €60 30 a little over a euro per person per day which is wonderful I could never hike the communo without coffee could you oh definitely not coffee in Spain is very affordable so if you like coffee you're in luck cuz it's super cheap this category was if we had a second coffee or a third coffee not coffee with our breakfast that was in our dining category yeah I guess technically if we had a coffee with like a croissant that was breakfast whatever man we had a lot of coffee next was fun so that was € 4250 total or 79 cents per person per day and these are just things like visiting Cathedrals that's fun to me museums or cloysters or if we spent money at a festival along the way these are things that you're going to spend money on for entrance fees because it's not free for pilgrims some places will have discount tickets for pilgrims but it's not free it takes a lot of upkeep to make a medieval Building look nice I mean I was a little surprised my first Cino that it wasn't free entrance but of course it's not free yeah it's a museum it's not just a church so our last three categories are junk food fees and gifts we didn't spend a ton of money on each so we're just going to Breeze through them junk food got its own category because I don't know it's not really gross when you buy a big bag of candy at least to me we like to have the occasional splurgy snack we only spent €20 total on junk food I guess that'd be like ice cream anything like that candy licorice yeah chocolate milk chocolate milk licorice fees there was only one fee we used our local Spanish bank card and it was A3 fee to use an ATM we've used Charles Schwab in the past it's free to use any ATM in the world they reimburse you so check with your Bank what your International ATM fees are cuz you might get slammed with fees like I did on my first Camino yeah if you're withdrawing every other day it does add up cards are accepted at a lot more places than they used to be you can use your credit card to pay for many alberes but I still recommend having a little bit of cash on you just to make sure that you can pay for things in smaller towns and our last category gifts we spent 78 cents which is 2 cents per person per day and that was to send a postcard do we need break we broke it down on we did a daily breakdown for one postcard that's how much we love budget spreadsheets we've walked the Kino frace twice once in 2017 and again in 2023 we've also walked a bunch of other kamino routes the Primitivo the Norte the Ino you can check out some of our other videos where do you where do you want to put them the Cino France St spending on this trip was very typical a tiny bit higher than I'd like but it's in line with what we expected to spend that's just our ontrail budget to be very clear so those 26 days that we were walking including that very first night of our accommodation and our spending in St Jean port €50 a day is a really great number that gives you the flexibility to eat well to book nicer accommodation if you want you can scrimp a little or you can also get that extra glass of wine with your meal I don't consider ourselves budget Travelers but I do think that we're really budget conscious we don't want to deny ourselves any that we want while we're on the road but we are really careful with where we're planning to stay and sometimes where we eat out for a lot of people the Cino Frances is a once in a-lifetime experience and it's okay to spend more on something if you know you're never going to be there again so thanks everyone so much for watching make sure you subscribe and hit the Bell so you can get notifications on our future adventures and if you haven't already
