hi thanks for joining me in another video today the most common questions I get asked about electric vehicles are how long does it take to charge and how much does it cost to charge today we'll be talking about the cost aspect of charging and how to save some money if you own an EV let's begin [Music] it's by far the best way to charge your car not only is it the most convenient it's also the cheapest it's important to understand that the examples I'll Supply are from my area these costs change by location and your utility company so you'll have to look up the cost where you live I'll pull some real world data for my electric provider SRP let's start with the basic price plan and we'll do some quick math for how much it costs to charge my standard range plus Tesla Model 3 from zero percent battery up to 100 percent right now I'm in the winter months so we're looking at 8.76 cents per kilowatt hour the battery in my car is 55 kilowatt hours in size so 8.76 cents times 55 gets us 4.81 cents all right I guess that's the end of the video we now know how much it costs to charge just kidding there are some efficiency losses so the cost might be a little bit higher but we're talking a few extra cents not dollars also that zero to 100 cost is actually pretty unrealistic that's not something I ever do I only use about 10 to 20 of my battery every day so that 4.81 cost would be more weekly or bi-weekly depending on how much I drive that week let's talk savings utility providers offer many different plans to help you save money if your provider offers a time of use plan or an AV plan it's worth checking out time of use plans save you money by having you shift your energy hungry task to times of the day when the grid is less stressed looking at srp's EV charging plan the price of energy between 11 pm and 5 AM is only 6.69 cents so if we charge our car during these hours we'll save some money most EVS have a function which allows you to schedule your charging so you'll still plug in your car just you normally would but it waits to start charging until it's scheduled that way you can get the cheapest fuel doing the same example of charging 0 to 100 on the special EV plan rates get our costs down to 3.68 you can't argue with the price like that it's cheap you can also offsite your cost using rooftop solar and battery backup systems bigger battery Vehicles like a ruby or GMC Hammer Ruby will end up costing more to charge since their battery is much larger and they're less efficient vehicles so that's just something to keep in mind if you're purchasing a larger size EB next example what about costs if you're using a level 2 public charger each charging company is going to have different prices this is a blink charger which costs 39 cents per kilowatt hour let's plug in my car which is at 20 and I'm going to leave it here and charge it up to 80 percent okay plug in our adapter right start charging all right we're done charging total cost for this session was 11.69 as promised here are a few money saving tips for public level 2 Chargers some charging companies will offer member benefits and give you discounted prices some may have free membership others will have monthly fees what is nice about public charges is that you can find some that even offer free charging if you download the plugshare app you can sort by fee and it will pull up stations that are free one popular provider is Volta this company offers level 2 Charging at no cost and you will likely find these at shopping plazas even better they don't require you to use the app to start a charge for a level 2 charger just plug it in if you're traveling check the hotel you're staying with and see if they offer free charging for their customers my favorite is when attractions offer this as an example the Phoenix Zoo has set up about 20 free Chargers lastly let's look at the costs from DC fast charges that you will use when traveling let's check the cost of three most popular DC fast charging companies in the US Tesla Electrify America and evgo it's becoming more common that companies which provide DC fast charging are also offering time of use rates as well so similar to charging at home your charging will be cheaper at night or in the morning while most charging stations are priced based off energy usage there are some that are still time based this is typically influenced by the loss in your state starting off with Tesla let's charge up and see what it costs the price at this Tesla Supercharger right now is 41 cents per kilowatt hour the car is at 20 percent and we're going to charge it up to 80 percent all right we're done charging at 80 and the cost was exactly 12 dollars as I said earlier some charging station fees are based off time for instance when I charge the Ford F-150 Lightning at evigo it was charged per minute I charge 59.82 kilowatt hours and it came out to 10.64 cents whereas charging the Lucid air was based on energy used I charged 83.14 kilowatt hours the Fiat Electrify America was 43 cents per kilowatt hour so our total came out to 38.76 for time-based billing it's best if you have a faster charging car but if you have a Chevy bolt or Nissan Leaf with the slower charging rate you'll end up paying more it's not a very fair system so many states have changed so you only pay for what you use now to some money saving points for fast charging charging companies may offer discounts for members you can see more of that with DC fast chargers for example evigo offers a few plan levels where session fees are waived and rates are lower Electrify America offers a pass plus membership for monthly fee that gets you lower rates upgrading your membership is worth it if you charge frequently at DC fast Chargers not just for travel lastly if you are buying a new electric vehicle it may come partnered with the charging company that allows you to get free charging for a certain time frame usually it's free charging for two years but it depends on the agreement terms due to the connected nature of the grid price fluctuations are quicker than things like gas and oil but they don't have large semi-permanent swings this is because the grid is made up of a mix of different fuel types be it natural gas nuclear coal or Renewables so if there is a rising price of one fuel source it doesn't affect the total cost as much plus energy utilization follows very standard patterns so utility companies can purchase fuel in bulk and predict future purchases and costs making things cheaper for the consumer if you have one takeaway from this video it should be that charging at home is the best way to refuel your vehicle if it's possible with your living situation it's cheaper and doesn't require much effort just plug in when you get home and you're ready to go in the morning thank you for spending time with me today have anivia can review email me at info izv.com follow me on social media guys my talk and check out my website for more V resources at kydv.com that's all for now and happy charging
