hmm [Music] good morning hey mommy you've missed a bit you know some of us actually have to do some work for living well uh i'm all caught up you know so i might actually sort of like play my phone for a little bit today or i could even clean the roof of my dirty old van timing chain is broken can you have it done by the end of the day well hello everybody i've got a mark v mondeo surprise surprise we believe the timing chain has snapped he's just been recovered on the back of a trailer apparently the guy was at home he turned the key and he just spun over and wouldn't fire up but uh it's been recovered here so i'm just about to turn the key here and uh just confirm it then we'll look in the oil filler cap just to see how where the chain is i think it's complete no no my luck it's come completely off and bust the load of bloody rockers but we'll see what i was going to do today for this video i'm not going to go through changing it and all that i'm just going to show a few little snippets because i'm what i'll do is i'll link cards here on this video to the other videos we've already done about the changing the timing belt and the chain and all that i've done before because i've done this job so many times i've put it on video as well and at the end of this video i'm hoping that the car still is going to run and it's going to be okay we've had a case before where we've done all the chain everything started it up it didn't sound right drove it up the road and the bloody thing blew up because i think metal bits that got into the sump somehow or whatever or there was more to it i don't know but the crankshaft bearings were knackered so uh i'm hoping it's going to be okay this car's got 270 000 miles on it so it's not it's that's actually quite low like low mileage one of these cars will if it is about 350 000 miles i'll be a bit concerned that it probably needs a new engine but i'm hoping this one's going to live so i'm going to i'm going to rip it all to pieces right in a minute and then we'll see what the damage is put it back together i'll give you a kind of estimated price of what the parts are going to cost for this labour could be anything whatever who whoever's going to charge what for labour i know some garages are over 100 pound an hour so and i can tell you this is a good eight hour job anyway i'm going to crack on and let's see if it is the chain that's going to start with oh dear oh dear mark 5 mondeo 267 000 miles on the clock [Music] it sounds like there's a serious lack of compression in the energy where are we oh my god broken chain it's all flapping around oh dear oh dear another broken bloody timing chain it is a load of work though anyway i'm going to strip all the top off get the cam belt off get it all apart and assess the damage the biggest problem with this job especially with 270 000 miles on that clock is i can do i can put a new chain in it new gaskets and everything else and the engine might be buggered i've had that once before where metal was got into the actual oil pump screwed the big ends and all that so uh this is obviously the cheapest option at the minute is to put a new chain on it and see how it goes it's still a lot of work though but uh let's get it apart and see the damages to start with everything's stripped off injectors are out pipes are off blah blah blah here we go oh my god let me just zoom in there you are there's our chain oh dear oh dear oh dear that is bollocks i'm just going to point something out here because the actual chain has broke the actual the timing belt was okay so what i'm saying is when i timed the cam belt up here the pin went in on the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft lined up as well so there's nothing wrong with the actual camshaft timing so the exhaust camshaft that the belt runs on hasn't really been affected nothing's going to be hit there so if there's any damage at all if anything's broken it's going to be on this inlet camshaft so this is where i'm going to pay my attention to i will check these anyway but if you see what i mean because the belt was all right here and timed up properly there's no way the exhaust camshaft can hit anything so anyway let's get the rest of this cover off and then we'll see how many broken rockers we got two important things to note here because there's like 30 odd bolts holding that top casing down or camshaft cover down i'm going to use an air ratchet to undo them all two because that thing's bloody noisy headphones this is the tricky bit now you've got to break this cover free so hopefully with a few taps of the hammer it's going oh there we go that's broke free we're in business now there we go whoa right i shall just lift this out of the way just remove the three eight mil bolts holding the uh chain tensioner down there so them out the way get them bolts out that tensioner can just come off oh my god that that's completely fallen to pieces and then these cam shafts will just lift out there and now oh dear in there there's part of the tensioner which i have to fish out and there's metal a bit of the metal plate which has broken off the tensioner which is jammed in there so i'm gonna fish all these bits out oh dear well there comes the chain [Laughter] yummy that's uh you know why that's happened didn't you because where this tensioner used to have a nylon piece here that the chain would run on it's gone worn away broke off and the chain's been rubbing across this metal bit and it snagged eventually and just snapped it yeah the plunger and spring which is still in the cylinder head i'll fish that out now i'll fish that plunger out of the cylinder head oh dear yeah that spring so these springs tend to break anyway they fall to pieces and yeah with that that's that piece of metal there's supposed to be a nylon bushing around it for the chain to run on that's completely added that chain's gone flipping neck where's the other where's the other half that one's all right yeah the other thing i noticed on one of the previous ones i've done these camshafts the actual sprockets you need to actually check that all the teeth are on them because i've had one where the actual one of the teeth was was broken off these are looking good and also check especially if you do get broken so you've checked the cam lobes are all in even positions if you know what i mean so like these two are both in the same position because if they were to have hit nothing nothing's been hit on this car though so uh i've been lucky but you can get these lobes they can move around so you just gotta make a note and check everything to make sure everything looks good anyway i have removed all the inlet rockers and tappets and i've inspected them thoroughly and i can honestly say not a single one of them is broken not even a hairline crack in any of them i do have to say though looking at all these rockers flipping neck for like 270 000 miles normally just in here where the rocker sits on top of the valve you get like a little hole where they get worn and hammered in but these are like really good really good condition so uh flippy nick it just goes to show what good oil changes well oil changes at the correct interval can do for an engine because 270 000 miles is a fair old wag yeah i'm going to put all them rockers back in the head now bolt it all back down put it all back together new cam belt new water pump new chain blah blah blah get it all run up and running again the thing is in the past i've had i had one particular car that i've done a chain on and all of that done the whole job drove it up the road and it blew up because it passed bits of metal had got into the oil and oil filter and through the into the crankshaft bearings big ended main bearings destroyed them so i'm hoping that's not going to be the case here so uh fingers crossed well that's the new chain on and there's a little line there on the exhaust sprocket that lines up with a copper link and over here there's another little line which lines up with this copper link so you can't really get it wrong the tension is in the middle and that little bit there that releases the tensioner but i'll release that when everything's back together and the chain's all bolted down properly so i've laid the cam shafts back into place i've rechecked that the actual lines on the sprockets line up with the gold links on both of them the tensioner is bolted down once the cover and everything is all on top and bolted down properly i'll then twist this 90 degrees this little piece and that will release the tensioner and actually tighten it properly and that's it so anyway i'm going to get all this back together and then uh see if it runs do you know what i started this job about three o'clock yesterday afternoon finished at half past five started again this morning at about half past nine it's now five to three in the afternoon holy crap it's all back together i've had minimal breaks i've been sort of like eating sandwiches and drinking water while i've been stopping it's taken me that long to do this i've not been rushing by the way i've been going at like a steady steady pace [Music] everything as far as i'm aware is back together i'm going to wash my flipping hands now and then i'm going to turn the key and see if it works right hands are washed ready to fire it up i've had a look all around it i changed the oil and filter anyway and it's got new anti-freeze new cam belt new water pump the egr valve was leaking as well so i had to change that but anyway i'm going to put the ignition on to start with because uh what i've got to do because there's no fuel in the system in all the pipes i'm going to have to now try and get the fuel through i mean it's got a pump in the tank so it's going to push it round hopefully it will uh not take too long to start so that's the third prime it's got oh here we go then [Music] holy crap it's actually started up i'm just i'm just gonna let it tick over for a little while and see how it goes it's looking i'm good that went so fast look no float puddle was on the floor yet the amount of times i've done this job it should be okay so we give it a little red see if it revs up [Music] [Music] but it certainly sounds okay oh flipping tire light on again it's nothing new she lives to pick up customers another day anyway i suppose i better get to the uh the end of this how long how long will your mark 5 2 litre diesel timing chain last by my count the earliest one i've ever done was 220 000 miles take into consideration all these taxis here they all have their oil and filter changes done around about 15 000 miles the reason being there's a hundred cars oil is bloody expensive ford do recommend that these cars are done around about 15 000 miles although if you've got your own car you might be better like doing it around about ten thousand but yeah on average these timing chains they tend to fail i would say anything from 240 000 miles upwards they get rattly as i've i've said so many times before now the tensioner the little nylon bushings on the tensioners that the chain runs on they wear out they then break up disintegrate the chain is then running over metal and obviously if it's run too long it snags and obviously breaks the chain i have seen i have found though on that we've had about three or four chains break now and each time i've got away lucky with like this car zero rockers were broken not one and then rockers are not cheap to buy by the way if the cam belt had gone which i've had before it done all 16 rockers snapped them all in the middle so anyway as it stands here with like 100 taxes it's a lot of expense i can tell you for now the chain the tensioner and all the gaskets needed to do this job from ford com including v80 is 274 pound that does not include your water pump which is the best part of 200 pound the cam belt kit which you're going to have to replace as well that's another 100 pound your auxiliary belt whatever that comes to i do not know so when you add it up at the end to do to actually do this job properly plus the oil and filter change flipping oh my god the bill's getting higher and higher every minute bloody hell but honestly is this like let me figure this out 300 456. you know you're talking about the best part of 700 pound in parts alone flipping neck and then and if you had to pay somebody to do the job and when you're talking like flipping eight hour job really bloody hell it's expensive so uh i don't know what to say to you but there again on the other hand most people who own one of these cars privately you probably won't be doing that much mileage anyway you'll probably never even get anywhere near 200 000 miles so i wouldn't worry too much i will point out though all our 14 plate mark 4 mondeos with the they're not the same engine they're very similar they've got a similar setup i've never ever had attention to go in one of them 14 plates or a chain we service them regularly and a lot of them cars are like 350 000 miles or more perfect no chain issues whatsoever these ones are it's the same type of tensioner but it's a little bit different i reckon they're just using cheaper materials but anyway that's it i've done yet another timing chain now i've got a service to god damn carl right i guess i will say see you in next one thanks for watching adios
