hi Kito fam welcome back to my channel I'm Christina and as of last week I have lost 102 pounds on a ketogenic diet and I'm here to help you do the same so today's video is going to be about how long it's gonna take you to get into ketosis and this is something that I get asked off a lot I mean every single day I get asked how long is it gonna take me to get into ketosis and I tell everybody the exact same thing it depends and I know that's not the answer that you want to hear I know you want me to say it's going to be three days before you're in ketosis but honestly like everything else to do a keto is completely different for everybody so the average is two to seven days if you ask any doctor though well not any doctor a doctor that knows about keto they will tell you that it takes between two and seven days get into ketosis the body stores glycogen which is the glucose fuel in the liver and the liver is capable of storing about two days worth of glycogen and what happens is on that second day as the glycogen stores start to deplete so your body is using its fuel it's it's glucose fuel for energy as that starts to deplete your body starts to get bit I don't see and it's thinking well I haven't had my glycogen stores replenished and it's getting close to empty I mean imagine you're driving along and your petrol tank is getting lower and lower and lower and lower what are you gonna do you're gonna stop the car and you're gonna refill and the body is the same so on the second day and sometimes for people it's different it could be the third day depending on what you have as your last last carb meal it's on day two that the carb cravings tend to be the worst and this is because the body is seeing the stipulation and fuel and it's not getting refilled and it it's panicking a bit and saying come on you gotta fill me up if you want me to keep moving you have to you have to fill me up so day two the cravings tend to be quite strong because you have that biochemical urge to go and refuel your liver and I've talked about this biochemical urge before and this is why on that if you try and do keto 99% you are going to suffer so much you need to do it 100% so that that biochemical urge is completely suppressed because your body knows that it's not getting carbs at all ever ever ever well it's not getting refined carbs at all ever so crazy things are at their worst around day two but what when when you start to produce ketones it doesn't necessarily mean your keto adapted because again the body has to realize that this is a good fuel source it's abundant and it's going to be the primary source of you for the rest of your life usually the rest of your life so just because you have your own ketones in your urine or you might be shown ketones in your breath doesn't necessarily mean that you are keto adapted you're still in that middle ground between silver and your glycogen stores are still burning the glucose that's gone around your body and your body starting to produce the ketones that it needs for fuel because it realizes that the glycogen is not going to get restored and as quickly as it used to note don't worry about running out of glucose because your body is magic I've said this I don't know how many times that the body's search however clever machine and the more I learn about it the more amazed I am of the things we can do and we don't even know about it but your body can make glucose from fat if anybody wants to know how that works you just you can search for it on Google so the length of time that it takes you to get into ketosis is obviously going to be hugely dependent on how metabolically ill you were before you started keto so take me for example obviously I was morbidly obese I was 261 pounds I was pretty morbidly obese and I had hyperinsulinemia which is chronic high levels of insulin I had hyper hypoglycemia which is dips really bad dips and blood sugar and I would get the shakes and the sweats and just feel nauseous I'm fainting although the horrible stuff and so other types of metabolic disease are type 2 diabetes PCOS heart attacks stroke high blood pressure high triglycerides and hyperinsulinemia there just a few metabolic diseases and cancer as well is another metabolic disease so if you've had any of those things or you have any of those things it's going to impair your ability your body's ability to understand that fat is fuel because the mechanisms that are supposed to if you imagine it like gears turning you know gear interlocking gears it's like they're rusty and they're stuck because they've not been used probably your entire life so your body is literally trying to crank that wheel to get the gear turning and eventually it does and you will be in proper ketosis and it might take might take between two days and seven days and even at seven days you can still feel a little bit the terror Jake you can still have cramps and leg cramps and and sometimes nausea digestive issues and that all of course is detoxification from sugar and carbs and when you see I know it was so funny because I only read an article today about the dangers of ketosis and the side effects were nausea leg cramps muscle cramps it like Rob's a muscle cramp but the digestive issues headaches and it was like no they are not the symptoms of ketosis they are the symptoms of carb withdrawal and I hate that people are being misled if I looked at that before I started keto obviously I did a lot of research into it before I started but I would hate anybody who is thinking about Peter who who needs keto to help fix their metabolic issues I would hate anybody to read an article like that and say well you know what I don't want all those side effects for the rest of my life I don't want to have to take medication to control the sweats or the cram so the nausea or the headaches because that's what the the article insinuated that this was the cause of it so one stuff initial period is gone where you are having those withdrawals on you may not have them not everybody gets them it sometimes it's not that bad and but once once you get to two wards the seven-day market is a fairly good chance that you are starting to burn those main ketones that you need for fuel and like I said if you've had issues with PCOS and type-2 diabetes obesity non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is actually another metabolic disease and it's caused by sugar and carbs much the same way fatty liver from alcohol it's exactly the same metabolic mechanism that makes those thing that can speak that makes those things happen so depending on how sick you are have metabolically deranged you are it can take anywhere up to two weeks I would say before you're properly keto adapted which is a little bit different and I'd say at least six weeks six to eight weeks before you're properly keto adapted means that your body has started to produce the enzymes necessary for digesting high amounts of fats so you'll start to see the digestive issues go away and really your body's ability to switch between carb burning and fat burning gets better if you're not metabolically deranged to begin with so those gym bunnies you see where they're jumping around and they're like 50 kilograms and they have ripped muscles and I'm talking about women obviously because you're not gonna get a 50 50 kilogram male bodybuilder but those women that you see can have car bob days can have carb cycling within their within their schedule because they can easily flip back and forward between keto and glycogen burning burning ketones burning glycogen simply because they were always tend to begin with they were never metabolically deranged and they never had any of the issues from from carb toxicity really is the only word I can use for so the answer to the question is it depends so hopefully using the information that I've given you here now you'll be able to have a better understanding of why it might take you a little bit longer and just be patient you know we say keep calm and keto on for a very good reason because things may be changing and you can't see them and you can't be but I promise you every day that you're burning ketones as your primary source of fuel is a day that you're getting healthier and healthier and healthier so thank you very much for stopping by I really hope this was
