well hello viewers and welcome back to the channel in today's video i'm going to show you how i clean my bicycle chain and show you two different methods i use the most common and quickest and easiest involves cleaning the chain on a bicycle as it is now and you ever require taking a chain off the bicycle for really deep and thorough clean the reason for doing this today is because i have a big event at a weekend a big sportive so make sure the bike is all prepped all right nicely and particularly the chain is gonna be nice and quiet during that long event so a really good time to do that but something you should do on a regular basis anyway it's a good routine to get into now for clean your bike chain you don't need many special tools but i have a selection of tools i use here on a regular basis i'll put links away down below and there's currently a discount code with mock-off as well so definitely worth checking out their website for more details now the easiest method for cleaning the chain is on the bike and using a chain bath like this one here from mukov loads of brands make these these are really simple and almost mess-free because all you do is put this degreaser into the top chamber put that on the chain spin the chain backwards press a button to release the degreaser into the bath where we have special kind of teeth and rotating wheels to clean that chain really thoroughly so i use this on a regular basis takes five minutes and gets the chain to a really good state so i'm really happy with that the chain is much cleaner than it was five minutes ago and after you've done that you can still use your sponge and brushes to just get into places where that device can't especially around the jockey wheels and in the sprockets of the cassette there well and that's really as simple as it gets so those two methods either a chain bath or some brushes and sponges and a good quality degreaser it's the easiest way to get the chain nice and clean and something i do on a regular basis because i ride bikes every day through all conditions and it doesn't take long for that road grime and dirt and mud and avo crap to find a way onto the chain and that accelerates aware of the chain so get into a routine make it as easy to do after a bike ride as you can and you're more likely to do it on a regular basis so that is the easiest and most straightforward method for cleaning a bike chain on a regular basis the second process is a bit more complex and involves taking a chain off the bicycle not something i do on a regular basis but if you have neglected to clean your chain on a regular weekly basis and you've let grime build onto a chain in a really bad way then taking it off the bike and clean it in a jar like this with some degreaser shaking it around is a really good way to get a nice deep thorough clean on the chain now taking a chain off a bike involves breaking a chain which is not something you want to do too often but most modern chains come with these removal quick links some are recommended to be a one-time use only but some you can reuse but i know people who do use them two or three times before it's probably best not to keep breaking them so i've got a few spare here and to remove a power lock or a quick link it's fairly simple but you can get a tool like this which makes the job much easier so i've successfully managed to remove or disengage the power lock put it to one side to reuse or replace a new one afterwards and now just take the chain off [Music] just carefully remove it like so and there we have a chain ready for a deep clean so there are loads of different methods here to how you do a deep clean i'm sure you let me know down in the comment section below there's no right or wrong really all you are trying to achieve is a false immersion of the chain in a degreaser or whatever you might want to use to allow it to soak into all the nooks and crannies in the chain do that a few times get rid of all the dirt that's really ingrained in the chain and then dry it off and you have a pristine chain ready for your lube so dump that in the jar make sure it lids properly on [Music] you can probably see how dirty that degreaser is because it was that color just now and it's now of that color so even that chain being fairly clean before it went in the jar it's showing a lot of dirt so i'll do it a few times pour out that degreaser safely put some more in there until it's almost the same color as it was in a jar here so that chain now looks brand spanky near really shiny i can't see any dirt or grime in there so i've rinsed it off the hose pipe i'll dry it with a rag now and then because nice and sunny i live to dry for a little while and make sure it's really dry before i put it back on the bike did a reverse of the power lock to reconnect the chain and then apply my lube of choice and that is how you do a really deep clean on a bicycle chain not as labor intensive as it looks not something i do on a regular basis but if you are really ocd about clean chains then you might do it on a weekly or monthly basis but let me know down below and while the chain is drying in the sunshine i'll go through the cassette and jockey wheels and the chainrings make sure there's no grime on there that can then get back onto the chain which i spent ages cleaning as well so the whole drive train will be super clean ready for the event at a weekend and that is job done chain back on and it looks as good new basically like it comes straight out of a box so all shiny clean all i have to do now is apply my new lube or your loo of choice and i'm good to go and the bike and the chain should be nice and quiet shouldn't give me any drama this weekend for the event i'm doing anyway that's been my guide to how i personally clean a chain the quick method and a not so quick method and as with most things in life there's more than one or two ways to do this sort of job so let me know your preferred method but leave a comment down below and don't forget their mock-off discount code at their website linked down below as well and if you enjoyed that and you'll see some more how-to videos then do check the playlist from jim up here loads of good content in there for how to sort your bike out in different aspects so make sure you give it a watch anyway i'll see you again very soon thank you so much for watching
