How I built a guard rail around my attic entrance.

are you great it's richie and uh today i want to show you how i built this guardrail around my attic entrance now if you've ever had a home inspection on a place you'll know that no guard rail around your attic entrance is a serious safety hazard i went to home depot and i bought four deck posts and three pre-fabricated decking guard rails i also picked up a selection of brackets to attach the posts to the floor brackets to attach the rails to the posts and a selection of wood screws lag bolts and some caps for the posts now if you're following decking code the height of the guardrail should be no less than 3 feet or 36 inches so i'm making my posts 3 foot 6 inches all right now i've just cut this uh edge piece to left just uh make sure it's gonna fit before i secure the bloody camera try again oh you're kidding me so i just cut this edge piece to and i'm going to make sure it's the right size before i go ahead and secure the corner posts so yeah it looks like it's going to fit nicely and uh next thing i'm going to secure these corner posts on two brackets on each side of the rail just so i have perfect uh measurement decided to pre-build my back rail before installing it and you want to see here i'm using deck code you want to have four inches at the bottom and the railing should be at least 36 inches high so here's the constructed back guard braille piece going to now connect it to the floor with the lag bolts you must use leg bolts they are the strongest now you must drill pilot holes right so we just finished the back section of the rail okay fixed it with the leg bolts as you can see there pre-drilled you pre-drill a pilot hole and now it's time to uh do the sides so we just put the uh brackets on the uh guard rail the two main ones we're gonna now we're gonna install a post here now for these middle posts i had to go to the store and get a different type of type of bracket these ones the original ones your rail is going to be mounted here and uh you need to clean on both sides so to get this bracket from home depot as you can see i pre-drilled the post onto the guard rail and i'm gonna install it i'm gonna use a bit of wood to prop it up here it's gonna be four inches remember this this person wants about three three six so i have to get a bit of a spacer in there to make it exactly it's good enough for now okay so i've just measured uh four inches off the ground there and now i'm gonna put a temporary screw in there just to hold it in place where i'll fix the other ones so just put a uh one screw in the top here just to hold it in place i've got a middle it's quite hard doing on my own um i'm no builder i use a bit of cardboard to jack it up to the right height and i'm going to probably put the top screen over there and then finish it off so yeah she's looking not bad yeah i just got to do the other side so just repeat the exact same thing on this side looking pretty good and uh the only thing i got left to do is i'm going to put a couple of extensions here just uh just to complete the job because as you see someone could be walking here and they could they could fall down here so you've got to make sure it goes the whole way so let's uh get to it eh as you can see i've cut these uh two guard rails to length one over there now i'm just going to put the last two posts in and we should be done all right everybody so we just got the last uh post in the last screwing and see looks good let's take a look oh yeah look at that she's a beauty isn't she one more thing to do is just top off post with these black caps just to finish it off it's been a little bit since my last video but i just want to show you the finished product i added the last two extensions and i added some brackets down here that you can find at lowe's or home depot whatever you choose to use i prefer lowe's i actually also installed a um handrail here because that's also something that a home inspection will will call you out on so anyway pretty happy with the finished result [Music] well i hope you got something out of today's video folks my name is rich and thank you for [Music] watching
