[Music] clip i'm back here at gamson and today i'm going to be flying in a pa 28. but not lima bravo i am cheating on lima bravo because today we're going to be flying on something even cooler [Music] and it's got one of these wobbly things and um strangely an extra lever on here look what is this magic this is a 1968 piper arrow and it's the other pa-28 that gamston flying school have in their fleet today i'm going to be learning how to fly it the piper arrow is the complex version of the p828 it comes with retractable landing gear and a variable pitch propeller which is the extra blue lever as opposed to the fixed one in the warrior games arrows the original 180 model and is 180 horsepower lycoming engine with three bladed hot cell propeller delivers a crude speed of 150 miles per hour with a maximum speed of over 200 miles per hour after watching the royal helicopter pop in for fuel with william and kate on board we jumped into the arrow so it'd be a warm start now yeah okay the carriage is down emergency selector is master switch on the collision light is your contents sufficient carriage lines three greens transit lights are off fuel pump on this rising off enough lights not needed [Music] starting the engines a little bit different too you have to start with the mixture on lean and then feed in the fuel as the engine starts okay [Music] there [Music] oil pressure is rising bottle set to 12 breaks are holding ammeters charging banks are good thank you my instruments will just check them one two one [Applause] get lost hopefully now that's on 701k now that's it seven zero one zero that's our circuit frequency oh okay uh okay just so is that new i don't know okay um just so doncaster know where in the circuit oh i see right for doncaster rather than okay i didn't realize that captain radio good afternoon and golf alpha victor yankee tampa request radio check airfield information to pob to do circuits radio good afternoon uh 335 front menus g1 right hand circuit qfe one zero zero seven two one right hand circuit qfp one zero zero seven gold yankee taco there you want to blow seven and that's set there yep right so we're already there let's get rolling my parking brakes off okay stopping about [Music] [Music] so then we do fuel selected to fullest tank which is i still there left actually so that's good mixtures rich props forward throttle set too okay just once for the prop yep yeah that's perfect we're doing max check left right good [Music] is charging action is good yeah an idling back idling at seven reset twelve okay fuel selector is on the forest attack autopilot is off max on both master switches on mixtures forward pellets full forward prediction is set alternate air is off trim set bake off yeah that's not needed he's in the green flight instruments we will sit with everything with me ufe and everything and the doors closed unlocked isn't that paper and we're all fastened in just check the controls yucky tacker holding shorter bravo ready for departure rainbow two romeo is the call sign for the royal helicopter [Music] is increasing 60 70 and there's 80. perfect [Music] [Applause] good evening one of the biggest differences with a variable prop is that the throttle controls the manifold pressure and the rpm is done with the prop pitch lever this takes quite a lot of getting used to okay 20 inches but 20 inches manifold pressure [Music] the faster speed also means that things happen a lot quicker watch yeah yeah that's just quiet i've got 18 inches uh radio river 2 romeo come down go juggling the numbers between the manifold pressure and the prop can get quite confusing at first and i kept finding myself going to adjust the wrong lever rainbow surface between 100 degrees less than five 15 inches upset two stages of flaps [Music] 100 miles an hour yeah pretty much run about 15 inches that's it yeah it was rubble in a bit wasn't it not just that you should be turning finally around six five to six hundred feet yeah you're a little bit low at this point okay i'll just um beverage is clear he's gone out i can see official down there the style run turned a bit more yeah about the speedometer in the arrow is in miles per hour instead of knots which again takes some getting used to hopefully yeah [Music] and have a good flight red blue yeah i'm sorry red blue screens yeah three greens for landing red blues greens refers to the final approach checks i have to do mixture forward prop forward and green lights for the landing gear that's it more imbalanced now a little on the firm side but not too bad for my first landing 18 knots and yes i said knots instead of mph just need a little bit of light with that yeah yeah okay remember runway let's gear up make sure you get 100 yeah because that's the difference between leveling off crosswind yeah to uh turn down when this makes it last so much easier [Music] now plenty [Music] that's 20 manifold pressure 2400 rpm and 10 gallons per hour fuel flow okay so brakes are off it breaks onto come down at that mixture is rich props coming forward from some and what's going to go around isn't that happy we don't know i just know this is secure drifting in a little bit so yeah probably want to go on about a one two zero two zero zero two five now i tend to get him for zero three like the remember it's not quite zero three don't forget the win yeah it's true okay 105. that's better six knots a bit of right rudder in there trying to hold that player a little bit longer instead of just letting it go yep here up when the gear goes down yeah manifold pressure goes down here and then you're just sinking you've not got enough power on here to withstand the extra drag because i said thanks for the extra stage of flap yes when it is zero degrees six knots [Music] is yeah i really wasn't proud of that one a little earlier [Music] there we go it'll sit quite nicely there it's 100 could be about 110 yeah now you can reduce it's 15 inches two stages of flats i think that last we were a little bit high on approach yeah all the way down and then it started to flow into early forgot about that [Music] right rod up [Music] i'm a lot better get a bit further out last time i'd like to say it was deliberate because he's backtracking but i think you know me better than that i know what you were doing [Music] blue [Music] okay have a nice [Music] is [Music] hey especially in these speeds yeah blues i heard you that time that's why i waited till after responded [Music] [Music] upset forward will secure oh this is perfect this is but this is instrument playing it's replaced bfr let's say that with this weather it might very well be is okay i think those numbers to work to when you actually pay attention to them it's pretty useful last night yeah that's what i have written lima forward if but if you think about it when you're drifting yeah and you've got uh crosswinds and like a strong crosswind and you're traveling fast yeah you'll drift less yes if you're gone if you're traveling slower yeah so much yeah that's exactly what's happening there yeah [Music] and decreasing so much yeah it tends to drift so you've got to put more effort in yeah okay go ahead oh yes you can go what the wind is favoring uh zero three uh i believe i'll have to change the runway to zero three left-hand circuit uh what is the wind uh currently between zero six zero degrees and zero nine zero degrees between five and nine knots uh no worries uh so what we're intend to do is fly down to the end of the downwind leg orbit and then pick up zero to three so what we're gonna do is go straight out down to the bottom of the uh downwind leg okay we'll do a left hand a bit downwind there's all right turkey trafficking so you just keep it coming in at 20 24 10. even a thousand feet oh not many i think 106 or something nice not much i've been like 40 in the last sort of 12 months so yeah flying has definitely improved since last time with you i think all that flying with mix sort of um helped me a little bit yeah that's why i'm trying to be on you a little bit with these headings and uh yes i need it yeah [Applause] oh is what did you think to that yeah that was all right you know just my instinct is to go on the radio straight away that's one of the things john told me about like that's the last thing any worries is to talk to them just get yourself flying it that's one of my pets get off that radio aviate navigate communicating on me test we did the ils up at doncaster and um they were like i was i was talking to them as i was trying to do all my checks and stuff and yeah and then you go yeah i know and i'm like it just doesn't sound healthy for it [Laughter] i'm just worried about damaging it but one on the runway we've got blues pickled greens he's just declared come out for india runway they catered that same lobby that keeps going across the end of the runway every bloody time it's like ai trafficking flights him isn't it [Applause] please [Music] [Applause] so there we go my first flight in the piper arrow complete next time i'll be learning stalls and steep turns and hopefully we'll have a little nicer weather for it make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don't miss it in the meantime thanks for watching take care and i'll see you on the next one
