How Dwarf Fortress Mastered Difficulty

Dwarf Fortress is a colony Sim that can back up its reputation it's a hidden Juggernaut in the gaming scene Paving the way for games all the way from Rim world to Minecraft and I personally can't think of a game that can match its depth and complexity from a mechanical standpoint it's tagline losing is fun Mak sure you understand exactly what you're getting into from the very first time you launch the game I'm about 50 hours in and I can comfortably say I haven't even scratched the surface the one aspect of the game's reputation that isn't accurate however is that Dwarf Fortress is a tremendously difficult game to get into while this was the case at one time gone or the days of memorizing lists of keybinds to perform even the most simple of actions and asy Graphics are now a nostalgic option for the players that are used to them and not a requirement for players that are just starting out a short series of tutorials even ensures new players are provided with a basic understanding of how to keep their first Fortress running but only once the asky Shroud lifts and your mouse becomes functional does Dwarf Fortress reveal the hidden truth and perhaps its best quality I fear that non- Dwarf Fortress players hear the phrase losing is fun and focus on the word losing but the more I play the game the more I realize the emphasis in that phrase truly is on the word fun Dwarf Fortress allows the player to play at their own pace but encourages the player to take risks and seek out difficulty a new or especially cautious player could without doubt dig a fortress at just a few levels from the surface and provide the inhabitant with a quiet life devoid of Adventure or OSHA violations but can you think of a quality less Dwarven than caution I certainly can't and so it is that most fortresses die not because the game is unavoidably difficult but because even the newest of players are inspired to utter time honored Dwarven phrases such as no way this works but let's try it or it'll be fine lava really isn't that dangerous or let's fight that thing in the cavern and perhaps the most sacred of all let's dig just a little deeper because Dwarf Fortress really isn't hard losing is just very fun [Music]
