we're better these are the jokes people you ever been in a Turkish prison wouldn't you like to know wouldn't you like to know you like movies about gladiators what's up guys this is ice and yes we're back three quarters of an idiot live coming at you from The Roundhouse although wait we're alive uh yes we're not dead yes oh yes check check the pulse yes still still breathing your neck is very soft [Laughter] so well last time we filmed over by the Welding Table uh and it's been shopped like seriously this time so this time we stole the brake table and brought it over between the engines and everything and uh it's very fun today we're playing citation needed which is going to be a game where we talk through a railroad story from railroad history and I asked these idiots to try and guess the facts about the story and if they get anything correct they get a point and this time we have it on a piece of paper and Pen because we're slightly higher budget this time slightly higher budget higher budget thing marginally solvent yes thank you to all of the ESD train crew and all of our supporters on the channel hopefully the audio doesn't suck we'll find out uh anyway that's the thing that is that is pain but joining me today you know he's Dr Jones Bradley mold and you know he's actually Marcus Brody it's late in Moreland does anybody here speak ancient Greek and he's actually just the guy with the camels so I mean it's Dusty's friend Jimmy from the car [Applause] Jimmy from the car I got Jimmy from the Cog and uh the special price or prize for especially Jimmy is the mystery Citrus an abundance brought to you by Cool Whip today brought to you by Cool Whip not actually sponsored but yes if there's any dumb puns or dumb statements or things the Citrus comes out and uh we know that everybody loved Eric and we loved having Eric on and perhaps we shall have Eric on again we will have Eric someday again we just knew that there would be lots of limes if we had Jimmy on I'd like to point out he is not here against his will he came here voluntarily did and he knows that he's going to be lined I'm just here to grind everyone's gears that's a good one almost got that done your shirt and so the disgusting Citrus begins And So It Begins all right let's start with that joke it's got some tooth and people don't have to Rack their brains around it says start 10 minutes in can we start the story gents today's first game of citation needed is going to be about the Collision of two CSX Transportation freight trains in 2019. there was only one there were two well there's only one Collision in 2019 oh well this is specifically I'm going to be reading through the details of an NTSB article about this Collision because it has many notable things and many silly things that'll be fun to get you guys to guess through is it truly a case of Crash bang explode no it is not in fact a case of Crash bang explode crash smash explodes that's what CSX stands for sorry sorry forgive me there's no explosion but crash and smash yes yes so it's CSX what part of the country are we in do we think the bad part of the country are you going to give the point if you had to guess one state to be the bad part of the country New Jersey Jimmy would you like to in New Jersey doesn't count as a state come on oh okay it's not bad no Ohio um not necessarily the bad part of the country but the boring part just the part of the country that can be described by the sound yes that works it is a state that is best described by its first syllable oh yeah home to the Buckeye a useless nut yes sure yes I don't know anything about why do you know things about Ohio I lived there for a year why yeah why I asked myself the same question all the time and you keep going back for a train show so yes I do anyways so we have the Collision of two trains someone paint me a picture of what the Collision looks like yeah no that was very good that's pretty good it sounds like but uh this was a a particularly interesting one what do you think happened what kind of collision head-on side swipe blah blah anything with her sheep involved no is there a crossover involved yes really crossover well a diamond cross not a diamond crossover oh was it like a switch it crossover switch it crossover switched crossover of a particular variety points if you can get what is it a double slip no it's no it no it's Ohio why would they need a double slip I don't get out of Ohio more ways out your exits are located all around you please run well I guess you could swim out of Ohio but not the train oh so it's not a diamond Crossing it's not a double slip switch is it a railroad like ding ding ding ding ding Crossing no no what does that leave a crossover a set of points yeah so it's actually well actually is that not just a double okay no it's not a double slip but there's no diamond it was a single crossover between split from a single track to a dual track so it technically wasn't a crossover anyways what what are you doing my guess was going to be a fan fiction crossover but steamy eat and die action um yes Leighton came into the roundhouse with a bag full of limes anyway so we have a train going east we have a train going west that's bad yes and we are merging at a uh or we're coming up to a single track dual track split off okay so what happens why why would there be a collision at such Point Precision scheduled railroading 2019 computer glitch I'll give you partial points for this so the eastbound train had had a PTC failure the previous day so it had no PTC while it was running and it was the one that was coming from the single track and diverging into the the second track but it was not because of Eastbound Train's PTC failure that the Collision occurred so the westbound Train's failure to see the eastbound train because its PTC was broken no but you're on the right track uh [Applause] I wasn't no that though no if it was not planned I will take the lime and be murdered with it Laden throws viciously it does and he Dodges very well too got vicious teeth oh careful of jiggling the table oh yes because we're gonna Star Trek yeah do the lean so eastbound train two locomotives 110 cars loads of Frack sand going into the hole ah no frack no it's almost a mile long it had the PTC failure westbound train two locomotives again except one's a dpu 94 cars back did the dpu keep shoving and shove the train through the switch no good good check they had 109 loads of trash of refuse garbage trains literal garbage train 67 empties behind it 16 816 tons and 11 000 feet long so I'm gonna give you a retract point for precision scheduled railroading because two locomotives for that pile what the hell is this what the hell is that quite literal pile yes yes sorry okay so part of the issue that causes the crash is because the westbound train was doing some switching to so what does that have to do with PTC or what might you think that has to do with PTC do you lock it out or something Point yes so PTC is all about trying to protect and enforce stop targets and when you're switching and you're no longer just continuously going down and getting signals and everything sometimes you have to put it in restricted mode so that you can back up and violate signals and blocks and things and put the cars where they need to go because sometimes you're putting cars into an already occupied block right so you turn PTC into restricted mode you do your switching you flip it back over and then you're all hunky-dory did they not turn it back over they did not turn it back over no no they did not so did they put the shove in and it thought PTC thought that the block was now clear and gave the other choo choo clearance to go no so they put they dropped off 30 cars and the conductor was riding the shove back into the industry to dump the 30 cars off you know two miles back at this point right right and there was some other train that was doing some switching in the in that facility and so the conductor remained with the other train to help them do their switching and was going to get a van to the next grade crossing to meet up with his engineer before they kept on their poll so the engineers alone in the cab up front and is starting to make the poll out of the industry and it's safe he can cover his own move right but disaster happens from there why they backed out of the detection block and then went back into it you're thinking very technical the problem is very human in nature did somebody turn it back turn the PTC back on at the exact wrong time now he never changed it out of restricted mode he left it set as restricted is restricted mode kind of a misnomer and it's actually very unrestrictive when it's in restricted mode in a certain way yeah it's not good so restrictive mode holds the train to below restricted speed so as long as you don't go above restricted speed it will hold in restricted mode you can do whatever you want you can run through signals or at least in this era you could this side incident actually changed the ruling of how this works I see so I'm going to try and give you a little hint about what may have been causing this so at 4 45 a.m on the date of the crash the PTC system was remaining in restricted mode the westbound train departed Cary Ohio to picked up the conductor with the engineer in the locomotive just by himself in the control roll compartment the PTC system should have been reconfigured by the westbound train engineer but the onboard locomotive vent recorder showed that it stayed in restricted mode and it showed that the train speed fluctuated significantly between 0 and 10 miles an hour quite frequently it's 4 40 am yes is this man exhausted no so he is awake he is awake he may not be uh terribly good because it also notes that he operated the locomotive headlight selector switch in a confusing manner while on the approach to the converging Point what constitutes a confusing is he's turning the headlight off a little bit of that yeah okay why might that be is he a noob no is he inebriated yes dude is hammered great yeah yeah oh God so he's hammered he's got PTC off he's going below the speed the max speed don't forget his conductor's not with him and his conductor is not with him so he just sends it he's just he he can't send it because he's only got two locomotives and he's got 10 000 feet of train still yeah almost so he's just kind of he's going back and forth between like Idol and eight and Dynamics and full like he cannot regulate speed and so they basically show the image data showed at 503 am that the westbound train engineer turned off the locomotive headlight while still moving at 506 a.m the westbound train engineer turned on the locomotive headlight and can you continued increasing speed while approaching approaching the Wayside signal at control Point Springs at 507 am the westbound trying to continued in increasing speed and moving towards the Wayside signal the forward-facing image recorder data indicates that at the same time the headlight of the eastbound train became visibly brighter eastbound engineer knows what's going on the westbound train continued past the red signal at CP Springs at a speed of about nine mile an hour and collided with the sixth rail car of the eastbound train at 509 a.m so at least this was a slow crash slow crash hence why your crash was not accurate okay oh yes yeah pretty much that so and oh no you spilled garbage all over Ohio oh I want to do the environmental remediation tragic yeah so Price is Right rules how many cars go on the ground zero 150. seven seven uh Jimmy wins seven without going over yeah on the westbound train four cars and the engine go on the ground and actually roll over and on the other car 21 of the loaded cars of frax sand just accordion and on themselves because they're super heavy Right Price is Right rules how much do you think the damage was dollars doll hairs was the locomotive are we allowed to clarify if the locomotive was totaled I wasn't totaled but it did roll on its side okay was it it in an environmentally sensitive area it's Ohio I don't know there might be a wetland with a mouse it's not that they say in the report okay it's not very nice to call we call them suburbs Leighton okay Price is Right rules we're going this way this time this way quarter Mill 10 million 2 million Brett's closest without going over 4.9 million oh so the NTSB performs the review of the incident trying to figure out at the end of the day what were the issues that caused this I'm just picturing them walking down the track side with a big magnifying glass following a trail of beer cans left along the right yeah so the funny thing is the conductor never saw the engineer drink he never saw it happen so presumably either conductors covering for the engineer or when he was riding the shove engineer was just he must have had it's okay yeah I know it's okay it's okay we know it's fine we won't tell him so uh what do you think the NTSB ruled as the uh the ultimate safety issues that led up to this will G no actually PTC could have prevented this yes that's part of it PTC they also identified that train handling and performance was an issue the csx's random drug and alcohol testing program because they had found that the engineer had missed several of the previously scheduled and required tests by the FR so this is a habitual Drinker on the channel apparently and also Inward and outward facing image recorders because there was no internal camera so they couldn't see that the engineer was getting hammered they did end up saying that the probable cause of the train Collision not the safety issue that led up to it the probable cause was that let me use the exact verbiage here the westbound train engineer failed to respond to the signal indications requiring him to slow and stop the train prior to control Point Springs because of his impairment due to the effects of alcohol the light is blinking at me I can blink back you son of a precisely contributing to the Collision was the design of the positive train control system PTC could have prevented this which allowed continued operation in restricted mode on the main track PTC could have prevented it BTC could have prevented they took a blood alcohol content reading six hours after the incident prices no what do we think it was six hours later okay question at what point do you is alcohol poisoning is it fatal point s about death people that are not alcoholics is like 0.25 or something like that but we're gonna assume this guys it's six hours so he's gonna have baked some of it off because presumably he's been in custody and or medical care the cops are lending truth that's cruel I know so six hours afterwards we're gonna start it late and go this way this time what do you think 0.21 0.21 okay really hot really hot well all right we're gonna throw out a number here 0.27 why why not point one Brett wins because it was 0.115 so that's six hours later 10 alcohol well point point one percent of that still very drunk like yes it's definitely texture X territory so six hours before he would have been around point two which is most people are vomiting and or blacked out and he's driving a train and he's running a 16 000 foot long pile of CSX so yeah there you go at the the end of the uh this quick one here Brett wins with six points and I still didn't think of anything witty for you to win and that's the end of the episode it's the end of the episode it's the end of the episode [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music]
