How do you know your chisel is sharp enough

so how exactly do you know when your chisel is sharp enough for a lot of woodworking for chopping for General stock removal it doesn't have to be crazy sharp but every now and then you want to do some fine Woodworking and for smoothing planes or fine pairing it needs to be really sharp that's something that's really hard to describe over camera some people love the fingernail test but I found that even a rather dull chisel will still be able to do that some people like the paper test I found it somewhat hard to do consistently one that I found to really beat the best at representation is arm shaving a dull chisel won't get any hairs it just runs right over them a moderately sharp chisel will start to cut the hairs but it will be missing quite a few and it'll take several Strokes to get it nice and clean a really good clean chisel will hit every single hair with very little pressure and give you a nice smooth surface the downside is you have to be careful but it will tell you very clearly between dull moderately sharp and really sharp and that's exactly how you can identify someone who works with hand tools due to hand tool pattern baldness
