But how do they keep warm in -40f ?!?!?!?!
To all the people saying it’s not Russian: you may be right as far is the history goes, but I’ve slept in winter “houses” in rural Russia that have been heated in this fashion as well as had food cooked in them when I was a child. Not sure if I slept on the actual stove structure, but I’m sure I’ve been told that it’s done. So even if this has origins is other countries, it was sure common in rural Russia.
I have “house” in quotes because unlike large houses that are used during summer, a small winter shack (one room + kitchen), insulated as heck is built on property to be used when heating large houses becomes impractical.
I love that his commentary could be done equally well by someone completely unfamiliar with the area. “Books...a window ...some Russian stuff”.
Not even joking, it’s so endearing and funky.
Fascinating stuff... I love all the old things he’s showing.. the dolls upstairs. I’m envious of a simpler life :). Then again I’m lazy and don’t want to do all that work to get the house heated.. if I’m cold I can open an app on my phone and tell my house to put the heat on.. or off.. or turn on lights.. goddamned it we’re all going to look like the people in Wall-E..
