How Disney Characters blink and talk

[Music] hi at Disney parks characters are always present whether you're a tadpole or a grown up frog meeting and seeing your favorite Disney characters brought to life is a memorable and magical experience there's Mickey Minnie Donald wait what just happened was it magic I am sorry to disappoint Disney may be known for magic but there's a simple explanation for all of that so let's dive into how Disney characters animatronic phases work but be aware the following few minutes will probably ruin the magic for you animatronic Disney characters appeared first in welcome to COO corner in 1983 TV show 2007 was the first year they could be spotted at Disney parks at Magic Kingdom to be exact at the moment they can only be seen at shows but some people were allowed to test meeting talking characters there was also a talking Mickey at Magic Kingdom but he isn't available for meet and greets nowadays so there are three types of techniques to make characters blink and talk the first one being Mex a MEK is a device that the performer holds in their hand pulling down a lever attached to one or two fingers opens the mouth or closes the eyelids of a character another option of moving a character's mouth our invite cards most characters heads are made of rubber so they come to life easily [Music] [Applause] [Music] but these two techniques have got many flaws on the one hand they can malfunction easily on the other hand they often look very bad and unnatural when the character performer is not hiding them under some rapid movement [Music] this is where option 3 comes in auto mech during shows the character's eyes and mouth movement is synced to a track the receiver placed in their hands receives it through a radio frequency and all facial movements happen automatically for emergencies a mech is still built into suits like these so the performers can mimic the scheduled audio if the system doesn't work the articulated heads are used when characters appear at events such as ribbon-cutting ceremonies news show appearances game show appearances Hospital visitations and other live events in these situations the performer within the costume is still disallowed from speaking instead the dialogue is often instead over by the characters respective voice actor [Applause] [Music]
