in the godfather 2 we are reintroduced to don michael corleone in the middle of making the biggest deal the criminal underworld had ever seen propelling the corleone family to both gain legitimacy but at the same time an enormous amount of power and influence michael was partnering with known mob associate hyman roth renowned for his business acumen and money-making skills for the mafia they were about to make the biggest deal in mafia history however as we all know by now roth had other intentions behind this deal we find out that roth was conspiring with someone within the corleone family against michael all that is clearly shown in the film but what confuses many people and some couldn't really understand as it was intricately shown was how it seems michael almost instantly knew exactly who it was and that's what we will uncover how did michael know it was roth before he somewhat unintentionally confesses born as hyman sachowski hyman spent his early life in hell's kitchen new york in the early 1920s while working as a car mechanic he was noticed by peter clemenza for his skills so clemenza introduced him to vito corleone to have him work for them but how did he get the name hyman roth clemenza hated hyman's name and wanted to call in johnny lips but thanks to vito who probably disliked that name even more wanted to give him a better name and so asked him who was his biggest inspiration sachewski told him arnold scene i know steve i like that hello and we call you a ham and rusty roth worked diligently for the corleone family during prohibition and was a close friend and ally of mo greene the creator of las vegas under don corleone roth worked closely with the corleone family and got his start through molasses out of havana when you were a baby the trucks owned by your father oh my father did business with hyman roth he respected him even though don vito and roth had a decent relationship it is suggested however that vito never fully trusted roth or his associates including johnny ola your father did business with hyman roth your father respected i am at ralph but your father never trusted hyman roth or a sicilian messenger boy johnny over roth relied on very few men and very few under his control over the years this helped him keep under the radar of the authorities for many years allowing to continuously expand his power and influence roth himself had little in the way of fighting power he was shrewd enough to use his partners to provide him with all the muscle he needed his ability to generate such enormous profits for him and his partners gave him immense influence and a sort of political invincibility in the underworld nearly all of roth's most bitter rivals realized he was far too valuable an asset to lose and his partners were determined to protect their moneymaker at all costs even if they distrusted or disliked him the only one left because he always made money for his partners by the late 1950s roth was based in a very quiet neighborhood in miami as a middle class man with his wife marsha hiding the fact he is a multi-millionaire and one of the most powerful and influential figures in the criminal underworld with contacts in very high places [Music] hello mike welcome to las vegas at this time michael had completely moved the family business to nevada and had began rebranding the family image michael was now in his mid-30s named clemenza as conciliary and head of the family's new york operations clemenza later died of a supposed heart attack and was replaced by longtime loyal family friend and soldier frank pentangili michael was now firmly entrenched as the most powerful crime boss in the country but this didn't fulfill his ambitions therefore steps up his efforts to finally accomplish his vision and ambition to make the corleone empire legitimate fulfilling his promise to his family five years the corleone family is going to be completely legitimate trust me however he finds that it isn't as easy or simple as he had once thought he begins working out a deal with a well-known mob associate hyman roth however michael was looking into taking over the casino business in las vegas they were about to become rivals but they both decided it was in their interest to work together and so roth agreed to allow michael to take a cut from the casinos without getting in his way but i've been instructed to tell you that if you move clingman out a friend in miami will go along but as well taking over a few major casinos in vegas michael's business dealings were about to get even more in depth with roth michael travels to cuba to forge a major deal with hyman roth and his associates with the cuban government this historic deal would propel the corleone family and all participants into a new level opening completely new opportunities they could have only dreamed of the deal was that the cuban government allow them to conduct their operations in cuba freely without any interference from the government authorities giving them complete freedom from any laws or regulations they would have to face in the united states in return they are to provide generous payments to the president batista this would involve some of the biggest and most powerful individuals and organizations in the criminal underworld all carving up a piece of this insanely profitable venture while allowing them to coexist and work together rather than just fighting one thing i learned from paul was to try to think as people around you think now on that basis anything's possible after the attempt on michael's life that he very narrowly managed to survive michael now must uncover who was behind the attempt he had to question the loyalty of everyone around him although it would be impossible to instantly know who was responsible he knew someone within the family was involved unless i'm very wrong they're dead already they're killed by somebody close to us and i want everybody here to know there's not going to be no trouble for me don't carry on could it have been frank pentangili as he was the most obvious suspect having had a tense confrontation with michael and being a very high ranking member in the organization with his resources he could have very easily been the culprit another suspect would be hyman roth but what could he have to gain from taking michael out nobody wants another one or was it someone else was there someone else in the family coordinating the elimination so despite his numerous suspicions michael didn't really know for certain who it was and so had to continue to play along to lure out the real culprit you see all our people are businessmen their loyalties based on that thankfully there was one person who michael could with complete certainty rule out as the traitor and that person was tom hagan it's because i admire you and i love you that i kept things secret from you that's why at this moment you're the only one i can completely trust since michael from the very start left tom out this deal he knew outsiders wouldn't bother try to have tom turn on michael and the family tom isn't going to sit in with us johnny he only handles specific areas of the family business tom sure might after the attempt michael travels to miami to finally meet with hyman roth for the first time they discussed the incident and michael convinces roth that he had absolutely zero suspicions of him being involved and plays along the idea that it was all pentangles doing important thing is that nothing interferes with our plans for the future yours or not nothing is more important roth plays along acting like he is genuinely concerned he plays the role of being the old but wise mentor michael needs to accomplish something he never could have dreamed of at this point it's not quite clear if michael was completely certain roth was guilty or not just from this meeting but what is clear is that his suspicion of roth's involvement was definite and now the person he suspected the most this cemented his suspicion before even traveling to meet him in miami but what prevented michael from being completely certain was roth's motives especially that they were about to set up the biggest deal the criminal underworld had ever seen why would roth want him dead therefore michael plays along to see what roth was planning what do you think michael was thinking after speaking with roth something very subtle but very interesting is when michael brings up the idea that he will take out pentangially roth responded these small potatoes this moment might be the only hint we have that ruled out frankie as the one behind this even though as we mentioned earlier the most obvious suspect was frank pentangili frank pantangili came to my home and he asked my permission to get rid of the risottos when i refused he tried to have me killed he was stupid i was lucky i'll visit him soon he had the motive and the resources to enable him to attempt such an audacious plan but frankie was definitely not the traitor the main factor that put frankie as a suspect was his tense exchange with michael where he was ordered not to attack the rosato brothers and instead work with them and allow them to take what they want [Music] let's not forget the only reason frank was talking so boldly with michael nearing disrespect towards his dawn was the fact he was very drunk otherwise we later see him almost nervous to even talk to michael dangolion i i wish you would have let me know you were coming i could have prepared something for you i didn't want you to know i was coming and so it dawned on michael that it couldn't have been pentangley as it wasn't in his nature and he was an old-school mobster growing up with the likes of don vito and capo peter clemenza where loyalty was held above all else i like you you were loyal to my father for years also frankie never showed any sign of betrayal the furthest he would dare to go is probably disobey the dawn and there was a very slim chance of even that i want you to help me take my revenge after meeting with both roth and pentangley michael's suspicions grew even more however he could now almost definitely rule out frankie his genuine hatred for roth and his associates as well as his longtime loyalty to the family made him the least likely to gain or benefit anything from betraying the corleone empire so this leaves roth as the only suspect left however this leaves michael with even more questions than before mainly why is roth doing all this but more importantly who within the corleone family was helping roth and had betrayed the family he needed to lure them out before they managed to strike again [Music] so now we have a clear view of everything surrounding this situation we now understand how and why michael concluded it was rough from what we can tell michael did know that roth was somewhat involved in conspiring against him however up until they finally went to cuba to finalize their deal michael still could not figure out what exactly roth was up to or why he was doing all this as we mentioned michael didn't have the full picture to know that it was roth all along but even so he never trusted him and needed to go on as normal to keep roth at ease with his guard down following his father's principle of he taught me keep your friends close put your enemies closer he needed to stay close to roth as it was the only way to uncover what he was scheming in lure out the traitor therefore michael didn't know to what capacity roth was involved he could have been aiding someone trying to overthrow michael and take his place as michael knows by now roth uses people as puppets putting them up against each other then when it's convenient he throws them away but there is a specific moment we want to point out that could be the exact moment michael's suspicions are confirmed in havana roth tells michael that his share of the money needed for the business venture did not arrive therefore could ruin the entire deal however in his anger roth unintentionally loosens up the fake mentor persona he was playing allowing michael to see his true nature he finally understands that roth was playing him the whole time roth only needed michael to put up the money and his connections into the deal once the deal is confirmed he'll have no use for him as roth is the only official connection between the mob and the cuban president also given roth's reputation as being treacherous it was conceivable that this whole time he was just using michael for his own gain another key insight michael brilliantly uncovered while studying roth was that the whole helpless wise old man persona was just an act he realized roth was delusional and still thought he could completely take over believing he was going to live for many years to come it was roth all along he acts like i'm his son his successor but he thinks he's going to live forever he wants me out so now michael knows who's been after him all along he now needs to find out who was the traitor within the family but even more importantly why and how did roth manage to play such a brilliant deception on him without him realizing roth had orchestrated such an eloquent plan cornering the most powerful criminal empire the world had ever seen how was michael able to take on such a well-made trap [Music] so
