[Music] on her wedding day diana's grace and beauty captivated the world the 20 year old bride was everybody's dream of a fairy tale princess 700 million people watched her on her wedding day and they went on watching her she became the most photographed and easily the most recognized woman in the world she had no experience of royal life her future lay in the hands of her husband charles the man destined to become king thirteen years later the dream had shattered diana is on the run escaping the prying eyes of the press trying to forget her past and picking up the pieces to start a new independent life it had all begun so well [Music] scenes of the newly engaged happy couple concealed the truth during their engagement charles was having an affair with his longtime friend and confidant camilla parker-bowles shortly before the wedding a blonde woman was seen leaving the royal train in the dark of the night naturally everybody assumed it was diana when they saw that there was a blonde on the train and they discovered it they naturally assumed that it was diana not a bit of it it was camilla parker bowles it must have alerted her even at 19 she must have realized something was quite wrong and she must have grown suspicious that men don't don't conduct their courtships not even a prince with having these married women forever poking over her shoulder forever watching every step she took forever giving him advice the specter of another woman in her husband's life was to haunt diana for the rest of her marriage but at the end of their honeymoon in scotland the truth was concealed from the cameras an art that diana would learn to use to perfection these romantic scenes hid the reality of the situation after his marriage to the young and beautiful diana charles continued to see camilla the moment that he left balmoral at the end of their two-month honeymoon he went hunting in wiltshire and hunting in that pack on the same day was camilla parker-bowles [Music] hunting was camilla's territory meaning that she could have charles all to herself she had sized up diana a long time ago i mean camilla parker was called her the mouse and and told charles to marry her because she was dim she was an uneducated rather naive girl from from a split home she would do as she was told she was very young she would have to be molded of course she would do it she was told didn't understand there was a bit of a spark in diana diana used that spark to perfection she brought a natural style and glamour to the royal family that even camilla could not have envisaged she used her femininity and sex appeal to grab the public's attention all the time that charles had a relationship with diana diana was so concerned about her own life and about her own problems and everything else like that that she was unable to think about the problems which charles faced which as a future king he had immense pressures charles and camilla met at polo in 1971 their attraction was mutual and continued beyond her marriage to guards officer andrew parker-bowles she was able to satisfy him in a way that no other woman ever has done she was able to mother him in a way that no other woman was able to do including may i say the queen the queen was no mother to prince charles and prince charles needed somebody to whom he could put he could put his head on their shoulder and camilla did all these things for him she was both mother and lover in a most marvelous relationship queen had an understanding ear for diana's troubles but her distance and position didn't provide the married couple with a natural shoulder to cry on i would think that the queen was involved in in the marital difficulties purely as a as a mother would be a mother and mother-in-law just in in being there to offer advice and and suggest things and try and make life a little easier i would be very surprised if she actively interfered prince philip dealt with family matters in a more offhand and down-to-earth way dismissing human frailty as a character weakness he's often accused of being uncaring as a father he's a man of uncertain temper is he not and while the queen tries to spread oil on the waters and try to broke her between the warring couples and all the rest of it i suspect that he just stamped his foot and told them to pull themselves together which perhaps might not have been as helpful as it could have been in the circumstances the queen's marriage to prince philip spans more than 40 years from the outset he pulled on the leash now in his 70s has always found royal life rather boring and tedious charles doesn't have to look too far back for an example of royal decorum obviously men do tend to imitate their fathers to a large extent he's a guy who seems rather striking and stern but when a lady comes into the room those eyes even in the 70s those eyes sparkle and the witch is turned on he's very much a ladies man princess elizabeth was 21 when she married prince philip of greece they first met when she was 17 and according to historians she fell in love with him immediately after charles's birth it became apparent that philip preferred life away from court circles he returned to his old bachelor haunts around town the queen was kept in the picture by her ally and sister margaret it's known that she suffered very bad depressions that were well helped from withheld from the public um the palace had to announce in the mid 50s that there was no rift in the royal couple if you think back the kind of coverage they had in the 50s that really was very very striking very unusual to take such a step it was rumored when prince philip was going on voyages on the britannia around the world that something was very badly wrong a particular voyage took place early part of 59. he did come back in april which is fortunate because prince andrew was born the next february so um that that tended to to make people think that the marriage was on a much more solid footing after that royal marriages need common ground and understanding diana found polo rather boring and often left charles alone to enjoy his favorite sport this was charles's territory besides there were other attractions camilla parker-bowles came to watch she and charles have many interests in common hunting architecture painting and art but it is the strong animal attraction of polo which particularly binds them charles excels at polo and for once he is allowed to show off in public his father played as a young man and charles inherited his love for the game the sport encourages a definite sexual tension and a secret language develops between spectator and player it's the sport of kings and aristocratic aphrodisiac it's the one thing that gets upper-class english women really going more than anything else they see these men sweating on horses which themselves are sweating pushing these animals around and violent exercise the moment these guys get off they are um flushed with excitement the women throw themselves at them this is the upper-class woman's aphrodisiac the royal family's love affair with polo doesn't stop with camilla in his younger army days her husband andrew himself an accomplished horseman had an affair with princess anne she found his charm too hard to resist well they were young lovers everybody knows that um i don't think she's ever bothered to hide it and he just became one of one of her sort of support circle he's somebody who takes her to to ask it or to the races and so on i don't think there's anything in it now it was through her passion for horses that anne eventually met and fell passionately in love with a young cavalry officer captain mark phillips but their marriage was destined to finish in divorce married to royalty clashed with his successful career as a show jumper he was threatening princess anne's high profile and he was never really accepted by prince philip the royal family mart phillips actually was a very much nicer man than the british public have ever been allowed to know and he was worth ten of him a spouse with a spark will be crushed if you marry you must not try and get above your partner in public world anne eventually married for the second time but not before rumors circulated within court circles of another love affair this time with her personal bodyguard who some claim is the father of her second child zara of all the rumors that go around the british court i think that's the one that's most likely to be true i heard it's a very long time ago it's known that a bodyguard who worked for princess anne did make claims and the claims were not printed in britain but they are known about the united states for example they have been discussed in in the media there i think probably because czar is still a child that the feeling in britain is very unfair to start raking this up now but i still feel a very dark shadow over anne to the outside world anne appears aloof and frequently antisocial her relationship with diana is cool they don't see each other much i think that they're perfectly formal their greetings when they see each other but i just don't think they mix very well they don't they just don't get together in the beginning prince andrew's marriage to sarah ferguson appeared happy as the queen's second son she was relieved when he married sarah after his many adventures with less suitable companions she felt he had met his match but their marriage too was destined to end in separation as a naval officer andrew was often away at sea and during his long absences his lonely wife turned to other men for support their breakup was finally sealed after photographs appeared in the tabloid press of sarah cavorting on holiday with her lover in the south of france for the queen it was the final blow she must really feel very sick at heart that now younger members of the family and their scandals are paraded over the front of the tabloids i mean it must be soul destroying because she's worked so hard to make the royal family what it is today but hard work is not enough for her part the queen has to face up to the fact that however perfect her public role she's failed to give her children the guidance they needed for stable marriages reflecting on her own privileged background and sense of duty she lacked natural motherly feelings i don't think actually she ever ever had a great maternal instinct i think she was a natural normal part of the upper class the upper class have never really wanted to see much of their children they've always been delighted the children having been brought in at 5 30. they've always been delighted to hear the nanny at the door at six o'clock and then they could go back to their own lives and i think the queen was actually a typical example of that preoccupied with the affairs of state and her passion for horses the queen has been far too lenient with her children when duty called they always took second place the people who know her extremely well over a long period of years who are very fond of her will growl and say if she'd taken as much trouble over the raising of her children as she did over the raising and the breeding of her racehorses things would have been better surrounded by servants and sycophants one of the great disadvantages of royal life is that it's very unreal they're less a family than a club they became independent at very early ages were expected to stand on their own feet that the queen is the as the boss of the household so to speak and prince philip were both pretty tough don't whinge don't complain about uh tough engagements um just get on with it they weren't really a family in the warmest possible sense although they they could laugh together and joke together but the deeper things there somehow wasn't a kind of framework in which those things could be discussed and i think that's a tremendous weakness there's no doubt that the popularity of some of the young royals went to their heads deaf to advice they grew up with the sense that they could do no wrong the temptation to become arrogant is tremendous and they fell into that temptation there's no question about that at all i mean you had circumstances where you'd got somebody like prince andrew for example leaving a car near st james's palace um the police say who does that car belong to nobody knew they're about to carry out a controlled explosion on the car fortunately it was discovered it was his in time so he rolls up at the palace later and says those stupid policemen the coaches who were there on that particular occasion wish in retrospect that they said it's not they the police or the fools you're the you're the fool sir but nobody said it andrew is never at a loss to express himself particularly when bystanders get in his way [Music] [Music] hello [Music] into this royal family came diana a beautiful english rose daughter of an earl more aristocratic than the german-worn ancestors of the house of windsor a sensitive shy girl with a caring and understanding nature good looks and a sense of style and glamour setting her apart from the rest of the royal family as wife of the heir to the british throne the princess of wales is expected to do her duty and toe the line [Music] diana was only 20 when she married charles more than a century earlier his ancestor edward prince of wales had taken as his bride a young and beautiful danish princess alexandra but like his descendant prince charles edward's eye turned quickly away from his beautiful wife he needed a woman who would keep his intellect alive as well as being good looking and although alexandra was a joy to look at in the public eye in private she never shone king edward vii continued to have mistresses while alexandra embraced motherhood similarities between the plight of princess alexandra and princess diana do not stop there king edward's mistresses included the actress lily langtry and daisy countess of warwick but it was with the famous society beauty alice keppel that edward had a passionate love affair lasting 12 years alice keppel is the great grandmother of charles's mistress camilla parker-bowles camilla parker-bowles is the great-granddaughter of alice keppel which you know alexandra would probably find amazing that that woman was still causing trouble over 100 years later to the same family four generations of royalty gather for the queen mother's 94th birthday in london six of her great-grandchildren are the products of broken marriages princess diana is missing and prince andrew's wife sarah is no longer welcome for the queen mother it is a poignant reminder of the shape of royalty she will leave behind she understands the pressure of royal marriages and in return for diana's hard work she wants a fair and just settlement for her she has been talking to charles trying to dissuade him from divorce saying that diana must be accorded a position of honor and respectability as mother of a future king and that to denigrate her is to help destroy the monarchy happy when her grandson married diana the queen mother recognized many of her own strengths in the character of his new bride they were both strangers to royal life when they married into it in the people's affections diana was a natural successor to the queen mother in the beginning everybody compared them and said these are two commoners who've got the same sort of charm and they're both distant they were both destined to be queens of england and that they would have a similar effect in enchanting and charming the world diana brought to the image of royalty a unique and personal blend of style dignity and glamour within the strict confines of royalty that was her power base the moment she stepped off her plane her image would find its way onto television screens and front pages around the world ultimately this attention was to prove her undoing drawing the limelight off other members of the royal family created jealousy and intolerance [Music] but there were compensations during a visit to bond the princess arrived at a dinner wearing for the first time in public a matching set of exquisite sapphire and diamond jewels a gift from the sultan of oman we saw the princess turn up wearing a magnificent sapphire and diamond necklace and we asked a member of her touring party who foolishly told us so that was a gift from the sultan of oman and jewellers quickly told us it was they estimated the worth to be about half a million pounds and we were astonished because none of this had been revealed previously the princess she really did well uh i remember in kuwait she was given a chest of gold jewelry you know every kind of gel rings bracelets necklaces all in and that gold in the middle east is is 22 karat the best the purest gold diana has been given a queen's ransom in jewels there's the queen mary tiara from the windsor family originally worn by queen mary the spencer family tiara was a gift from diana's father her clothes reflect the customs of the country she visits she had to be much more modest in her dress you know ankle length skirts covered arms covered shoulders um which meant her designers had to produce a whole range of of clothes that she could wear just for a week and later on they were adapted she had them cut down and changed so that she could wear them on other occasions and i remember diana had a had a white dress i think it was done designed by the emanuels with a fan shape here on the on the neckline it was very modest came across here in long sleeves well in london she wouldn't wear things like that with long sleeves much she'd have daring necklines or backless dresses diana continued to catch people's attention hats were a key part of her style she had nearly a hundred and help make them fashionable again fashion experts complimented her publicly saying she should be on the cover of vogue magazine her sense of style and good taste did an enormous amount to boost the british fashion industry [Music] her hair went up and down but this got her into trouble with the royal family when she was accused of upstaging the queen she may have been cover girl all over the world she may be on time magazine she may be on newsweek she may be on every magazine you've ever seen in your life but the royal family took absolutely no notice of her whatsoever and she got sick of this she wanted to be able to show that she had some power within the royal family and she learned how to upstage members of the royal family in 1984 at the state opening of parliament princess diana arrived with the queen at the palace of westminster an annual event it's one of the most important constitutional occasions in the royal year on this occasion there were gasps from the crowd as she stepped from the coach she had changed her hairstyle she turned her hair up at the back now nobody had ever seen her bare neck before now a neck is not very exciting except when diana exposes it and on this occasion she did it was front page everywhere the queen was beside herself with anger princess margaret took her aside and told her that she must never ever upstage the queen again for diana the incident was a stark reminder of the forces at work within the royal family later on an official tour of australia she was again accused of upstaging another member of the royal family this time it was her husband during a visit to charles's old music school he was invited by his professor to play a few notes on the cello obviously embarrassed he'd forgotten how to play [Music] [Music] he made his pathetic attempts with a cello to try and appease the audience he didn't want to do it in the first place but he was forced to do it and she could not wait to stride across that room to that piano to sit down and to start playing away splashing chords [Music] her performance was greatly appreciated particularly by the professor embarrassed diana exited in a hurry yet again she had stolen the limelight [Applause] while ever she upstaged him he was going to resent her presence at his side and he couldn't overcome that so therefore he could never look upon her as a wife and a companion and a soul mate he was just so upset by the fact that she was more popular than he was away from home the endless round of public duties and official engagements took on a different style in australia the warm and welcoming crowd provided diana with a platform to show off her own brand of royalty distinctive and infectious it reflected positively on charles and made him more relaxed had he been able to fulfill his dream and settle in australia his marriage to diana might have taken a very different course the relaxed atmosphere on a building site in canberra summed up their relationship left alone diana's unique balance of dignity and relaxed charm gave her an edge over her husband this newfound self-confidence put her on a collision course with charles something he didn't anticipate when he married her i think he probably thought this is a an inexperienced young lady who will learn to fit in who will till the line as the years go by and i think he found that she was less pliable as time went on she didn't have the taste he had she wanted to indulge her own naturally indulge her own taste she turned into a person who was going to fight back this was the secure and reassuring public face of royalty on display younger members of the royal family acting out their roles but beneath the show business facade their marriage was a sham diana made attempts to win back charles there was enormous pride at stake as she had been rejected by her husband and the royal system the marriage was over but no one was ready to admit it charles could remain married to diana for the rest of his life he had camilla safely at his elbow and with her support he was confident that he could withstand most of life's knocks pictures like these transmitted around the world and into millions of homes with the images of a marriage charles wanted the world to think he enjoyed [Music] diana had achieved what she had set out to do to become princess of wales she had worn two children in pursuit of her husband's dynastic ambitions she had become a world icon and a very important person in her own right she lacked love but most other things were in place on a visit to india it was increasingly obvious that the couple were spending less time together diana claimed that the pressure of royal duties kept them apart outwardly she remained calm and continued her duties under intense pressure her compensation was the world's attention keeping her firmly in the spotlight it made her the world's number one cover girl i think it made us all adore her it brought the monarchy closer to the people and it helped her to raise awareness of many deserving charities like the aids charities that she's involved with and the the um the british leprosy trust now very few people are interested in leprosy because it's a third world problem and um it's people thought that it went out with the ark but uh it's still very virulent in many countries and she did so much for that and so if she hadn't been a glamorous good-looking woman uh there's no way that people would have used her picture and promoted the fact that she was doing this work if she had been playing with with spectacles and you know plats or something or a bad perm nobody would have followed her around the world [Music] with their marriage problems still strictly speaking a private affair they embarked on an official visit to indonesia there were occasions though when the heat of the moment was even too much for diana's natural coolness [Music] an opportunity to get back at representatives of the sniping press did not go amiss diana aimed at their feet and scored a bullseye [Applause] monotonous world tours exposed their public life to the utmost scrutiny but clues of their marriage difficulties were kept well hidden from their hosts and the cameras occasionally though diana would be caught in another world preoccupied with her own thoughts away from home charles would keep in constant touch by telephone with camilla always in need of his comfort cushion diana's style always captivated her audience wherever she went dressed to honor local customs during a visit to the gulf states she put an enormous amount of thought and consideration into how she should be courteous to her hosts and suitably dressed for the occasion diana's personal appearance on royal tours did an enormous amount to promote britain's image abroad she will be sadly missed now that she has disappeared from public life as royal visits go by almost totally unnoticed boosted by all the attention diana made sure there was no shortage of smiles all round no one wanted to believe that the royal marriage of the century was on the rocks but as the cracks began to appear diana went on the defensive and one of my colleagues actually said to the princess when we're in spain with them in the spring of 1987 what's all this about your separate lives and she said oh she said it was all nonsense and she thought that these stories were so far-fetched the next story she'd read in a newspaper would be that she had a black lover and we all joked about that and she really convinced us that there was nothing in them at all and it was inconceivable to us that this couple would ever separate we thought they wouldn't be allowed to that for the for the sake of the nation and their duty they would stick together no matter what and we knew that all marriages have rough patches and we figured that they would work things out and we thought well she seemed so devoted to him and of course she was then she was battling to save her marriage desperately during a family holiday in spain as guests of king juan carlos and his family charles appeared distant and preoccupied these arranged pictures of happy family life told a different story charles left early from this holiday and returned to balmoral to be with camilla i think she tried every trick in the book everything that a normal woman wants to do to interest a man and to win him back unfortunately he he just didn't respond he he is a sort of man that's looking for a soul mate an intellectual soul mate especially and although she shared his love of opera and they had two children in common it was too late he was already too involved with camilla and and she provided him with the understanding that that he needed the pressure was beginning to tell on diana she was suffering from the slimmer's disease bulimia nervosa and her friends were worried about her loss of weight only at ease with her friends and acquaintances this was a low period in her life she needed help and turned to many friends for support and understanding one of those people was her bodyguard and close friend barry manike who later died tragically in a road accident diana was heartbroken manicki had died in a in a car accident quite tragically and suddenly and diana was given the news just as she was leaving to go on this official engagement where she had to smile and look happy and of course she was very upset now there were stories afterwards that her friendship had been rather too close to this bodyguard but i've never believed that because at the time dinah was still very much in love with her husband trying to win him back but more than that there were a lot of stories about barry manicke's involvement with other women another close friend is the art expert and gallery owner oliver hall a married man with three children tape telephone conversations reveal diana's close relationship with james gilby a successful second-hand car salesman she's had strange relationships with her but what she's never been able to do is throw herself wholeheartedly into a love affair which is what the world wants her to have they wanted to see her having a really great love affair with a wonderful man who looks really great and is going to carry her off in her arms and this just hasn't happened for her and her life is a shambles [Music] alone with her children on a winter holiday in the caribbean diana is now officially separated from charles she's a single mom sharing custody of the two young princes determined to give them the kind of childhood charles did not enjoy as a boy and a better understanding of normal family values holidays are precious moments for her and she grabs every opportunity she can to have her sons to herself [Music] winter holidays in the sea followed by winter sports in the snow [Music] charles has the boys in the summer at balmoral in scotland followed by a mediterranean holiday with friends to compensate for their parents bad marriage the young princes enjoy an endless round of good times it just goes on endlessly and i think that's too much for any child i think it it destroys their sense of proportion and any kind of values they might have because normal children don't get so much i think they're getting too much too soon dialer is determined that her boys are prepared for the outside world in a way unknown to previous royal generations but in doing so there is a danger that she's bringing them up as little rich kids i'm not so worried myself about them being brought up as rich men's children i think inevitably that's the way the royal family are likely to be brought up in large part what i'm far more worried about is what the effect of their parents disagreements will have on them diana sees her children as her emotional anchor to spend more time with them was her main reason for bowing out of public life [Music] at school sports stage she's always there to give her support memories of her own disrupted childhood and parents divorce have made her more determined than ever to soften the blow of her own marriage problems on her children [Music] she lavishes them with affection cuddles and love [Music] even charles agrees that emotionally she is a generous mother i think he agrees that she's a very good mother and she's very devoted to them and i'm sure he likes the way they've grown up with beautiful manners and that they're pretty normal children i think he appreciates the fact that she takes them out to ordinary places ordinary kids girl they queue up for hamburgers and go to the cinema etc because that's something he realizes is important to give your children a well-adjusted life in the future when they've grown up and to to experience what ordinary members of the british public experience so i think he thinks that diana is interesting the boys in the more frivolous aspects of life which are probably important for a future king but that he will give them the grounding in the serious things and and be a supporter of the education they're getting at school encourage them to take the intellectual bent that he himself enjoys [Music] [Music] [Music] in charles's absence the role of surrogate father is played by a personal bodyguard a small price the royal children have to pay [Music] they're really affected by it i think especially william he's seen the unhappiness of his mother and he loves his father too much to blame him so he's very confused about the rights and wrongs of the whole situation your highnesses thank you very much indeed for being with us in cardiff today to launch this new marketing initiative i would invite prince william around highness to unveil the new strap line for cardiff marketing preparing william for his royal duties is a task he must endure against the background of his own parents separation and the tradition of monarchy his mother is aware of the problems facing her young son thrown into her marriage at 20 diana had a crash course in royal role playing william has a little longer to learn the technique of the royal walkabout william seems to suffer a lot whenever he faces the media and he's very sensitive boy perhaps because he's the elder one and he's taking it all more seriously than his brother because he's the one who's going to have to cope with it most in life later on and we found that william will hang his head and shy away from the cameras etc and um in 1994 when we were skiing with the princess at lek williams seemed to perk up and be very different and i congratulated her on this and i said william's a changed boy and she said yes i've sorted him out she said i gave him a talking to and he's he's okay now unfortunately that didn't last very long and i noticed that later on he was once again trying to draw back from the cameras it was very evident on the queen mother's birthday on her 94th birthday when william hung to the back of the crowd and his father turned around and called him forward and the queen mother heard him and said come on william and dragged him out to the front where paul william didn't like it at all but he's put on a brave smile but he would not look at the cameras harry was looking at everybody to see who was there but william kept looking away all the time at his grandmother and wouldn't face the cameras [Applause] in 1990 everything seemed like happy families at the palace the royal family appeared united for the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the battle of britain [Music] it was business as usual for royal mothers with their restless children and marching bands [Music] but this was the beginning of a new decade the start of a traumatic period for the wild family [Music] as the storm clouds gathered diana was spending more and more time away from charles while she stayed in london he preferred to be at highgrove the family home in gloucestershire and close to camilla parker bowles but this was christmas time and all the royal family were guests of the queen at sandringham it was a windy affair diana made her solitary way back from church to face the rest of christmas with a family she felt increasingly isolated from she doesn't like sandringham she doesn't like particularly i think mixing with the rest of the family because there are all kinds of of waves and feelings there i mean it can't be very easy publicly the royal marriages appeared to be still intact behind the palace walls the warring factions were left to sort out their own problems diana's alleged five-year relationship with james hewitt revealed in his book princess in love suggests that she responded to charles's infidelity with camilla by having a love affair with the young guards officer vision have been in the job for many years now certainly the queen and especially the queen mother were prepared to go along with the charade that this was a happy marriage as long as nobody broke the rules the rules eventually were broken we did discover that charles was having his relationship with camilla we did discover that diana had become besotted first by james hewitt then by james gilby and then by others subsequently and the whole thing unraveled very badly indeed and what it does show is that the royal family of this present generation have less control over their destiny than any other generation in the past 10 centuries [Music] control of their destiny is vested on the desire of people to have a royal family the world's media didn't want to believe that the beautiful princess was about to walk out on her prince charming newspapers and magazines raved about diana selling millions of copies saying how wonderful she looked nobody wanted to believe that the fairy tale marriage was over the truth of the matter is that the british press was so in love with this wonderful fairy story the prince and the princess the two young princes living happily they didn't want to break the stream they didn't want to shatter this dream and nobody ever looked at it and for years and years people would make arch remarks about charles and camilla parker bowles and the british press would just turn their heads like that they didn't want to have anything to do with it they didn't want to know when the story of diana and charles's marriage breakdown exploded in 1992 it was with cruel irony that the family home wins the castle burst into flames the fire was a symbol of a malaise within the very institution of the monarchy in march it was announced that the duke and duchess of york were to separate [Music] in april the 18-year marriage of princess anne and mark phillips ended in a four-minute quickie divorce in june princess diana broke down in tears days after the publication of a book revealed the truth of her unhappy marriage to prince charles [Music] in august intimate photographs were published to the duchess of york cavorting topless on holiday in france with her lover and financial advisor in november on a state visit to korea diana and charles's relationship was so bad that they could hardly look at each other leaked tape recordings emerged confirming charles's long relationship with his mistress camilla parker-bowles in december an announcement by the prime minister to parliament confirmed that the prince and princess of wales were to separate finally the queen attended a banquet in london and summed up her feelings as a monarch wife and mother whose family in home have suffered immeasurable damage 1992 is not a year on which i shall look back with undiluted pleasure in the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondence it has turned out to be an anus horribilis a ghastly year for them which i think really dented their authority quite badly if hollywood had actually tried to they'd spent a year trying to think up a script they couldn't conceivably have put such nutty things into it the royal family is slowly recovering the institution of monarchy won't die overnight because of a few broken marriages it survived the constitutional crisis 60 years ago when king edward viii abdicated to marry an american divorcee wallace simpson whether charles will ever marry camilla after his divorce from diana is an open question either way his future is in the hands of the women who surround him i think if he wanted to succeed to the throne there's no question that he could marry kumar that is totally out i think if he and i think he does want to succeed to the throne because he feels with all his qualifications about the things he would rather not be doing i think he does feel a very strong sense of duty i think he wants to be a good king i think he wants to fulfill the quote role that he's got in life i'd love to think that they could get married because i think they would be a wonderful husband a wife queen camilla well i don't know that the british public will wear that i'm not even sure that the world will wear the world would probably laugh what they want is they want the excitement the um style the the panache the joadavir of diana diana will be a hard act to follow the perfect princess but not the perfect wife to her adoring public she was the image of the fairy tale princess to her uncaring husband she was a disappointment marriage diana brought out the worst in charles but by some quirk of fate she could still take her place next to him on his throne it's conceivable that they could both attend a coronation from different houses sit in the same abbey and be crowned he crowned king she crowned consort although they don't speak hardly speak to each other they don't live under the same roof they can hardly bear each other it's technically possible the queen died tomorrow he would accede to the throne he would be caught king charles ii she would be queen diana de facto whatever the outcome diana has to watch over her sons if her husband is denied the throne because of his relationship with camilla young william could become king sooner than he thinks i think she feels that she will make william a better king than his father could because she will bring him into closer contact with the public and that he won't be an aloof man in an ivory tower living this sort of academic life that charles might prefer and i think she sees that the secret of success of the monarchy is not to be too elitist since her separation from charles diana has retired from public life the world of royal duties is losing its prime performer diana's ability to keep royalty in tune with the changing attitudes of society will be missed it's sad because she achieved so much for the nation as well as for the monarchy she filled an amazing gap in the ranks of the royal family that we didn't realize was there until she came along she was our golden girl and what she did i think too helped to glamorize the last major monarchy on earth and and made it internationally renowned she helped the status of great britain enormously because everybody was interested in our princess [Music] on a visit to india in 1992 the charade of diana's marriage to charles was almost over at 31 diana faced a future denied of married love of which she dreamed since her unhappy childhood officially her relationship with charles was still a happy one but gradually it shifted to one of mutual indifference diana increasingly acquired a sense of destiny the flame for charles flickered and died in a clumsy attempt to prove publicly his affection for her the prince tried to kiss his wife she rebuffed his advances the dam it seemed was about to burst sarah duchess of york now accepts that she was simply not cut out to join the royal family she admitted in a newspaper interview that she had messed up her life we all make serious mistakes and we learn from them she claimed for sarah it's been a difficult time but she always put on a happy face and fulfilled her royal duties with dignity when she married andrew she took on the role of a duchess enthusiastically and looked forward to supporting her husband she had high expectations of her marriage with andrew perhaps a little too high i think she really hoped that that it would be something that it perhaps wasn't diana's shy die image was in sharp contrast to sarah's extrovert mana a professional woman an expert skier sarah had a career in publishing she was confident of her own identity and seemed far more prepared than diana for the pitfalls of a royal marriage under the intense scrutiny of the media but here was gerald sarah was a complete breath of fresh air you know who loved sort of larking about and having the odd glass of champagne it was very much frowned upon but i mean it was just fun it was just giggly it was relaxation it was an ally they could they could they could have a good old gossip about how ghastly the situation was [Music] when sarah first appeared on the royal scene skiing holidays meant happier times for diana but her influence was not always appreciated by charles who was irritated by their girlish behavior in front of the press the whole thing actually was a bit embarrassing that they kept came over as a bit sort of immature really it wasn't it wasn't a good thing to do sarah ferguson brought a breath of fresh air to the stuffy royal circles they made an attractive couple he was a dashing naval officer she his exuberant partner together sarah and andrew projected a united front we're a good team anyway yes i think that's a saving grace it's the fact that in the last nine months we've discovered that we work very well together um good friends good team [Applause] the queen was relieved when andrew married sarah she was happy to see her son betrothed after his many adventures with less suitable companions she felt that andrew had met his match in sarah boding well for a strong relationship [Music] at the wedding ceremony she vowed to love and honor but not to obey him [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the couple's own mood of vitality and genuine happiness seemed to rub off creating an unusually festive royal occasion [Music] the queen never looked happier or more relaxed sadly it was the last time the royal family would present such a genuinely united front [Music] sarah was not a purebred english rose in the mould of her friend and royal confident princess diana in the early days family gatherings at polo brought the two girls closer together for once diana could stay in the background and let her sister-in-law do the honours sarah was roped in for the prize giving come rain or shine a royal consort must perform her duties on this occasion it's all in the family brother-in-law charles is in the winning team and the young prince william is there to give his support another close friend of the royal family was sarah's father major ronald ferguson who was prince charles's polo manager for almost 20 years diana and sarah first met at a polo match and together brought valuable new blood into a royal house of essentially german stock now british royalty will certainly be able to claim a more british ancestry but how would these two lively young women fit into the traditions of monarchy and the atmosphere of royal palaces if you go into buckingham palace i mean if i've ever been there it's very hushed and everybody's sort of tiptoeing around and it's like being in a hospital you know and i'm sure suddenly these two women would come along and they'd probably have a good giggle at something and everybody would turn around almost like they're in a library and go shh and i'm sure that they found that very restricting that they really couldn't just be themselves there [Music] as duchess of york sarah embraced her royal duties with enthusiasm within a year of their wedding they visited canada [Music] sarah's passion for life in general bravado was greatly admired and the young couple's relaxed manner won the hearts of the canadian people [Music] so [Music] obviously still very much in love sarah and andrew were a huge hit they were very very physically attracted and all the time we were with them on that tool we used to feel that we needed a bucket of cold water to throw over them they were so tactile obviously in love and that's very infectious they communicated this wonderful feeling of happiness to everybody around them and it made it a joy to work with them and that's why it was such a tragedy when they split up because we had seen how happy they were we hadn't seen this obvious affection with charles and diana only for a very very short time but with andrew and sarah it was clear that they were meant for each other and so happy together and they worked so well together as a team and um it just brought joy to the canadians and to everybody who saw them for diana looking good is important fashion is a way to express herself in public she relishes the opportunity to dress up and perform for her audience she doesn't smoke rarely drinks alcohol exercises regularly and swims in a cold pool every morning on official occasions she pushes food around the plate rarely eats meat and sticks to small portions of fish and salads going to great lengths to maintain her appearance but diana had this extraordinary relationship with the camera it's the same kind of thing that maolin munro had or perhaps jackie kennedy now there's a very good example because there are a lot of parallels here between jackie kennedy as the president's wife and princess diana as wife of the heir to the throne of england it was after she learned how to present herself that she became both the greatest asset of the royal family in terms of her visual style and her fashion and how the wonderful way she looked and also a problem in that she did in a way show up what look rather fussy side of the royal family a good performer diana never forgets which way the cameras are pointing don't you think we see in diana the essence of her character something that goes very deep which is a really desperate desire to please she wants to make other people feel at ease she wants all the things that a broken home a difficult childhood didn't give her she wants to feel that other people are at ease in her presence [Music] diana reflects how she feels in the clothes that she wears when she's feeling good about herself when she's in the public arena she'll wear short snappy suits very short skirts these days and when she's feeling bad she covers herself up you see her whole body more hunched she wears big sweaters long skirts and there are those occasions when she's really feeling blue when she tends to wear blue something long and droopy like that outfit just after the revelations about the breakdown of her marriage diana creates a mystique so powerful that her public is still unwilling to hear any criticism of her fashion writers acclaim her sense of style the way she can wear those dinner suits she wore this one with what's called a trump lawyer it's a kind of fake waistcoat at the front fake vest and it was so trim and neat and very smart and yet at the same time it's sort of funny it's a take on menswear it's also a joke on those stuffed shirts that british men not least her husband have to wear on official occasions it's a tremendous fun outfit her looking at her best on a visit to hong kong diana wore a strapless catherine walker cream gown with a short matching jacket with a high standing collar topped off by the dazzling queen mary tiara anna doesn't like wearing tiaras and she particularly doesn't like the one that the queen gave her which is very pretty but is heavy and she wears much more the spencer tiara with the rather interlacing of the diamonds which is very pretty but of course she also on official occasions like at the malaysian state banquet when she wore that green dress by victor edelstein very slim dress that went with the queen mary emeralds she wears the queen's personal gift which is the royal family order you it's got a little picture of the queen surrounded by diamonds and that's a very special mark of affection and it's one of those things that shows to other members of the royal family look the queen gave me this i'm one of them separated from charles alone at the d-day ceremonies her legs were regally displayed have you noticed with diana how her skirt her hemline and her shoe heels have gone up now that she feels more independent and better about herself those jimmy shoe shoes she wore a young british designer who makes lively shoes quite expensive they cost 250 pounds you know nearly 500 dollars a pair but they give diana the right kind of look slightly sexy isn't it and something that makes her look like an independent young woman on a trip to australia the press was quick to take advantage of all the bronzed bodies on display often in her desire to please diana is accused of becoming a chameleon psychologists claim that her self-esteem is so low that she feels she exists only when she takes on the coloring of her surroundings she mixes easily she is a princess in kensington a sloan ranger in knightsbridge and a very ordinary girl when in conversation with australian lifeguards she's never at a loss to expose her sexuality when the occasion arises and she knew the effect she had on men she was very very aware of it and she used it to great advantage they were all putty in her hands and i remember looking at it once and thinking what is she saying with that look and i decided that what she was saying was you know i'm gorgeous i think i'm gorgeous but remember i'm taken [Music] during her unhappy marriage to charles diana suffered from the slimming disease bulimia nervosa but since those dark days she has regained her confidence and her food preferences are common knowledge she is known to prefer pasta with creamy sauces like carbonara she likes potatoes and bacon sandwiches with white bread and cheese despite this she keeps her figure trim now for a silhouette a narrow silhouette you need to be slim and so of course she had to work at slimming down so there's been the swimming at buckingham palace in that pool she's done that very religiously swam a tremendous amount the gym she now has a personal trainer coming to her the whole time diana also goes in for a lot of beauty therapy aromatherapy massage she spends a very great deal of money if you like to look at it in financial terms on the infrastructure that's what i'd call it we're not talking about the makeup here although she's been wearing increasingly quite a lot of makeup but we're not talking about cosmetics we're talking about the foundations here [Music] ballet is still her great passion she grew too tall to pursue her own ambition to dance but now channels her enthusiasm into supporting the professionals privately she continued to use dance as part of an exercise routine for many years and although swimming now maintains her high level of fitness watching rehearsals is still a favorite occupation [Music] on formal visits diana must not be caught off guard her skirt must not blow up and the correct length of dress is all important she charmed her hosts on an official visit to japan by wearing a new evening dress created by the japanese designer yuki with a headband of diamonds and sapphires in hungary she wore an outfit by catherine walker and a hat by phillip summerville she dazzled the people of indonesia in washington a slinky evening gown by hachi stunned onlookers in paris she wore a new gown by victor edelstein the bodice and the small bolero jacket encrusted with shimmering beads [Music] hats too were a favorite with diana most of them come from philip somerville who produces the most flattering hats in london now officially out of the royal family diana feels embittered that they did not appreciate what she had done to improve their image i think she'd be quite justified in feeling bitter because uh there was a gap in the royal ranks before she came along for a young glamorous woman somebody who wasn't as aloof and dowdy as the rest of them somebody once said a newspaper columnist once said that the royal members of the royal family especially the women have the strange ability to make expensive designer clothes worth thousands look like they came from british home stores you know the retail chain and um diana was the exception to that she was like an afghan hound amongst like all the corgis elegant tall she had everything she had everything that the public expected of a woman in that position and that the rest of them didn't have that they were a dumpy frumpy lot and then along came this gorgeous girl who gave them the polish the glamour that they lacked and now that she's retired once again there's this gap in the royal ranks and it's not going to be filled in the same way until william gets himself a wife or a fiance royal status for sarah meant royal duties she performed these in her own personal relaxed manner her independence and modern ideas were at odds with the formality and protocol of the british monarchy living in a gilded cage was not her idea of being royal [Music] her dress sense came in for a lot of public attention as a naval officer andrew was away at sea for almost nine months of the year their time together was very precious and stolen kisses showed their youthful love they reveled in each other's company but moments like this were rare for most of the time they were forced to live apart and sarah found the stress of being alone hard to bear with a natural zest for life she needed the buzz of excitement when andrew wasn't around she found life within the royal confines rather dull to relieve the tedium she took her pilot's license flying was a way of life for andrew and she wanted to find out more about her husband's work not to be outdone she also decided to fly helicopters and now i know exactly what he's talking about when he goes out on the saucer so that's what i wanted to achieve so when he comes back in the evening tells him what he's been doing and i know what he's been doing with andrew away so much sarah was often on duty alone oh that's a nice name [Music] called upon to present trophies at polo matches sarah was often ensnared in the company of attractive men before she became part of the royal family she had had a four-year love affair with the millionaire formula one racing entrepreneur paddy mcnally sarah enjoyed the attention of the company of men and in andrew's absence she turned to her father for support putting him in the spotlight [Music] ronald ferguson was prince charles's polo manager a ceremonial stick marked the end of his many years as deputy chairman of the guard's polo club after the press revealed details of his visits to a massage parlor in london's west end the club committee had voted him out and the message was clear it was an emotional farewell under a cloud of scandal sarah was on hand to support him in a brave show of solidarity for both of them it was a case of putting on a stiff upper lip [Applause] [Music] [Applause] with an absentee husband the media quickly focused on sarah's performance as a single mum sarah was performing her public duties in a style the cameras had come to expect unfairly she was lampooned determined to be herself she chose to support good causes but in her own way her lack of regard for the cool stuffy performance left her wide open to criticism from royal officials [Music] and i haven't prepared a speech but i i just i'm so pleased to be here today i mean it's just wonderful and it's not very much known i think you've done a fantastic job there was fierce criticism that her speeches and general behavior were too unconventional and familiar the press often made disparaging comments on her dress sense but she was determined to survive the icy disapproval of buckingham palace and her confidence to handle the situation and dismiss the establishment was demonstrated by her liberated and relaxed fashion of bare legs short skirts and smiles all round and a new shorter hairstyle assertive body language of a new woman it's certainly true in the 20s that when people said shocking shocking those women cutting off their hair they knew something about women that women were asserting their independence when did diana first start going public with the troubles in her marriage when she chopped off her hair when did sarah ferguson start saying i want to be independent i'm fed up with these courtiers and this palace protocol she chopped off that wonderful red hair that is fergie's crowning glory sadly sarah's own guarded manner was to be her downfall [Music] in a fashionable block of flats in london's chelsea her passionate nature and her zest for life were suddenly exposed to the world when holiday photographs featuring princess beatrice and texan oil millionaire steve wyatt were discovered by a window cleaner allegations of sarah's infidelity confirmed gossip that her marriage to andrew was on the rocks in the eyes of the establishment the lonely royal mother had failed to progress from commoner to royalty under the pressure of a crumbling marriage and in the full glare of publicity andrew and sarah tried to continue with their daily lives andrew carried out his duties as a naval officer while sarah took their three-year-old daughter beatrice to and from school after weeks of speculation the announcement of the york separation was finally made details emerged after the queen's solicitor and a team of lawyers had discussed exactly how it would be arranged including the custody of the children questions were asked why the marriage had hit the rocks i think the main reason is because they were apart so much i mean i think that must be a very major factor i mean the fact that they obviously had close friendships both of them people outside the marriage i think contributed to it but i think initially i think it was the fact that he was a sailor he was abroad a great deal and i felt very sorry for fergie and that you know when she used to go to us she went to australia didn't she and there was a great outcry about the number of holidays she had and so on and yet all poor girl was doing was going to see her husband you know and i think i think that that was one of the major problems there were too many absences [Music] forces within buckingham palace closed ranks stories were leaked that sarah's extravagant and irresponsible lifestyle had caused the marriage breakup reports that the queen was unhappy were confirmed when the press claimed that the knives were out for fergie without andrew sarah had no royal protection when he was away she was very vulnerable to the shall we say the machiavellian courtiers who didn't like the way she behaved and decided that they had to rein her in very sharply now being a redhead with a bit of a temper she didn't take kindly to the methods they used i think if they'd been more subtle if they'd been more understanding more diplomatic the situation could have been avoided but they were determined that she would do things their way and she was a very independent free-spirited girl who was not going to take kindly to the sexism and the patronizing attitudes of the palace and therefore the the end result was disaster now sarah was suffering the consequences of a job she couldn't fulfill buckingham palace closed its doors on her the truth lay in her loneliness and the pressures of being royal when she tried to explain to the duke when he came home the problems that she had he just wanted to relax he didn't want to hear about problems he wanted just to have a good time for the brief period he was home and he used to say well look darling you know i don't have those problems i can't understand it you know they don't like they're not like that with me aren't you sure you this is right you know he wasn't sympathetic and in the end she decided that life was better on the outside andrew responded with a round of public engagement outwardly untouched by the scandal plans were already underway for sarah to move out of their family house with the young princesses and into rented accommodation down the road when asked he declined to answer questions about his marriage breakup it had all begun so well royal marriage is off to a good start with spontaneous signs of affection and happiness heirs to the throne and a promised future built on mutual support and public partnership all the queen's grandchildren products have broken marriages yet set against the power and ceremony of british royalty the dreams faded diana still officially living with charles but in an unhappy marriage took note at the palace's treatment of her sister-in-law i think diana was shocked by what happened to sarah and determined that it would not happen to her when she heard you know that famous phrase the knives are out for fergie i think she realized that when you walk out that's liable to happen to anyone who flouts the conventions and and tries to stand up to the windsors and she was determined not to repeat sarah's mistakes diana's strength and character pulled her through the next few months the strains of her own marriage breakdown and the truth of her relationship with charles was about to explode on the british public the book diana her true story went on sale the romantic image of a loving royal couple was shattered charles was exposed as an uncaring husband and adulterer these revelations were the beginning of charles's downfall and threatened the very institution of the british monarchy the royal wives of windsor were to blame some people may say that they were dragging the royal family down others thought that they provided a much needed lightness and a more reality into a very stuffy old institution i mean the if the worst thing you can be accused of is prodding somebody with an umbrella i don't think that's such a bad thing to do there were girls having fun the things they did they didn't expect most of the time to be made public and you know let's face it they weren't robbing banks or shooting people and i think a lot was made out of very very little on the surface it was business as usual the estranged husbands put on a royal face to attend a family wedding when a crisis occurs in a royal marriage the palace machine puts its full weight behind the blood royal now with the gloves off charles had been advised to dump diana immediately and seek a divorce just for one day at least marriage difficulties within the royal family were put to one side as they turned out in force to enjoy a royal wedding which might prove successful sarah had been the one missing guest but at another marriage ceremony her eldest daughter princess beatrice was bridesmaid the queen's granddaughter a new generation of royalty enjoyed the limelight usually taken by her mother diana meanwhile continued with her public engagements alone except for the company of her sons who enjoyed the experience of meeting film stars at opening nights this was the image of new royalty at work single moms teaching their children the ropes public interest in the broken royal marriages remained high photographed alone taking the children to school the press attention turned back to sarah after revelations of her association with the texan oil millionaire steve wyatt public interest now centered around another texan johnny bryan his cover as sarah's financial advisor was blown wide open after photographs appeared of the almost naked couple cavorting on holiday together in the south of france it was a royal exposure without president and the press had a field day sarah's alleged lover johnny bryan failed to get an injunction to stop publication of the very revealing photographs and the media onslaught continued eventually johnny brian and sarah were successful in winning a court battle in france against intrusion of their privacy by a french freelance photographer at the time the photographs appeared in the press sarah was on holiday with her children with the queen at balmoral well i know the duchess was so upset that they had to twice call the doctor the local doctor at balmoral to come and attend to her she was absolutely distraught quite understandably and it was a bombshell for the queen for the entire royal family it was one more devastating blow in a very very bad year sarah insisted that johnny bryan was merely her financial advisor as a house guest of the queen at balmoral the embattled duchess found the situation difficult to explain worst of all of course to to sarah because she was right there in the enemy camp when this news broke and how could she possibly explain it away the the the evidence was all too overwhelming so um i think that that probably was the worst time of her life diana's unhappy marriage meant she was spending more time away from the royals sarah needed the understanding of an outsider so turn to her sister-in-law for support diana was sympathetic and she she was um you know visiting her and trying to support her but i think the duchess was beyond any kind of uh support or sympathy she was just totally devastated by it continuing to protest his innocence johnny bryan became the center of massive public interests and debate no further comment to make in addition to the comments statements i made last night newspapers claim that the photographs were published to strip away the hypocrisy surrounding the couple's relationship the french freelance photographer who took them made half a million pounds from worldwide sales once he knew that fergie was there i don't personally know whether he knew who she was there with or how he found out she was there but as you can imagine there's a chain of command chain of bookings of flights of villas there's the police protection service there are endless ways that information could get out i think the royal families always needed a black sheep for many years it was princess margaret then it was princess anne recently it's been fergie and of course the mirror's publication of those photographs while she happened to be the queen's guest at balmoral and was was banished that very day was the low point of fergie's relationship with the british public really and with royal life and since then she's been an ex-royal the mirror of course made an awful lot of money and put an enormous amount of circulation by printing those photographs so although it was a continuing saga of circulation war among the tabloids it was also an irresistible story which everyone had got hold of it immediately the royal publicity machine went on the defensive prince andrew claimed that the photographs were set up stories were hatched that sarah was suffering from a nervous breakdown even the queen doubted that sarah would ever be able to shoulder official duties again when the story broke sarah andrew and the children were the holiday guests of the queen at balmoral castle the newspaper headlines exploded like a bombshell at the royal breakfast table the duchess of york left balmoral in disgrace [Music] sarah had to face the reality that the royal family no longer considered her a member with her children she boarded a flight for london and virtual exile the official line was that sarah had always intended to leave balmoral at this time normal royal life resumed in scotland as though nothing untoward had happened the royal family including prince andrew attended morning service at the local church it was just like any other sunday with the crowds coming out to watch when sarah arrived at heathrow there was little thought of future plans except perhaps to visit her mother in argentina her main concern was to head for the sanctuary of home as quickly as possible after her traumatic departure from the royal family and the return to her besieged home remender lodge sarah needed help in the hope that somewhere there was somebody she could really trust she turned to therapy i would say now to anybody that um you know if they've been through problems that it's good to just to talk to somebody who you know you can trust and in my particular position you don't know who you're gonna trust at all you're suspicious of everybody because you you trust i trust trusted and do trust still too much and then you get betrayed and let down and then all that all that starts i think that the most important thing if anyone goes through this sort of thing is for the sake of the children and for the sake of your own self is that you you've got a great friendship you're always going to have a great friendship it doesn't need to be animosity and um andrew and i really have a good deep friendship and that's good after sarah's dramatic departure from scotland the royal family continued with their summer holiday for the moment at least peace and tranquility returned to the scottish island the palace announced that no significant developments were expected in the next few days [Music] yet the family holiday was about to be disrupted once more the privacy of the scottish estate was again invaded by the press transcripts appeared in newspapers of a bugged telephone conversation allegedly between the princess of wales endearingly referred to as squidgy and her friend james gilby the recording revealed a princess in turmoil deeply troubled lonely and vulnerable pathetically grateful for the attention of her male confidant during their intimate exchange she discusses her unhappy marriage her remoteness from her in-laws and her tortuous complicated lifestyle makes my life real real torture i decided lonely and without friends in the wild family diana turned to the queen mother for support it's affection it's [Music] despite diana's recorded protestation that she had done so much for the royal family officials dismissed the tapes as inconclusive [Music] the sun newspaper reported that the secret service mi5 was behind the recordings newspaper reports claim that the government's official electronic eavesdropping station was responsible in the interests of national security mi5 monitors royal telephone conversations to gain knowledge about their movements and acquaintances a more sinister view is that charles needed evidence of his wife's infidelity it was in charles's interest and perhaps the palace's interest no one else's that diana's phones be bugged and bugged they were she knew that herself and had complained to the queen's private secretary sir robert fellows that her apartments were bugged and they needed debugging and indeed they were cleaned up what wasn't cleaned up was what was happening on the line from her apartments to the outside world and most experts concur that it was between let us say her phone and the general switchboard that um that a bug was placed what's disturbing is not the diana was bugged necessarily because that was the excuse could have been the national interest but the eventual recording was cleaned up cleaned up with a very sophisticated device called a digital adapter filter this sort of thing would be needed would cost about 35 000 pounds and would normally only be available to the security services or to the military so that was used it was cleaned up and after it was cleaned up it was spliced together there are there are joins in the um audible joins in milliseconds in in the conversation and then it was rebroadcast we broadcast using a mobile telephone to disguise their sources this way the perpetrators ensured that the taped conversation was picked up accidentally by amateur radio hams by contacting the press this telephone evidence confirmed that diana was unhappy in her marriage to charles and needed the support and love of a male companion exposed by the tapes and now handed by the press there is no doubt that james gilby helped diana through her crisis lonely depressed and spied upon diana spent many years waiting to be heard by a man with a sympathetic and understanding ear she was a very lonely vulnerable woman who needed a shoulder to cry on and he provided it i think she needed some sort of buffer between her and the the enemies that that's what she thought of i think the people that surrounded her at that time she needed somebody who was not one of them to turn to to advise her and to as a sort of sounding board and he was the perfect answer somebody she could trust she could confide in and unfortunately their relationship became public diana's critics claimed that the tapes confirmed her tendency towards paranoia [Music] if she does have a tendency i think it's quite justified i think anybody in that position should feel they're surrounded by assassins night and day because once those tapes emerged and she found out about them long before the public did she was worried that she quite rightly that she was being bugged that she was being spied upon and she was so any paranoia she felt i think she was entirely right it troubles diana deeply that her own sons will be the products of a broken home diana had seen her own parents split up when she was a child and knew what grief it could cause on young children she's directed much of her public work to promoting family values her main concern has been the importance of physical contact tactile by nature she's voiced her belief in its benefits particularly for children hugging has no harmful side effects if we all play our part in making our children feel valued the result will be tremendous there are potential huggers in every household always the focus of hugs and kisses herself diana represents a new more acceptable type of royalty no other member of the british world family can make such immediate contact with the public their admiration is genuine and their acts of affection spontaneous this huge popularity will be her main weapon in her fight for a fair settlement with charles as an indication to the way forward as an independent princess with international status diana visited zimbabwe [Music] [Applause] using her high profile to focus media attention onto the hidden problems of one of africa's small countries she uses her public position for the benefit of the world sick and needy from an international charity platform [Applause] [Music] an independent sarah found a role for herself drawing attention to the plight of children the world had forgotten no no you want your mummy back you've got lovely eyes you have you've got lovely eyes [Music] letters to germany and to get german sponsors and the films from poland and um and um how old is it she's exactly the same age as beatrice leading the charity children in crisis sarah is putting her past behind her and with her own brand of enthusiasm although with less exposure she is helping to raise money to support her charitable activities she's still doing a lot of work with these charities and she's still trying to get a profile for them even though it's a lot harder for her now but she's still working for them and i think with diana i'm sure too although it's not obvious at the moment i'm sure she's still doing the same and i think you know the charities sorely miss having that public image with the serious side of charity work comes the glamour of fundraising first night this is where diana's talents as a performer come into their own she plays the part of a fairytale princess with apparent ease her glamorous image has fueled the media's obsession with her [Music] on an official visit to egypt her morning swim was intruded upon by a group of sensation-hungry photographers spying from a high-rise balcony both she and her detective were aware they were being watched but she chose to ignore them resigned yet again to being forced back onto center stage by her relentless audience diana is a victim of her own success with the media branded as the villain of the piece the reason she gave for reducing her public engagements and her prominent royal position when i started my public life 12 years ago i understood the media might be interested in what i did but i was not aware of how overwhelming that attention would become nor the extent to which it would affect both my public duties and my personal life in a manner that's been hard to bear i don't think that any any marriage that is as unhappy as the wales is was can survive the kind of uh of press intrusion that it had absolutely not i think it would just would have been extraordinary if it had survived because once once the press have a little inkling that something's wrong they go for it they really go for it and of course it's it's probably the greatest story that fruits we've ever had in the last 50 years often accused of smothering her children william and harry are incredibly fond of their mother her sons were her main solace during the years of her marriage breakdown now she has to bear the loneliness of her new situation as an officially separated wife diana has replaced the queen as the nation's primary mother figure by announcing the importance her sons will have on her future life my first priority will continue to be our children william and harry who deserve as much love and care and attention as i am able to give as well as an appreciation of the tradition into which they were born she's very anxious to avoid any publicity which is which is perhaps understandable but the way she's going about it is perhaps not the wisest way so she's the first victim the charities naturally are the second victim the royal family's also suffering because she was a great asset and wherever she went she appealed greatly to the public and she was the um the very modern young face of the royal family which was very very useful a great asset to them all round a year after her official separation from charles diana joined the royal family for the christmas day service at sandringham church and again took center stage shortly afterwards however she left abruptly to spend the rest of christmas alone until now the magnetism of royalty has helped to make royal engagements a powerful medium for promoting its causes it remains to be seen whether diana's future detachment from the royal family will affect its pulling power diana leaves an unfillable gap in the royal lineup sadly there's no longer a real role for her in the royal family whatever small role she still has she'll be seen as just the mother of the next king but one prince william she may not even have the title princess of wales anymore it's very doubtful they may invent some new title for her like duchess of kensington for instance to um give her a title that's that that tells the public that she is no longer the wife of the ear to the throne and no longer princess of wales are no longer the third lady in the land since her marriage to charles diana has received little guidance from within the palace she has had to find her own way in an attempt to escape from an unhappy marriage she exposed a side of royalty which has done immeasurable damage to the institution of the monarchy diana stands accused of being disloyal to her husband and to the queen they certainly backfired on her and on the family and i don't think she appreciated just what the public reaction to those revelations would be or that it would quickly become apparent that she was behind all the leaks the experiment to bringing commoners into the house of windsor has failed and world he can no longer set an example of happy family life the two young wives have gone and all that is left is the shell of respectability and tradition neither had set out to challenge time-honored customs but their effect on the whole image of the british monarchy has been dramatic together they've opened up a new line of questioning on an institution that must move with the times if it is to survive into the 21st century as mothers to the queen's grandchildren they still have an important role to play in the lives of the next royal generation diana's ancestral home is also up in northamptonshire she's a daughter of one of britain's oldest and nobless families diana's father was an equity to king george vi before inheriting the title earl spencer the family lived on the royal estate at sandringham where diana was brought up with her two sisters and younger brother charles [Music] when she was only seven her parents separated and after an acrimonious divorce diana was left in the care of her father diana was a very young child her older sisters were away at boarding school charles was still in the nursery because he was younger still and she very much became her father's great companion and indeed hostess i mean when he gave shooting parties she used to help him organize the shooting lunches and so on and really helped him run the house and run the family and was extremely close to her father and he absolutely adored her when diana was 17 her father remarried creating considerable problems for his youngest daughter when he married rayne spencer i think she felt a great sense of isolation and loneliness in that she never got on with her stepmother indeed all the children resented the fact that they hadn't been allowed to see his father their father when he was desperately ill with a stroke and a friend who was at lord spencer's wedding to reign recalls driving away seeing diana standing completely alone looking very miserable leaning against a saddle stone she'd lost her mother now she'd lost her father the traumas of home life were compensated for at boarding school not particularly academic diana later recalled her time spent away from home my years at west heath were certainly very happy once indeed i made many friends who i often see and in spite of what miss raj and my other teachers may have thought at the time i did actually learn something but you would never have known by my o level results for the young diana marriage and babies were an aristocratic girl's career after west heath her future took a predictable turn working as an unqualified nursery school teacher i wanted to teach children they said why not come along so i first started often afternoons and then i took over the mornings and did whole days but i only worked three days a week kindergarten and the other two i looked after american baby boy in november 1980 diana's name was linked to prince charles the press soon picked up the scent her caution in front of the cameras was a skill she swiftly acquired when quizzed about her relationship with charles but uh there wasn't and he told reporters yesterday that it may be coming soon would you any comment to make about that now an official announcement soon followed and tv cameras were allowed momentarily to lift the veil of secrecy you take us back to when you first met yes certainly it was 1977 the charles came to stay his friend of my sister's house for shoot i'm sort of messing up plowed phil well i remember thinking what a very jolly and amusing and attractive 16 year old she was and i mean great fun and bouncy and full of life and everything and um i don't know what you thought of me pretty amazing nobody worried about the 13-year age difference so openly in love the couple brought joy to a nation undergoing hard times shy die was launched on the world her first public appearance caused a few raised eyebrows at a reception in london's goldsmith's hall she went to the emanuals and chose a very daring dress which was very low-cut strapless rather a ball gown than an ordinary dress suitable for her for a concert she was a very voluptuous girl in those days this was long before the bulimia set in and of course when prince charles stepped out of his car with diana behind him he looked at the photographers and said you won't believe what's coming next and they were all thrilled when they saw her because she made sensational pictures and of course she had to bend very low to get out of the car and i know that there was a lot of questions asked in newsrooms and television studios later that evening about whether the pictures were fit for broadcast because the dress was so low-cut that a lot of people thought that we were going to see a bit too much of the next princess of wales it was a very very glamorous eyeful of a gorgeous girl wedding worries were beginning to tell at a polo match diana left the field in tears later revelations claimed that diana was having serious doubts about the marriage her unhappiness was caused by charles's continuing friendship with an old girlfriend camilla parker-bowles charles was in love with camilla years before he met diana that love then turned into a deep and close friendship he didn't give up that friendship it was at camilla's house that he did most of his courting of diana camilla was very much involved in his relationship with diana in the early days so there's no doubt that that certainly he was seeing her during that period after the engagement announcement charles left on an official five-week tour of australia reports later suggested that he'd been with camilla prior to his departure reducing diana to tears when she saw him off at the airport well you see there was a great problem at the time because the prince of wales had had various girlfriends who however nice they were were deemed to be rather unsuitable and they'd had previous boyfriends and so on and to my mind the two grannies got together lady for moy and the queen mother who dated on charles and they thought here is the most wonderful sweet girl who comes from the right sort of background and she would be ideal i think the trouble was that they rarely had absolutely nothing in common and he having been the prince of wales the dominant party and all the rest of it found himself caught up with and then gradually overtaken by this complete superstar the wedding was the biggest media event the world had ever seen unbeknown diana's anxiety extended to her father's state of health i think it was a terrible ordeal for donna and i think it was a terrible ordeal for lord spencer as well but he had a very very bad stroke from which it was thought he wouldn't recover she virtually had to carry him up the aisle and to add to all her problems this magnificent wedding dress designed by the emanuels it got fantastically crushed in the carriage which was a problem that nobody had anticipated and i mean everybody was rushing around in panic because this dress was completely crumpled like a piece of tissue paper it looked as if it had never been armed and that must have been really well horrid for her in a way on on this very very special day with all these other pressures but i think she overcame it diana made a radiant and confident figure in her stunning wedding gown she endeared herself to the world when she muddled her husband's names as she took her vows i diana francis hi diana francis take the charles philip arthur george take the bennett charles baltha george to my wedded husband to my wedded husband to haven't a home to heaven from this day forward this day forward for better in sickness and in health in sickness and in health to love and to cherish love and to cherish until death has departed [Music] diana and charles left for their honeymoon britain spent the day celebrating [Music] [Applause] [Music] first stop gibraltar in a plane with prince charles at the controls on route for a trip around the mediterranean aboard the royal yacht britannia but the strain of the past few months had taken a toll on diana the run-up to the wedding had been a traumatic experience for the new princess of wales observers noticed how thin and tired she looked when she arrived at the airport at gibraltar she looked she was so sort of pale and and she was so thin she looked so fragile and nervous she was like a bag of nerves you know as if the whole of the last few days it really she was really worn down with it and all the time she was searching around following charles in his footsteps and she was wasn't at all confident about it [Applause] [Music] to be alone as ever they would be that was the plan but charles's association with camilla extended to the honeymoon later reports suggested that he telephoned her from the royal yacht [Music] future trouble was still a long way off as the couple returned to balmoral with loving smiles and shining eyes the fairy tale continued and as they walked down through the heather they were hand in hand they were giggling and and they were very there was a lot of body language amongst the two of them and he kept kissing her hand and she kept going all pink and giggly and and it was really very natural it wasn't at all stage at that stage it was a very spontaneous natural sort of thing between the two of them it was a very pretty scene as they came down and then they disappeared off into the not the sunset but the head hand in hand and it was a romantic shot as they disappeared the romantic scenes from balmoral soon gave way to concern about diana's health behind the smiles there were other muttered concerns diana was very unstable emotionally as we now know in hindsight when she married prince charles and i think prince charles really really wanted to play professor hickens and he really wanted to help her i mean on their honeymoon she was deeply distraught very unhappy so much so he actually got a psychiatrist to go up to balmoral this is this is it you know like four weeks into their honeymoon and that's not the action of someone that doesn't care it's someone that's desperately thinking you know i've got to help this girl members of her mother's family have told me that her own mother was a very very highly strong woman indeed somebody once described her as a hysteric now diana is certainly not that she's got the hard-headedness of the spencers but she's undoubtedly extremely nervy and the sort of pressures that were put upon her and although prince charles did his best to support her he wasn't the sort of cuddly daddy that she missed and i think she missed that sort of reassurance and therefore i think that she was unhappy and lonely and depressed and she was terribly isolated in her ivory tar [Music] [Applause] diana's problems were temporarily overcome with the euphoria of motherhood within a year of marriage prince william was born [Music] [Applause] when a month-long official foreign tour was planned diana insisted that the baby william accompany them to australia and new zealand public interest in the young couple was intense does prince william have a favorite toy um jamie he loves his koala bear he's got but he hasn't got anything particular he just likes something with a bit plastic whale of throws things out um you've got a plastic whale that throws things out the top little balls thank you jamie i hope that answers your question charles was pleased to show off his dancing prowess before his australian hosts [Music] uh [Music] [Music] exhausted by the royal itinerary in the relentless heat diana and charles were mobbed by crowds wherever they appeared there were crowds everywhere who wanted to shake hands with her and in one city brisbane in queensland the crowds closed in on her they were almost a million people turned out to see her and it was just so frightening she had to retire to the town hall and have a glass of water and and she was at a state of collapse i think it was very hot too many people were crowding into a very small street and the police were afraid that there'd be a major incident it must have been a terrifying experience for somebody who was so unused to such things i mean it was quite frightening enough for the rest of us who'd done it many times before [Music] diana claimed that her first foreign trip had been a baptism of fire [Music] the visit had been a remarkable success charles was proud of his new wife ladies and gentlemen the last time i was here was two years ago uh in 1981 shortly before uh we were married and at that time everybody was saying good luck and i hope everything goes well and how lucky you are to be engaged to such a lovely lady and my goodness i was lucky enough to marry her and we had many many masteries it's amazing what ladies do when you're backstage i do think he was very proud of her in the early days and i think that really noticed in australia in 83 i mean the way he he sort of put his arm around her and pushed her forward to meet people and he did look very proud of her and he used to look used to catch a glimpse now and again when they were say sitting on a podium and he would turn and look at her and there would be just a little sort of exchange between the two and and i think he was very proud of her but things began to turn sour on an official visit to canada later in the year diana was quoted as saying one minute i was a nobody the next minute i was the princess of wales mother media toy member of this family it was just too much for one person to handle charles seemed incapable of comprehending the turmoil in diana's life she was suffering from the eating disorder bulimia nervosa and existing on chocolate bars to keep her going i think everybody noticed that she was belson like i mean she was she was pathetically thin and i mean i was always quite close to the royal party at state banquets and so on and you just see her pushing her food around her plate i mean i never ever saw her eat anything and at that time we thought that she was just trying very hard to sort of please her hosts that it was nerves really that was preventing her from eating properly but i mean everybody was aware that she was far too thin there were anxieties about her at one point diana fainted and had to be helped away [Music] charles is reported to have been unsympathetic and after recovering her composure they left quickly some of the people very close to her then told me later that they thought that she staged that faint because she was extremely hot tired and very bored with staggering around one boring exhibition after another with her husband and as a way of escape she she just collapsed very neatly out of the view of the television and the still cameraman so it was a very well timed collapse back on form diana gave the canadian people an amusing glimpse of royal life on a collision course with charles six months pregnant with her second child diana seemed the perfect example of wyford and motherhood hardly a hint of personal unhappiness [Music] later reports claimed that charles was dismissive about the birth of prince harry disappointed that their second child wasn't a girl and looking too much like a spencer with a lot of red hair pictures of them together captured the fulfillment of married love there were signs though that charles was once again seeing camilla parker bowles late-night telephone calls unexplained absences ironically their marriage appeared otherwise to be happy [Music] on holiday in spain with king juan carlos and his family diana and charles appeared relaxed away from the spotlight and the pressures of royal duty [Music] this was diana's kind of holiday and she much admired the king of spain's attitude towards his royal duties juan carlos is quite informal really compared to our monarchy when he buzzes around on a motorbike and journalists have drinks with him in bars and he sort of buys them a beer it's it's very different and i think uh diana liked this i mean charles may have found that informality a little difficult to deal with but but it was it was quite relaxing for diana and the boys to be in that kind of atmosphere diana's greatest test was the royal couple's first visit to the united states public interest was massive and the trip included being guests of honor at a glittering white house ball for washington it was the social event of the decade the cream of american arts and public life turned out to meet diana who is welcomed by president reagan your royal highnesses sir oliver and lady wright and ambassador and mrs price ladies and gentlemen nancy and i are deeply honored to welcome the prince and princess of wales to the white house permit me to add our congratulations the president was so taken with diana's presence that he almost forgot her name and expressed also our great happiness that we have been able to have this affair with princess david princess diane here on her first trip to the united states that we should be able to share in that first trip later diana danced with john travolta leaving her husband to explain what the experience had been like well i'm not a glove puppet so i can't answer for that i'm afraid but i think i hope you enjoyed it didn't you be needed if she didn't enjoy dancing with john travolta wouldn't she and why were the press so fascinated by their every move it's not gonna do with me it's my wife here during a visit to the treasure houses of britain exhibition charles's disapproving tone went unnoticed by their american hosts although they did notice that diana seemed distracted and unwell she was exhausted she hadn't eaten and was distressed by her husband's uncaring attitude towards her bulimia nervosa i'm not sure that many people really understand bulimia and i think that it is particularly difficult for the people who have to live with with those people who suffer from it i think charles found it a very difficult thing i mean her moods were up and down one minute she was pleased with life and and optimistic and happy and the next minute hurling things about the place the problem is that if you live with somebody who day after day is like this who's constantly eating and then disappearing to the loo to chuck up i just know that it was that it must be very difficult to be understanding and patient and reassuring and always there with the with the compassion that is needed day after day after day i'm told by psychiatrists that it's very difficult for husbands to understand when a woman's bulimic because they're simply repulsed by it the smell the the mess it's it's frightful nobody can understand why somebody would wish to do this to themselves and so he was very turned off by it he was physically turned off by it and i think that was the main reason why they stopped sleeping together bulimia has its roots in an unhappy childhood self-doubt and uncertainty in adolescence years later diana was able to speak on behalf of fellow bulimia sufferers the illness they developed became their shameful friend by focusing their energies on controlling their bodies they had found a refuge from having to face the more painful issues at the center of their lives a way of coping albeit destructively and pointlessly but a way of coping with a situation they were finding unbearable [Music] in 1986 dai mania took japan by the throat when the royal couple visited the country in may its teeming population had watched the royal wedding on television and was now in the grip of a quite extraordinary enthusiasm [Music] but the japanese were blissfully unaware of diana's difficulties i think to the japanese she looked like the sort of european goddess of folklore because she was beautifully tall beautifully blonde beautifully dressed she was their absolute ideal european beauty and the way she behaved and her gentleness and so on i think would also have appealed to them a great deal and she was an absolute wow you know the inscrutable oriental cracked and they absolutely adored her and i remember going to buddhist temples with her and the monks were all sort of falling over themselves taking photographs i mean anything less dignified you know chattering away there was meant to be vows of silence but even they couldn't resist saying she's gorgeous [Music] diana brought a movie star glamour to the role of princess of wales using clothes to express her personality and boost her self-confidence diana enjoyed dressing for the part she did two things in japan one she wore a dress a red a white silk dress with big red circles and it looked just like the rising sun on the japanese flag and then the second thing she did later in the week is she wore a dress designed by a japanese designer and up until that time we'd only seen her in british design clothes so it was her way of complimenting them [Music] there's no doubt that diana put british fashion on the map i mean certainly the designers who dressed her belleville sassoon victor edelstein katherine walker they were really made by her patronage and people all around the world started buying their clothes and of course the emanuels who designed her wedding dress were instantly transformed into sensational designers between them on joint tours around the world they created a climate of goodwill towards britain whose brighter and better future they seem to represent [Music] diana was role model a heroine in venice and elsewhere she was a superstar who became the most powerful image in a popular world culture [Music] like every other celebrity she fed and lived on her public's emotions she wore their affection like a suit of armor she used it to defend herself against charles's uncaring attitude towards her and to win the hearts of her adoring public he was reduced to a second-class royal citizen that was the adulation i mean it was clear to see that nobody was remotely interested in him you know i mean he was just the bouquet carrier you know they'd walk down on a walkabout and you know they'd all sort of look over his shoulder while he was trying to talk to them to try and see if she was going to cross over and come down their side you know they'd they didn't want him at all you know and he'd say hello how are you and they'd say could you give this book hate diana please you know poor man i mean it was very humiliating for him you know and there were great boos when he came over to their side of the street because they wanted donna but she couldn't split herself in two indeed she made this comment you know she said she was sorry to disappoint but she couldn't be both sides of the road at the same time it was a magic but dangerous quality that set diana apart from most other royal performers but she was different from them in another way her vulnerability made her easy for the emotionally wounded to identify with a quality which charles didn't possess diana was aware how much her husband resented her popularity and that the fact that she upstaged him and so she was doing her best to prevent the problem but in the end she saw that it was useless and she just gave up [Music] public adoration was actually the thing that kept diana going she lived for it it was like a drug for her she she was overwhelmed by it when she first came to came to it when she she first became engaged to charles she initially found it very difficult to cope with but once she'd got on top of it she actually found that it was it was tremendous her marriage made her a beauty and a star maybe it was because she was so young and naive that she took part in the fairy tale wedding that everybody hoped and believed would be a success [Music] [Applause] a framed picture of the prince hung in her dormitory at school her destiny was to marry prince charles but not to stay in the victorian era her proud father earl spencer recalled that one of her great strengths had been to cope with her public exposure she's very good natured and it doesn't worry her publicity doesn't worry her as you've seen from her way she's dealt with the press she's taking it all in her stride i think she'd always be like that she's very practical down a very down to earth very practical very good housewife and incidentally when she was a baby she was a superb physical specimen she'd won any baby price that was going what the spencer family as i've said were one of the oldest families in britain they were all very distinguished they all rose to the very top while a lot of people were speculating was lady diana spencer a suitable match for the prince of wales he advanced the thought was he a suitable match for her given that you know the windsor family haven't been in this country quite as long as the spencer's [Applause] long summer holidays in scotland showed the royal family in a new light diana became more guarded and less confident in her dealings with them [Music] in public the couple put on a happy face as rumors about their private life grew gloomier images of happier more promising days will live on in the nation's family album [Music] on the darker side she had very little in common with the royal family i think before princess of wales had a very difficult time in that the duke of edinburgh and the princess royal don't tolerate people they consider fools and they are very sort of hard-headed and down-to-earth and so on and i think they considered her a little bit of a lightweight a little bit of a feather head the queen i think was absolutely thrilled with her because i think she fulfilled exactly what she wanted in that she was a nice girl the public loved her and she'd produced two sans snails for the prince of wales and i'm sure the queen felt that you know she would make him happy charles preferred the solitude of the scottish countryside and painting she's a very urban creature although she was brought up in the country she loves society loves pavements and shops and and restaurants and being on the end of a telephone or meeting her friends so their life really was a million miles away from hers diana and charles were spending more and more time apart as an unhappy royal wife of an unhappy royal husband it was their decision to separate their lives and appear together only in public and on family occasions the press got wind of their estrangement and in 1987 published stories questioning the myth that the wales marriage was a happy one but the fabrication didn't stop there palace officials reassured the newspapers and the world that the stories were untrue the family home at highgrove in gloucestershire was not surrounded by press men nor was the nearby home of charles's close friend camilla parker-bowles to whom charles fled when the pressure got too great i think if you've got a very unhappy relationship you always find somebody else's shoulder to cry on it it could be somebody of the same sex there was probably no one to talk to so he's going to lean on the shoulder of a friend and that friend happened to be a woman and and i think probably camilla probably saved charles's sanity i think we should be grateful to her it all began to go wrong after the birth of prince harry perhaps she was like any young wife she'd had a young family very quickly they hadn't had time to get to know each other after their wedding before she became pregnant it was it was too much diana was exposed to too much stress in too short a time it was too much to cope with being transformed from a nobody into a worldwide sensation overnight and she got engaged married pregnant all within nine months it was just too much for any woman there seemed no way out for diana sucked into the myth and magic of the monarchy the lie had to be maintained although the marriage was a sham it must not appear that way to the outside world [Music] diana spent holidays alone with her children and her mother and sisters and attended her son's school sports day she extended her public role she supported the family unit and spoke on the subject of family values at a controversial conference in brighton i doubt whether there is any standard formula for a successful family the family is after all the most human and hence the most imperfect of institutions instead i could only point to those mothers fathers and children in lonely isolation or in comfortable conformity who simply do their best with what they have charles broke his arm playing polo and diana appeared publicly by his side when he left hospital how are you sir but as soon as the press was out of sight they parted and charles returned to his home at highgrove and close to camilla his surrogate mother well a lot of a lot of people that know charles quite well say that camilla played that role she played the role of sort of mother nanny prince charles had a nanny every moment of the day who loved him very very much and some research proves that as long as you have one adult figure that is always there and loves you very much it doesn't really matter if it's your mother your father or a nanny [Music] on an official visit to the taj mahal in india diana sat alone in front of the temple dedicated to eternal love charles came here before his marriage to diana and sat in the same spot he then vowed to return with his wife [Music] in egypt diana was again alone while charles was on a private trip to turkey [Music] [Music] diana the royal ambassador at large was flying the flag for britain in pakistan she reached a new level of self-confidence she was beautiful now with the best will in the world the royal family are not beautiful she was distinctly beautiful she also brought great style the royal family have never been renowned for being the best dressed women in britain have they they have other priorities so she brought the glamour to the royal family that they'd lacked for a very long time the queen always commanded affection but she was never perceived as gorgeous and that's what diana brought she brought the glamour the mystery of majesty that elusive thing she was the fairy tale princess in april 1992 diana's beloved father died unexpectedly a grieving princess of wales with other members of her family were joined by charles in an emotional funeral service a simple bouquet of lilies and sweet peas summed up diana's grief over the loss of her beloved father within months andrew morton's book appeared the whole sham of the royal marriage was out in the open [Music] the press had a field day as the revelations confirmed diana's bulimia and her unhappy marriage to charles camilla was exposed as charles's mistress of many years and diana's own friend james gilby and many others were credited as having spilled the beans to andrew morton on top of this bugged telephone conversations were leaked to the press the strain was too much for diana [Music] you reflect so very sincerely philosophy of tender loving care which is and always will be the hallmark of this hospice at a hospice in liverpool the chairman's words reduced her to tears [Music] her nerves were stretched to breaking point when she went up to liverpool i mean she remember she she was bulimic and it all does i mean her marriage had broken up the andrew morton book had come out everyone knew every detail of her private life she was completely stressed out i mean i think we were very lucky that she didn't end up in a in a hospital quite honestly and i think of course when someone shows you a little bit of kindness and you're at breaking point it's very very normal to break down into tears recovering her composure diana appeared with charles at the royal garter ceremony the public revelations about her marriage had left their mark and diana was suspected in royal circles of cooperating with andrew morton as an act of desperation i think diana felt there was no other way no other way to tell the world about her tragic personal life she felt that only public exposure could end her private ordeal and she was right because it certainly achieved that aim but perhaps the way she did it wasn't the wisest way it was certainly damaging to her children and it certainly made the royal family regard her as a traitor in their midst and from that day on i think her fate was sealed before the revelations plans had been made for charles and anna to make an official visit to korea diana agreed with the queen to accompany her estranged husband the press hailed it as an opportunity for them to show some reconciliation in the event the body language said it all there was a hideous moment when we walked into the prime minister's uh residence and the prime minister made a wonderful speech saying you are a beautiful couple and we are all delighted to welcome you well it was just so obvious that those words were exactly the wrong thing to say it was a classic textbook case of a warring couple they didn't speak to each other once in our presence they didn't even look at each other if they could avoid it i mean i can't remember seeing them look at each other back in london diana and charles attended the royal variety performance together [Music] this was the last time they were seen in public before prime minister john major made an announcement to the house of commons it is announced from buckingham palace that with regret the prince and princess of wales have decided to separate their royal highnesses have no plans to divorce and their constitutional positions are unaffected this decision has been reached admittably and they will both to continue to participate fully in the upbringing of their children the strain of being thought to be living happily in a glorious land of tiaras and titles and happy endings was in fact too much to bear for diana she had fought for an independent life as a career princess and exposed the fairy tale as fiction i think had the two of them paid more attention to each other and taken more care of each other and the situation i think diana could have been a good wife for him what i think happened and where it went so wrong was because she was so young her head was turned by the stardom and she had great difficulty in coping with that he meanwhile had great difficulty in coping with a nose that was put very badly out of joint by by having the limelight stolen from him using the limelight diana made a speech about eating disorders i'm supposed to have my head down the loo for most of the day it was clear that she had completely recovered from her bulimia free at last from her shameful friend i'm supposed to be dragged off in a minute with men in white coats so so if it's all right with you i thought i might postpone my nervous breakdown to a more appropriate moment he was turned off physically by diana but he was also tired of somebody who made so many demands on him he was a very selfish man who led a a life that he where he did exactly as he pleased when a wife and children came along he wasn't willing to make the sacrifices give them the attention that they deserved and that wrangled with diana and she was constantly reminding him of that it is a remarkable feat for a young woman to graduate from unqualified nursery teacher into a unique player on the world stage [Music] she believed her husband had rejected her love refusing to suffer in silence she broke with royal tradition and fought back she tried but failed to modernize the monarchy she brought a magic that they lacked there was no young glamorous woman in their ranks when diana came along they desperately needed her and they didn't know it at the time the world took to her immediately with her freshness her naivety her wonderful figure long lovely legs blonde good looks blue eyes and a willingness to to to enjoy all that part of the role in fact we wanted her so much that we we willed charles to marry her and um the rest as they say is history he went along with it we all thought she was so perfect the the i think the the the stories at the time that we wrote said that she had all the qualities for a queen and she did she was just ideal for the role but she wasn't ideal for charles and that was the tragedy [Music] her marriage made her a beauty and a heroine in a revolutionary move she changed from victim to star her official engagements are now rare when she does appear in public her elegance and sense of style is still spectacular drawing the spotlight away from charles this is her way of hitting back at her husband the man who betrayed her a poisonous war still rages between them her suspicions linger on that charles has escaped from the marriage morally unscathed despite his admission of adultery anyone would be mad to say that charles wasn't pleased to be to be out of what was a very very unhappy relationship for both of them and i think saying he's pleased to be shot of his probably rather a cruel way of putting it i think he is delighted that the sham of his marriage has finally come to an end as as as is she diana is buoyed up by public sympathy but there is hostility towards her from charles's friends and family when the queen invited camilla to polo at windsor great park royal unity was maintained despite all fingers pointing at camilla as the other woman in charles's life retiring to lick his wounds is not in character for the prince of wales it's not in his nature to hide from the spotlight charles has never known life without it for a man under pressure polo is a vital outlet for his frustration everything has always revolved around charles with every practical need taken care of his path continuously smoothed as the young man finding the right woman was a major preoccupation when you marry in my position you're going to marry somebody who perhaps one day is going to become queen and you've got to choose somebody very carefully i think who could fulfill this particular role because people like you perhaps would expect quite a lot from somebody like that and it's got to be somebody pretty special [Music] the fairy tale princess miraculously appeared the wedding was watched by 700 million people worldwide [Music] [Applause] [Music] the young princess captured people's hearts for her youthful manner and fine good looks she appeared to be tailor-made for the job the romance had started when she was just 17 they'd met in a plowed field and charles was immediately taken by diana's shy bashful good looks he dithered for years over his choice of bride and had even courted camilla parker bowles in her youth being a catholic ruled her out of the running so the arrival of the innocent and unblemished diana seem like a gift from heaven at their engagement interview diana was in no doubt that she was marrying for love while charles doubted the true meaning of the word and i suppose in love of course whatever in love means diana was in love with charles and in love with the idea of charles but in a very immature way i mean of course how could she be anything else immature she was 19 years old the 13-year age gap was thought not to be important it was probably his sense of duty after all his motto is i serve and he he felt that he should get married he felt that he'd been romancing this innocent young girl and that and that really the pressure was on and also everybody wanted him to get married and i think they all got swept away in the euphoria of it after their wedding charles brought his new wife to meet the welsh people the weather was appalling but the reception was warm thousands of people fill the streets for a chance to see their first princess of wales for more than 70 years it was three days of continuous walkabouts functions and speeches a traumatic experience for the young diana it was freezing cold it was pouring with rain the princess of wales was pregnant and not feeling at all well but being very brave about it in fact she was being sick every five seconds and everybody was finding the nearest lou and we got off the royal train and i was right behind her and she was so frightened she was vibrating like a tuning fork i mean you could see the absolute terror of it but she was true spencer grip was coming to the fore and we walked down this long grim station platform and beyond we could see these huge huge crowds and it was as if she took a deep breath and plunged into icy water she just ran forward and thrust her hands into the crowd and they were absolutely overwhelmed and next up an hour later she was a changed girl she'd broken the ice she'd done it she'd felt the warmth of the crowd for the first time determined to make a memorable impact on the people of wales a hesitant and nervous 21 year old princess impressed them by making her first ever public speech i am extremely grateful to you lord mayor and the city council and the city of cardiff for granting me the freedom of the city i realize it is a very great honour and i am most grateful [Applause] images after the birth of prince william radiated happiness and true love perhaps when they first got married they had a few problems as a lot of people do but i think when she had william that they did have a period when they were very very happy and i'm sure he was in love with her and i think i remember talking to him at the time and he prefaced everything with my wife he didn't want to talk about anything except diana and he obviously doted on her and the child [Music] at her former flatmate's wedding diana appeared with her new husband charles to begin with diana had considerable influence over her husband she softened him up and introduced him to her circle of friends all in an attempt to make him feel relaxed in the company of people more of her own age i think diana did try and to a degree succeeded in bringing charles up to date a bit i mean she certainly seemed to change his style of clothes and she had some impact i think i seem to remember on his hair style but not much i mean he's he's basically a very very conservative man he was born aged 45. so i think she she had an uphill struggle old habits die hard charles found it difficult to shake over years of royal upbringing prince charles basically was brought up by nannies and by the queen mother and it is interesting that the two role models that he's had have been the queen mother and his own mother the queen the queen mother is both a symbol before she's a mother so he's a very i think a jungian psychologist would have a field day looking at this man who can only fulfill himself as an individual when his mother dies charles's relationship with his mother the queen had never been a natural one ever since he was a baby her royal duties had kept them apart charles a sensitive and timid child was dispatched to gordenstein a rough and rugged boarding school in scotland where his father had been as a boy the tough surroundings cold showers and early morning dips were part of the daily routine there were doubts that this was the right kind of school for the sensitive charles he'd in my view already been a victim once you know as a victim of his childhood and a victim of the fact that his parents had not really been available to him a great deal of the time and so by sending him to a school where he was expected almost to fend for himself with a very very strong powerful headmaster in many ways rather like his father would i i would have thought was not the right thing for him charles could never be called a wimp in his teens he chose to take up polo determined to prove his strength fitness and courage in this robust and dangerous sport royal family tradition is steeped in horsemanship charles's increasing obsession with polo revealed a deep need to impress his father he has tried in many in some ways i suppose to emulate his father um his father is a very masculine man he swims he rides plays polo and of course i think the fact that prince charles took up this sport of polo was in some way trying to emulate his father and trying to make his father like him and admiring and respect him and the only time that i've ever heard of prince charles ever really standing up to his father was at buckingham palace many many years ago when charles was about 21 or 22 and they were having a row and all of a sudden uh this was telling me by a former private secretary to the queen they heard prince charles say to prince philip just remember who you're speaking to you're speaking to a future king of england when charles was 18 the queen presented her son to the people of wales at carnarvon castle [Music] from an early age charles was prepared for his royal duties i think charles was enormously handicapped by his upbringing he didn't have the sort of tactile relationship with his parents that most children have therefore he didn't really know how to behave towards other people he didn't see his parents have a very tactile relationship it was all hugely formal and and awkward and there were a lot of long absences so he he really had no role model charles found a sympathetic ear in his great uncle lord louis mountbatten this charismatic older figure once the last viceroy of india decided to step in and nurture this hesitant adolescent and groom him in statesmanship it was a very special relationship mountbatten was the sort of a vuncular figure who was a figure fund on many occasions but they took his advice about things to do with royal relationships in 1979 lord matt batten was suddenly and tragically murdered by an ira bomb while on holiday in ireland charles had lent heavily on him for advice had he lived he would have undoubtedly helped him to sort out his relationship with diana had manhattan been alive now in full control of his faculties we would have seen a very different development from what we have seen i think that mountbatten probably would have tried desperately hard to charm diana and he could do it he could charm the birds off the tree he really could he would have he would have used some form of emotional blackmail to get her on his side and explain to her that duty was all important never mind about the unhappiness in your private life your public duty is all important and i believe that they probably would have stayed together if lord mountbatten had been alive now in the beginning charles and diana's relationship appeared perfectly harmonious diana settled into the routine of royal duties accompanying her husband on foreign visits stunning people with her beauty the public's perception was one of a happy young woman who had adapted to the pressure of royal life with extraordinary ease and grace [Music] during an official visit to italy the veneer that barely covered their troubles was slowly beginning to crack diana was suffering from the eating disorder bulimia nervosa despite her elegant charm her loss of weight and sudden change of moods was causing concern amongst her friends now could you translate outwardly diana appeared in control but beneath her glamorous facade was a woman in turmoil just how kind and wonderful the italians have been to us they've made us feel so much at home and it's most beautiful place she confided in her friends that in her husband's presence he made her feel intellectually insecure and inferior english people have been there for years and years but we do know from what members of their staff have revealed that diana could be very very difficult to live with and in fact when she was suffering from bulimia one of the symptoms of that disease is is the wild irrational behavior she would scream and rant and rave and throw things around and of course prince charles was not equipped to cope with this he'd never been brought up where people showed their emotions in public in this way here in one of the most romantic cities in the world charles's preoccupations were far too low-key for someone of diana's generation she wasn't immune from the beauty of venice but their basic divergence of interest was becoming more noticeable charles recorded his impressions of venice from the royal yacht britannia by nature more serious minded charles is a deep thinker it was the start of a great love affair with italy its beauty and antiquity appealed to his fascination with history and his passion for painting he later chose italy to host the first exclusive public exhibition of his own watercolours at raphael's house in urbino craving attention from her husband diana attracted love and affection from her adoring public her husband's status gave her the platform upon which she could flourish [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] diana has always taken exceptional care over her appearance and goes to great lengths to stand out above her husband well initially he seemed quite pleased when people wanted his wife and everybody adored her but then very quickly he began to grow tired of this i noticed it in australia early on whenever they'd walk down the street together there'd be crowds either side of the street he'd go down one side she'd go down another and when on his side of the street all the public would say we won't die and paul prince charles would end up saying i'm sorry there's only me at one point in england when he went to a silverstone racetrack a little boy came up to him and said where's diana and the prince by that stage he got very cross about it all and said i'm sorry she's not here there's only me so why don't you go and ask for your money back charles's action man image was dented by diana's public adoration he was accustomed to having all eyes on him as the bachelor an early morning swim in australia helped boost the image of a man under pressure to succeed with the opposite sex [Music] his celebrity status made him the most exposed royal ambassador at large his girlfriends were hounded by the press they became the center of wild speculation and rumor [Music] instead he settled for a shy young english aristocrat desperately in need of love and attention and leaving behind him his polo loving friend camilla who by this stage was married to andrew parker-bowles outwardly the marriage seemed a happy one [Music] but the cloud of camilla remained reports claim though that their marriage breakdown goes back to the birth of harry i don't think harry's birth per se was a cause of of the beginning of the end but i do think that it was around that period um and i think it was largely to do with with charles's onset of of the real sort of mid-life crisis he felt that his contemporaries were all reaching the pinnacle of their careers or they were certainly well on the way to it and here he was still not fulfilling any well-defined role um still sort of king in waiting which he could see stretching on for another 20 or 30 years [Music] as guests of the spanish royal family diana and charles enjoyed relaxed summer holidays in majorca scenes like these full of loving care and tenderness were a far cry from charles's own world childhood and summer holidays spent in the highlands of scotland in an atmosphere which sets him apart from his children he's closer to them to them than his own father was to him and closer than his own father was to his father he tries to be a good father he's genuinely affectionate towards both his sons but in in the terms of what you and i might understand a good father to be it's impossible for him to to be so because he cannot devote enough time to them they really have to make an appointment to see him just like anybody else [Music] highgrove is charles's home until their separation diana lived here at the weekends this was her husband's territory a 700-acre retreat in gloucestershire here in peace and quiet charles can indulge in his passion for gardening niagara is particularly important for charles because it's his own home it's his first home where he can do what he likes in and i think that some of the things that he does in this home somehow compensate him for what he was not able to have while he was growing up he is very very keen on gardening and one can imagine that the seeds that he plants in the soil and the the flowers and the plants that grow out of the soil are in a way children for him that they're they're growing he nurtures them he can mother them in a way as he would have liked to be mother by his own parents his love of nature and genuine concern for the environment has given rise to claims that charles is too preoccupied with saving the planet from itself his controversial opinions have made him unpopular in professional circles i would hardly be so tactless as to impart to you my views on the architectural design of this remarkable building but what is proposed seems to me like a monstrous the face of a much louder and elegant friend you have ladies and gentlemen to give this much to the luftwaffe when it knocked down our buildings it didn't replace them with anything more offensive than rubble we did that to the global environment and to become the genuine stewards of all life on earth not just the human bit of it meanwhile diana was preoccupied with the way she looked it was her way of expressing herself boosting her self-confidence and helping her to cope with the pressure of her marriage breakdown and restore her self-esteem summer sunday afternoons were spent watching charles play polo it was boring but she was caught and scolded by her husband for using the bonnet of his aston martin as a seat come prize giving and there was a lot for a glamorous lady to do her easy friendly manner made her the center of attention there were times though when she'd rebel and wear something not quite in keeping with the atmosphere of royal polo her style and taste has always been at odds with charles's he was a confirmed bachelor he had a very comfortable bachelor of existence um i mean he was surrounded by all the sort of furnishings he liked and he had a regular routine where he saw his friends on this day and this day he played polo he hunted on this day on that day his life was pretty complete i don't think he realized when he married diana that he was actually going to have to accommodate her in that picture that he was going to have to account for her um her taste you know that perhaps his tartan furnishings weren't going to appeal to a 19 year old who spent her life with her nose in fashion magazines you know she wanted change and i think he found that very hard to to understand diana never fitted easily into the horsey polo set as a small child she fell off a horse and has never liked them since as the sport of kings polo has provided charles with a much needed outlet for his energy with little day-to-day public contact these were rare moments of them seen together polo also provided charles with an excuse to meet up with old acquaintances well polo provided for many years prince charles's male friends who may not perhaps be the most sophisticated and intelligent male company you can pick out and obviously polo has its groupies uh female groupies and there were rumors for a number of years and there were occasional sightings alleged sightings of the prince with girls from that milieu let's say so there's no doubt yes that it encouraged him to see as it were occasional women as part of the perks of his role and to see other men uh rich aristocratic men treating these women as play things made him think that was part of what life was about during an annual skiing holiday in switzerland charles narrowly escaped death in an avalanche his close friend major hugh lindsey was killed and another friend severely injured charles blamed himself for the tragedy losing a close friend in an accident was a traumatic and unforgettable experience for him he's um extremely compassionate he's a genuine friend to people who he's known for a long time and i know people of you know male and female who've known him for many many years and if they ask him for help or even if they don't ask but he gets to hear that they are in trouble he will go to endless lengths to to help them if he can so he's very compassionate in that way he's not arrogant with people in that way but if people ever forget who he is for one moment he will the royal curtain comes down with with chilling finality uh because prince charles never ever forgets for one moment who he is he doesn't let anybody else ever forget it either long before the secret of diana's unhappy marriage became public knowledge many attempts were made behind the scenes to maintain charles's good name at the expense of the princess stories later emerged from behind the palace walls about diana's removal from the royal family when a crisis occurs in royal circles the palace machine puts its full weight behind the blood oil [Music] the queen was sympathetic and encouraged diana to soldier on despite charles's immovable and selfish ways i think charles is very much a strictly for role protocol i mean i know of one occasion when the the table was laid slightly wrong and i mean he just he just demanded that the whole thing be reset and lay it again and he sends very cryptic little memos to his staff about how things should be done and he likes his his toothbrush and in a certain place and if it isn't there it irritates him i mean but this is how he's been brought up he is a stickler for royal protocol charles's macho image of action man was shattered after a polo accident suddenly left him an invalid for several months with a badly fractured arm it was another blow to his pride when he emerged from a second operation the seriousness of the injury was obvious he made no secret of his pain how are you sir naturally for peace and quiet it was to his home at highgrove that charles went to convalesce and into the arms of camilla parker-bowles she was a really sympathetic shoulder to cry on i think she was a chum a soul mate somebody that he could relax with somebody who understood his problems was interested in him someone he didn't have to perform in front of didn't have to make any effort with i mean we all have people like that in our lives he is surrounded by staff and equals and private secretaries and he has very little opportunity it seems to me to relax in that way and i think that's what camilla provided someone that he could really let his hair down with as a man in crisis charles's own upbringing brought into focus yet again the lack of affection he received as a child from his mother the queen she was 26 years old and suddenly she had the burdens of being monarch thrust upon her what are you supposed to do say sorry i can't do this i've got to go in bath charles she really did try and be with him but remember we are judging and this is a really uh point i feel very strongly about we're judging the queen uh upbringing of her children by the 90s standards and this was back in 1950 in the 50s charles was born in 1948 and it was very different then for all of us diana's childhood was disrupted when her own mother walked out on the family home when diana was only 8 years old her bulimia can be traced back to her turbulent childhood she was left in the care of her father earl spencer who was bursting with pride when his daughter became engaged to prince charles what are you doing on the pavement outside the palace i thought you'd be inside i'm photographing the photographers yeah well what a marvelous day for you lovely days a lot of days we're all very happy i saw down last night you looking absolutely radiant raining very happy i've never seen her look better i've photographed every event in her life i'm photographing this one too later diana's father married rayne his second wife when he married um reign spencer i think she felt a great sense of isolation and loneliness um in that she never got on with her stepmother and i think in a way that posed problems when she married the prince of wales because he was very much a bachelor by the time he married her there was a huge age difference they had very little in common and she what she wanted was sort of love and costing and affection and i think he found that very hard to give her diana attempted to find some satisfaction in caring for those whose circumstances were far worse than her own [Music] diana is one of life's victims concerned for the sick and handicapped the aid sufferers the homeless and the unloved all of whom she identifies with what i have found both in my own experience and in my visits to organizations which support couples and children in difficulty is that there are certain common ingredients essential for families of all sizes and types there must of course be love but love in its most practical forms commitment to each other sharing together self-discipline and some self-sacrifice at a charity function for aid sufferers diana pleases everybody by looking glamorous in a way that as a child she had hoped to please her mother and latterly her husband she soon came to realize that the person from whom she had expected the reward of obedience and duty was too involved with his own needs to recognize hers as a bulimia sufferer diana did not admit she had a problem she always appeared happy and spent her life trying to help others yet there was rage beneath the sunny smile and an anger which bulimia suffers are afraid to express it may be futile to apportion blame but it's hard to resist the conclusion that charles's unique life is heir to the throne surrounded by sycophancy indeference made him incapable of treating anyone as an equal let alone in the loving and caring way required to build a marriage what always puzzled me was how charles could be so indifferent to this beautiful glamorous gorgeous creature who was who was standing by him it is only when you just when you realize that throughout the length of their marriage she had bulimia and she therefore was quite standoffish she was prickly she was difficult it's when you understand that that i think the whole the whole of the the past his behavior during those past years falls into place on an official visit to canada the mystique of royalty was maintained here the attention focused on the family the young princes carefully trained to meet the people do exactly what is expected of royalty [Music] [Music] despite her own marriage breakdown diana is determined to give her sons a happier childhood than she had in compensating for her own unhappy experiences she's accused of over-mothering them diana's got so many other problems to deal with she's a bit overprotective of her children i don't think any woman would blame her her mother although we perhaps unfairly say her mother left her when she was very young but to all intents and purposes it looks to us as if she was deserted by her mother but really the closest people to her are her children and i think if she smothers and overmothers them a bit goodness me i don't blame her i think i think any any woman would do the same relaxing with her two sons on a skiing holiday and away from her adoring public diana is still the focus of the people's attention this is her life and it's unlikely she'll ever be able to escape the public gaze charles has the comfort of his own family to give him the security he needs diana was now alone her skiing holiday was abruptly ended when her beloved father died unexpectedly unhappy that she wasn't at her father's bedside when he died she made her own way back home [Music] at the funeral her message to him was simple i miss you dreadfully darling daddy but will love you forever at his memorial service a few months later the family appeared together a rare occasion created out of family grief in egypt the lonely princess performed her duties to perfection both for the photographers and as the queen's representative the shaidai image gone she was now holding an audience with the president of egypt and charles was alone in turkey in the past he'd been photographed on holiday here with camilla parker-bowles on this occasion he was by himself escaping from the gaze of a curious press and trying to do some painting hidden behind a makeshift screen back home clouds were forming with the imminent publication of the book diana her true story confirming to the world for the first time the sham of his marriage to diana betrayal was in the air once diana realized that she'd been betrayed by her husband she was extremely angry and humiliated and what wife wouldn't be i don't believe uh that her cooperation with the book um or tacit approval of the book if indeed there was such a thing um was a deliberate attempt to get back at prince charles but i think when she when she realized the publicity that surrounded the revelations that she was not unhappy about the effect that this was going to have upon prince charles i don't think it was a deliberate attempt upon her part to seek revenge but once it had happened i think that perhaps she was not unhappy that it had taken place concerned for diana's health and state of mind her friends had allegedly gathered around her to expose the lies of the royal marriage her friend james gilby was amongst those who had helped diana through some of her painful years as well as carolyn bartholomew who had been her best friend since her school days she was not unhappy to see that story told i think even she was shocked and surprised by the degree of detail there was in the morton book and some of her friendships with some of the friends that talked to morton have not been quite the same since so i don't think she actually herself instigated getting the child's story out but she was very glad that it was told [Music] the campaign of character assassination took on a more sinister dimension with the publication of an illegally taped intimate telephone conversation between charles and camilla parker-bowles the prince and mrs parker-bowles met regularly but it appears from these tapes that on this occasion they had been forced to go without seeing each other [Music] [Music] i can't start the week without you i fill up your pack if you do personally then i'm all right [Music] [Music] buckingham palace and the royal family refused to comment on the authenticity of the tapes outwardly unconcerned by their publication charles's credibility was again questioned his reaction to the publication of the camilla gate tapes was total horror it was a quiet weekend at sandringham he knew it was coming even he on this occasion knew that this was going to be incredibly damaging and it did open up the whole question of was this mrs camilla parker bowles what was the nature of his relationship with her all the questions that journalists have quite rightly teased away at for the last couple of years and that he has now himself been forced to answer no denials were made confirming beyond all doubt charles's adultery with camilla he was relieved that the story was now public knowledge charles certainly knew of the existence of the camilla gate tape for a long time before it was published and it was a real sword of damocles hanging over his head and when it finally fell it was a crushing blow that he's still recovering from and will be i think for a number of years yet so who organized the illegal taping newspapers pointed an accusing finger at gchq the government's secret service listening agency the security services and indeed the queen herself were desperate to find what charles's intentions were and charles was dashing hither and thither spending nights well away from his bodyguards and as we now know spending much of the night talking on the telephone to his lover camilla parker-bowles an experienced hand could install bugging equipment with ease it's not a difficult thing to do 500 pounds for a bug and another thousand pounds for a receiver it's pretty basic equipment and almost anybody can go into a shop and buy this sort of stuff now newspapers claim that the taping of diana's intimate telephone conversations with her friend james gilby was charles's doing and that camilla was exposed by diana's friends to get back at charles just as the release of the squidgy tapes was entirely in charles's interest the release of the camilla tapes were in diana's at last everything she had been telling her friends was proved to be true charles far from being the loving husband and the caring father had indeed from an earlier stage of the marriage than has ever been revealed been a lover of camilla parker bowles while questions were being asked about the timing of a divorce diana took the boys away for a holiday given that the primary concern is the well-being of the young princes william and harry the complexities and reality of divorce had to be examined at length by both parties the separation agreement states that diana could lead a separate life within the royal framework joining prince charles on formal state occasions they would share custody of the children at any convenient opportunity diana whisks her sons away to have them to herself and keep them under her protective wing i can't help but feel that there are these two small boys growing up very quickly who are very loving and very adorable and one can't help but feel that she would look to them in some way to perhaps compensate her for what she's missed out on in her marriage and this would be not at all a good thing charles is sometimes dismissive to his children's needs as he feels his parents were of his he finds great difficulty in giving others something which he never had it could well be that charles could be unconsciously considering the possibility that what was okay for him would probably be all right for them and in fact it looks as if it's going in that direction already you see because his parents inevitably were separated from him because of their involvement with affairs of state as charles continues to demand respect and approval his estranged wife continues to pull the crowds wherever she goes by upstaging her husband throughout their married life she's been forced into a lonely corner where her only consolation comes from her adoring public up until now i suppose she's found love in the approval of the of the population in general because people do love her she does many good work she's terribly charitable she is very concerned for the well-being of others and she looks very attractive and this is something that she gets approval for and sure she feels loved by the people of the country within a year of their official separation diana felt confident enough to appear publicly with the royal family at sandringham on christmas morning her sons wanted her to be part of the christmas celebrations she left shortly afterwards to spend the rest of the holiday alone and perhaps recall the last 13 years back to the moment where she and charles were interviewed about their engagement there was no doubt then in diana's mind that she was marrying charles for love of course whatever in love means vince charles spoke often about what he wanted from marriage he wanted a companion he wanted someone to fulfill a role somebody to perform duties as far as he was concerned love affection uh came very much with very much secondary considerations he wanted a partner to fulfill a function [Music] charles admitted publicly in the television program that he had been unfaithful to his wife after their marriage in diana's mind he is lying since she knows he was unfaithful long before the marriage was on the rocks i think that's the one extraordinary omission from his confessional summer of 94 is that there's been no apology to the british people for letting down that fairytale marriage in which they'd invested so much no apology to his wife for his behavior and no expression of regret no i'm sorry about what i did just a slightly mealy-mouthed confession of adultery as if that were his prerogative and nothing else and a and a blithe determination to proceed as if nothing had happened charles could if he chooses remain formally married to diana if they divorce he could even marry his catholic lover camilla should she become free i think it's extremely difficult for the prince of wales to produce camilla parker bowles who would be a divorced catholic as a new princess of wales and a future queen i suspect that he still thinks he can do that i personally think he's wrong i don't think that he can marry camilla and become king there are too many constitutional religious and other complications along the way but he thinks he can diana has reduced her royal duties and effectively retired from public life her natural ability to capture the warmth of royalty will be sadly missed the smart money would be eventually on a divorce and charles remaining a divorcee with possibly female companions such as camilla parker-bowles by his side that's that's one scenario another one would be that they would remain separated at least for a decade decade or so [Music] diana hasn't made up her mind what she wants to do she's certainly not in a hurry there's no doubt to me that charles's mistreatment of her not just the adultery that he's now admitted but treating her like a second-class citizen below the salt as the entire family did when in her own immortal words she'd done so much for that ex-family was really the wrong way to treat the star member of the royal family and it's indicative of the way that the so-called born royals can never accept the ones that marry them as anything like on an equal plane regardless of the public success [Music] the magic is gone the marriage of the prince and princess of wales is over the royal family now faces the task of adapting to the challenges of the 21st [Music] century oh [Music] diana is now out on her own escaping the spotlight by letting her go the windsors have failed and world he can no longer set an example of happy family life [Music]
