welcome back to the channel racerx here and i am back with my good buddies in irving at clay cooley chevrolet and you can see actually the mustang right back here but today's video is not actually on the mustang it's not a mopar video today it is all about the camaro in particular the camaro ss and why it is so formidable in a naturally aspirated uh application it's a very unique engine so anyway i'm going to talk to you guys about it today we're going to talk all about just how fast a naturally aspirated camaro ss can really be should be a fun one if you're new to my channel please do me a big gigantic favor only 21 of you guys that are watching this video are actually subscribed to the channel please hit subscribe please hit the bell for more of my great content it'll let you know when i have a new video coming out and off we go so here is the car that i wanted to talk to you about today this is a 2022 camaro ss and i got to tell you these cars are really not that easy to find i've been wanting to do this video for you guys for a while and just have not really found a really good car to do it on it didn't really matter if it was an ss or an lt1 car it's just i need to have the lt1 engine to kind of really drive home what i'm talking about here this one is actually a beautiful car an all-black car with red accents i'm a huge fan as you guys can probably imagine but uh this is actually a red line edition you can see little pops of red all over this one uh you can see the red badges on the side on the mirror uh kind of little interesting spots there on the uh on the wheels even as you get inside of this edition the red seat belts the red pops on the door on the uh the center section all of that good stuff so i just kind of like that little bitty uh appearance package that they put on this camaro but uh they're very hard to find right now but really the main thing that i want to talk to you about today is just how incredibly fast these camaros can be when you keep them naturally aspirated and and really i talk a lot about the mustang obviously you know i own the mustang boom there it is it's a really fast car but it's got twin turbos on it i'm talking about somebody who's a little bit more uh budget conscious in the fact that uh look i want to keep this thing naturally aspirated but i mean these things are monsters just keeping them naturally aspirated and believe it or not of the mustang of course you know when you compare to the mopars especially but this is actually the lightest car of the bunch especially when you talk about the lt1 version of these so these cars are actually pretty light comparatively speaking so that's the first part of it so here is the rockstar in the camaro ss or even the lt1 version of this particular package that is well it's the lt1 engine it is a 6.2 liter all aluminum v8 from chevy it is really really nice we're talking about direct injection here and i will say this thing has so much potential so it's 455 horsepower 455 pound-feet of torque so when you compare that really to say like what's in the mustang in the coyote you're looking at 460 horsepower but far less torque in 420 obviously you have a lot more displacement uh when you talk about 5 liters versus 6.2 so the torque is definitely there with this particular package but that's only scratching the surface of what one of these camaro ss cars can really do because these engines respond extremely well to mods even so i mean you know if you take if you take the zl1 version of the camaro which i absolutely love i'm a huge fan as many of you guys know um this thing naturally aspirated definitely has the ability to surpass what the zl1 camaro can do and the cl-1 camaro is boosted it has that 1.7 liter supercharger sitting on top of that 6.2 liter engine but these things can be absolute monsters with just some work done to it a little bit of time a little bit of tuning work and these can actually be faster naturally aspirated than a zl1 so let me explain so here are my thoughts on why the camaro ss is so incredibly formidable if you just keep it naturally aspirated as a matter of fact when you talk about really the big three say like the camaro ss you talk about the um the mustang gt and then also you compared to say maybe a scat pack right um when you talk about the hemi those cars for some reason they just don't pick up that much with modifications so even if you do a cam in those you change it over to e85 it really doesn't respond all that crazy to e85 either and uh they come very optimized from the factory and the scat pack is a fantastic engine obviously that 6-4 hemi it packs a ton of low-end punch but when you talk about how much it can gain power wise it is expensive horsepower because when you do a cam in one of those just the cam itself you got to take the heads off of them it's pretty invasive and you're talking about like 4 000 bucks just for a cam whereas if you do uh a heads and cam package with the chevy car a completely different story altogether because the cam really just slides right into the front of this engine so by comparison the cam is much cheaper to do in one of these and for some reason you can put a bigger cam a much more lopey cam in this and it still stays very drivable it's just one of the great things about the camaro ss and then of course you can do the head work on these pretty easy as well when you talk about the mustang a completely different story again altogether right because the mustang you're talking about a completely different type of engine it's a dual overhead cam so it has four cams in it it has uh you know it's got four valves per cylinder it's just a completely different animal altogether so doing cams in a mustang they're a lot harder to tune it's a lot more invasive it can be done like anything else but this car a heads and cam package on one of these is just so much easier to do so when you really talk about cost efficiency and keeping things naturally aspirated i mean the lt1 is kind of where it is at it really does pick up a lot of power for the money when you talk about a big choppy lopey cam you can really hear the cams in these cars for some reason they sound really really good a little bit of headwork there you throw some uh some other things on it which i will explain to you in a minute kind of what that perfect setup is but the other thing is the e85 tunes on these it's just like in the mustang uh the mopars they pick up next to nothing with e85 they just really don't react all that favorably to e85 however both the coyote and the lt1 seem to pick up a lot of power on e85 it's just the way those engines are engineered even though the coyote and the uh and the lt1 are vastly different they both respond favorably to an e85 tune so here's what kind of floors me about the camaro ss and what i like about it so well this particular power plant now as i mentioned 455 horsepower is what this thing makes to the crank that's quoted by uh chevrolet these things tend to dyno somewhere right around the high 300s to right at that 400 range 401 for stock car not too bad there are a lot of variables when it comes to dyno tuning obviously it depends on what kind of dyno is it sae or std is it corrected all those sorts of things a little bit of humidity stuff like that but um you know and each dyno is just a little bit different but i did a lot of research and by and large when you look at stock camaro ss's somewhere around that 400 mark is kind of where they tend to land now with with keeping this thing naturally aspirated a really solid amount of work done to it though these things actually can make in the high fives in terms of horsepower to the tire [Music] now mind you and this is kind of what i wanted to talk about is the fact that a zl1 camaro it is boosted and it makes right in the like 550 560 range depending on the dyno [Music] basically we can say this is right around 550 560. i looked at all sorts of different dinos and i know a lot of people do mod their zl1s as well but a stock zl1 making say 560 and if you throw a heads and cam package on this and some other goodies you could make even more than that not quite as much torque but certainly you'll be there horsepower wise and in a much lighter platform that's why you can see uh zl1 camaros actually get beat by naturally aspirated camaro ss and lt1 cars it's kind of crazy to think about so what can you do to make that kind of power so how does one even start when you think about making say 570 wheel horsepower in a naturally aspirated very reliable platform well you do have to do a few things to this but it is a really solid way to go with one of these camaros first of all you'll probably want to change out your intake manifold i know msd makes a good one uh lsx makes some and you kind of just have to look at the different ones certainly and maybe a larger throttle body will help just a little bit get some of that cold clean air into the engine certainly an aftermarket cold aftermarket cold air intake will help you when you talk about like afe and open air filament you could go with a closed uh system as well and i think a lot of those closed systems work quite well on these cars but certainly you want to start with the top of the engine and then we get into kind of the heads and cam packages on these and that's really where you pick up a lot of power on these and you can go with a pretty big aggressive cam on one of these lt1 engines and the thing still runs quite well you're not worried about say one of the land rings failing quite so much like when you have a boosted application a lot of people say oh look you know you can just go ahead and just throw a supercharger well that's not always the simplest thing to do i realize yes you can make good horsepower about the same or even more when you when you go boosted but at the end of the day if you put a solid supercharger on one of these by the time you're done with tuning and fuel and all the other things that come with it i mean let's be honest you're out about 10 grand a heads and cam package on one of these even with all the other supporting mods on it is going to run you much less but a big bumpy lopey cam that sounds good at a stop light that is a great way to go on one of these a little bit of head work on this and you have a solid heads and cam package and it really isn't crazy crazy money to do that and certainly on the back side you're going to want to put some long tube headers in there and probably a really nice um cat-back system on there whether it's borla or corsa magnaflow really it's going to be subjective they'll all pick you up just a little bit of power but not a ton possibly some high flow cats will help you as well but that is really the recipe for making these things into monsters it's really nothing crazy it's nothing we haven't seen for a really long time for some odd reason this lt1 engine it just really likes to breathe and it really does well with like low end torque um you still see these things make good torque numbers i mean 500 torque is nothing out of the ordinary on one of these things keeping it naturally aspirated and fairly safe and certainly an e85 tune to kind of finish it off that is what really makes these cars come alive and make that kind of horsepower but i mean we're talking almost what like 170 180 horsepower jump still keeping it natural aspirated not boosting the thing that is crazy to think about so there you have it i mean that is really why you see so many of these naturally aspirated lt1 cars that are just incredibly fast the heads and cam packages on these are just really easy to do and i know some people out there the die hard mustang guys are gonna say hey look you know i've got a mustang and it's naturally aspirated and i gap hellcats and i get that because i have seen that and i know how formidable the mustangs are on the highway with e85 tune and all the stuff i talked about but i mean for the money when you talk about heads and cam packages the lt1 is just much easier to do like i mentioned and it just you know when you're talking about four cams in the in the mustang and just how to get them tuned right and all that sort of stuff and then you talk about the headwork in those it's a little bit more invasive just a little harder to do on those cars not to say you can't have a really fast naturally aspirated mustang 5-0 because we see a lot of those out there as well but this is the most budget-friendly like heads and cam really fast like almost 600 wheel horsepower deal that you can get in the lt1 camaro i mean they are fantastic when you keep them in a so at the end of the day what would i do i would probably uh build a a naturally aspirated car if i was going to get a camaro ss if i was going to have a coyote just like what i've already done you've seen it coyotes love boost they're one of the best boosted cars out there and if i was going to get a car to just drive around leave it mostly alone just do a few goodies to it and really enjoy the low end punch that's when i would go for something like a scat pack so each of these cars has their merits but it is just crazy to me that a naturally aspirated camaro ss can absolutely give a zl1 fits all day long and and oftentimes beat it uh with and still keep it reliable without a crazy amount of work done to it pretty good stuff let me know what you think about this stuff in the comments uh below guys and i will catch you on the next one so until then racerx [Music]
