How Business Leaders can use Generative AI for Digital Transformation: Thoughts from a PhD in AI

for leaders how do you use generative AI to learn lead and transform your organization say you change into a new role and you want to be able to quickly understand the new domain how do you do that a few years back you would have hired a Consulting organization learned on your own and used domain experts in your new organization to acquire that knowledge the problem is it would have taken six months or so and cost a lot of money now you can use generative AI to get 80 percent of that same information in a few hours time and at significantly lower cost I'll use a hypothetical example of a CEO who's moving from retail to Airlines this person brings great management experience and skills but needs to quickly understand the domain one way to do that is to understand the basic business capabilities of their new organization this can in turn help you understand strategy competitive positioning determine work priority allocate resources effectively and so on that's where generative AI can help instead of telling you let me show you it's actually pretty easy I'll only focus on text and not images it's just like using the internet search just like how many search engines like Google Bing Yahoo DuckDuckGo Etc are available generative AI is available as gpt4 from openai Palm from Google Llama from meta and Claude from anthropic among many others I'll use claw 2 in my example since it's relatively more powerful and it's free first you go on to claude.ai and create an account that's easy enough to do so I won't walk you through that whole process here's a prompt that I'm going to give it I'll use variable names so I can replace the roles in Industries easily but I'll read it as if I substitute the variable names in there you are a business strategist and consultant who has deep knowledge of both business and technology you help the businesses incorporate Technology For Speed agility Automation and transformation currently I am the CEO of a retail organization I'm taking up a new role as the CEO of an airline company while my management skills are superb I have very little knowledge of the airline business one way I feel I can get up to speed quickly about the airline industry is to understand their business capabilities after I understand that I can make decisions on how for example to introduce artificial intelligence into the business to drive transformation write a 700 word article that gives me guidance on what to do the article should be in a conversational style but be professional give specific directions with examples that I can execute on [Music] foreign go through some parts of it it's a good idea to understand the business capabilities [Music] next I can immerse myself in the industry look at the competitive landscape finally I can figure out where I can introduce AI with actual suggestions of use cases like customer service flight disruptions and dynamic pricing let me first get the business capability model since we don't have one I'll ask Claude to generate it here's my prompt for that you are an expert business architect who has worked across many domains your specialty is creating detailed business capability models for Business Leaders to understand their domains I need you to develop a business capability model for the airline industry this should include core functions like Customer Service Supply Chain management and sales and marketing let's focus on strategic capabilities please give me a comprehensive list of at least nine level one business capabilities for Airlines then for each of these level 1 capabilities generate at least nine level two business capabilities in a table format for easy readability for each level 2 capability also add a short description here's the level 1 capabilities followed by a well organized table of level 1 and level 2 with even a description I can validate this with the domain experts and then internalize it to build my mental model of the airline industry I'm heading up I can use this to identify the airline's competitive advantage for example Southwest Airlines might be focusing on schedule optimization and Slot management to bring down their costs Virgin Atlantic on the other hand May focus on customer care and airport services so there you have it a quick way to get a mental model of your new environment of course you should validate what generative AI produces with experts but this is just the tip of the iceberg for how generative AI can help think of it as your own personal assistant with vast knowledge and organizing capabilities At Your Service if you enjoyed watching this video please consider subscribing for a one-page visual summary of this video please subscribe to my mailing list thank you
