Buster's they're calling this one of the biggest games in Tulane in the last ten years it's the American Conference opener for the Houston Cougars and the Tulane Green Wave from the Olman Stadium in New Orleans it's Thursday night which means it is throwback Thursday and why not throw it back to one of the Great's in college football history Tim Tebow set an FBS record during the 2006 o-7 season with 14 straight games on the rushing touchdown Keenan Reynolds - the same thing in 2015 tonight D Eric King Houston's quarterback has a chance to break the FBS record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown not only that we know Tim Tebow can also sling it a little bit he set a record in FBS history with 14 straight games with a pass and rush TD tonight tira King has an opportunity to break that record after he had an opportunity to tie it a week ago impressive history for T Eric King one of the most electrifying dual-threat quarterback in all of college football kickoff from New Orleans with myself Matt Hasselbeck Pat McAfee and Molly McGrath is coming up where now we'll look inside Nissan's high-speed house [Music] I am here with Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen coach what do you need to see from D Eric King in your offense in this game tonight well justjust improvement general improvement managing the game you know he's no different than the rest of them this is still new to everybody so we just get trying to get a week better and we got a big challenge here at Tulane I'm four games in less than three weeks I know you guys are banged up how did you manage that this week I take me too long to figure that out to tell you on that we're not going to use that as an excuse you know we've we prepared the same way and we've been ready to play each and every week I got no reason to think that we're not going to be ready to play tonight all right Thank You coach this has been the Nissan pregame rush from yeoman Stadium in New Orleans [Applause] Houston Cougars wanted to matching their worst start in five years they're hoping to avoid a one-in-three start for the first time since 2012 that season was the last time finished under 500 for the third time in four games Houston has won the toss they have received all three times they've won the toss they want their offense on the field first and we'll get a look at D Eric King and the Houston Cougars from the 25 at the yard line if you're just joining us our Thursday night spotlight on D Eric King trying to break an FBS record with passing and rushing touchdowns in consecutive games Matt I know you like the dynamic nature of what the air at kick breaks I sure do listen he can do it all as a runner as a passer reminds a lot of people of Kyler Murray maybe because he broke so many of Kyler Murray's Texas high school football records but you talk about dynamic and then you add this Dana Holgorsen offense this is as fun and exciting of a quarterback as a player to watch in college football [Music] [Applause] they'll keep it here with Kyle Porter blocking many of us down to Stevenson his target everybody talked about the Eric in being a water the Tulane defense knew that it almost felt like he was going to do it that he pulls up and drops a dime to mark was Stephenson to start in an electrifying fashion man well we said it he can do it all you got to honor him as a runner it looked like Iran he tucks it under his arm he's got three points of pressure then he pulls back as a passer and throws to his top target marques Stevenson the guy is a burner yards after catch what a way to start for Houston 75 yards April 14 seconds and the Cougar offense has come up firing and this is essentially like a halfback pass except in the case in this case that halfback is the quarterback so Marquette Stevenson runs out as if he's going to be a lead blocker and then just blows by the defender who's coming up in runs support you see you see the quarterback tear came running to the side like kind of going sideways horizontal and then he doesn't even try to get vertical except he throws the vertical pass by the way absolute dime on the run there from the Eric King Dana Holgorsen told Molly right before they went on the air I already have my first play called seemed like it was the right decision mr. Dana Holgorsen told us this week we're still learning we only have a year with it we're still trying to figure it out you heard him say it's a volley that's a good way to utilize the irritates kill just when you think you've kind of seen it all from this offense that's air raid creative offense they come up with these new wrinkles that really I don't know how you could possibly prepare for it all so Mari Jones he's got a lot of speed himself trying to put together a good return and he takes it to the 20 our line so obviously here at King gets a lot of attention but let's throw the spotlight on another dynamic quarterback the transfer for LSU Justin McMillan who is 7 & 2 as a starter in too late yeah he really is 7 & 2 in those two losses one came this year to you know against a great good Auburn team and the other losses last year at Houston and Justin McMillan he's a good runner he really is but he's also got a live arm a quick release and you mentioned he transferred from LSU he's got experience with some of those NFL passing concepts think camp Cameron North Turner's some of those concepts gonna take off and he will not get a whole lot they're not run down by David Nitti they'll be a loss of Horace started really a tough start you know all of his eligible receivers they were trying to flood the left side of the field Justin McMillan is not obviously a left-handed quarterback and for some reason he tried to scramble to the right had no eligible receivers no chance to throw it away he was kind of forced over there but obviously not ideal for the left he'll hand off to Amari Jones and he gets run down quickly on the perimeter baris a burner to if he gets loose he gets loose what an incredible tackle there wrap him up drag him down to the ground that was third and wall for a two lane team that got punched in the mouth early by the University of Houston bringing some Pittsburgh flavor down to New Orleans Pittsburgh I was curious I didn't know if that was by you Pittsburgh quick I was be a combination she'd have a lot of big drop the Cajun in there if you need it who dad said that he's gonna get the first thing he's gonna short on the password are now Mooney just overthrown Lewis in coverage and a green out for two lanes offense and it's hard to overthrow Darnell ammonium this guy is probably sub for for an NFL type wide receiver I think what happens early in the game for quarterbacks sometimes you know your team's hyped up you're on national TV ESPN Thursday Night Football you gotta kinda just like relax a little bit got to be a little more cool steady calm sometimes that's a harder set easier said than done as a quarterback the fridge Pat is back to punt Ryan Wright I love to spend 6 3 to 55 and he hits for the boy put it inside the 15 the fridge saw his team was in trouble on the pill and hit a ball coffin corner in the University of Houston now has to deal with that 61 yard punt backed up a little bit small parts that opened up five years ago of course the Tulane Green Wave played their games at the Superdome for 39 years before this Stadium opened up and Willie Fritz in his sport season got this team to a bold victory last year down 7 nothing the Houston and their dynamic quarterback Derek can't go back to work from the 15th [Applause] design quarterback run and quickly brought down after a gain of one by Marvin wheeler you know to Lane only has six winning seasons in the last 37 years they've been playing football here for a hundred and twenty six years obviously not an ideal start but he can't get a stop here you can really start trying things around especially after her 61 yard bomb Matt Hasselbeck [Applause] [Music] Kame rifles he's got his man it's keep Corbin and Corbin gets to the sticks at the 25-yard line picking up a nine let's get more on D Rat King well out of my ass T Rat King about breaking some Tebow's touchdown record he said that doesn't matter I haven't accomplished anything yet there Vincent growing pains for our offense and that is on me I need to be better he said that he wants to better control the game by being a pass first quarterback saying people think I want to run first but I want to prove that I can throw the ball wanted to throw here nothing downfield and we'll just sling it away with a penalty marker thrown got hit by Patrick Johnson in the backfield with that flag flying in you know when you get that air raid offense [Applause] he was known to be a great runner right I mean he has 14 games straight with a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown one moment Dana Holgorsen shows up all of a sudden you're in that air raid offense now make him a better passer I think is what Dana wants to do but how can you take the electrifying a bit athletic ability away from him you can't you just gotta hope he can add to the other skills and the penalty there as blockers you know when you're quarterback scrambling you think he's gonna run you go downfield and then all of a sudden that's why there's a penalty he decides to throw it last minute when the ball is released if there is an ineligible player beyond three yards of the line of scrimmage it is a penalty that was the case there so it sets him back to first and 15 in pile Porter the transfer from Texas picks up that penalty yardage back set up second down and 10 that you know Pat white very well obviously you were in West Virginia you had a dynamic dual threat quarterback like that what do you what do you see well I think just like dr king at any given moment pat lake could take the top off the defense with a throw and a run you had Steve Slaton in there Noel Devine and you've got options like this it's a pretty easy way to pick up yards it's a good offense and I think that's why dr king has been so successful for smart decisions like that this time he finds Kyle order for 11 more yards really nice job by dear King there they brought the corner blitz to the right side of the quarterback he sent saw it right away scrambled left kind of took up what could have been a bad play turned it into a great play for Houston feels like a lot of people say that during Houston games when the Eric King is at QB he's got time to throw looking for Jeremy singleton and a little bit over crawl with with coverage for macarius he is known as golden beets on the outside for two lanes deeper and same thing I said for Justin McMillan on Hertz his first shot downfield to go round a lot of times coaches will say hey we're gonna take a shot early in the game that means usually that means we're gonna take a go-round meaning I'm just gonna go right by you I'm running straight and both times both quarterbacks just a little too much juice on the ball you gotta let your guy have an opportunity to touch the ball it's prime time Matt all jacked up very less a fair flag thrown by the up drop that that's French that's French facemask offense number 74 the 15-yard penalty remains second down well it's not a lazy ain't fair penalty though facemask that's a big one it's a big one penalties have kind of been a problem for Houston they really have really both teams but Houston in particular against Washington State just so many false starts Holdings eight penalties against Washington State half of them came on the opening drive last week and what ended up being a seven-point loss for Houston it's not good not ideal second and 25 this is a long one quick fake throw to the outside here comes Trayvon Bradley and he gets few yards back [Music] and two lanes defense is a man coverage offense they're gonna play man coverage they believe in their DBS they believe in their talent their athleticism they're gonna challenge these receivers outside I don't think Houston's gonna back down from the challenge you might see some wide receiver screens but you know they want to take shots downfield expect some measure out some pick routes two-man combinations the rush just for forcing King out of the pocket stops and fires and Trayvon Bradley reaching out near midfield what a play they said they don't look at they said they easy keep him in the pocket need to keep him in the pocket what dear King there was beat Patrick Johnson around the end there and deliver a time for an ice cream big time first down there on third down needed 18 yards they get 22 my mouth at play Julius Kahn first the charge timeout to maybe a loose one here with 938 to play in the opening quarter Houston a big conversion Case Keenum who put together some of the most prolific offensive numbers in college football history when Dana Holgorsen was his offensive coordinator at the University of Houston it will see football this week against the Chicago Bears as he starts for the Redskins we sure well case keenum I think is one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the NFL I know Dana Holgorsen after talking to him he certainly agrees with that eight of the 32 starters this weekend air raid quarterback and without that that's a quarter of the league Pat did you know that quick math adds up you're right how many are left handed no left-handed quarterbacks in the NFL [Applause] tips and overthrows got to get those that's a difference maker in the game to playing a talented explosive offense you need the ball to bounce your way the ball is not round you need chances [Applause] right what right jaelyn Monroe his first career pick deflected coach Willie Fritz has a sign all around this building it says it's all about the ball it's all about the ball means turnovers turnovers turnovers we got to protect the ball on offense we got to find a way to get takeaways on defense that's a team effort splitting the blocks balls in the air got to get it balls in midfield for the Tulane offense eight takeaways already this season for Tulane turnovers when you games one one harvest they're just deboned his way through the tackle interrupted the pass from Sierra King and what an interception now can the Tulane offerings build off of it nothing much there for Macmillan Mexico City Mexico zone yaaaaaay Rodriguez taken out Jeremy Stephenson a featherweight main event strawweight Carla Esparza and Alexa Grasso swearing off the co-main both winners trying to get back at a title contention main card in English in Spanish es PN plus comm /u FC C that's yes in Spanish you've dropped three languages tonight I'm looking I'm looking at these signalers over here on Tulane there's another language inside [Applause] for Darius Bradwell penetration upfront this is interesting 56 57 yard field goal right now so let's hit the offense stays out there this is national TV this is Tulane this is Thursday Night Football they're not punting the ball no offense back end the round action they need it just the 48 yard line the Maury Jones got hit hard by the Marion Williams but it isn't enough for the first down this isn't the ESPN toto ESPN news the ESPN set forth as he has been you this is ESPN a y'all been stadium you got to go for it on fourth and short little end around there picks up just enough for another first down the extended run and it's really kind of a creative play call they're thinking bread-and-butter they're gonna go pound it again with Brad well but they go with that kind of Sean McVeigh jet sweep barely enough for the first down the fake to Brad well the lefty McMillan fire [Applause] Trustin Macmillan just uncork the bow detailing McCluskey who transferred here to Tulane strictly to play for the team his dad coach a 38 yard bomb to almost even the score here in the first half what's the perfect part of the field for a shot he had Mooney wide open he decided to throw it to the guy that was double covered but there's no defense for the perfect throw McCluskey with the touchdown they've been waiting to see him show up it's a naked bootleg I mentioned Mooney comes across my left McCluskey number one is double covered no defense for that throat McCluskey on the touch [Music] JJ Jalen played four games last year for Oklahoma State and all of a sudden left the team and a lot of people kind of surprised what's going on Willie took advantage of the red shirt fool last year because he wanted to transfer and finish his career at Tulane playing for his father Jay Jay McCleskey who is the defensive backs coach from Salinas had an NFL career of his own with Portland State and the Arizona Cardinals very tight you got to think that for Jalen McCleskey his first punched out with his dad watching on the sidelines as they're battling Houston together and has got to be impossible yeah that's really cool and his dad was a former NFL player and he's got NFL talent you mentioned sixth all-time and catches at Oklahoma State he really hadn't shown up for this offense yet only four catches on the season and they wanted to get him involved they got him involved early tonight now we get a look at his old team where he was a very productive receiver they still have a deep receiving for Oklahoma State at number 12 Texas the Cowboys have had the better of that matchup and one of the class keys old teammates is one of the best winters one of the best possession receivers political candidate is the off guitar out of Oklahoma State in Thailand walls there's all kinds of talent coming out of Oklahoma State I know of another Oklahoma State wide receiver and James Washington he's got to show up for Mason Rudolph in Pittsburgh filling in for Ben Roethlisberger Pittsburgh lot of former Cowboys on that Steelers roster now tear a king at a tie game goes back to working wrapped up by Cameron simple and then drilled by Lawrence brand the partners is caving in on a man that is 100% two lanes objective admission tonight well it's camp sample you know he showed up here at about 230 pounds as a freshman now he's about 285 pounds he's an NFL prospect he's got big power strength his counter his counterpart on the other side Patrick Johnson said hey that's my guy that's who I learn everything from cam sample Patrick Parr be right back at the line of scrimmage third down and long coming up guys this was a seven nothing game Houston had converted that huge third and 18 they were in Chilean territory and this is a far different feeling a lot of guys on the field for too late it's a free play for here at King throwing it up top and it's incomplete looking for Bryson Smith second time we've seen this happen tonight in Chile and this is something the New England Patriots do Tom Brady does this very well catch you with 12 guys on the field illegal substitution late commitment first men on the field five-yard penalty should third down bad got Houston in to Tulane territory the first time around Willie Fritz had to use a timeout there and unable to get it off and you usually use it when you know the other team is substituting okay so it's a short yardage situation you see two lanes defense they're trying to run off the field they're having an issue doing that the offense might say something like Mayday Mayday Mayday set hut and everybody blocking get set just get the free play you got a free five yards on that it's third down and five and Tulane brings pressure King dumps it off he's got place in Smith and he was able to maneuver past the sticks right there for a first down and Houston gets away with one I think cam sample the guy who had the sack earlier gets his helmet knocked off probably an illegal hands to the face that doesn't get called Jared Williams all over it the cam samples looking at the referee like hey man what on earth are you looking at and now he has to come off the field for a play because his helmet came off without a penalty marker throw Derek King with a lot of patience there find the path instead of just running it found this guy picked up a first down now we got guys breaking tackles here that's Patrick Carr the transfer from Colorado going for 13 on the play broke the tackle florence graham and turned it into a game and its really a one-two punch for houston it's patrick our number 21 it's kyle porter number 22 both transfers one from colorado one from texas explosive guys kind of bruisers good north/south runners tempo yes Dana Holgorsen University Houston Cougars Patrick Carr had a career-high 149 yards last year a couple of touchdowns in that blowout win against Tulane in Houston made his season debut last week he didn't play in the first two games cuz you get a nice scope about a month ago so was unable to perform showed some explosiveness last week in his return yeah no big deal had a nice go but now I'm just seeing all running between the tackles and now it's d arick cake with a good run to get close to the sticks and set up slower down and short Darrin King has taken some hits you know if I was his coach I would not want him to take these types of hits you hear people talking about hey Kyler Murray doesn't take a lot of hits Russell Wilson doesn't take a lot of hits that's I think the challenge for some of these very mobile quarterbacks you want to have a long career if you want to stay on the field you got to find ways to not take these brutal through the shots [Applause] Dana Holgorsen joke that he was gonna get kicked out of the air raid club because he uses a tight end and a fullback sometimes he might get kicked out of Houston for breaking his head so he just tossed that whatever was happening is the site from Athens for college gameday start your day on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Eastern on ESPN of the ESPN app big hole for Kyle Porter and he's able to work past the sticks to convert another third down and this is gonna be the eighth play of the drive coming up for Houston I'd love Dana Holgorsen losing his mind finding his composure and dialing up the right play running drop lay up got there to pick up a first down on earth third one I wonder what he was so mad about what do you think it could be the lack of Red Bull here we had some of the boot from that the air allegedly my purpose is complete for marquest davidson Crewe's that's a surprising drop Marquette Stevenson is one of the better receivers that I've watched college football this year sometimes you get alligator arms in his own coverage this is a man play you're calling crossers like that for man coverage run away from the guy covering you that was zone they don't play a lot of zone here Tulane he's running across and maybe just took his eyes off the ball just a little bit because he doesn't know who that his own neck zone players gonna be you got a big hit coming maybe he already scored for 75 yards we need them down the line can take the big shot I respect it understand of it now he's coming around the outside speed burners for Marquess Stephenson tiptoeing down the line inside the flame you're now forgiven for your drop big run of 32 yards for Marquess Stephenson really really nice he had a touchdown catch against Washington State last week had the drop just there they go right back to him on the reverse looked like he could have gotten a couple more yards it's almost like he's like you know what they're on the one I'm gonna get my touches there isn't a couple more us to be hitting one maybe one more yards I love that oh that's all right I better kick on Lucy it's a little respect for goal line defense big bodies on big bodies mile porter going airborne Potter's in for the touchdown the touch up over a pile of humans and score 6 points for my college seems like he did break the plane that landed into the end zone a touchdown for Porter his second of the year [Music] transferred from Texas Dana Holgorsen he's one of the smarter guys I've ever had the chance to coach high school all-american four straight state title games two titles and out Dalton Witherspoon that's the extra point to get Houston a seven point lead after a ten play 75-yard Drive to dry the Case Keenum woulda liked he'll be in action for the Redskins against the Bears Redskins Owens who to start bears got away with one because of any money in Euro winning it at the horn in that thin air in Denver so don't want anyone going into Monday Night Football that's it six o'clock Eastern Time has started off with Monday night countdown and of course our man Matt Hasselbeck getting ready for Sunday NFL countdown 10 a.m. Eastern Time Patrick mahomes talking about the no-look I hear you're gonna be doing a little something about that yeah we're gonna do that you know patch bombs great air raid quarterback last year's NFL MVP think a lot of these air raid college coaches Dana Holgorsen being one of them they're watching very closely how some of these air raid quarterbacks are doing and probably even more than that house House Kliff Kingsbury gonna be doing in Arizona with this offense work used to be considered a gimmick they made fun of the air right that isn't football that's gimmicky football now it's everywhere I would want to defend anybody I don't have any athleticism but we have a game here we do in Houston sidelines going nuts they're geeked up you guys are talking about the air raid halp ami oh of course copra school high school in Texas in the late 80s goes to Iowa Wesleyan where he and Mike Leach kind of introduced it Dana Holgorsen was one of their wide receivers Art Briles gets it as a as an assistant under Leach you know to brings it to Houston then to Baylor seth luttrell at North Texas Sonny dykes at SMU Jakes Pavan Hall is for head coaching job at Texas State Jeff Dana Holgorsen here and I think as you mentioned earlier in our meeting today Matt today we're gonna be looking at Kliff Kingsbury in Arizona to see how he does in the NFL with that offense cuz maybe some of these guys might start to spill up a level and listen adults don't forget about guys like Baker Mayfield and Jared Goff you know this offense can work concepts are already being run in the NFL guys are studying college tapes NFL coaches are spending their offseason learning how people defend air raid they're learning how people install air raid it's really fun to see I love when people kind of push the limits of what you can do on the football field get creative nobody more creative than these guys Tulane a much different looking augments elements of the triple option that have been mixed in with the spread this feels like a real college off McMillon looking for jaylen mccleskey part of this really good receiving pour let's go down to Molly McGrath before while Adam the message to Tulane's receivers on the sideline was ride this momentum and look for those one-on-one matchups because they're DB's can't cover us and this Tulane sideline is boozing with confidence right now they're telling each other we need to believe that we are the better team and you can tell that they really do and that's not something that to Lane has been able to say in the past Adam coach redstone the boys to ride the wave the Green Wave of momentum I was in a shot though do I like yeah taking a shot justin McMillan's got to keep that ball inbounds let your 2 receiver have a chance to touch the football this feels like an important third down in nine eight back in coverage for Houston McMillan looking for a window and cannot find a receiver jeté vien towles was the closest man to it at the middle Darnell moody was on the outside just like that after Houston gets a score two lanes got a pump the ball back with Ryan ripe and McCluskey was open you know I really enjoyed our time with Willie Fritz yesterday head coach really just I liked his demeanor a leader of men kind of liked what he was saying schematically I was impressed and guys are open I really think that the difference is gonna be can Justin McMillan connect on a couple of these deep balls but in Houston which has already blocked a handful of kicks this season bring in some heat good bounce behind right we like that a lot Ryan right in a 61 yard bomb earlier hit one about 22 yards it bounced another 40 I like what he's got going on let's take a look back at our Enterprise Drive recap Doosan took a 14 to 7 lead with some impressive work with Derek King and on the ground Kyle Porter get it done and it really was converting on third down they came back to mark West Stephenson after his drop on the reverse takes it down to the 1 and it's got Kyle Porter the Houston native and a Katy Texas goes over the top for the simple sport kind of a Walter Payton jump their path over the top sweetness is that right yeah oh yeah you got a bright County High football IQ speaking of which the Eric King looking downfield tough flow to the sideline for Keith Corbin hold onto an incomplete intended and if you're two-lane what you want to do is you want to try to keep the air King in the pocket there they do all they can to keep him in the pocket he decides to leave anyway that ball is almost completed the air King has been described as Superman when it's an off schedule play they would like him to stay in the pocket and beat him from that and it off here or pass a car good penetration from this two-lane defense it'll be a loss of two yards coming up for the stop the Andre Williams was a big part of it and then closed out and the strength of the Tulane defense is that D line they are stout upfront I would say the leader of that group would probably be T Andre Williams the era King airing it out again incomplete taking a shot and Jeremy singleton unable to hold on so Houston brings on the Aussie Dane Roy who before he became a college football player was an ice-cream salesman in Bunyon Australia he's 30 years old he was an aussie rules football player for richmond central one the longest kick competition of the aussie football grand final in melbourne with a 70 three-meter torpedo 79 yards Pat McAfee that's a long way he's 30 he's a grown man and I'll tell you what I was watching him hitting warm-ups the kids got a big leg backed up here need one for his team he's 30 Pat he's not a kid he's probably he's six foot seven Jacob Robertson will return it into Houston territory so they had to returners back there because these Ozzy rules punters can go both ways that's kind of a smart move by coach fritz who's about the Special Forces this season every food bowl an extra point paid by participating universities oh they will make a contribution to the university's general scholarship Thank You Allstate for your beautiful nets and your beautiful contributions well done man well done well done crank it back to that room window please these Aussie punters they roll up because the aussie rules game they have a kick as a kid that can put it anywhere on the field coach fritz is a special teams mastermind he actually has a DVD out there put to returners back so the ball doesn't hit the ground get a big roll that was a smart move by them down there good field position that DVD is called Special Forces and now Justin mcfillin looking for a special receiver could not connect with Stefan cutter sit in completed its second down it's really not a bad throw it's a tough catch Utterson can't come down with it got a real router kind of a two-man combination out there it's just a little bit wide you'd love to see Stefan hunterson come down with that ball just 1 for 5 macmillan to start this game trying to get some movement with cory dolphine who's an explosive play specialist or too late maybe a half yard though right back at the line and it's third down in ten houston players injured [Music] looks like Emil Fleming the senior from Lamar Texas a veteran on this team playing in his 36th game tonight and Houston we mentioned they've played four games in 19 days they're banged up at the linebacker position I think three guys are having surgery this week in four games in nineteen days is tough yep and they've had a place Oklahoma and Washington State in the first three games and we'll see sorry and working on a short week this this weekend they'll have one game in the next twenty two days so it'll be a little bit easier good to see a meal Fleming back up on his feet that's an interesting schedule you got there for four games in nineteen days and then one game one game in twenty twenty-one days they'll take on North Texas they'll have a bye week after that Plus obviously when you play on Thursday they left some time on the back end of next week with for the Saturday game and Tulane they don't care about any of that there they got a third and long here they're over three on third down and their average distance is third and eight that is not what they're looking to do [Applause] who's been up front about these refused to meet this year's man 12 penalties against Florida International 11 penalties in that loss to Auburn they did a better job last we cut it down to just four in their win over Missouri State yeah well coach Willie Fritz said hey listen the wave don't beat the wave we can't shoot ourselves in the foot they said in practice they were doing instant up-downs if someone's gonna have a false start and jump offsides feel like you guys gonna make me through that at some point this year huh men mcfillin pumps nothing downfield and he gets drilled by Derrick parish off the edge [Applause] it's really is kind of a coverage sack me McMillan has enough time there's just really not anywhere to go with the football and right now special teams special forces has to bail out this offense after they go over for on third down hopefully give some good field position to their defense unable to do anything with the great field position they got here light moves it away to the sidelines to see where they spot it you guys were talking about the schedule though for this Houston cougar team you got to open up on a Sunday night at Oklahoma you get Prairie View sandwiched in between that Washington State game which was on a Friday last week and now you have too late on a Thursday night the left North Texas next Saturday and then a much-needed bye week for being able to tough schedule and really I thought that chance to win that Washington State game they had what I thought looked like an interception got challenged late in the game was not an interception but they were in that game football players are a creature of habit to schedule is a big deal for games in 19 days and had a 22 day off I'll be interested to see how Dana Holgorsen can handle all but tonight he's trying to get up to sportsmanship 1050 Houston Drive of the opening quarter begins with a pile for a run across the 40-yard line he's had a productive opening frame to say the least 17 yards they don't have to run another play as we've had a wild opening quarter in the first Thursday night game on ESPN in the short five year history of Yavin Stadium they were pumped up for tonight in this American and Conference opener some big plays already the first one of the game belong to Marquess Stephenson 475 his score [Applause] [Music] bust it out of the shorts tonight little piece of bourbon coming right over here on delaine's football field at Euston I know I notice you you said bourbon instead of Bourbon Street you actually might be correct I don't be honest I think it's a combination of the first down for Houston and it's Kyle Porter again making a bat mist into the open field and inside the 30 up to Lane finally brought down by PJ Hall 30 yard run there this is a strong north/south run Houston does a nice job of threatening you going vertical but hits you going north and south a missed tackle there by jelena we've got an injury on the field now for Thomas the sophomore from Montgomery Alabama was down in the deck very quickly we'll check on him when we come back Alfred Thomas was able to get up and needed some help to get off the field after he got undercut by Macon Clark his teammate safety Porter's run has set Houston up at the 28 yard line into Lane Territory and a quick strike to keep Corbin and keep Corbin is into the end zone far to touch down too early whenever you got the run getting going like that it really opens up everything else to scare the Calla porter and then that pass is just a wide open touchdown for the kid that tough sequence for making Clark misses the tackle on the play before hurts his teammate then they go with the RPO it just kind of takes a bad angle keep corporates coming across a hundred miles an hour we mentioned earlier yards after the catch that's his specialty made it look easy Pat you get that run game going they got a respect that are in the RPO and then all of a sudden boom pull it wide open cutter for the University of Houston up to scores all of a sudden that and you might have seen this play Baker Mayfield ran this play to obj just this week I'm gonna fake a run straight down hill the quarterbacks eyes are not on the handoff they're on the backer he just reads it it's a simple slant inside I mean that's a touchdown in flag football not even close the yards after the catch yak why ac is big in this Houston offense dear king it's look easy forth came in 19 days it doesn't seem to be slowing them down they'd already have 40 more pass charts and they average here in the second corner just getting started and in the first three games used to Dana Holgorsen really seem to slow down the tempo slow down the tempo against Washington State they had three possessions in the entire first half tonight they don't seem to be holding back they know they got 22 games till their next game they're going up tempo Maydays catching you with 12 guys on the field running a ton of plays they're over 25 plays already tonight Dana's telling his sideline let's go here comes Amari Jones excellent speedster a lot of traffic to try to work moves across the 20-yard line Saturday night on ABC we've got Oklahoma State going on the road to Austin taking on number 12 Texas Cowboys have beaten the Longhorns four straight years this is a key game for the Longhorns but the last time Oklahoma State lost in Boston 2008 Colt McCoy who's the backup to Case Keenum right now in Washington led the way but Jordan Shipley on one catch Cosby on the other catch Mike Gundy was not pleased this was three line cutting Mullin the last time but he won that point he was 41 ok so add 11 warriors 52 now the force Dana Holgorsen was his offensive coordinator for a year Justin McMillan takes it out across 235 with a good run and this is what you need out of your quarterback you can punch in a mask couple times came up an easy touchdown need to get back in into the game sugar back keep it pick up a big first out early well offensive coordinator will Hall knows the bread butter that's wave don't beat the wave again and sit up downs right now y'all start you think the everybody I think just the guys but all 11 guys aren't often to do the up-downs I don't love that I think that you have to get involved to the team hurts the team that means a team gets punished after the Ben Newton penalty dustin McMillan launched SD some separation out there frigid ambient tolls but he was out of bounds off balance he threw the rock almost made an incredible throw and catch here hits off his hands and that's where you just don't like the ball to be thrown - when you're a wide receiver well he's a look he's a lefty moving to his right throws a back shoulder we mentioned last week back shoulder throws are an easier catch for the wide receiver if it's shoulder pads or higher that ball was a little low we'll haul we were really impressed we got a chance to talk to him yesterday he's got a vision for this offense they haven't shown it so far tonight he's trying to get them back on track I think he's got to do it with some completions one four sixes McMillan until that one but questing' was the football big hit by Diaw ta Anderson and the Cougars take over you should offense initially as a completion and a fumble and Houston takes over what I hit by Anderson this is similar to what we were talking about earlier this is a man play you're running crossers because you think it's man coverage if it's zone no problem but you can't keep running you got to run over there and stop or you're gonna get basically knocked in the chest just like this what you guys think you think this is a catch I'm not so sure officials have a tendency especially with players like this to give the benefit of the doubt to the receiver they don't want what what we focus told to me they don't want cheap fumbles so obviously this is being taken a look at after an Anderson's hint so mark Corbin one of those backup linebackers wants to fill in on an injury tonight for Terence edges stood recovered it this little drag route across that's that's like your final check this quarterback right and then hang right into Anderson if it were me I would say that's a football move I think so I think that's a completion and a fumble and it seems seemingly agree with that that is now 21 straight games for the Houston defense with a takeaway they have the take away or turnover construction helmet hard head go into work week olive oil towel Houstonians love this University of Houston and they gotta love what they didn't see in here dear King makes a smart play thrown it away turnover to 21st straight game up two scores on the road fourth game in 19 days the Houston coups have been impressing me here earlier they've had to lean on guys like so mark urban who made his season debut last week because edges that went out with an ankle injury they lost Jordan Carmouche a backup middle linebacker as well incomplete how his band was in his mild water Indira for a Patrick far bigger part and here a king kind of collided on that so they went back to that RPO Tulane brings a blitz off the slot they Emma missed exchange really is the running back that knocked one of the quarterbacks hand their pick their guy [Applause] why too late pressure coming in a timeout call by Houston I think they can about system after second we'll use our timeout 1325 remaining here in this first half occurred out coming up early in this game lunch yesterday as well thank you for that thank you for the hospitality here to lay that carving station was the truth delicious meat is happy hospitality here is a real thing coach Fritz is trying to build up a real environment here try to get him on the right right path print fan base fans in the city for universities safety blitz coming he makes a Miss and he's got the first down and he might have the record if he could get to the end zone just like that he has set the new FBS record 15 consecutive games with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown tear a king by himself in the history books with that 35 yard score for a touchdown any time you pass Timothy Tebow on a record book for college football you know you have done something special congratulations to tiara King in the University of Houston Cougars but what a play made a guy miss out ran a couple people and ran itself right to the top of the record books [Applause] I mean this was like a highlight tape DJ Hall is spying kind of comes on two delinquents from the safety position this is just like quit but I mean glad football might have been a touchdown sometimes there's there's the perfect defensive play call you have it on and you're just playing against the guy that is so special there's not much you can do about it just an athlete making a play we talked about Pat white earlier Tierra King is just an electrifying football player with the ball in his hands Carr had an incredible block down the field Tierra King made it all happen you see him celebrate on the sidelines massive moment in his life and also a big-time play for the Houston Cougars here in the second quarter and you can tell his teammates are aware only the record they're excited for him they're going down they're doing jumping jacks right now they're so fired up Lamar Jackson Marcus Mariota Tim Tebow incredible college football players Sierra King just ran right past him rates at the top that's an impressive list it's a very very impressive list I see Molly did a dirac King know much about that record then you just said her welcome you always wonder if players know that they're about to break a record I asked King about it he knew he acted like he didn't care on the phone with me but when he ran off on the sideline he definitely cared he was cheering he was celebrating and all of his teammates were chanting Tim Tebow's name oh he just broke that record at him well done to Bali I know they're college kids are trying to say the right things but Molly caught him right there by the Hollies right on top of it with the Tebow chant they do I mean that's a great way for his to motivate them to all awesome let's see if too late to get back into this thing we were talking about in this office it's a triple option feel to it it's not the Georgia Tech Army Air Force triple option but there are three options for justice Macmillan tour he's trying to evaluate in a very small amount of time how to make the right decision he's going to run it here and step on bounce near the 40 no I don't have that in my bag of tricks but it looked very similar to the first play of the game that Houston scored on and look like Justin Macmillan thought he might have a pass option off of that run mentioned earlier bread-and-butter of this offense is the running game they're trying to sprinkle in and get more consistent with the passing game slow start about a three and outs tonight but they got to get in rhythm they need some first downs the Tavian towles run out of bounds that time by Gleason Sprewell [Applause] sets up second out of three near midfield and off and a horse down we'll push it into Houston territory from Oregon feed this is what you need it can't there's no 21 point play 12 minutes left in the second quarter need to just keep stacking first downs here and get back in if they have a good culture in that locker room none of them are gonna quit let's see if they can continue to keep stacking there goes Dauphine again he's explosive and he gets chopped down after a good gain inside the 45 yard line picked up six on first down he has explosive and that was another good game you know five six yards but let me tell you about Dauphine in high school his 200-meter time was twenty point seven so if he busted out and gets loose it's going to sex being chased cuts it up the field passing blockers and cluttered he runs for another first down inside the 30 like the play call of will Hall you have two successful runs in a row you go with the naked bootleg quarterback keeper he's got guys open but he says you know what go block for me usually it's a go call hey go I could throw it to you but I think I could get more if I just run it you use you as a lead blocker third final timeout here for the University of Houston the two laying free waiver mounting a drive here that they need desperately will be back on the other side passion advance like these by awarding the live ma student section of the year the Tulane Green Wave student section already on the national watchlist here you go to espn.com /tphoe Bell to see how your school can compete forget the committee's attention by using hashtag live ma student section contest a lot of doctors and lawyers go to school here too right that's right girl Darius Brown while making men medicine he sets up first and goal for the Great Wave Darius Brad Wells their Pig back he's got great fish and he's good at inside zone outside zone sets up a nice block 25 yard gain this is their 4th 1st down which is big because it not only gets him a first down but it gives their defense a little bit of rest after all these three announce a halt McMillan baked it to Brad well and didn't see what was coming on the backside excellent work by this Houston defense Donovan butan and AB David uh niddy and Brad well has a walk-in touchdown if he gets the ball and he's disappointed these RPO run pass options it puts a lot on the quarterback to make good decision quickly to very quickly you read one guy if you read it wrong that's potentially gonna happen let's see if Jessica back bounce back here comes sip on hunterson cut it off for the touchdown first touchdown in two years for the junior from Mississippi Utterson with a Patterson Justin McLain on the first play didn't get the right read that sack that he gives the ball up the ton ursin and the extra effort to drive to get over the goal line to bring his team within two scores the need did not go down was able to keep his feet and allowed marriage Glover to add the extra point back to a two touchdown game a little more juice in the building on this Thursday at night when we finish up SportsCenter with John Anderson and Kenny made Titans and Jack's postgame reactions and analysis Trevor managed will detail how Notre Dame can stop the entrees swift that's probably George's best offensive weapon and then Kenny takes on Jorge Hospital ahead of his big flight at Madison Square Garden SportsCenter coming up after we're done at Tulane right here on ESPN and the ESPN half justin macmillan nine harden i like it that's on me [Applause] Hey this crowd has found some life Dana Holgorsen just chucked a Red Bull everybody's coming alive here on Thursday Night Football on ESPN we got a game here [Applause] Jeremy singleton and Marquess Stevens sit back to return for Houston second wave of the fair catch we'll set him up at the 25-yard line a look at tonight's PlayStation of Player impact rating a new metric created by ESPN sports analytics providing a 0 to 100 number for every player in college football to measure the effect of each player accounting for the scale of his teammates and his opponents on every play 97 for Tierra King and you see the streaks that he has extended and the records that he has set tonight he had no offense to PlayStation but that that's this should be a hundred based on what I've seen tonight dear King as explosive and exciting of a players I've seen he's done running throwing leaving good decision-making at that time Patrick Johnson with the initial penetration to knock down patrick bar this place is coming alive and what's been interesting here as the University of Houston has been very balanced 29 plays in a 14 pass plays with that 15 Rush trying to keep it balanced let the air do his thing on both throwing and running but this Tulane defense has to pick it up a little bit just kind of score on the other side they went with a huddle that time before break-in at deploying three receivers at the set going away from his arms I'm trying to find Patrick are on the perimeter third down coming up it's a big third down this Tulane team they say hey it's all about the ball third and long is a nice situation to get the ball year but pin your ears back rush the passer they play a lot of maid coverage don't want to have a penalty but you want to be as tight you'll be glued on to these guys as much as possible but this is a pass rushers dream third and long at home with a good crowd ting rolling throwing and it is caught for a first down five of six on third down tonight are the Cougars at Jeremy singleton the New Orleans native scoops that one up off the deck these haven't oculus ether down season either Matt third and 18 earlier third on lap in there these are big-time plays for the University of Houston Cougars now they go back to the tempo with Tierra King on the ground that seems to be a thing after a big play they are going with this Mayday Mayday quick count we mentioned dear King eyes downfield Superman on off-schedule paint plays the reason he was able to get outside is because Tulane had not one but two guys spying him just shows what how much they respect him as a scrambler as a runner but in that tie at that time it had a gate you know gave him time to make that throw down the field here comes car muscling ahead past the sticks for a first down we talked with Jack Curtis the defensive coordinator for Tulane and he talked about using two spies I had never heard a coach talked about using two spies on a quarterback like the Eric King I thought well I haven't been around football as long as you guys have you got a tenth heard much about that either we really had it's kind of a creative idea a lot of times people will all out blitz a quarterback like dear king or they'll just rush three and drop eight defenders coach Curtis basically said hey listen I've seen him terrorize both of those defensive ideas we're gonna try something new double spies try to keep him in the pocket make him earn it dear King has earned it tonight might have three spies if he had a PlayStation impact or anything of a hundred while trip you get to get the triple digits you get the two to three spots [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] vii play this Drive Dana Holgorsen has been deciding when he wants to use tempo than when he wants to slow it down here clearly on this Drive clearly he's trying to slow down the tempo halfway through the second quarter under pressure got rid of it - Christian Trahan who spits for a first down just an incredible play by tiara King he's got somebody draped all over they just delivers a dime picks up another first down I'm surprised I didn't go with a quick tempo here this is what they've been doing slow it down 45 kids crusher artemis deliver to make it plain once again 97 rating that's an impressive throw there by dr king showing out everything that he can do here in the first ever we do have a two lane player down on the field step aside with just over seven minutes to play here in the first half he'll go for $1,000 throws it right down the center that absolutely loses his mind he's gonna head straight to the food's a night tackle the pile on Dan you just made magic happen he is our football person of the week right there football person of the week that's a high honor on the Thursday night show you got a big check they're gonna take it to a big bank but that's a big night for that football person of the week empty set for tiara King on first down taken off again and good yardage inside the 30 they've done six to set up second down and four 25 yard bomb there by the kid with the sick lettuce and well it was once we realized it was I think a lettuce fit really well is good was a potential conversation that it looked like a middle-aged lady from the booth but it was just a hat and long hair that kid the boots right you said he's gonna he's gonna own the boot tonight around the corner kids frequent speaking of frequent dr.king has frequented the skies and it has worked out another first down for the university there that's another walk in touch now that one would have been Cole McGowan what happens over the RPL everybody bites and then just opens up there behind the line behind the linebackers and that's just another walk in cutter they call it an RPO gets a run pass option some of the people like I brought the runners they're blocking and they think it's a run they don't know if it's gonna be a runner past the receivers they're running pass routes so really the decision if it's a run or a pass isn't made until the quarterback decides am I actually gonna hand this off or am I gonna pull it out of the running back to Pelle and decide to throw it it's very tough to get a read on that as a defender King looking for the end shot at Stephenson incomplete with a little bit of heat on that throw he had a touchdown pass to mark West Stephenson on a similar play last week it's Washington State it worked last week because there were two safeties and marques Stevenson was able to get in the middle of the field that time there was just one safety in the middle of the field too close to mark West Stevenson and just too tight of a window to fit it into excellent first nap offensively for Houston 11th play of this series is a run for Patrick car down to the 15-yard line really impressed with these runners Patrick Carr and Kyle Porter for Houston we've been talking a lot about the air King tonight as we should what a player but Patrick car just how it sets up these blocks it's only 205 pounds but when you watch you run he's a powerful water you guess is more like 225 pounds one of the wheel route [Applause] dancing still looking downfield wide open keep Foreman was sitting by himself that King could on connect with him and it's worked out there's so much magic there so much loose if you miss from dear King well they're getting pressure out of this too late defense work for it back there but those are sometimes the hardest aren't they Matt when a guy's you stand in her you know what it is as a right-handed thrower when you're running fast to your right that spiral that ball will fade a little bit on you you got to follow through like you're rounding a track like a track-and-field but that one sound right Dalton Witherspoon but you laid us all that drive drive on a big plays all for naught because it was 31 yarder great hold just kind of lifted his head up a little bit hit it fat Michael black who has been in every single booth I've ever played in kicking specialist and Arena League said he got a little lazy there which might be accurate sometimes on these short once you kind of lift up early which causes your foot to rise which means you hit it fat which means you pull it just like a golf driver just like things like that but the University of Tulane now all of a sudden has big momentum after a Miss and that's why field goals matter Oh thin and what do you mean the kicker got lazy what does that mean he just pulled out of it early you didn't stay down in it whatever you pull out you lift up naturally you you tend to pull it a little bit yeah the kid on that during the break there hit it for 25o big six more yards around 40 duck feet we talked about his explosiveness and he takes it out across the 30 for a first down that's happened to me before by the way it's happened at the head of military the greatest of all time it can happen anybody but this is the type of thing that can really get to lane Tulloch four minutes left and a half get on the board making a one score game and too late gets the ball to start the second half as well so we get a penalty marker here for procedure panel [Applause] well sorry offense number 65 five-yard penalty first down with penalty against Tulane tonight princes 59 years of age an expansive resume that began as a GA for his college head coach Ron Randleman who's in attendance tonight watching his quarterback Justin McMillan duct down and get some of that penalty yardage back really nice job by Justin McMillan he's trying to get his troops going here we mentioned all the penalties the false start penalties three already tonight it's really been an issue for this Tulane team this season [Applause] 41 penalty is accepted in three plus games against Tulane so far they've had to shuffle some guys on the offensive line and we're talking about smart guys these are Tulane guys I just think it's a matter of concentration coming up volunteering and petrina or officers in the United States Army Derrick's now a battalion noncommissioned ah misirlou katrina's now a retention noncommissioned officer he lived in South Carolina Kentucky Texas Alabama and Michigan before finally set up settling back down in Texas he knows what it's like to move in move fast try to make friends try to make good teammates who you arrived the Tulane 5 days before their opener last year that took over midway through the season as the QB unable to connect on the perimeter with titanium towles it brings up fourth down it's really too bad they had him open head time had him open I thought he thought he was gonna go break on a little bit of a deeper level than he did he kind of went on and out as opposed to a post McMillan overshot him thanks to his parents for their incredible service to our country obviously but that is not great for Tulane they had momentum with the missed field goal now the ball goes back to the University of Houston who didn't have a lot of trouble moving the ball in their last Drive Brian Wright in his fourth punt that a good average so far the liner to Bryson Smith oh boy he lost the football he was battling for it right there with a 2-lane special teams player and Larry clients and they're gonna rule that bricen Smith rescued that ball boy that was a simultaneous run at the ball with Bryant and Smith but Willie Frick said it's all about the ball it's got to be all about the ball tonight they got it they got a steal one back that was a missed opportunity but a great play to get that ball loose chase crucian reaching in there Bob chase kerschen he got beat early on that touchdown trying to do everything he can to make up for it the thing I like about coach Fritz the ball is not just a joke he got a manikin out of the building because it was holding the ball recklessly he literally hit the manikin out of the building because it didn't have good ball security ball security job security almost came up with one there for Tulane but not in the last University Houston has bought 35 and an inside scream for Trayvon Bradley [Applause] well Adam Houston's running back Kyle Porter is in the medical tent right now he looked like he was in serious pain I'm told he is questionable to return with back spasms well he was huge that second-story crime for Houston had a big gate and then eventually punched it in from one yard out yeah Dana Holgorsen told us he's one of the smartest players that he's ever coached obviously a great runner it's Patrick cars show right now the backfield in no hurry right now inside a 10 on the play clock with a Stampin design run the Eric King patiently gets about two yards as we dump inside of two minutes to play to Lane still has two timeouts I'd be curious if they use one here they would get the ball back to start the second half as well you see on third down this wholesale substitution of too late mention how deep they are a d-line they gotta be careful that they don't quick count them again on one of these third downs and catch up with 12 guys on the field King deep shot for Stephenson overthrown that stops the clock with a minute and a half to go to Lane gets to save those two timeouts it'll get the ball back with an opportunity to score before half-time two lane defense picks up the two lane offense now they're given another shot to score before half-time Macmillan might take advantage of it they get the ball in the second half this is a big turn of events here but Dane Roy is gonna punt it away as you said earlier catch to return meant back there for too late yeah there's two returns back there because Dan Roy can put the ball all over the yard with that incredible control with the Aussie wolf style you're trying to save the Big Bounce Amari Jones from the 11 there goes number 11 into space to penalty markers are thrown as Amari Jones takes it near midfield Danny Boy involved in the scrum there at the end big time returned two flags down though normally not good for the return to this would be the longest return of Jones's career on a punt it was 37 but we'll see what both markers are about here during the return illegal block in the back receiving team number 37 the goal first down so that negates the 37 yard return we're getting ready for halftime let's check in with Matt berry in the studio [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] yeah the say the least humidity at a hundred percent the good news is they got ceiling fans everywhere down here hey a ceiling fan business is booming does New Orleans for sure walk field and brought Justin McMillan and that was knocked down by some mark proven stepping into a big role tonight he's already got a fungal recovery in this game knocks that one down really a nice play out routes are gonna be open right now on this two minute drive but you got a miss outside you can't like he's throwing there to number 11 you can't put it in between the one in the one you got a Miss outside has incredible coverage no timeouts for the University of Houston keep it on the ground here with Darius Brad Wilson clocks gonna continue to bury but that line yards on that play before the grants come ahead see how Willie Fritz and will halt the offensive coordinator play this came out swinging on the first down took a shot see if they can pick anything up now you got to be smart with it you don't want to give them the ball back here right now you can wait until you get under 40 seconds cuz Houston would not be able to stop the clock you can run a play if you wanted to you can take a timeout right now if you wanted to thirty nine-year-old will Hall hired in December I've already taken the headset off that usually means a draw yep keeping a conservative nothing there for Grad well and that'll take us to halftime too late we'll get the ball to start the second half big score for Tulane to cut it back to within two touchdowns here in this second quarter it's interesting there at the end of half I like watching offensive coordinators Minds words their first down they throw see if we can pick anything up maybe we go for it we didn't all right let's bleed the clock out let's get to the half let's get to the locker room and figure out how we come back from this to score deficit [Music] only about a 350 mile trip from Houston to New Orleans is a big game these two teams in conference for recruiting a whole lot of the line tonight and Amari Jones with an excellent return he'll take it out across the 40-yard line the sensu lato good field position as we get a look at tonight's game flow brought to us by progressive and churn up the Aaron Kagan the subject of such well they started it out with the first play of the game untouched stand-up touchdown but he's been doing it all whether it's been a trick play a run pass option the designed run or even just make it work off schedule to Wayne's had a few times where they had him in the backfield and he's just made something out of nothing [Applause] there is Bradwell on first down bali mcgrath moments ago with Dana Holgorsen Houston because dear King broke Tim Tebow's touchdown record what did he do well in that first half I thought he managed it pretty good you know just getting us in the right play whether it's a run player doing the RP O's on the perimeter you know he's saying Abby's in control right now I like where his on how did you find success mixing up the tempo in the first half well as you know we were going fast and we were scoring but our defense started kitten wore out so they're in the second quarter I tried slowing down a little bit just to try to get the glove it seemed like a lasted forever but we wanted to kind of control the clock just a little bit all right Thank You coach okay almost two hours after opening on us when we started to say enough well it's really importantly talking about complimentary football sometimes when you go really fast as an offense it puts more stress on your defense so Dana Holgorsen clearly taking about both sides of the ball four games in 19 days you have to do that very smart decision with that tempo slowing it down it's about to be a fourth in about an inch here though to start this third quarter Darius Bradwell just a little bit shy in the offense still on the field out for that short both lone mcfillin will hand it off for Bradwell look like he had enough for the first down and indeed he does he gets a little extra push from his tight end will Wallace little push push shades off the USC days if it's fourths of an inch if you can't pick that up as a team you got to really look yourself in the mirror coach fritz going for that setting a tone early get a first down see if they can get on the board here make this a one score game [Applause] play-action fake mcmillan deep shot for the speed art we told you [Music] [Applause] right back to the deep shot a 48-yard putter for Justin McMillan the Moody what a play to to go up there and stack that thing Allah Randy you got mom what a catch right there I said it in half they live by the sword die by the sword in the first half they went for it a bunch of times they couldn't connect here early they go for it get on the board extra point is beautiful one point score here came in the piggies Darnell movies on the outside just cleared it out for the inside to take an hour out the beaches guy McMillan Giza Mashhad moment of truth go up for the ball your team needs your touch down the goal post founded in 1718 by French colonists man magnifique how about that little fun fact for a year a Thursday night football yes PN one score game in the American caucus I'll give you a fun fact Darnell Mooney that's 23 straight games in a row with a catch and this one was good for a touchdown Houston out to the 25-yard line of the touch back and we go down to the field and Molly McGrath well I asked Tulane head coach Willie Fritz the question of the night how do you better defend D Eric King he said I don't know it's hard because he is so quick once he got going he completely changed the game but he said that his pass rushers are taking way too long he wants them to be quicker off the edge he was also really frustrated with a lot of missed tackles in that first half but despite that he said his message at the half is mostly positive he likes his team's effort they just have to clean a lot of things up on defense this guy's been around a long time Willie Fritz started as a GA for his college head coach and his alma mater division to Pittsburg State in Kansas was a high school coach in Kansas went to junior college four years at Blinn Junior College in Texas where he won a couple of JUCO national titles worked his way to the FCS level of NFB s transition Georgia Southern into an FBS school and has taken Tulane to a bowl game and a bull victory he's a man that they haven't experienced a whole lot of here in New Orleans with the Green Wave five four wins in 126 years McMath not great but could they build something special here with coach fritz they're hoping to do so second and short here for University of Houston and the leader of rush TDs and past two days in consecutive games dear Jane he's got mobile car in the backfield weren't expected to see him but Kyle Porter is out with back spasms now marques Stevenson he's got a first down into Tulane territory dragged about by Larry Brooks who had a couple of picks last week was a good ball there been a pediments Drive letter brought with it a little bit Martin was Stephenson got loose after the catch 20 yards toward four yards down field goes for 20 this one has chance Fiera King gets close to the sticks down at the 36 yard line they talked about diarchy not taking his minions a lot of designed runs tonight conference game usually you let him play 22 days a restaurant only one game in the next three weeks coming up for Houston PJ Hall made the hit on Tierra King that time he was a little bit slow to get up after the play will step aside and ensure for strength and energy [Music] nothing like starting off our nude production meeting earlier today with some beignets yay yay yay the only thing better than eating them and tasting them asain beignet the amazing body disagrees saying it is fantastic you said you needed better things went down in the tummy in a fantastic fashion that man right there is housed in room 108 let's see you don't get the white powdered sugar in your just be like it just blends in yeah it blends in perfectly that's smart let me tell you about venues that's Wolford [Applause] [Music] there is Patrick car on the maneuver it's out by Patrick Johnson to stack them up for no gain second down coming up and nice tackle by Pat Johnson their physical player oh whoa well we've got multiple multiple Wilford Brimley's here tonight we're talking about a facial declaration by these two old men who probably live in New Orleans and enjoy the hell out of their lives taking in a great game a or an American conference on a Thursday night I'm feeling Houston on the right New Orleans on the Left Oh cuz the cowboy hat there on the right I got the color scheme baby and the party on the left despite the Eric King looking for Stevenson nearly intercepted by Larry Brooks he had two interceptions last week against Missouri State first too late player wood to fix in a game in five years the last guy to do it Perry Nickerson we got drafted by the Jets last year now with the Seahawks pretty good this crowd is excited third and long looks like tight man coverage again for Tulane can they keep the air King inside the pocket that'll be the big question [Applause] the twist punch Elaine got it off to Terry mark but he gets swallowed up at the 36 yard line for no gain Jalen Boudreau led the charge for the blue jersey Green Wave would be about a 53 yarder from here mr. 31 earlier I assume Dana's not gonna let him hand it wait a minute honey were you just disappointed to see a putter run onto the field was that first well whenever your kicker misses one early sometimes you gotta let him get back on a saddle and hop back up on the horse especially with a 53 order game boy here though gonna try to put on deep career long for thought Witherspoon came two weeks ago 46 was his career losses a little bit extended if he were to try the field goal and I think he missed a 48-yarder last week against Y up last week against Washington State in this one when you got an Aussie that can put the ball into the corner like that with incredible coverage pin them at the 3 Justin McMillan has a lot of food he has to drive to make this anti-gay 33-yard punt to pin up he got Chu Muhammad great running back Sam Ehlinger outstanding quarterback for Oklahoma State in Texas that's Saturday night 7:30 ABC I know you like Michael Dixon though too great punter for the Seattle Seahawks out of Texas great series on top twenty four to nine Texas on top but the Pokes have had the better go of in as of late they won the last four meetings Texas comes in as the ranked team but they've lost five straight in Austin to Oklahoma State that's the longest streak by any team going into Austin and waiting in big 12 play long field in front of Justin McMillan and Amari Jones will that one will pick up poor Tulane's trying to get something going here when you're backed up inside the 5-yard line really one of your goals is to get outside the ten yard line so that if you do have to punt you got enough room for your normal operation technically it's outside the five but outside the tent is also great they've been able to accomplish that with their first play can't go backwards here if you're hooking the punt which no team is trying to do Amari Jones a little bit shaken up as he went to the sidelines so Brad well visited the game next to McMillan McMillan team said he's got some space they want to get that close first down he picks it up Gleason springwells transom down until 11 we were talking a lot about dr king being an athlete but just to macmillan here has proved on numerous occasions whoever he he can hit the edge you can pick up the yards and for the Tulane Green Wave never backed up back to the ground game and Brad well the killin 6-3 205 pound grad transverse eternal Texas originally started his career at LSU only a couple of appearances in three seasons so former as the starting quarterback last year midway through went five and one is a starter to end the season he's 72 it is starting the career well to move the chains to the 29-yard line this baby has a chance safe drive and that is something they're gonna have to continue to do here this has been a beautiful Drive back up at the three pick up a couple first downs get you right back in the game McMillan to Lane is built on one of the football [Applause] James the Green Wave have ran for at least 100 yards they had nearly 300 on the ground a week ago pic billing tax on 26 more well it's been zone read zone read zone read here they call a pass McMillan brats contained he's the lefty scrambles to his lesson taken on my own I'd expect a shot play at some point coming up on this drive they've been running the ball very effectively though Bradwell picks up about five on this play I like Justin bacon first half was he great three of ten kept slinging one into the half came out reenergized picking up some big-time totally got four completions on the game to a good four scores down the field on deep balls that's impressive I will say Willie Fritz he just kind of exudes confidence I don't know what he said at halftime but I got a head magic imagine it was calm here's your shot play McMillan hoping for one look indeed Danja Tavian towles was the intended target a little long for him this place was about to mean rough to one of those plays where he get a little bit too [Music] potential powder here for Justin Macmillan how will he bounce back man on the run made some big plays saws guy well it's over 0 for 7 on 3rd down let's see what they do here right up the gut Corey P using some of that explosive speed to the 30-yard line for a first down and going back to that missed opportunity on that pass that second down pass that is a great play call by offensive coordinator will Hall I actually recognize that play Jared Goff hit Cooper Cup on a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings on that same play last year 9th play the drive coming it is delayed by a flag [Applause] [Music] six penalties against Tulane tonight the tight end Tyra James phone for that one well they said that we don't want the wave to beat the wave these false start penalties they gotta fix them if they want a chance to win this game first and 15 is not what you're doing that's the fourth Tulane false start tonight Tyra James kind of tapped the tackle maybe as a signal and then it in front of us the tight tight squeeze with the fans right up against us that's not gonna make Willie Fritz happy [Applause] the offensive linemen are doing a terrible job here I think we all agree with that takes a special individual to plant there have to sit completely still while man's trying to rip your head off McMillan was looking downfield it maids the pressure but could not find will Wallace a lot of people in the crowd yelling it Justin McMillan to set his feet and believe it got a little bit anxious there on the roll out on the naked boot misses guy William Wallace you just got to get will Wallace a chance here and really this is just disappointing for Tulane because they had these guys on the run Houston's defenders had their hands on their hips Holgersson talked about that at halftime with Molly he was a little bit worried about his fatigue his defense that was a scream set up wit space for Jalen mcclewsky it is an incomplete forward pass but thrown at the feet of his attendants our theme for 4:14 we're Justin McMillan so far tonight third down and 20 just trying to give him the field goal range here and and will Hall offensive coordinator calls Justin McMillan over to the sideline it's almost like a manager and baseball walking out to the pitcher's mound like hey settle down you've missed you wide-open guys settle down relax [Music] blitz coming from the Cougars McMillan against crusher pros at team moody was the intended target with the closest man to it was Alexandra Duke getting into the backfield on Justin McMillan McMillan took a shot to the sternum it's another way to settle down I will say this sometimes as a quarterback you take a big hit that settles you right down [Applause] frig started the game here the 61 guard bomb a little inconsistent that he was the starting quarterback his junior and senior year of high school I know you like that a rotation on it try to get it inside the 20 but let's see where they end up spike and it'll be right at the 20 yard line so 20 yard hunts on the nets [Music] the Red Cross in preparation response and recovery efforts in the United States and down in the Bahamas can go to WWE as org slash ESPN or call 1-800 Red Cross to donate now obviously folks here in New Orleans understand and sympathize completely with what's happening down on the coast and down in the Bahamas and now the tropical storm in Melda dumped about 40 inches of rainfall down in Texas it was a little bit north of Houston's campus really Beaumont got the worst of it Houston was not able to travel it's banned to this game tonight because of the brutal weather that they're dealing with right now if you can't help out please do again redcross.org / ESPN to donate now Bulba car picks up 14 yards for the Cougars who lead it by seven and four with six minutes to play in the third quarter the time I see those images and videos I just get heartbroken that if you'll help us but you can help by donating the Red Cross I hope you do 40 inches of rain more we're down to the Gulf Coast Bulba car trying to stretch it to the edge and he gets brought down quickly the jump I go beat the wall bomba car is in the game he would think because Kyle Porter is done car is a senior from Austin Texas he's only played in one game out of the first three was against Oklahoma he was a red shirt candidate this year but now he's playing in his 32nd career game so he was gonna redshirt as a senior he became a United States citizen before his freshman year of college escape Ward's or Liberia at age five with his mother became a US citizen before he started his career at Houston there goes Patrick car sets up third down and short coming up for the Cougars Dana Holgorsen is not scared to redshirt a senior either he'll get another year out of a player incredible story from boba but also he loved the transfer port or under a little bit of a hurry up here a little bit of tempo on third down King designed one a lot of pressure against stuff and he's not by Patrick Johnson up big Tulane stop place is coming alive a little bit it's almost like coach fritz went into halftime and said hey there girl run hurry up we have to hurry up as well on the defensive side of the ball they were ready on that quick tempo on third down that looked like Tecmo ball when you would pick the guy other guys play the Green Wave was all over it Pat Johnson on the play talked about him earlier in the game this is a guy that got here he was 200 maybe 210 pounds he's 235 pounds now good physical play good open field tackle on one of the college football's most electric players in dear King now Dane Troy with only one return man back in Jacob Robertson will deliver that's a big boy bomb behind the 10 what a turn I'm gonna save that is absolutely magical for the plan and for Des Moines they had too much others the entire first half they put one back there the ball goes over his head perfect bounce perfect coverage good for the University of Houston Patrick Johnson got the pressure and the Dean boy delivered excellent turn great save by Terry mark and it's down inside the 10 being ourselves he also had some very stern words with quarterback Justin McMillan told him to mentally move on from that last drive McMillan looked defeated on the sidelines hanging his head and he told his teammates that was all my fault second consecutive drive for McMillan inside his own 10 and he's gonna want it we'll take it beyond the 10-yard line butpain enforcement Walker McMillan and you gotta have amnesia as a quarterback he had two huge missed opportunities for big plays in the passing game down the field and you saw him let it he let it affect him and then missed a couple gimmies afterwards great advice by offensive coordinator will halt gotta love his accountability - all right what - David and Nene off the edge and Nene came untouched he was a big hog defensively last week he had two sacks against Washington State yeah he is a natural pass rusher he's not very physical in the run but he is a pass rusher the Darryl Campbell mystic Colebrook I think he thought the ball is gonna be out now I'm in fairness to the defensive end [Applause] that's the fourth Houston sack of the night penalties six of them of in falsehoods just can't understand for the life of me false starts I mean this is Tulane you got smart players you got guys from transfer students for Brown and Columbia Virginia it's really not that difficult the snap count it's on one it's on to you're not going to be Houston with this kind of penalty situation [Applause] [Music] instant up-downs right now Wow I think the strength coach for the Tulane Green Wave coach spear is probably losing his mind right now Spears the director of strength and conditioning for this team he really gets after these guys in the weight room he and Willie Fritz are the rest of the staff can not be happy with this lack of execution play what do you call the what do you call its third forever you're on the 2 yard line 3 yard line villain two flowing under pressure gotta get out the end zone fires deep sideline ski and it is pause that's which is going mad line two a coach's son jaylen mcclutzky water playing the last time they connected was a touchdown this time a massive first down for the Tulane Green Wave after their being backed up with a great punt without Brad well with a good run for four on first down boy jaylen mccleskey to the rescue his four steer with too late yes first too late touchdown and with his dad on the sidelines the defensive backs coach Jay a couple of times tonight for the Greenway that's a dagger to the defense you got him inside the five with that third and forever situation and pounces later first I wasn't sure if they just wanted to go tempo or from this side line you can tell if it was a close call on that sideline don't give him a chance to review it hurry up Mayday Mayday run a play quickly looks like they just want to go with tempo get get into a rhythm right here with their running game not much there for Macmillan this ranch steward on the backfield and force him down 3 27 yard dagger out of your own endzone you mention grant Stewart he's the guy with the long hair down there it normally plays nickel he's everywhere it leads the conference with tackles came into this game with 28 tackles 14 of them came against Oklahoma [Applause] now paint breaking tackles down to the 25 at the end a 34 yard gain this 218 Greenway it's usually tempo and pick it up somewhere yardage and this is the 200 meter champion high school medley 127 200-meter once for Tulane track and field as well he gets the carry again cutting his way for about four yards and that should take us to the end of quarter number three is the third time that pretty lucky so far with some tie trucks going to quarter number four quarter scored a touchdown to cut it to within seven they ran for over a hundred and thirty yards in quarter number three they could get past the penalties are in pretty good shape for sure and they know that Houston Willie Fritz knows that Houston has played four games in 19 days they're pushing that tempo getting back to their bread and butter run game second down Darius grad well ahead close to the sticks down to the Dana Holgorsen told me at the half his defense was getting tired I have to tell you it feels warmer down here than it kicked off because there's no wind right now it's about 83 degrees and there is Pedialyte pickle juice hydration gummies all over these sidelines so these teams are battling the hungry and the exhaustion late in the game a tour is created for babies perfected by athletes who are dehydrated not a sponsor yet maybe soon [Applause] [Music] anybody just in there took some category third quarter for an opportunist bounce-back in a fantastic fashion sees that the University of Houston defense might be a little bit fatigue keeps it to himself rolls out spots into the end zone one extra point away from a tie game here in the fourth quarter how about this Tulane team Willie Fritz has been mentally tough 28 to 7 overcoming penalties that they've done to themselves getting away from the passing game going back to the bread and butter so read stuff great third quarter 10 play 93 yard drive starting at their own 7 9 of the 10 plays were runs including the game tying score great play and watch sports and import by infinity and power the drive Tulane Stadium hosted three of the first nine Super Bowls including too late football games and the Sugar Bowl is also home to the Saints in the first seven years of their franchise Superdome is where Tulane used to play this is the fifth year since Gilman Stadium opened up and it is loud right now after a 21 to nothing Tulane run to tie this game at 28 of piece and now we get to watch Derek King and the Houston offense go to work coca-cola invites you to share a coke while tuning in to this upcoming match up on Saturday as Oklahoma State faces number 12 Texas at Austin Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC and the ESPN Justin McMillan got chewed up by his coach on the sidelines will halt the offensive coordinator and he rolled them three yards to tie it by huge third quarter for Tulane and now dear a cake in a tie game goes to work it's an longest drive of the season for Justin McMillan it's his ninth rushing touchdown now to the Tulane Green Wave drive delayed the offense Brooklyn King fires and he connects with Keith Corbin first down on a gain of 12 what an answer the division answer I mean that is not an easy throne between the linebackers before the safeties just did not flinch didn't even blink dear King if Tulane is gonna win this game tonight dear King is gonna make [Applause] why a big hole and turn it into an 11-yard gain their tooth wouldn't place back-to-back for the coupe's with Kyle Porter out Patrick Carnes got to step up properly will get more carries than he's used to getting 9 carries in his season debut last week remember he missed the first two games as he was coming back from a knee scoped pile Porter is out with back spasms it's going to be patrick cars the lead back and he's their lead back leading rusher of last year this is not new territory for him Shane creamer cannot escape the second wave of the Green Wave loss of one is will Harper made the initial contact something about a gang tackle get the defense fire [Applause] seven guys in the screen there at the end of the play that is what the defensive coordinator near me singleton down on the field for the Houston Cougars getting checked out will step aside that honors great teachers across the country you can learn more CFT extra yard you can follow that or search the hashtag extra yard a week Nick Anderson just had a tackle for Tulane teacher to help push me in high school was my 11th grade AP US history teacher olívia McCourt on she always stayed on me she was a dynamic lecture and I never liked lectures but she did a great job of preparing us for the AP exam she stayed on me I stayed after class that was like one of my hardest classes but she pushed me to be a better student because she told me she'd expect a lot out of me and I ended up getting a 90 out of that class but I felt good about that 90 even though it was a low eight because I worked really really hard for it and she just hang on talking me some more [Applause] on second down here comes the Houston offense once again about four yards on the game for Patrick R and a nice tackle by chase Kirsch getting there the safety coming up with the big stick not sure that's his name [Music] [Applause] use the god guys on the field yeah I was gonna say Houston picking up where they left off in the first the two latest force to use its first it's really smart it's really smart good job by Dana Holgorsen using tempo there gets them to call timeout [Music] some key group of five matchups coming up this weekend tomorrow night Boise State top 20 UCF goes on the road at Pittsburgh SMU is three-and-oh for the first time since 1984 North Carolina hosting Eli drink wits the new head coach at Appalachian State American Conference opener tonight between the Green Wave and the Cougars on third down Patrick car stack up pushes ahead for the first down to the 41 hit at about six yards meet at 11 picked up an extra five with knee drive [Music] a news here blood Tulane after second charge it's gonna be their second in the first two and a half minutes of this fourth quarter the last drive it seemed like they had to temp up and figure it out on the defensive side of the ball Dana Holgorsen keeps with the pressure keeps with the tempo in the last time Tulane had and I show you this I mean this I think they had 17 players on the field at one point I think it's time get them off the field again and you say 17 players you're actually right because they are doing wholesale substitutions it's hot it's humid there's good tempo going Dana Holgorsen is used tempo as a weapon tonight stealing two lanes type timeouts this is gonna be interesting to see who toughs it out we're in the fourth quarter now we mentioned it a couple times Houston playing its fourth game in the FIR in that in a 19 day stretch to open their season while too late which is I would say probably the deeper team especially on defense comparing these two teams tonight on their home field at a humid night who's gonna be standing at the end of the night when we've got right now a tie game well in Dana Holgorsen knows how banged up his linebacker core is and so he's using tempo selectively he's not using it all the time but he's using me at the right time Bulba bar a little leg drive they're trying to hold on to the vocal as the Green Wave try to strip it away 7 yards on the run that's an incredible tactic one person hold him up the other person coming in trying to get the paw possessions are key right now pressure from the green wave came taking a deep shot one-on-one and it's incomplete sidelines there Jalen Monroe will already had a kick tonight with good coverage on the intended target great coverage by James Monroe sideline is an extra defender squeezes the wide receiver to the sideline there's no room for the throw turn around - I mean that piece perfect it's perfect coverage on second down not his biggest third down this is third down it's a big one trying to stop mobile car breaks one tackle he spins ahead for the first town Jeffrey Johnson could not wrap him up in the backfield it's a six-yard gain mobile car sometimes is used as like a short yardage back big strong physical met a guy in the hole said nope spins off it gets the first play fake king shot endzone for the lead and it's King completes when roll had the coverage again this time grabbing Cole McGowan again really good coverage [Applause] in their jail in Monroe says and me on the other side vote Pete is a very very good corner cover corner number 26 you know your that you know it means when you have a really good cover corner on one side tear the guy on the other side you're gonna get some action Tulane brings pressure again on that one it's Patrick bar back to the line of scrimmage change sometimes you might tell they just tried that play sometimes you have a receiver he Sprint's down runs a go-round the DP is tired now the other guy he just ran to go Rams in a row you can step out on offense you can't step out on defense King looking and he's wrapped up and brought down by Nick Anderson you just heard him talk about his 11th grade teacher Nick Anderson comes up with a massive play on third down dear King had a lot of time the coverage was impeccable he put it down try to go for a run Nick Anderson said no doubt mr. record holy big field goal try from 48 this would tie the longest attempt of Dalton Witherspoon's career this to try to give them the lead Essam Haven warm-ups he has a big break the Tulane crowd is coming alive good snap good hold missed it wide left [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] big mess there but wanna stand by the Tulane defense we got one here in New Orleans spend 21 consecutive points for Tulane a second Miss from Dalton Witherspoon has given Tulane the football at its own 31 yard line and Justin McMillan with a chance for the lead and around they give it to the speedster Amari Jones bounced near midfield excellent one to open the drive [Applause] 17 yards just feels like two Lane has juice right now Houston might be saved a little [Music] pick up some things out here in the fourth book and I love the play called Pat Houston's tired make him run sideline to sideline with the outside run keep an eye on number 11 they call him the super back it's Amari Jones again slip in through tackles penalty marker thrown back there midfield Amari Jones down near the 20 ball out to check the marker 42 yard run but we'll see if it stands [Applause] like porting Dublin got tagged for that holding penalty negating the 32 yards sprint by Amari Jones inside a 10 to play Jones was pointed out to us by joke often the co-defensive coordinator for Houston find number 11 the super back scott speedy shed a tackle there at the end of that thing it's now nine offensive penalties against Tulane Darius Bradwell gets that penalty yardage back down to midfield and down the valley McGrath we go team is gas drive offensive lineman Justin Murphy ran to the sidelines and was throwing up their body language looks exhausted and defeated but their coaches are begging for more from them if this team looks absolutely exhausted at him for games of nineteen days we can't stress that enough and in the fourth quarter and this human heaven is what we'll call it too late yeoman Stadium it's gonna be a tough final nine minutes here for everybody strong alliteration McAfee McMillon fires dangerous paths nearly intercepted trying to fight Darnell moody but Deonte Anderson the man the Texas native the transfer from Ole Miss nearly got him when we mentioned tips and overthrows can be a killer this ball is up for grabs looked like there might have been some funky ball of handling action in the backfield really that plate just looked like a disaster from the get-go Justin McMillan quarterback is actually rubbing his hands on the turf right now like like he's got too much sweating or something's on his hands you you guys talked about a few midnight 120% humidity here Tulane much better on third down after a shaky start there's the three-man rush McMillan to the sticks for a first down he bites at avian towles found some dryness on the hands and deliver the ball right between the numbers on a third down to pick up a first and listen you see these quarterbacks where a quarterback towel Justin McMillen's can one on behind him he's been grabbing it but sometimes that quarterback towel you mention it gets wet it's no good it's actually worse you throw your hands on that towel your hands are even more wet than they were before you put them on there in the first place could use a ShamWow at this point back to the ground game they've been so successful under Willie Fritz in a Pagar antarious battle at one bowls towards the sticks a little bit shine in the thirties you just like your fundamentals you lack the technique you've seen it a lot in the tackling Department for the University of Houston defense a lot of broken tackles for the straight off I can tell bran well one city he's a senior he's their big back he's got good vision feed main thesis right back to him not enough for the first down serious Brad well over a hundred yards rushing tonight he had three of those games and last season when he ran for over 1,100 yards just the six 1,000 yard rusher in Tulane history and that run was only like a yard and a half but it was second and one so that's combination body blow body blow body blow now they bring it Dauphine into that pile two team for the Houston defense there to stack up up Willie Fritz talked to us yesterday about how big of a game it felt like this was for Tulane you get the Thursday night primetime slot national TV a program trying to get on the rise they haven't been a back-to-back pool games since 79 and 80 this is a big year for Willie Fritz had the Green Wave they also are very confident in their conditioning they had him all carry around the calendar water knowing it was going to be a hot night helicoptering is Amari Jones spun down he thought no coming up here the last seven years two lanes biggest comeback was two touchdowns 14 points minimum Weiss they trail ends 21 tonight before coming back to tie this game a big third down to try to stay on the field with the offense and try to take the lead and this is always interesting you're outside the 25 but you're inside the 30 as a quarterback you cannot take the sack this is this is the very edge of Merrick lovers field goal range blitz from Houston Macmillan for Moody [Applause] darnell moody is not able to come up with it but sometimes when you're running for four you're running fast that's a tough catch a little armbar by the defender what a throw they're still in it they still have a chance 44-yard try for Merrick lover this would tie this rule against bunker two weeks ago step up for your team in the fourth quarter the first time your team has been on ESPN to knock down a 47-yard kick what a big moment for that kick great snap great hold great rotation Hill off his toe a little bit so it's on the right side of room we love those types of reps for the brand I'll tell you that if he's gonna give a foo-foo right over top of the upright we will take it no inch left behind when it comes to field goal 128 six minutes left by the way a field goal that is above or below the crossbar or inside and outside the uprights is reviewable ticks that go above the uprights are not reviewable kicks so the call on the field is the one that counts as close as that was what a moment for Merrick Blum has we had a game with no controversy no this is it this is a controversy build crew no controversy here that kid is he static that the ref looked up and said yep that thing straight ahead that what a moment for that we're talking about literally a sixteenth of an inch away from that being a mess instead we have a three point ballgame with the home team taking a lead late [Music] Eric Glover 28th career game third year kicker for Tulane has been rock solid in his career out of Jericho New York Friends Academy has been steady that he delivers a huge kick to put to laid on top for the first time they have scored the last 24 points let's get a little business done all state rankings our college football rankings week for our top ten Utah goes on the road at USC tomorrow night what sticks out to you guys in this little and I'm looking at that ACC Network Clemson game probably just because my brother's calling that game you know I'm just being honest with you man funny oh my god I didn't see how Oklahoma does against Idol I think they're good shape here normal yes sir torch at notre-dame by the way that's where our game Dave grew is - punter on Saturday 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on ESPN six minutes a ball let's go dear a king good block from Patrick card he runs right near the sticks good run for King to start this drive yeah that's really interesting you fake to the runner and then that runner becomes your deep blocker Jarrett King runs for about nine yards doesn't take a hit that is a great way to start a drive second and one as a play callers dream you got all the options in the world if you don't get a second down and one you got a third down and short to try to convert the Jumbo set in there Patrick car pounds it ahead he's got two for the first down dear Kings wearing a wrist band tonight you know I asked coach Dana Holgorsen today what's up with the wristband you know in the NFL the coaches can talk in the quarterbacks helmet college can't do that so he's signaling to the quarterback the plays saying hey people try to steal our signals we got to go to a wristband and it's key on this drive under pressure he finds Christian Trahan then Trahan works ahead to the 41 yard line staying on schedule here though this is a big time drive for the Houston Cougars Tierra King knows his entire team is tired just got to keep stacking yards here and stay on schedule marquel black well Brandon Jones to the co offensive coordinators checking it out from up top Dana Holgorsen calls the plays from down on the field two lane trying to Sun Houston substituted so two lane gets an opportunity to as well on second down malmö car in front up tiara King who's got the first down the Eric King has been at big moments his entire Houston career he's never had a fully healthy season but when he's been in he's been electric he's been efficient and he's made as many game breaking plays as anybody in college football can remember with both his arm at his legs as I mentioned the injuries last year against Tulane he tore his ACL [Applause] got hit surf the season said hey man it felt really really good to get hit again King deep shot looking for a man and it's forced out of bounds looking for more quest Evensen and Larry Brooks has been up to the task multiple times tonight that was incredible to us bad Hasselbeck brave stride for stride with them picked him up and carried him out of bounds just a couple inches to force his second down and long here when tierra que in the University of Houston Cougars we're starting to get hot they were ground-and-pound in their early let's see if they go back to it Bulba car back to the ground not a whole lot there excellent job spilling to the outside we'll Harper got in there Malik the wall and Lawrence Graham all met at the lighting back door down coming up here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] too late brings the heat King on the move [Applause] and now I'm fourth down and long near midfield there is a two lane defender down to the field Larry Brooks him just forced them wide receiver out of bounds comes out of nowhere magic man to back that down big time fourth down here at the 48 yard line Houston has all three timeouts there's 339 left fourth and long what are you gonna do it looks like Geoffrey Johnson down on the deck and it is the sophomore from Brookhaven Mississippi he has the nickname that belongs to this city big easy he's earned the respect of this entire group one of the strongest players on this team getting checked out on the field right now with 339 to go fourth down here Houston still has all three of its timeouts remaining as well so you can still play defense the question that we ask is Houston gonna have enough Molly has been reporting about it from the field we know the schedule limitations for Houston and Dana Holgorsen in the early part of the season can they withstand this final three and a half minutes if they do decide to play defense obviously we hope the Big Easy is okay the last two punts for DES and Roy the 30-year old ice cream salesman from Australia have been down at the six in the three he's very good at pinning teams deep but when you pin somebody deep your defense has to show up and show out have they been able to do that up for debate for sure well the last time Pat you mentioned it they were down inside the five it was a third and forever and the defense couldn't make the play this is what we were discussing Oklahoma with Prairie View sandwiched in Washington State that oklahoma game was on a Sunday night playing on a Thursday night tonight they'll have only one game against North Texas over the course of the next 22 days so they'll have time for a rest fit but still three 39 of crucial conference football coming down to the wire here in New Orleans a credit to these kids into these coaches for Houston not making excuses playing all these games in a short of time really just saying hey you know what this is the schedule we're here to play and Dana Holgorsen also even just talked about how he did training camp he did sort of he ran his training camp as if there's a game every six days trying to prepare for this moment and his team has looked good tonight I think easy is getting helped off the field great to see Jeffrey Johnson back up on his feet this guy has a 400 pound bench a 600 pound squat so if he's hurt you know it's for real they were taking a look at that left leg it's hard to see what happened he had a nice bulrush there you need three members of the training staff to make sure he gets off the field all right hunter is on the field now Dane Roy and the Houston the hunting unit are gonna stay on the sidelines little pump fake by Dana Holgorsen have the fire in the huddle [Music] fourth and nine from the 48 here comes the pressure d arick ting a lot of green grass in front of them and he's got the first down with his feet but you've got a player like Tierra King playing quarterback for you and it's a massive moment Dana Holgorsen said hey pop we know you can make a play with your feet and your arm put 12 yard kick up to pick up a first down with 324 left in this game I'll give it to Patrick car here spins down to the 31 yard line to pick up a 5 wide open there for Dirac a wide open helmet came off of cab sample so he's got to come off the field for a play might Hinton the grad transfer from Columbia who's a captain this week we'll check in port a of sample wide open for gear can't get right back because when they bring the Blitz Mike Malik Lao Loum luck Lao along you gotta you gotta bring the Blitz but you can't overrun it you got to be a where this great running quarterback is at it every time and he's right down inside the 25-yard line down to the 21 11 more yards for Kings it feels like d arick is in his bag right now this is where he wants to be now granted nobody wants to be down three with 240 left but the Erica's confidence seems to be building here as the moments get tighter and tighter down the stretch over a hundred rushing yards for King tonight over 1,400 rushing yards in his houston career bulma car spinning away from the initial surge and that gets wrapped up by Lawrence Graham near the 18 yard line [Applause] [Music] the Aaron King does have a game-winning drive in his career 2017 against South Florida whole ranked team that night that was one of those nights where Tierra King hadn't really had a whole lot of reps at quarterback leading up to that game they thrust him into that role needing a big win when they were four and three and he delivered a huge performance and the game-winning blow against USF that night trying to do it again against Tulane tonight okay working nothing there and damn simple wraps him up and brings him down third down they are in field goal range to it's all the Witherspoon dismiss two ticks tonight so is that way on D Eric Kim's mind maybe can't take a loss here can't lose any yards but you know you've got three points potentially in the back of Tiger straight up with under a minute 30 left [Applause] blitz from Tulane Kennelly marker is strong Down Goes King we'll have to check the flags this is going to be against Houston as the initial indication and then a late flag a to flag play with a minute 10 to go here this will be key to sort out [Applause] minute 10 left to the game pretty large call here for the footlocker folks [Applause] infants under 65 after the play personal foul unnecessary [Applause] first down for Houston Tulane gets a personal foul penalty this was after the whistle had blown believe the wallet Patrick Johnson met at the quarterback I mean that's kind of bogus this place is about 60% full but it got really loud there it got loud at night in here whistle maintain the defenders didn't hear whistling here's good backups and oh boy you got strike that's an old bulb under that car played quarterback had Blitzers that come at me seen that so what now John disagree first attendee Eric King seeking space and he's down inside the five yard line second down coming up inside a minute to go to Lane only has one timeout and the crowd showing their displeasure with that previous call that gave a first down to the Cougars you said it Pat so what now what time for this too late defense to step up and do something hand off Patrick card nothing there - Myron James the redshirt freshman from here in New Orleans makes the stop and a timeout is called from to lay their last timeout Houston Becker pardon I beg your pardon Houston timeout 30 seconds left that's their first time out of this second half third down and three coming up for the Cougars here the blue birds are coming out that is a massive [Music] [Applause] I mean to put them in position to score here but the Thule defense has to step you guys were just talking about let's see if we can hear the whistles on that personal foul play [Music] [Applause] yeah that sound blowing their whistles right now definitely they're like trying to mess up with our thing there they knew that was coming they didn't want us to cook Omnitech I got 17 whistles blown in our head right now that is really I'm with you guys though that's really hard to tell when that whistle blows just say Alec been in that situation many times it's why you see quarterbacks throw the ball down that was a shame to say that very questionable third down and five to lane by three with 30 ticks to go in the conference opener no safeties deep here Adam and came to throw in some for Corbin it is a fleet but not hold on fourth down and a chance to tie it potentially for the Cougars I mentioned no safeties deep-cover zero were daring you to throw it to burn it missed opportunity Dalton Witherspoon talk to us pack get miss too early you have to get that out of your mind because your team needs you you trained all offseason to this moment you practice every single left the Tulane crowd is losing their mind when you step up and show up for your team Dalton weathers broke the tie it and this time he coolly connects to tie this game with 21 seconds to go so impressed with his mental toughness mr. chippy early missed another one but with 21 seconds left in the fourth quarter his team need them to make it he drives it through and hits the Allstate hands 16 play 68 yard drive extended by the Tulane personal foul penalty but they get the stop on third down force the field goal try two timeouts left for Houston one timeout for Tulane 21 seconds to go and really only one timeout left for Tulane because of the tempo of Houston's offense they use two in the first two and a half minutes in this and they use them both on defense yeah now Justin McMillan has proven tonight to be a quick strike threat hug a couple different occasions 21 seconds here they can really do something I would say though Pat if we get to a two-minute situation there's 2-minute desperation you're losing and then there's 2 minute the game is tied it's a different mindset for the quarterback and for the play call that's not a no escape no drastic situation cuz we still got all the time at love in front of a raucous atmosphere so Dalton witherspoon is gonna kick away the odd Stephon hunter sit on one side and the explosive Amari Jones on the other they're gonna go with the squib kick to keep it away from the return men grab my Nick Anderson and he's gonna take a knee to preserve time on the clock well spot the ball at the 29 yard line down to the field let's check in with poly Adam Justin McMillan with all the confidence in the world he brought his entire offense together just now and said they don't care anymore they're done they don't care and we can take over this game so the energy still high on Tulane sideline he came to Tulane five days before their season opener in 2018 took over for Jonathan banks midway through the season as the starting QB they went five and then one down the stretch seven and two as a starter army brat lived in five different states before he finally settled down the taking it's over today he's gonna take this to over time between McMillan and King I love their stories I love their heart I love the fact that we get to see both these guys in action oh it's a trick play [Applause] and he walks it up there big field [Applause] my goodness amore Jones out of the pack with it now I need a fix I'm 18 now we have 12 seconds left on the clock with the timeout for the Tulane Green Wave's stepped out of bounds to save that timeout Derek parish is down on the field there checking out his right leg right now the training staff checking on him how about bats pulling it out of the deepest part of the bag of tricks remember this team bring a bunch of trick plays against Auburn didn't really go the way they wanted it to go so we'll Holland Willie Fritz were almost a little gun-shy about some trick plays they +1 out of the biggest spot well this is called victory formation they usually made you just taken a knee sometimes you have this deep in your encyclopedia of plays you practice it all the time you've never ever run it in a game Willie Fritz will haul I love what a call now Merrick Glover we saw him deliver a big go-ahead field goal as well to get into his range you probably need about 25 yards or so you can get a 50 yard field goal with about 20 so let's see what two lanes offense can pick up as you mentioned patch two one timeout remaining for the Green Wave I love everything about that what an awesome game tonight we have been treated well eight back in coverage for Houston Macmillan launches down the middle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Oh [Applause] are you kidding me they run the trick victory formation to pick up some yards then Justin McMillan finds his ponytail in McCleskey who transferred here from Obama State to play for the team his dad coaches for the homo 'it's the insanity [Applause] finish [Applause] he's gonna have to take about a 15-yard extra point to fellowship Teeter the foe - word - plays 71 yards 15 seconds excessive celebration tectonically kickoff in extra point to try to go up seven with three seconds to go [Applause] [Music] plentiful to play secrets the trick and then the trick to the plus key and they drop me there's almost nowhere to throw the ball it's linked down the middle klasky seven the only one in the shower only four catches on the season he showed up tonight with his second touchdown catch this is one he will remember forever I think everyone in this stadium will remember this play forever what a finish we've got offensive linemen on the sideline doing the Mulder fight you're talking about fans in the stands getting ready to head to the flute right around the corner and just in mcfillin's hands the ball off in victory formation to the super back [Applause] coach fritz roads and dice brought something out of the back pocket there and all of a sudden you have that magical moment that McCluskey who transferred in here expecting a squib kick here I would assume he isn't keep this ball on the ground hope for a little bit of a bottle there run this clock down throughout Houston you're trying to get it you get down as quick as possible the way this game is going I would say this game is not over never mind we're gonna annexation of Puerto Rico this thing Stephenson trying to circle around Clark West Stevenson a penalty marker is thrown still on the move gets a block taken down we'll have to check the flag but if it stands what a night and what a win for Tulane let's check the flags number 89 [Applause] in the last seven years here in New Orleans I cannot be more excited for this to a fan base there was six winning seasons in 37 years the American Conference opener at home to win like that to do a lot of great things for the organization [Music]
