[Music] real heritage on RFD TV is brought to you by rural heritage magazine a bi-monthly magazine featuring articles about farming and logging with draft animal power small-scale diversified family farming and homesteading and other aspects of our rich rural heritage rural heritage magazine borrowing from yesterday to do the work of today for subscription information please call three one nine three six two three zero two seven or order online at wwlp.com hi welcome to another episode of rural heritage on rfd-tv last week we looked at produce and hay making equipment demonstrated at the 2018 horse progress days held in Clair Michigan this week we turn our camera on traditional field equipment like spreaders planters plows cultivators and other row crop tillage tools so here is our first piece of equipment of the morning this is from farmers equipment this is the one horse manure spreader Ranjan here for 25 bucks giving split point model here belts for thirty eight hundred and fifty dollars and they also have a thirty three fifty two wheel trailer type well this one has the seat on it of course those days you can have self-contained units this is from easy spreader manufacturers the herb family out in Ohio this is the 30 bushel model sells for two thousand three fifty and they do have the 75 5535 the twenty-five bushel available as well ignores on their spreaders they have the 11 games powder coated steel sides all the roller chains on these spreaders are tierod web and bronze bush they have the bronze bushing bearings on them as well so this you can get a little pain on this tailgate airwheel steel wheels or steel with the rubber balls is on wheels as three different kinds of wheels you can get on here too so we'll see that one work there you have the model 50 light stir manure spreader that's a 50 bushel with the optional litter pan does that that has the litter pan honor that believe yep bikes or spreaders been making spreaders now for quite a number of years down in Kirkwood Pennsylvania started out on the farm to a dairy farm started out actually repairing and rebuilding new idea of manure spreaders so that's how this company got started they say this is their most popular model with over they sold over 500 minutes last year they have a tailgate that can go on there of course the little pin that wheeljack as well ok now this looks like the same colors here as the old do is renders that I talked about a little while ago here's a cup yeah this was self-contained of course without the port card on it so here's this has the airwheel Vaughn of course it's a 75 bushel sells for fifty five fifty the 55 35 30 bushels 25 bushels and the poly floors despite the other one of course but a much bigger unit here they do have options on here that are paying tailgate slime attachments so you can get a lime attachment here that's a nice feature for in the fall if you want to line some of your fields there's another light source rather than this is a 100 bushel model and options again on this one this is just stepping up a little bit you see the spreader pattern on here and the web chain and so on all the components that sound like mr. spreader position there's all their unis okay now we are through with on the north spreaders for this year and the poly fertilizer spreader I don't know I think this spreader maybe has been almost every old progress days so John just said he started out putting the gears the mechanism under here from a number seven mowing machine very similar to the equipment down there but now they started again making their own so that that's the pattern that's taking place over and over started on a design that someone else had and then make it into your own design and keep working so that's what's going on with this poly fertilizer spreader here and it spins up every horse progress days I think from the very beginning 1775 is the price on that very economical piece of equipment and a mainstay for your stainless-steel spinners are stainless steel so they're gonna last longer yep and that thing can spread defective and we have for the Kirkwood's Brenner they're on the back that's two times better sells for $7,500 from Kirkwood repair shop down in Kirkwood Pennsylvania gateway is their dealer up here they do have a five-time unit available as well and they say this unit works great for fertilizer but also for compost which is actually what we have on there today and also use a particular key litter they can literally match this particular one is what they call the seventh number 715 leaf spring season spring sulky plow it's got the 14-inch Keystone bottoms on it which means that this plow from the bottom to the top is the white horse designed to the white horse produce way towards making their own bottoms now making available to other plow makers as well white horse you know has been making hydraulic clouds for many years and they're fantastic they're also expensive they're still very popular I think enough certain parts of the country especially down in like County where there's lots of rock but this leaf spring is white horses response to the expense of a hydraulic plow and I think this might be the first sport for ogress days I'm not sure about this but where we don't even have we don't actually have a white horse hydraulic crowd cloud that demonstrate three come with plan your plow pioneers and other companies it's put a lot of time and effort R&D into their plows very important hands-free operation here keep your hands on the line furrow wheel for better control and all that's really important when you come up out of the out of the ground at the end of the row you want to turn to the right set the wheel will will swivel in the back there bring your right bring us out right a rot right around now this is just to burn the bottom on it that's the bottom that pioneer introduced to solid farming world that's a number of years ago and it's a very popular bottom that works and turns the soil night that you can see how it is just turn the soil over there it's more efficient as it slices through the ground admit many then be Oliver and John Deere which are more more abrupt than make more babies some thesis depending on the kind of soil that you're plowing Rosie yes this hope you got a little more chunky with with this bottom this is excellent also for cover crops which of course is better we control this is really what farming is all about it at least a big big part of it weed control it's really nice to see those nice straight rows of corn and soybeans and alfalfa plants coming out but the weak they don't want to come right alongside of them so what can you do for week two so there's some seminars in there then we'll tell you about that they do but that's very important and they say this is great for the a organic farmer to hear this excellent is playing in my soil it's got the long more moldboard on there that's the very bottom that the soccer hold book that we talked about there for smooth continuous furrow and the part teats are each treated to last four to six times longer than conventional parts a lot of engineering and good design in this flower here as well this one has a tongue on it to attorney here's another whiteboard plow this is the two-way flow this is probably the person knows their way to cloud that's been manufactured in the country for I don't know how many years but there were a lot of the old John Deere and Oliver clouds out there and wave cloud that they're actually still out there they've been rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt time and time again unlike anything else getting harder and harder to keep them rebuilt and if all the parts of glaze for them so this is this is white horses response to their customers request for a two-week vow of course you see this one is designed with the leaf spring wheat set on there two very important this is the number 732 sells for $5,000 we get those spring cultures with skimmers on there too sometimes it's called a hillside now because you go out to the end of the row and then wow you turned around and come right back and you put the other side in the ground so here you have no debt furrows in the middle of your field and you have even if you're farming on a hill and you want to plow all everything up the hill you can do that in here so this is a really nice piece of equipment it's ideal for produce farmers that do double cropping have land strip you know out to the end turn around come back very easily by she's got that foot activated plug that'll lift the plough out of the ground without the beaver you can use a hand labor to adjust up and down this you're plowing but bring the plough out they should put leaver enough we come the tongue is offset with a thickness to be adaptable for two three and four horses and this mechanical to wait flowers introductions 6060 not for a long time there and it's the first of this kind with me okay here we have the very very popular design of pioneer plow now this is they calling a prototype because it has some features on it that they just connect on that it is one is now you see on top of this plow also the leek the spring what he said in addition to the rock Klaus raised platform we put the operator way up over top of the horse is there nice poor looking ahead and really being charged the open view of the furrow between his demons of course it almost any configuration features on this one that are the spring that spring assist put this again here the government's these spring recent that you see on top there the raised platform provides that view that I talked about the Virgil government engineer human beings bottom and spring and the easily adjustable horizontal line of draft without looking extra even I don't think you shows that there at all that line of graft anyway it's adjustable easily adjustable I have to put a thin there yeah so that's the finance Lao you see in front of you this one sells for 2,000 183 and they say this is their early model audience plot one of the first white horse has been and one of the first of white horse has been a reliable simple model 440 nearly forty years so here's a plow very basic cloud so she's now step up from a walking plow actually that they've been making for almost 40 years down there white horse and this lightweight cloud resembles the first models built after the walking cloudy or sometimes known as writing now it's got the adjustments right there in front of you there's not quite as if it stays some of the other clouds we're moving up now in size of the plows and horsepower and here we have now for the first time the roses always that we'll start with that a little bit this is the rope and pulley system with actually the very first port progress data it's really interesting now looking back to realize now how this is work but the rope and pulley system is a model for all the other things that have been come along sort of in a way collaborations and things that have changed the way that were farming is done so that rope and pulley system is wait for the vault voyages to work together and each horse has to do its job you see that scene of the Rope the nylon rope there is tied off at the back of the back door key strength is there you come through the pulley comes up to the traces and is tied off to the traces of the front horse which means that the doors end up there are working together just like a team side by side working working together is very beautiful to them okay now on the plow that's the pioneer dang plow that the popular probably one of the most popular model the theft Pioneer has made over the years he has that elevated platform this is very popular provides an unobstructed view and of course the tongue then turns a fun real rear Perot wheel for better control put max on there freeze your hands when you're driving into the furrow and then it's got the safety bottoms on organic excellent free cover crop better weed control good for the organic farmers beds make and it's good in clay soils expert inverted bottom got that long board on it with the slower twist that we talked about earlier and of course that he's treated parts very very nice piece of equipment there we've lost again had lots of innovations built into it you see that handle there under the with us with the silver handle that pop on it there for a dusting those the week of the FIR that you want to plow got that nice wheel in the side there that is the market pioneer as well and so there you go nice piece of equipment okay now we're up six here again now we have then on the plow this is the number seven twenty five leaf spring trailer plow came popular for strong files as for cars and anthem hitches were developed so the old clouds preceded this one whiteboard follows several ideas from that bygone era and combine them with their latest new designs and develop this model 725 leaf springs reset plow there's that these spring reset on the top there again the rear wheel here locked in position while plowing and then it cancers freely when the plow is lifted so it goes out of gear when the cloud lifted and comes it turns right around and comes back in ground drive mechanical clutch this allows for a consistent high even if it set deep for flowey and a stable and well-balanced cloud for rocky conditions they say you can add weights on the side they have a couple ways so they have one weight on the side over here now for hard soil conditions and of course you can get the Keystone all over done your father's on here 12 14 or 16 it's there's another collaboration now with better way equipment they put a little piece on there that they could fold a better way roller basket behind here and maybe save a trip over the field this is a 48 inch roller basket sells for $700 and mollis machinery parts is where that came from because the roller is made to break down large chunk and to help with Pili's and it makes it better for the horses to move on the plowed ground that's a nice feature they can reduce the pants before planting and it doesn't make the file much harder it's a standard feature on here these actual tongue for customs to custom pitcher plow the wastewater Taneytown of the code oh I'm sorry 280 pounds of additional weight can be added depending on the soil and the weights will not add anything to the tongue weight so that's a nice feature there okay now here is a plow that has not been the horse will progress date before it's actually a manufacturer in Canada oh they call their company Salem plow and plant answer so we're happy to have them here this year this is the closest we get to Canada Italy right here in Michigan so just go eat a little bit and you're in Ontario now this is a two bottom plow you can get those twelve fourteen on here bottoms well and you can that has to do with this with the dress there you go we yeah right there okay so this is really important on a hillside or if you want to straighten out of Road I don't know if you can see that the moving up front of that set right there that's an unusual feature on this plow the allow you to take a little bit of a wider Pro even even here if you see your conditions are good it's allowing easy you want to take a little bit of wider fur you can do that or if you're in hard hard conditions and you want to narrow the front of it that leave it right there too right we'll do it for you and if you're on a hill and you're coming around the hill and the plow want to come in against the hill you know you just move that lever a little bit and you got a little more of a bite on the foot point of the plow okay we talked about this a little bit earlier but the point of draft on these plows is really really important and of the designs that they get the power from the horses to the point of draft in the most efficient manner is what makes things work the bet is now the ship she calls the motor in the story behind this call to Malter is that twelve years ago many the Miller from Indiana came up here with the first-called called the vulture that was I think there was a guy in Kentucky he may have demonstrated one I'm not sure but he didn't keep up with it and then Maynard came here and demonstrated one they went home with the pocketful we were told a false reason that launched the color conscious phenomenon that we've seen that horse farming in the last 12 years actually in a short period of time but these are all the motors now being made by many different manufacturers over the times we have good representation up here where I understand you'll see a few more of them out here a little bit this is a 5-footer it's got that fun adapter on it sometimes though the others that section will bring out here will have just an even off even are on it and attach right to the to the column altar but this one doesn't have the tongue and the front adapter on it there which is a nice feature for turning they're very heavy steel is very heavy it will pulverize in soil this is the pioneer Calder Walter now we're moving up in design inside here and again again see how these tines going to the ground too another thing I might mention here on these times and it's very first course progress stage we'll see it is a cultivator out here a little bit later but these tines got introduced there in made in time because a nice time Denmark got introduced the very good progress days on imj cultivators and int that is still the main ultimate event preparation here again you do more in one class with his cult falter it's got the articulating center with Duvall many demonstrated under navy greens without dragging or evening skipper s9 below the front there one so here you have a different set of s times along the spot then you got the cruller coming along behind 17-inch independent Rolly crummers struck the pod before they dry in the Sun and then the rear page rollers leave the neatly tilt surface look at that improves determination we talk about that a little bit before it's very important so you have 4 foot 6 foot 8 foot 10 foot and the fourth power recommended here they have outline here as well they recommend six forwards to the six foot six the eighth and 84 the 10 if you want to go out spend some time in the field another great piece of equipment on the pioneer company and what you see in front of you now with the tube really well trained for just being here like reminds me of Little House on the Prairie book but a lot of many many parts of the world are not do not have access to tractor power like we have here in the West and not even small tractors and and for many parts of the world even the kind of equipment that we see used here at horse Progress days is much too big and impractical for parts of the world where animals are small or not you had non-existent so this this no words International is is out here we represent with these with these oxen and this planter that you see is a collaboration effort between tillers international and pioneer equipment to build a piece of equipment that is actually a no-till planter for use in countries in Africa that are food insecure okay now here's the mind here this is Mary's equipment for minor I think and they say if the Weiner is the we control pollution for organic farmers that they grant farmers have been searching for I think there's some truth to that it's ideal for farmers Sophia wheat for Rose with just two horses the pony proposed a hydraulic the tires for the decisions right like we have to do with qualities that's something I hadn't really thought about but of course it's very true you can we have to sport Road emanate yes I said the precision driving weeds in the road this one deserves nearly 100 percent of the soil including in the row and because those times they sort of shake as they go through the ground there and just like the s5 Danish signs do prevent Haley create smoother field is that spring-assisted left on it and this this time whether they say equally adapt to various row and crop facing since ideal for corn soybeans and effective in other forms of produce as well okay now we have the Miller tine weeder here this is from Mervyn Miller out and range Indiana he made sport carts and has got a cultivator that will be in here a little bit later to that has been very successful for him this one sells for $2,600 Yoder farm supply will handle it for you up here in Michigan of course this one also covers four rows in one pass you got the steel or you can get air tires on here as well now this has a nice design here with the swivel type arrangement on top there for allowing the tines frame the time to stay in contact with the ground all the time as much as possible and also the arrangement where could show us maybe on top there that's yeah okay back and forth that's good and then the depth the depth well yeah that that was so that has a nice depth if you want to make them out set them up a little bit more straight to give a little bit more force or if you want to do like what I do this the operator is doing here is keeping the Dynes back a little bit that's damaging maybe to the primary crop of corn and helps you lose your trash - okay yeah so there's there's another time waiter a great great new or old old technique that's come back and then we have the tine weeder that John Pilar is showing you there from he's from down in rohnke Pennsylvania this is a three section tine weeder look at it carefully when you get a chance when I talk about the floating units there I think this one floats about is independently as anything I've seen because you've got the chains on the front of the units they're up against on the frame of the the tiller there of the machine and then you got those bars going back through that are stable and there you got the u-shape coming up over the back of the bar there which that's the back of this unit shipped a lot more than some of the others I believe that we've seen is you've got the depth control there on all three units and you got the hydraulics and some hydraulics on it which helps to fold it up and helps to put it up and down so you have two two handles there maybe holding up there John is that hard to show there you go there you go let her down design for weeks trail corn soybeans etc and use every five to nine days here I thought I saw this yesterday every five to nine days before we'd emerge for best control so you want to stay in front of ease my mom always said about her garden if she sees the weeds it's too late the times of the gang pulling points are adjustable to different crops stages so again another really nice design ona on a tine wieder they're for stronger day 2018 ok time here I'll again providing the horsepower in this morning with SAP Butterfield was bought at at you can go ahead time talk a little bit about these guys they're farming their Disney horses every day these are the probably don't work as hard as both they don't do as many haters with the horses if you will they came a long ways but just tells you a lot about the painter they've been out really been quietly doing this program is available for
