what's up guys it's andrew from motorcycles off road and i got a new video for you today in this video we're going to find the actual weight of my honda 300l we're going to talk about what i've done to save weight we're also going to talk about what i've done to added weight and we're going to lift this thing up and get a total weight of the bike after all the upgrades slash modifications and i also want to touch a little bit on how much the weight actually matters and if it doesn't matter all that much so i hope you guys appreciate the effort i put into this video i bought this little scale to attach to my forklift and if you do appreciate the effort please give me a thumbs up at the bottom below and i'll show you exactly how i did this if you're new here i hope i earn your sub and you consider subscribing and in fact if you're new if you check out some of my other videos i have what i think is the most well received most popular honda 300l review on youtube also pretty well received reviews slash comparisons of the 300l to the klx 300 and a drz-400 and more still to come including my tenera 700 but about this video let's talk about weight so in my field of expertise i am an inspector non-destructive radiographer ultrasound technician all of that i inspect bridges amusement park rides chemical plants nuclear plants you name it i do weld inspection and structural inspection one thing that allows me to do is have certain advantages for testing including radiography but also something as simple as having a forklift periodically customers drop off pipes or heavy plates vessels that we have to inspect and sometimes they need us to hold it overnight so we got this good old fashioned but still strong because they don't make them like they used to forklift and i bought this little scale off amazon it says it's accurate up to 660 pounds so my plan is to connect a couple straps to the bike and pick it up with the forklift we're going to weigh the actual straps themselves and we're going to see how much the bike weighs minus the strap weight now one thing i have to say about weight of these bikes is it's very deceptive because how the bike is balanced just think about this for a second from an engineer's standpoint if you change the degrees in a forks just a little bit you lengthen shorten the vehicle you put the weight distribution at a certain percentage the front and rear wheel maybe lower the bike feels completely different that should be obvious to anybody that understands any bit of physics or weight distribution but you have so many people that just see weight on paper and they just say the bike is too heavy and it can't be ridden through stuff like single trail and things like that or it can't be agile and i would have to say i completely disagree i've taken this bike through all those things as well as the people who i do let ride this bike the first thing they comment on is how light the bike is and then i tell them the actual weight and they're pretty surprised and in fact i know three people two of which own 300 l's who had drz's and rode the 300l and comment on how much lighter the 300l is they would have guessed it was 50 pounds later when it's a matter of 10 pounds so weight distribution placement angles all this matters why is that important why am i bringing it up well because most of the people that say this bike weighs too much are probably the people watching this video and a lot of those people aren't the ones that have ever even rode the bike in the first place but they'll be the first ones in the comment section to tell me that the bike's way too heavy and that some bike back in whatever year was lighter and this and that but i've rode those bikes and they're not the easiest to handle off-road and one thing that really sticks out to me to show that the weight on paper doesn't matter as much is i've been recently watching tenere 700 reviews and almost every single reviewer says the same thing you don't feel the weight of the tenera 700 on a trail but you feel it when you have to pick it up or you have to move it around muscle it around in your garage that's a heavy bike though i haven't taken it on too many trails yet them saying that i can completely understand by owning the honda 300l so the point i'm trying to make is this a flawed experiment to tell how the bike is gonna perform gonna move and handle off-road but it is an interesting topic and a lot of people wanna know so i decided to do it hannah claims this bike weighs between 308 309 pounds and that is completely full of fuel oil coolant everything so that's exactly how we're going to test it today so let's talk about what i've removed and what i've added to the bike that'll remove and add weight firstly what we took off well the exhaust the exhaust is one of the biggest things you can change that's going to affect your weight in the terms of making the bike more light the stock exhaust is heavy i went with a full yoshimura system which i think took about six pounds off next is the battery when i had this bike reserved i had another 4 wheeler that needed a battery so i just bought the lithium ion for that bike waiting for the date of the 300l would come and then i would replace it with the lithium battery that lost me about four or five pounds next i changed the sprocket which was probably a half a pound i have to go back and look at the pictures that know for sure but it wasn't much and the bars which were about a half a pound i also don't have passenger foot pegs but they weigh basically nothing they're aluminum when you look at what i added to the bike the biggest thing that a lot of people do as they start doing this mental math of all these things they changed on their bike and it never could take into consideration the things they added to a bike i've seen it in the comments i've seen plenty of people do it but the biggest thing you can add to your bike that's going to add weight that everyone does is aftermarket tires and tubes that is a huge weight increase stock tires are made to be light feel good on test rides terrible off-road but they weigh nothing they're paper thin and then you also have your tubes which are basically like eggshells let's say they're like one mil and aftermarket tubes that we put in so did you don't tear rip are about three mil now i didn't weigh the stock tubes i took out of this bike but they were light let's say like one or maybe two pounds and the heavy duty ultra thick tubes that i put in this bike weighed well at least online they say 4.1 pounds each so each tube undid my battery then on top of it i'm running a thick pirelli up front and a michelin ac 10 in the rear which also will add weight i'm running a plastic skid plate which is about three and a half pounds i weighed that and also brush guards of course which actually undid the weight of the aluminum bars and added another half pound on top so those are all the changes i've done i haven't noticed the feeling and the weight change one way or the other oh also i don't know if i mentioned but i did add a protaper x-ring chain which was much more heavy than the original o-ring stock chain so yeah there's a lot of things i added to this bike to make it more durable to make it more reliable and just make it a cooler bike but what kind of difference did that make when you add stuff like tires skid plates all that addition add it to the bike well we're gonna find out so here's what i decided to do i decided to take two straps put one on each swing arm side making sure not to pinch anything and then one underneath the triple clamps not the bar itself but the triple clamps itself which i know each strap is going to be supporting about 75 pounds and the triple clamp itself is going to be supporting 150 which is completely fine for this bike i'm going to lift the load nice and slow and nothing should get hurt i mean if you ever pulled your bike out of a mud pit then you're putting more exertion than 150 pounds let alone on the heavy part of the triple clamps anyway before i do this i just want to take a guess of what i think this bike should weigh and after everything i've said what do you guys think the bike should weigh let me know in the comments below because i'm about to lift it my guess i should weigh about 300 pounds plus or minus uh two or three pounds or another kilogram that's what i think it should weigh so let's lift her up and see what we get okay so i went into lifting this thinking it's going to be about 300 pounds and when i finally got the lift done it's completely suspended and we're back up to 308 pounds so basically everything i put on this bike the light in the bike was outdone by the skid plate the hand guards the tires and the tubes and the chain of course so all that counteracted all the weight i took away from the bike and now we're back at stock weight it's just crazy how this turned out i would have thought it would have made a difference one way or the other but like imagine putting all this stuff on without changing the exhaust the sprocket the handlebars and the battery you'd be rocking a bike that's probably about 230 pounds but once again anybody that's ever rode this bike comments on how nimble it is how light it is and then i tell them the actual weight now if you have this bike there's other things you can do if your state's not too strict on emissions or motorcycles there's also the carbon can eliminator i believe i've read that can take off another three pounds if you ride close to home or your truck cart your bike out there and then you ride around in 70 mile intervals you could also run it with one gallon less gas which will also put it about 300 pounds so there's a couple things you can do to lighten a bike but as it stands i don't feel like there's too much more you're gonna do besides what i've done and it put me back in stock i mean i guess you could run without protection like skid plates and stuff like that but i think that's a necessity and it's worth the wait guys anyway i hope you guys liked my explanation and methodology of my test and if you guys want to see this with other bikes maybe to ten array or whatever bike i can do it and stay tuned guys i got more content on the 300l and the 10ray 700 coming up including a big camping trip that's going to be spanning across four days and 450 miles of mostly off-road travel so i hope you guys enjoyed that kind of stuff it'll be coming up really soon and thanks for watching remember to hit the thumbs up subscribe if you're new and stay safe out there guys my name is andrew and this is motorcycles off-road thanks for watching so hmm
