twenty-eight thousand years ago the last surviving populations of a once-great species lived in the cold of Eurasia this species has been given the name home aetherium this animal was very unique its features are like nothing else seen on earth today it was about 1.1 meters or 3 foot 7 inches at the shoulder it also weighed an estimated 190 kilograms or 420 pounds this is about the same size as a modern-day male African lion it possessed the pair of saber like teeth they were smaller than many of its relatives but nevertheless deadly these teeth are proportionately longer than any other living cat and were also serrated the molars of home etherium were rather weak and not well adapted for bone crushing the skull was proportionately longer than a Smilodon and had a large crest this crest allowed powerful jaw muscles to be attached home etherium looked like a typical cat but had a number of strange features it had unusual limb proportions it had longer and more robust four limbs likely for grappling with prey with these long arms it had a hyena like appearance its hind limbs are small and may have been adapted to jumping it had an unusually large square nasal opening similar to that of a cheetah this may have been used for rapid or extended running and cooling of the brain another similarity to the cheetah was its large and complex brain its brain was likely adapted to improved vision home aetherium likely heavily relied on its vision during a hunt it was a very successful predator and during the Pleistocene it lived all over the world eventually it would begin to go extinct around the world the decline of home etherium may be a result of the disappearance of large herbivorous mammals at the end of the Pleistocene also competition with other mammals may have been a major part in its extinction North American remains of home aetherium suggests that it was more dominant he likely preferred higher latitudes and therefore was likely better adapted to colder conditions the reduced claws relatively slender limbs and sloping back all appear to be adaptations for endurance running and open habitats African Homo theorem species seem to have hunted early Pleistocene species like Dino theorem likely preferring to target the more vulnerable adolescents or calves in a herd due to their saber teeth an attack on such a thick-skinned prey would have been significantly easier and less time-consuming compared to a similar hunt on modern-day elephants by Lions at the well no fries in HoN cave in Texas the remains of almost 400 juvenile mammoths were discovered along with numerous home etherium skeletons of all ages based on this fossil site home etherium was likely a social predator that would have specialized in hunting young mammoths and subsequently dragging their kills into secluded caves to eat in relative peace home etherium also seemed to have retained the excellent nocturnal vision typical of most cats hunting at night in the arctic regions where many homeless Irian have been found would have been a prime hunting method the sloped back and powerful lumbar section of Homo theorems her tabret suggests a bear like build and thus these animals could have been capable of pulling formidable loads broken upper canines were not common for this species perhaps this is because they hunted in packs and the prey struggled less fossil evidence has allowed us to learn a lot about these animals in North America they commonly preyed on juvenile mammoths these mammoths were likely relatively easy to kill once separated from their parents fossil evidence tells us that after a kill a group of homeless areum would dismember the animal they would then use their powerful frame to carry away parts into caves here they would finally feast on their prey this hunting method left little opportunity for powerful competitors to steal their kill this reminds me of how leopards take their kills into trees where they can eat them in relative privacy home aetherium was a part of a long line of saber-tooth cats it was related to the legendary Smilodon though separated by about 18 million years of evolution homo thorium itself first appeared around 4 million years ago it thrived in Eurasia but also lived in many other places it survived in Africa until about 1.5 million years ago and likely ran into some of our earliest human ancestors he lived in North America for a long time and even crossed into South America about 1.8 million years ago it is unknown how long home etherion survived in South America or North America but has thought that the last surviving populations died out in Eurasia around 28,000 years ago interesting to think that humans certainly encountered this beast and likely lived around it for a long time they're gone and we're still here thanks for watching make sure to check out my patreon and Instagram link in the description I'll see you in the next episode of North o2 see ya you
