2 hours later I just started grinding this on the belt sander it was doing a very poor job but I think I forged it out a little bit too thin anyway I'm sure I could make it work but instead I went and forged another one I've done it in exactly the same way but I've just left a little bit more meat on it this time and instead of using the belt sander I think I'm gonna start shaping it with a file Turns out a new belt helped I've just had a disaster and it was looking so good as well after I'd bent this tang over it was actually ever so slightly leaning over the one way so off-camera I tried to pull it back it really wasn't much at all that's why I didn't bother filming it and stupidly I didn't heat it up first then I snapped it so that it's pretty disappointing I do want to continue with the project and get it done so I'm gonna have to start making a new one I did try to weld it but that was never going to work my welding not good enough for that just to speed things up I'm going to use this bit of 1075 steel here and it won't take me long to get back to this stage it's a bit disappointing cuz I did actually want to forge it but anyway that's what I'm going to do now heating before tweaking learning from my mistakes doing it that way was much quicker it didn't take long at all now I can heat treat it hardening tempering for 2 hours Using Spotted Gum for the handle needs to be hardwood next I need to drill the holes for the tangs to go through and I've just realized I've made this difficult for myself because now I've got to drill those in just the right place that the front of the blade ends up on this edge here and what I would have been better to have done would have been to drill the holes and mount the blade first and then cut this out afterwards but I'm gonna give it a go and see if I can get it in the right place I'm not sure if you can see with the camera angle but both of these tangs are angling slightly and that's so when they're in the hole and I have to actually pull them apart a little bit to get them in the hole they grip the side of the hole and they'll keep the blade in position also if you look at the tang from this way they're tapered so next I'm going to get a cordless and I'm going to wobble it from side to side this way and try and create that taper in there and then gradually set this in bit by bit until it seats nicely next I need to start rounding over this edge of the hole here and that's to accommodate the radius of the blades it's starting become a bit of a theme on this project but I'm going to restart the handle I got a little bit heavy handed here and I've ended up splitting the wood there really isn't enough wood on the outside of it so I'm going to make it a little bit wider and it didn't take too long to make anyway so I'm just going to start again and this time I'm going to set the blade in before I chop this out I've just cut a new blank I've planed that bevel on the bottom drilled the holes on the drill press and now I need to start enlarging those to fit the blade only took about ten minutes so it was worth doing it's not too bad it just needs a bit of fine tuning and I'll use a file just open the mouth up slightly that's much better I could stop there it's a useable tool as it is but now for the fun part to start shaping it into hopefully something nice my memory card just ran out on that cut but I cut a piece off that side and then piece of the underneath as well I got there in the end I made it look harder than it actually was it was really quite easy to make I think it turned out great it works amazingly well I'm very very happy with it so hopefully you enjoyed the video if you did please like and subscribe thanks for watching and I'll see you on the next one
