Kevin you always wanted to make your own hamburger buns that is what we're gonna do today hi everybody thanks so much for stopping by the homestead my name is sarah from living traditions homestead and you know i love doing things it's homemade around here it saves money I know what ingredients are in everything that we eat and I just have more control of the whole process so recently we have decided not to buy any more bread or bread products from the store and so we've been making those at the house and so I thought I would bring you along today to make some hamburger buns because that is what we're going to be using tonight for dinner so I'm gonna get started I use a very you know it's into the easy recipe it's probably has probably a little bit more ingredients than you know just a basic white bread recipe but it adds extra nutrients I think extra nutrition and so I love to use this recipe I also use this recipe to make hot dog buns I use it to make white bread and it's our family's favorite bread recipe and it is super universal but I'm gonna get started so the first thing that we need to do is get some of our flour in the bowl this recipe calls for two and a half cups flour and we're just going to get that into the bowl now we switch to all organic wheat flour probably I remember when but that's one of the reasons why we're no longer buying bread products from the store - yeah we're doing all the dry ingredients first let me get the East we're doing two teaspoons of yeast one teaspoon of salt and two tablespoons of sugar we've also switched to non-gmo cane sugar CNH makes non-gmo cane sugar one two okay so that is all the dry ingredients I'm gonna just mix that up a little bit with my mixer okay so this recipe calls for one cup of milk and it needs to be warmed up a little bit to about a hundred and thirty degrees and that way it can help the yeast activate so I'm going to get that going okay so my milk is warm enough I'm just going to pour it right into my mixer with the flour I'm adding one egg this egg is at room temperature that's also important you don't want to cool down the milk too much and prevent the yeast from activating and then two tablespoons of oil and using olive oil two tablespoons now we're going to mix this on high for two minutes all right that has been beating for two minutes and now the recipe says to add a quarter cup of flour in there mix it slowly and then basically add a little bit more flour as needed to make it not quite so sticky before we put it on the counter and start kneading it generally I don't know what it is but for some reason because I use organic flour I think for me it requires at least to not pick up more of flour so I mixed in the quarter cup of flour and it needed a little bit more I ended up adding an additional just under another quarter cup let it mix up and it formed into a ball and so now I'm going to finish the rest of everything on the counter now we have a really cool dough scraper that really helps like scrape it on the dough from the bowl and onto the counter we're just going to put some rapid some flour on the counter so that when I need it doesn't get all stuck on everything must scrape this out of the wall and start kneading it now in this recipe after you get it out of the bowl you need to knead it 50 times get your arm workout done that day stick so I'm going to add a little bit more flour to the top just so things don't get sticky on me and then I'm going to knead this 50 times okay so that was fifty times and now what I need to do is I just need to let this rest for ten minutes so I'm just going to leave it on the counter where it is I'm going to cover it with the towel to keep the moisture in and I'm just going to let it rest for ten minutes and then we'll get cutting it into the hamburger buns and put it in the pan to get ready to rest for our to rise so just grab yourself a towel cover it then just let it rest for ten minutes okay guys so here we go we're going to turn this bread dough into hamburger buns we also use this for like regular sandwiches and stuff but it makes a really nice big size for like a nice sandwich or for your hamburger buns so the first thing but we have to cut these into eight we're gonna make eight a burger buns and first we need to cut this big big pile of dough in half with a sharp knife and that's a sticky side I just dab in some flour so that it doesn't stick everywhere okay so we're gonna we're gonna start working with this half here and I just kind of make it into a little log I guess you wouldn't say we're gonna cut this in half okay do the same thing dump it in a little bit of flour so it doesn't stick okay and then we're gonna cut these two in half and that will give us eight hopefully equal sized hamburger buns okay so after you get them so this is the sides that we're going to use to make hamburger bun okay so technically you could just put a little round of it in your pan but I I like to flatten it out a little bit that way it won't grow so tall it'll kind of grow wide and tall too okay so that's about how I'm gonna make them just like that and then I'm gonna put it in my pan now I greased this with some olive oil so put that in here make my second one okay almost like you're making a little hamburger patty put that in there so I'm gonna do this for the rest of them making sure that they all get squished in there and then we'll come back when I have a pan full okay there we have them I'll eat a little buns in there I like to just kind of smash them and get it down again you know one more time now that they're in the pan okay now we're going to let them rise we're gonna let them rise until they double and so they're probably gonna be maybe just a little bit underneath the top of this pan it won't take as long as if you are going to be waiting around for bread to rise but just keep watching just keep peeking on them but it'll probably be at least 30 minutes 3045 minutes okay so we're just going to put this towel back over them put the towel there we're just gonna let that rise here my next warm countertop okay my new burger buns have been left alone to rise and I think that they're big enough and you can see a thing I've risen quite a bit and it's time for me to put them in the oven I have preheated the oven to 375 degrees and these will take about 10 next are a 15 to 20 minutes to bake in the oven until they're golden brown and then we'll take them out so into the oven they go okay they are out of the oven and they look fantastic look at how they look they're nice and big and golden-brown and they're gonna be perfect for burgers YUM so we're finished I hope you try it I really want to know what you think so that's it
