[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] good evening and a great big welcome to you all this evening we welcome you to this celebration of the easter vigil here at holy trinity parish we have a some great news a parish reopening plan that we're rolling out and we're excited to announce that we're busy working on this plan to reopen and rejuvenate our parish to welcome you back to welcome all of our parishioners back to reach out largely to our community and here's just a sneak peek of a few of the activities that are now being planned on sunday may 30th we will celebrate our parish feast of the holy trinity with a family picnic and everyone in the community is invited to that then in mid-june we'll resume in person our popular vacation bible school which is a great opportunity to disconnect your children from technology and connect them to be more united with our god in a fun faith-filled setting right here at holy trinity campus and then in july holy trinity is proud to be one of four parishes in our whole diocese selected to host for the first time a regional diocesan youth camp for children with arts and crafts and games nature activities and prayer and for more information on these and other great activities here that are being planned please take a look at our bulletin our website and our facebook page now and in the weeks to come and then lastly i wanted to give you just a little campaign update because of such great news and you'll see it in the bulletin this evening but um under parish capital campaign update but we want to just a huge thank you to you we together have been able to pay off more than 1.3 million dollars on our loan and other financial obligations since just last march so 13 months and it's assisting us with the necessary repairs that all of all of us know about here at the campus and other great improvements on our camp on our campus so thank you so much for all of your wonderful support and your generosity mass will begin momentarily in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen grace for lord jesus christ and the love of god the communion of the holy spirit be with you all dear brothers and sisters on this most sacred night in which our lord jesus christ passed from death to life the church calls upon her sons and daughters throughout the world to come together to watch and pray if we keep the memorial of the lord's paschal solemnity in this way listening to his word and celebrating the mysteries then we shall have the sure hope of sharing his triumph over death and living with him in god christ yesterday and today the beginning and the end the alpha and the omega all time belongs to him and all ages to him be glory and power through every age and forever amen by his holy and glorious wounds may christ the lord guard us and protect us amen may the light of christ rising with glory dispel the darkness in our hearts and minds foreign uh [Music] us exalt let them exalt the hosts of heaven exalt late angel ministers of god exalt let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty kings triumph be glad let earth be glad as glory floods her ablaze with the light from her eternal king let all corners of the earth be glad knowing an end to gloom and darkness rejoice let mother church also rejoice arrayed with the lightning of his glory let this holy building shake with joy filled with the mighty voices of the peoples lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just with ardent love of mind and heart and with devoted service of our voice to acclaim our god invisible the almighty father and jesus christ our lord his son his only begotten who for our sake paid adam's debt to the eternal father and pouring out his own dear blood wiped clean the record of our ancient sinfulness these then are the feasts of passover in which he slain the lamb the one true lamb whose blood annoys the doorposts of believers this is the night when once you let our forebears israel's children from slavery in egypt and made them past rishard through the red sea this is the night that with a pillar of fire banish the darkness of sin this is the night that even now throughout the world sets christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin leading them to grace and joining them to his holy ones the is the night when christ broke the prison bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld our birth would have been no gain had we not been redeemed oh no wonder of your humble care for us o love o charity beyond all telling to ransom a slave you gave away your son o truly necessary sin of adam destroyed completely by the death of christ o happy fault that and so great so glorious oh truly blessed night worthy alone to know the time and hour when christ rose from the underworld this is the night of which it is written the night shall be as bright as day dazzling is the night for me and full of gladness the sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness washes faults away restores innocence to the fallen and joy to mourners drives out hatred fastest and brings down the mighty on this your night of grace o holy father accept this candle a solemn offering the work of bees and of your servants hands an evening sacrifice of praise this gift from your most holy church but now we know the praises of this pillar which glowing fire ignites for god's honor a fire into many flames divided yet never dimmed by sharing of its light for it is fed by melting wax drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious oh truly blessed night when things of heaven are wed to those of earth and divine to the human therefore o lord we pray you that this hallowed to the honor of your name may perseverance to overcome the darkness of this night receive it as a pleasing fragrance and let it mingle with the lights of heaven [Music] may this flame be found still burning by the morning star the one morning star who never said christ your son who coming back from death's domain has shed his peaceful light on humanity and lives and reigns forever and ever dear brothers and sisters now that we have begun our solemn vigil let us listen with quiet hearts to the word of god let us meditate on how god in time saves his people and in these the last days has sent his son as our redeemer let us pray that our god may complete this paschal work of salvation please be seated a reading from the book of genesis in the beginning when god created the heavens and the earth god said let us make man in our image after our likeness let them have dominion over the fish of the sea the birds of the air in the cattle and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground god created man in his image in the image of god he created him male and female he created them god blessed them saying be fertile and multiply fill the earth and subdue it have dominion over the fish of the sea the birds of the air and all the living things that move on the earth god also said see i give you every seed bearing plant all over the earth and every tree that has seed burning fruit on it to be your food and to all the animals of the land all the birds of the air and all the living creatures that crawl on the ground i give all the green plants for food and so it had happened god looked at everything he had made and found it very good the word of the lord lord send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth lord send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth spirit and renew the face of the earth bless the lord my soul oh lord my god you are great indeed how manifold are your works oh lord the earth is full of your redeemed understand that there exists nothing more marvelous than the world's creation in the beginning except that at the end of the ages christ our passover has been sacrificed who lives and reigns forever and ever amen please be seated a reading from the book of genesis god put abraham to the test he called to him abraham here i am he replied and then god said take your son isaac your only one whom you love and go to the land of moriah there you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that i will point out for you early the next morning abraham saddled his donkey took with him his son isaac and two of his servants as well and with the wood that he had cut for the holocaust set out for the place of which god had told him on the third day abraham got sight of the place from afar and then he said to his servants both of you stay here with this donkey while the boy and i go over yonder while the boy we will worship and then i will come back to you thereupon abraham took the wood for the holocaust and laid it on his son isaac's shoulders while he himself carried the fire and the knife as the two walked on together isaac spoke to his father abraham father isaac said yes son he replied isaac continued here is the fire in the wood but where is the sheep for the holocaust son abraham answered god himself will provide the sheep for the holocaust and then the two continued going forward when they came to the place of which god had told him abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it next he tied up his son isaac and put him on top of the wood on the altar then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son but the lord's messenger called out to him from heaven abraham abraham here i am he answered do not lay your hand on the boy said the messenger do not do the least thing to him i know now how devoted you are to god since you did not withhold from me your only beloved son as abraham looked about he spied a ram caught by its thorns in the thicket so he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son abraham named the site yahweh yere hence people now say on the mountain the lord will see again the lord's messenger called to abraham from heaven and said i swear by myself declares the lord that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son i will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies and in your descendants all nations of the earth shall find blessing all this because you obeyed my command the word of the lord [Music] you are my inheritance o lord [Music] you are my inheritance oh lord you are my inheritance lord o lord my lotted portion and my cup you it is who hold fast my love i set the lord ever before me with him at my right hand i shall not be disturbed you are my inheritance oh lord therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices my body too abides in confidence because you will not abandon my soul to the never world nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption you are my inheritance oh lord you will show me the path to life fullness of joys in your presence the delights at your right hand forever [Music] you are my inheritance oh lord [Music] let us pray oh god supreme father of the faithful who increased the children of your promise by pouring out the grace of adoption throughout the whole world and who through the paschal mystery make your servant abraham father of nations as once you swore grant we pray that your peoples may enter worthily into the grace to which you call them through christ our lord [Music] a reading from the book of exodus the lord said to moses why are you crying out to me tell the israelites to go forward and you lift up your staff and with your hand outstretched over the sea split the sea in two that the israelites may pass through it on dry land but i will make the egyptians so obstinate that they will go in after them then i will receive glory through pharaoh and all his army his chariots and charioteers the egyptians shall know that i am the lord when i receive glory through pharaoh and his chariots and charioteers the angel of god who had been leading israel's camp now moved and went around behind them the column of cloud also leaving the front took up its place behind them so that it came between the camp of the egyptians and that of israel but the cloud now became dark and thus the night passed without the rival camps coming any closer together all night long then moses stretched out his hand over the sea and the lord swept the sea with a strong east wind throughout the night and so were turned into dry land when the water was thus divided the israelites marched into the mist of the sea on dry land with the water like a wall to the right and to their left the egyptians followed in pursuit all pharaoh's horses and chariots and charioteers went after them right into the midst of the sea in the night watch just before dawn the lord cast through the column of the fiery cloud upon the egyptian force a glance that threw it into a panic and so he clogged their chariot wheels that they could hardly drive with that the egyptians sounded the retreat before israel because the lord was fighting for them against the egyptians then the lord told moses stretch out your hand over the sea that the water may flow back upon the egyptians upon their chariots and their charioteers so moses stretched out his hand over the sea and at dawn the sea flowed back to its normal depth the egyptians were fleeing head-on toward the sea when the lord hurled them into the mist as the water flowed back it covered the chariots and the charioteers of pharaoh's whole army which had followed the israelites into the sea not a single one of them escaped but the israelites had marched on dry land through the mists of the sea with the water like a wall to the right and to their left thus the lord saved israel on that day from the power of the egyptians when israel saw the egyptians lying dead on the seashore and beheld the great power that the lord had shown against the egyptians they feared the lord and believed in him and in his servant moses then moses and the israelites sang this song to the lord i will sing to the lord for he is gloriously triumphant horse and chariot he has cast into the sea the word of the lord thanks be to god let us sing to the lord who is covered in wondrous glory [Music] let the us who is covered in wondrous glory let us sing to the lord who is covered in wondrous glory i will sing to the lord in glory triumphant horse and rider are thrown to the sea god of strength of song of salvation god of mine hear these praises let us sing to the lord who is covered in wondrous glory my god is a warrior whose name is the lord pharaoh's army is thrown to the sea your right hand is magnificent in power your right hand has crushed the enemy let us sing to the lord who is covered in wondrous glory in your mercy you led the people you redeemed you brought them to your sacred home there you will plant them on the mountain that is yours the lord shall reign forever let us sing to the lord who is covered in wondrous glory [Music] let us pray [Music] o god who ancient wonders remain undimmed in splendor even in our day for what she once bestowed in a single people freeing them from marrow a pharaoh's persecution by the power of your right hand now you bring about as the salvation of the nations through the waters of rebirth grant we pray that the whole world may become children of abraham and inherit the dignity of israel's birthright through christ our lord hmm reading from the book of the prophet isaiah thus says the lord all you who are thirsty come to the water you who have no money come receive grain and eat come without paying and without cost drink wine and milk why spend your money for what is not bred your wages for what fails to satisfy heed me and you shall eat well you shall delight in rich fair come to me heedfully listen that you may have life i will renew with you the everlasting covenant the benefits assured to david as i made him a witness to the peoples a leader and commander of nations so shall you summon a nation you knew not and nations that you that knew you not shall run to you because of the lord your god the holy one of israel who has glorified you seek the lord while he may be found call him while he is near let the scoundrel forsake his way and the wicked man his thoughts let him turn to the lord for mercy to our god who is generous and forgiving for my thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways my ways says the lord as high as the heavens are above the earth so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts for just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there until they have watered the earth making it fertile and fruitful giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth my word who by the preaching of your prophets unveiled the mysteries of this present age graciously increase the longing of your people for only at the prompting of your grace to the faithful progress in any holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father [Music] amen glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to people of good will let us pray o god who make this most sacred night radiant with the glory of the lord's resurrection stir up in your church a spirit of adoption so that renewed in body and mind we may render you undivided service through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the letter of saint paul to the romans brothers and sisters are you unaware that we who were baptized into christ jesus were baptized into his death we were indeed buried with him through baptism into death so that just as christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father we too might live in newness of life for if we have grown into union with him through a death like his we shall also be united with him in the resurrection we know that our old self was crucified with him so that our sinful body might be done away with that we might no longer be in slavery to sin for a dead person has been absolved from sin if then we have died with christ we believe that we shall also live with him we know that christ raised from the dead dies no more death no longer has power over him as to his death he died to sin [Music] [Music] this is the day that the lord has made rejoice and be glad let us feast with joy in the lord [Music] oh [Music] the lord be with you with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark when the sabbath was over mary magdalene mary the mother of james and solomay brought spices so that they might go and anoint him very early when the sun had risen on the first day of the week they came to the tomb they were saying to one another who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb when they looked up they saw that the stone had been rolled back it was very large on entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side clothed in a white robe and they were utterly amazed he said to them do not be amazed you seek jesus of nazareth the crucified he has been raised he is not here behold the place where they laid him but go and tell his disciples in peter he is going before you to galilee there you will see him as you were told the gospel of the lord [Music] alleluia christ is risen that's always been for two thousand years the christian proclamation the heart of christianity christ is risen that's the gospel not just christ's message or his teachings or his memory or his cause lives on but jesus christ lives he is risen and that's the reality that begins to dawn on those who first come to jesus's tomb following his violent crucifixion this evening we hear from the gospel according to saint mark and tomorrow morning at the easter sunday morning masses will hear from the gospel of saint john but they in the other gospels they are powerful accounts of the varied insights of them into this mysterious event that the world could never have imagined for example in the gospel of john on the first easter morning on the third day after jesus death we're told that one of his faithful followers mary of magdala came to the tomb and we're told this in the gospel of god john that she came while it was still dark now that's the gospel of john's signal for us to go deeper to a deeper place to a deeper kind of darkness that envelops mary's mind and heart it's actually the kind of darkness that more than probably a few of us have experienced in our life when we've suddenly lost a loved one yet when she arrives at the tomb to her astonishment she she sees that the entrance stone has been already removed and so she looks in into an empty tomb and of course she concludes what we would conclude she concludes the worst the grave robbers have surely come and stolen the body of the lord her lord and so she runs back to simon peter and another disciple who we traditionally know as saint john and she tells them the grim and disturbing news as she reports it they have taken the lord from the tomb and now peter and john run out to the tomb so has that ever happened to you [Music] when your love for another has prompted you to run to act now to leave aside everything and to respond yes the two disciples are running to verify a grave robbery not a resurrection they could never have imagined such a thing but could it be that something in them is beginning to awaken that love awakens in them some possibility even in the midst of death maybe they begin to remember you know didn't jesus tell us many times that he would rise three days later and isn't this the beginning of the third day and didn't our god who said let there be light and created the dome of the skies above and separated the water from the dry land and created living creatures of the sea and all kinds of animals upon the earth and man and woman in his image and likeness didn't our god deliver our ancestor noah from the flood and didn't god deliver our people from egypt long ago and didn't god delivered to david from goliath and our ancestors from exile didn't jesus himself raise the dead to life and doesn't god promise through his word to deliver the just and upright before him something starts to happen in them to them maybe they actually begin to believe that god's deliverance can happen to them in their lives in this circumstance on this day maybe somehow god can transform their loss into gain their curse into a blessing maybe even the death of the one they love can somehow turn into life it seems that people in love always believe that is that true so maybe you've been told in your life you're going to get through this but deep down you fear that you won't you wonder will the yelling ever stop or the pain ever leave will this gray sky ever brighten will this load ever lighten will i ever escape the failure of my past the temptation that is slate enslaves me the message of easter is yes for all those who run to the lord in love who come to know him and follow him and obey his commandments and persevere with him the answer is yes it seems like this is what john was beginning to experience at the empty tomb of jesus we're told he looked into the tomb he saw and believed i mean clearly he didn't understand it all he didn't make sense of it all no but his faith is not yet perfected but he does believe he takes the first step from fear to faith from death to life and from darkness to light to believe that god can deliver us deliver me today right here in this place in my life in this time that god is the god of the living and not of the dead and the same thing would happen to many many more of the disciples in the time to come we the baptized here in the church this evening we are to be counted among them see what happened to all of these early witnesses of the resurrection is meant to happen to every one of us in our life you know in fact it will happen in just a few moments to our seven elect those preparing for baptism and then the five of our sisters already baptized one with us in the faith their life your life will be changed because you have been changed by christ our risen lord yes what happens to all these witnesses to the resident christ at first it seemed an impossibility but because of christ's resurrection they became witnesses of the possibilities of god christians more than anyone else today should be people of possibility in light of the resurrection of christ our churches should be sanctuaries of what is possible but isn't it true that maybe all too often we reflect kind of the spirit of our age we can become negative with our gaze downward as if we're looking into a tomb lacking joy and behaving like people of impossibility you know pessimism and his twin brother cynicism they belong to slaves we're not slaves and we're not victims we are children of god and we're brothers and sisters of our risen lord so today is this evening as we begin easter we're called to stand upright and to sing alleluia and to mean it and to profess a rock-solid solid faith in the risen lord victorious even over death itself now once received an easter card a number of years ago had a message on the cover may you leave behind you a string of empty tombs i've always liked that this is both my easter wish and my hope for us all because after we've all been through this last year really isn't it time isn't that time that we finally open our mouths and we're beginning to sing again to be people a possibility because god is to believe again that christ the son of the living god is risen more than ever let us place our faith in the risen lord because as he declares to us i make all things new [Music] dealer beloved with one heart and one soul let us by our prayers now come to the aid of these our sister sisters and brothers in their blessed hope so that as they approach the font of rebirth the almighty father may bestow on them all his merciful help [Music] lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy [Music] holy mary mother of god pray for us saint michael holy angels of god saint john the baptist saint joseph saint peter and saint paul saint andrew saint john saint mary magdalene saint stephen saint ignatius of antioch saint laurence saint santarisa of calcutta all your holy men and women pray for us centers of lessons saint nicholas saint bernadette saint monica saint philomena all holy men and women the saints of the living god all you holy men and women pray for us lord be merciful save your people from all evil from every sin from everlasting death by your incarnation by your death and resurrection by the outpouring of the holy spirit [Music] be merciful to us sinners bring these chosen ones to new birth through the grace of baptism jesus son of the living god [Music] christ hear us lord jesus hear our prayers almighty ever living god be present by the mysteries of your great love and send forth the spirit of adoption to create the new peoples brought to birth for you in the fun to baptism so that what is to be carried out by our humble service may be brought to fulfillment by your mighty power through christ our lord o god who by invisible power accomplish a wonderful effect through sacramental signs and who in many ways have prepared water your creation to show forth the grace of baptism o god whose spirit in the first moments the world's creation hovered over the water so that the very substance of water would then take to itself the power to sanctify oh god who by the outpouring of the flood foreshadowed regeneration so that from the mystery of one and the same element of water would come to an end to vice and a beginning of virtue o god who caused the children of abraham to pass dryshad through the red sea so that the chosen people set free from slavery to pharaoh would prefigure the people of the baptized o god whose son baptized by john in the waters of the jordan was anointed with the holy spirit and as he hung upon the cross gave forth water from his side along with blood and after his resurrection commanded his disciples go forth teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit look now we pray upon the face of your church and graciously unseal for her the fountain of baptism may this water received by the holy spirit the grace of your only begotten son so that human nature created in your image and washed clean through the sacrament of baptism for all the squalor of life of old may be found worthy to rise to the life of newborn children through water and the holy spirit may the power of the holy spirit o lord we pray come down through your son into the fullness of this font so that all who are buried with christ by baptism into death may rise again in life with him who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the baptism so that we might walk with him in newness of life and so now that our lenten observance is concluded let us renew the promises of holy baptism by which we once renounce satan and his works and
