hi everyone and welcome back to the channel this is david hyman your tour guide in israel today's tour in jeru is in jerusalem the church of the holy sepulchre the church is open for visits every day of the week from 5 p a.m until 9 00 pm no admission fee is required and no reservations are needed the church is located in the christian quarter within the walls of jerusalem's old city there's no vehicle access to the church the easiest approach is a 10-minute walk from jaffa gate the church is one of the oldest churches in the world built in the early 4th century by queen helena mother of emperor constantine [Music] the outlines of the church we see today and the stonework and the facade with the four arches are from the crusader period 12th century a.d to the six christian denominations that share this church it contains the two holiest sites in christianity golgotha or calvary where jesus was crucified and the empty tomb where he was buried and then resurrected in certain languages the church is called the church of the resurrection [Music] the final stations of the cross from station 10 to 14 are located within the church so the first part of the tour i will point them out starting here at station number 10 which is up the stairs on the right side of the door just before you enter station number 10 jesus is stripped of his garments this chapel called the chapel of the franks has been recently renovated and it's possible to look through the glass window and on the left you can see part of the original crusader gold mosaic from the 12th century before we enter let's look carefully at these ancient doors the marks of the pilgrim pilgrims from all countries are dating back to the middle ages the doors doors are still locked each night by two muslim families who have been handed this assignment by sultan saladin 800 years ago let us now enter and head first up the stairs to calvary in hebrew golgotha which means the skull the calvary is divided between two denominations the latin catholic church is on the right side and the greek orthodox church owned the left side of the chapel the mosaics in the latin side are from the 1930s and here on the right you can see a scene from the book of genesis chapter 22 the binding of isaac by abraham and the angel holding on to his hand above them you can see king david holding a parchment with words from psalm number 22 they have pierced my hands and my feet and a little further on you can see the only mosaic on the roof which is from the crusader period so this is the origin this uh medallion with jesus the ascension is original crusader mosaic the 11th station jesus is nailed to the cross stations number 12 and 13 are side by side station 13 jesus is taken down from the cross is marked by this statue of our lady of sorrows and it is owned by the franciscan order right next to it you can see a glass case covering some of the rocks of calvary the original mountain the rock of golgotha and right next to that that is where you will see an altar with greek writing on it and behind it a crucifix and this altar which is on the greek orthodox side is the 12th station where jesus dies on the cross it is possible to go under the altar and then reach your hand and touch the rocks of calvary [Music] the staircase will then lead you down from calvary from the mountain of golgotha right below it there's the chapel of adam the first man you see behind the glass case the rocks of calvary with a crack from the earthquake and the blood of christ seeped through the rock to redeem adam's original sin in many artwork you will see skull immediately below the cross that usually portrays the skull of adam the first human the mosaic in front of you shows you the final scenes of the stations dying on the cross removed from the cross and entered into the tomb the stone in front of the entrance is called the stone of unction or the stone of anointing it marks the place where the body of jesus was placed while preparing for burial the preparation would have be have been done according to the jewish law anointed with oil and water and then wrapped with linen and shrouds preparing the body to be placed in the tomb before the sabbath starts we will now enter the rotunda and we will see the edicule the stone marble structure that covers the tomb of jesus the empty tomb this will be the 14th station jesus is laid in the tomb [Music] uh [Music] the edicule was built by the greek orthodox church at the year 1810 to protect the stone tomb that that was the place where jesus was buried and the exact location of the resurrection inside the etiquette there are two small chapels the first one is called the chapel of the angel and there is a small box with a piece of the rock that was used to close the tomb and the inside chamber is the actual tomb the empty tomb of jesus [Music] behind the edicule there is a chapel owned by the coptic church the egyptians and from there you can turn left and go between two of these columns and enter a small chapel the chapel of joseph of arimathea and there's a door that you can enter and examine an original first century burial tomb carved in the rock of jerusalem and this way you can experience what the actual tomb would have been [Music] join me now down to the armenian chapel dedicated to queen helena this chapel has artwork from the story of the armenian church the paintings you can see on the left are paintings with the story of how the armenian nation converted to the christian faith in the year 301 they are the first christian nation that adopted the faith the gregory the illuminator is portrayed here baptizing the king of the armenians and all the armenian people to the christian faith on the floor you can see the mosaic with the noah's ark and above it mount ararat which is in armenia and is the sacred mountain to the armenians now continue down these stairs to the lowest part of the church of the holy sepulchre the chapel of the finding of the cross in the first century queen helena visits jerusalem on a personal pilgrimage and she is shown the site of jesus's tomb and also the place where the cross was kept it was in a quarry this painting you can see the quarry the people are working and the cross is right down inside that cave a woman is asked to touch all the pieces of wood and the true cross heals her wounds you can see that this chapel is carved in the natural rock of jerusalem you can see the negatives or the imprints of rocks that were removed pointing out that this place was indeed an ancient quarry [Music] so the beautifully decorated dome of the chapel of helena has another surprise if you can make your way outside the church and find the path that leads up to the roof there is a surprise you will find a monastery this is the monastery of the ethiopian church it is called deer and sultan and there are 25 ethiopian monks that live here in pretty very spartan conditions these tiny cells each ethiopian monk lives in one of these small cells the church is divided between six christian denominations the ethiopian church is one of them they own this very small and humble chapel within the chapel you'll find an interesting painting with king solomon greeting the queen of sheba who comes to visit him and brings him gifts from africa underneath there's another small chapel and from here you can return back to the main courtyard of the church of the holy sepulchre [Music] so everyone i hope you enjoyed our tour of the church of the holy sepulchre in
