[Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] see [Music] one love released i am the bread of life [Music] one oh in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion and friendship of god's holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit as we come together to celebrate these sacred mysteries we humble ourselves and call to mind the times we have failed to live in that relationship of love with god and neighbor lord jesus you came to reconcile us to the father and to one another lord have mercy lord have mercy you heal the wounds of sin and division christ have mercy christ have mercy you intercede for us with the father lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins bring us to everlasting life amen glory to god in the house and on earth peace to people of good will we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father amen let us pray almighty ever living god who in the abundance of your kindness surpass the merits and desires of those who entreat you pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads and to give what prayer does not dare us through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of genesis the lord god said it is not good that the man should be alone i will make him a helpmate so from the soil the lord god fashioned all the wild beasts and all the birds of heaven these he brought to the man to see what he would call them each one was to bear the name the man would give it the man gave names to all the cattle all the birds of heaven and all the wild beasts but no help made suitable for man was found for him so the lord god made the man fall into a deep sleep and while he slept he took one of his ribs and enclosed it in flesh the lord god built the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man the man exclaimed this at last is born from my bones and flesh from my flesh this is to be called woman for this was taken from man this is why a man leaves his father and mother and joins himself to his wife and they become one body the word of the lord thanks be to god all the days of our lives [Music] may the [Music] our lord blessed are you who fear the lord who walk in his ways for you shall eat the fruit of your handwork blessed shall you be [Music] days of our lives your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home your children like olive plants around your table [Music] make the lord [Music] behold this is the man blessed who fears the lord the lord bless you from zion may you see the prosperity of jerusalem all the days of your life [Music] may you see your children's children peace be upon israel may the lord [Music] a reading from the letter to the hebrews we see in jesus one who was for a short while made lower than the angels and is now crowned with glory and splendor because he submitted to death by god's grace he had to experience death for all mankind as it was his purpose to bring a great many of his sons into glory it was appropriate that god for whom everything exists and through whom everything exists should make perfect through suffering the leader who would take them to their salvation for the one who sanctifies and the ones who are sanctified are of the same stock that is why he openly calls them brothers the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] if we love one another god remains in us and his love is brought to perfection [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit this proclamation taken from the holy gospel according to sin mark glory to you some pharisees approached jesus and asked is it against the law for man to divorce his wife they were testing him he answered them what did moses command you moses allowed us they said to draw up a writ of dismissal and so to divorce then jesus said to them it was because you were so unteachable that he wrote this commandment for you but from the beginning of creation god made them male and female this is why a man must leave father and mother and the two become one body they are no longer two therefore but one body so then what god has united man must not divide back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this and he said to them the man who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her and if a woman divorces her husband and marries another she is guilty of adultery too people were bringing little children to him for him to touch them the disciples turned them away but when jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them let the little children come to me do not stop them for it is to such as these that the kingdom of god belongs i tell you solemnly anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of god like a little child will never enter then he put his arms around him laid his hands on them and gave them his blessings the good news the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ i wonder what made the pharisees ask this question about divorce what was the context we don't really know all we know is that they were on a journey from kapanam to judea and he was preaching about the kingdom of god and he kept making references to the child as being the least in the kingdom and the greatest so why this christian about divorce it wasn't a marriage seminar that they were on their way to but maybe last sunday's gospel may just give us a clue it gave me a clue we saw someone not one of us exercising we tried to stop him remember that one not one of us maybe they wanted to know whether jesus was one of them on their side let me explain they've been so much talk about schools this day which is the better school all schools are good schools aura labora you know but seriously you see in the time of jesus there were two rabbinic schools regarding moses's writ of dismissal the school of rabbi shami where divorce was only allowed if she was guilty of sexual infidelity or something very serious like that she nothing about him and on the school of rabbi hillel they were more liberal about divorce the hillel school thought that a man could offer a writ of divorce for any reason he was dissatisfied with his wife a burnt meal right or even if she just overcooked it it was legitimate grounds for putting her away for divorcing her so maybe they wanted to know whose side are you on jesus which school do you subscribe to hey don't we sometimes use the same technique to win over arguments who's on my side we list the names of people who agree with us jesus breaks from all this and reveals himself as the teacher through whom we are to understand the scriptures right from the beginning god's intent and purpose about relationships in jesus society women rarely if ever owned property or had any independent means of living marriage was a savior it meant a guarantee of support for the most vulnerable members of society women and children for their sakes marriage had to be stable in other words women and children should not be easily discarded thrown aside left unattended unprotected remember the call always to come to the aid of orphans and widows so you see in criticizing those who advocated divorce there were many who did jesus was putting himself as always on the side of the weak and the vulnerable he was coming down squarely on the side of the defenses seeing in this context jesus's words are consistent with his gentle mercy and his teaching of the kingdom fast forward to today today perhaps the social context of marriage is quite different from jesus's times in a world of individual rights let alone women's rights marriage and love is often about experiences feelings rather than choices and commitments we live in a world where people make and break promises so easily and for a variety of reasons some have felt that it was necessary to break their marriage vows and divorce you know recently there was a famous couple after 27 years of marriage who said and made a statement we no longer believe we can grow as a couple in the next phase of our lives i'm sure that after 27 years the pain suffering betrayal disappointment are still felt no matter how much money there was in the settlement and today some feel as defenseless and unprotected in a divorce just as women and children in jesus time were and today it could very well sometimes be the man yes we have laws the women's charter tries to protect laws try to make it fair mediation processes try to assist but if we look deeply into what this gospel is all about we realize it goes far beyond divorce and rights it's about the true intent of covenantal relationships expressing and reflecting god in its oneness this means that we are to understand that it takes three to make up a relationship god and the couple you know marriage is the one sacrament that the priests cannot minister the ministers of marriage are actually a couple themselves he ministers christ to her dying to himself for better or worse she ministers christ to him dying to herself for richer or poorer the priest or the deacon merely presides the couple ministers christ to each other and therefore that bond is the covenant of god who establishes that relationship male and female he made them in his image is this really how we prepare for marriage do we marry for ego our needs finding marriage a savior of security in our old age some to have that fairytale wedding in church and to instagram it i know that it's a lot more complex and we honestly probably marry for a variety of reasons but eventually in a sacramental union that love has to be purified to reflect the oneness of god in a culture of individualism they sell them a third party at any wedding sadly the focus is entirely on the individual self and one expects the other to fulfill themselves with every physical sexual emotional material fulfillment and when they don't it's time for divorce an impossible task where god is not part of the whole equation in that relationship we make clay gods of each other rather than allow god to be that covenantal love that binds us together our relationships are to reflect this oneness and purpose we don't do it alone adam found that his true companion was from his side this at last is bone from my bone flesh from my flesh man and woman standing equal created for each other reflecting the god who created them it's about the dignity of each person the equality of each one before god jesus defended two groups in a society that had no defense he's against the discarding of wives or denying children their right of place let the children come to me there's no tolerance for discrimination or power plays if we think this mindset is no longer true in our society just look again wasn't it just recently that we're coming up with white papers to establish laws to combat toxic masculinity just think of the highly pornographic culture in which we objectify women and men monetize it use it manipulate one another with it have we come that far from those rabbinic schools of hilal and chami in jesus days we need to work through relationships to see and respect one another today there's a lot more schools than the schools of hilal and chami there's so many schools of thought today that influences relationships gender marriage if we look at all these challenges we realize that often we too could be like the disciples like the pharisees asking jesus whose side are you on when in truth we are to stand on his side rather than ask him to stand on ours and he makes us very clear and uncompromising he invites us to enter into the word of god from the beginning of time god's intent in relationships may we have the wisdom the courage the perseverance and the humility to seek the help we need because it is not easy to work through relationships to build and to reflect this covenantal faithful love of god the archdiocese the parish has agencies and maybe there are some even beyond maybe we need to reach out to work together standing side by side working not against the world but working together to love each other for the betterment of the world in this way we stand on the side of god i believe in god the father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in jesus christ his only son our lord who was conceived by the holy spirit born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of god the father almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead i believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting amen god our father creator of the universe look upon us with your unconditional love as we place our needs before you for the church that we will rejoice and celebrate the generous love that god has lavished on us in christ and that we share this profound love with others we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for religious and political leaders in the world that they be guided by the holy spirit to perceive the truth of situations that they work towards justice and peace in their spaces of influence we pray to the lord lord hear our for all peoples and communities that we will deeply recognize be a part of the global house of creation and desire a harmonious relationship with our surroundings and neighbors we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who have lost their jobs and livelihood that they will be comforted and sustained and given concrete help to see them through their anxieties we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for married couples that they grow constant in their love and when they experience trials and difficulties know that with the grace and help of god's holy spirit and friends around that they will work towards that constancy to reflect the covenantal love of god that they be given the grace and strength that they need we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer loving and merciful god shepherd us to do your will to be faithful stewards of all you have given us in jesus name we pray amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for it is through your goodness that we have this bread and wine to offer fruit of the earth fruit of the vine work of human hands they will become for us our spiritual food and drink blessed be god forever pray my sisters my brothers pray that your offering your sacrifice and mine here may be acceptable to god our mighty and merciful father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church except o lord we pray the sacrifices instituted by your commands and through the sacred mysteries which we celebrate with dutiful service graciously complete the sanctifying work by which you are pleased to redeem us through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord and let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just to give you thanks to raise to you a hymn of glory and praise o lord father of infinite goodness for by the word of your son's gospel you have brought together one church from every people tongue and nation and having filled her with life by the power of your spirit you never cease through her to gather the whole human race into one manifesting the covenant of your love she dispenses without seizing the blessed hope of your kingdom and shines bright as the sign of your faithfulness which in christ jesus our lord your promise would last for eternity and so with all the powers of heaven we worship you constantly on earth while with all the church as one voice we are [Music] heaven and earth [Music] [Music] who comes [Music] you are indeed holy and to be glorified oh god who love the human race and who always walk with us on the journey of life bless indeed is your son present in our midst when we are gathered by his love and when as once for the disciples so now for us he opens the scriptures and breaks the bread therefore father most merciful we ask that you send forth your holy spirit to sanctify these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer on the night of the last supper he took bread and said the blessing broke the bread gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice gave you thanks gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore holy father as we celebrate the memorial of christ your son our savior whom you let through his passion and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection and whom you have seated at your right hand we proclaim the work of your love until he comes again and we offer you the bread of life and the chalice of blessing look with favor on the oblation of your church in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of christ that has been handed on to us and grant that by the power of the spirit of your love we may be counted now and until the day of eternity among the members of your son in whose body and blood we have communion lord renew your church here by the light of the gospel strengthen the bond of unity between the faithful and the pastors of your people together with francis our pope william our bishop that in a world torn by strife your people may shine forth as a prophetic sign of unity and concord remember our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the peace of your christ and all the dead whose faith you alone have known admit them to rejoice in the light of your face and in the resurrection give them the fullness of life grant also to us when our earthly pilgrimage is done that we may come to an eternal dwelling place and live with you forever there in communion with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the apostles and martyrs with saints francis and clare and with all the saints we shall praise and exalt you through jesus christ your son for it is through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever oh man day that by the help of your mercy we may be free from sin safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope in coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] now [Music] lord jesus christ you said to your apostles peace peace i leave you my peace i give to you look not on our sin but look on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and
