you got to go and dig those hoes with broken hands and withered souls emancipated from all you know hi i'm micah and welcome back to michael reeds today we are continuing holes and we are on chapter 38. stanley took hold of zero's forearms and pulled him upright then he stooped down and let zero fall over his right shoulder he stood up lifting zero's worn out body off the ground he left the shovel and sack of jars behind as he continued up the mountain zero's legs dangled in front of him stanley couldn't see his feet which made it difficult to walk through the tangled patches of weeds and vines he concentrated on one step at a time carefully right raising and setting down each foot he thought about only about each step and not the impossible task that lay before him higher and higher he climbed his strength came from somewhere deep inside himself and also seemed to come from outside as well after focusing on big thumb for so long it was as if the rocket absorbed his energy and now acted like some kind of giant magnet pulling him towards it after a while he became aware of a foul odor at first his thought was that it came from zero but it seemed to be in the air hanging heavy all around him he also noticed that the ground wasn't as steep anymore as the ground flattened a huge stone precipice rose up ahead of him they are just barely visible in the moonlight it seemed to grow bigger with each step he took it no longer resembled a thumb and he knew he'd never be able to climb it around him the smell became stronger it was the bitter smell of despair even if he could somehow climb big thumb he knew he wouldn't find water how could there be water at the top of a giant rock the weeds and bugs survived only by an occasional rainstorm like the one he had seen from the camp still he continued towards it if nothing else he wanted to at least reach the thumb he never made it his feet slipped out from under him zero's head knocked against the back of his shoulder and he fell and tumbled into a small muddy gully as he lay face down in the muddy ditch he didn't know if he'd ever get up again he didn't know if he'd even try had he come all this way to you need water to make mud he crawled around the gully in the direction that seemed the muddiest the ground became gloppier the mud splashed up as he slapped the ground using both hands he dug a hole in the soggy soil and it was too dark to see but he thought he could feel a tiny pool of water at the bottom of the hole he stuck his head in the hole and licked the dirt he dug deeper and as he did so more water seemed to fill the hole he couldn't see it but he could feel it first with his fingers then with his tongue he dug until he had a hole that was about as deep as his arm was long there he was enough water for him to scoop out with his hands and drop on zero's face zero's eyes remained closed but his tongue poked out between his lips searching out the droplets stanley dragged zero closer to the hole he dug then scooped out more water and let it pour out of his hands into zero's mouth as he continued to widen his hole his hands came across a smooth round object it was too smooth and too round to be a rock he wiped the dirt off it and realized it was an onion he'd been into it without peeling it the hot bitter juice burst into his mouth he could feel it all the way up to his eyes and when he swallowed he felt his he felt its warmth move down his throat and into his stomach he only ate half he gave the other half to zero here eat this what is it zero whispered a hot fudge sundae and that is the end of chapter 38 this chapter was about the impossible task of climbing the rest of the way up the mountain because zero had collapsed instead of leaving him stanley threw him over his shoulder left the shovel left the bag full of jars and just went up the mountain and as he goes up the mountain like this steepness it kind of tapers off into kind of more of a plateau type thing and he finally gets to the top of the plateau and there he sees that giant 50 tall rock 50 foot tall rock in front of him that makes up the thumb part of the thumb because he's on this flat part of the thumb here and so he looks at that and says there's no way i'm going to make it up there that's too high it's too steep i'll never make it to the top and there's no way there's water up there and so he kind of like slips or trips or just collapses under the weight of feeling like he failed and falls into a kind of a ditch full of mud and as he's laying in this ditch full of mud he's like wait a minute you need water to make mud and so he starts scooping he like scrambles along the ground in the mud and scoops out a deep hole like two and a half to three feet deep and starts sipping out of the water the dirty muddy water at the bottom of the hole giving himself a little bit more energy just a little bit more for himself um he's like this isn't the end like this is clearly a positive and so he scoops out some of it and like pours it on zero and zero's got his tongue out a little bit and he's like oh good water and then uh as he's like barely being helped here by the little droplets of water that are landing on his tongue uh stanley has an onion and he eats half of it because he he when he was digging his mud hole he found an onion in there and he eats half of it and he's like i can uh here's zero have the other half and zero's like what is it and he's like it's an ice cream sundae basically saying hey here's what we've been looking for a means to survive uh which is which is good and so that's all we have for chapter 38 looking good so far let's jump into chapter 39 stanley awoke in a heave in a meadow looking up at the giant rock tower it was layered and streaked with different shades of red burnt orange brown and tan it must have been over 100 feet tall stanley lay a while just looking at it he didn't have the strength to get up it felt like the inside of his mouth and throat were coated with sand and no wonder when he rolled over he saw the water hole it was about two and a half feet deep and over three feet wide at the bottom lay no more than two inches of very brown water his hand and fingers were sore from digging especially under his fingernails he scooped some dirty water into his mouth and swished it around trying to filter it with his teeth zero moaned stan lee started to say something to him but no words came out of his mouth and he had to try again how are you doing it hurt to talk not good zero said quietly with great effort he rolled over raised himself to his knees and crawled to the waterhole he lowered his head into it and lapped up some water then he jerked back clutched his knees to his chest and rolled onto his side and his body shook violently stanley thought about going back down the mountain to look for a shovel for the shovel so he could make the water hole deeper maybe that would give them cleaner water they could use the jars as drinking glasses but he didn't think he had the strength to go down let alone make it back up again and he didn't know where to look he struggled to his feet he was in a field of greenish white flowers that seemed to extend all the way around the big thumb he took a deep breath and then walked the last 50 yards to the giant precipice and touched it tag you're it he walked back to zero in the waterhole on the way he picked one of the flowers it actually wasn't one big flower he discovered but instead each flower was a cluster of tiny little flowers that formed a round ball he rode it to his mouth but had to spit it out he could see part of the trail it made he had made the night before when he carried zero up the mountain if he was going to head back down and look for the shovel he realized he should do it soon while the trail was fresh but he didn't want to leave zero he was afraid zero might die when he was gone zero was still lying doubled over on his side i got to tell you something he said with a groan don't talk said stanley save your strength no listen zero insisted then he closed his eyes as his face twisted with pain i'm listening stanley whispered i took your shoes zero said stanley didn't know what he was talking about his shoes were on his feet that's all right he said just rest now it's all my fault said zero it's nobody's fault said stanley i didn't know zero said that's okay stanley said just rest zero closed his eyes but again he said i didn't know about the shoes what shoes from the shelter it took a moment for stanley to comprehend clyde livingston issues i'm sorry said zero stanley stared at him it was impossible zero was a delirious zero's confession seemed to bring him some relief the muscles in his face relaxed as he drifted into sleep stanley softly sang to him a song that had been in his family for generations if only if only the woodpecker sighs the bark on the tree was a little bit softer while the wolf waits below hungry and lonely he cries to the moon if only if only and that is the end of chapter 39 so a couple things happened here firstly they didn't die during the night the little bit of water they had did save them to an extent stanley wakes up with dirt in his mouth and that's because he drank mud um he did have water in that mud though so his body's not like completely given up and so he's somewhat sustained he had that onion so he's pretty pretty he's fine alive anyway um and so he gets more and zero like is alive also so he gets up a little bit onto his hands and knees and drinks some of the um drinks some of the mud at the bottom of the hole and to stanley he's like okay so this hole's dirty we don't want to drink mud for the rest of our lives or whatever uh we need a more sustainable way to do this maybe i need to go back down the mountain and get the shovel and he's like but that's really far i don't know how far that is i don't know if i'll be able to make it especially without any like water to start with uh real water clean water and so he's like i don't know how to deal with this so he gets up and he walks to the thumb and says tag you're it touching it and then he walks back and as zero crawls over to the hole to drink the water he drinks a little bit of it and then his stomach cramps again or whatever it's been doing and he shudders and he falls to the ground again in pain like he was before and in this feeling like he's dying and not feeling great and just being dehydrated and sick zero admits to stanley hey uh i'm the one that stole the shoes from clyde livingston um because he did uh he was at that homeless shelter where the shoes were supposed to be auctioned off he grabbed the shoes and then as he was getting away with them for some reason he tossed them over the bridge and they landed on stanley who got accused of committing the crime of stealing the shoes and so he gets sent to camp green lake and here he is with zero now uh he carried zero up the mountain much like madame zeroni wanted to be carried up the mountain he gave water from the spring at the top of the mountain so that the zeroni would grow big and strong and then he's saying the song that madam cerrone had said to sing to her and in effect it's possible by doing this he's lifted the curse on his family we don't know we don't know anything all we know is that hector zaroni is a descendant of madame zeroni and he has now been carried up a mountain given water and sung the song that was supposedly necessary to lift or to prevent the curse from ever happening with the with the yell nats family so we'll maybe nothing maybe something we will see on to chapter 40. when stanley found the onion the night before he didn't question how it had come to be there he ate it gratefully but now as he sat at the big thumb and the medal full of flowers he couldn't help but wander about it if there was one wild onion there could be more he intertwined his fingers and tried to rub out the pain then he bent down and dug up another flower this time pulling up the entire plant including the root onions fresh hot sweet onions sam called as mary lou pulled the cart down the street eight cents a dozen it was a beautiful spring morning the sky was painted blue pale blue and pink the same color as the lake and the peach trees along its shore mrs gladys tennyson was wearing just her nightgown and robe she came running down the street after sam mrs tennyson was normally a very proper woman who never went out in public without dressing up in fine clothes and a hat so it was quite surprising to the people of green lake to see her running past them siam she shouted oh whoa mary lou said sam stopping the mule in cart good morning mrs tennyson he said how's little becca doing gladys tennyson was all smiles i think she's gonna be all right the fever broke about an hour ago thanks to you i'm sure the good lord and doc hawthorne deserve the most of the credit the good lord yes agreed mrs tennyson but knocked dr hawthorne that quack wanted to put leeches on the stomach leeches my word they said they would suck out the bad blood now you tell me how a leech no good bad good blood from bad blood i wouldn't know said sam it was your onion tonic said miss tennyson that's what saved her the other town's people or other townspeople made their way to the cart good morning gladys said hattie parker don't you look lovely this morning several people snickered good morning hattie miss tennyson replied does your husband know you're parading about in your bed clothes hattie asked there were more snickers my husband knows exactly where i am and how i dress thank you said miss tennyson mrs tennyson we have both been up all night and half the morning with rebecca she almost died from stomach sickness it seemed she ate some bad meat hattie's face flushed her husband jim parker was the butcher it made my husband and me sick as well said miss tennyson but it nearly killed becca and what with her being so young sam saved her life it wasn't me said sam it was the onions i'm glad becky's out becca's all right had he said contrately i keep telling jim he needs to wash his knives said mr pike who owned the general store hedy parker excused herself then turned and quickly walked away uh tell becker that when she feels up to it to come by the store for a piece of candy said mr pike thank you i'll do that before returning home mrs tennyson bought a dozen onions from sam she gave him a dime and told him to keep the change i don't take charity sam told her but if you want to buy a few extra onions for mary lou i'm sure she'd appreciate it however at dan said miss tennyson give him give me my change in onions sam gave mrs tennyson an additional three onions and she fed one at a time to marry lou she laughed as the old donkey ate them out of her hand stanley and zero slept on and off and on for the next two days ate onions all they wanted and splashed dirty water into their mouths in the late afternoon big thumb gave them a shade stanley tried to make the hole deeper but really needed the shovel his efforts just seemed to stir up the mud and make the water dirtier zero was sleeping he was still very sick and weak but the sleep and the onions seemed to be doing him some good stanley was no longer afraid that he would die soon still he didn't want to go for the shovel while zero was asleep he didn't want him to wake up and think he'd been deserted he waited for zero to open his eyes i think i'll go look for the shovel stanley said i'll wait here zero said feebly as if he had any other choice stanley headed down the mountain the sleep and the onions had done him a lot of good as well he felt strong it was fairly easy to follow the trail he had made two days earlier there were a few places where he wasn't sure he was going the right way but it took just a bit of searching before he found the trail again he went quite a ways down the mountain but still didn't find the shovel he looked back up towards the top of the mountain he must have walked right past it he thought there's no way he could have carried zero all the way up from here staley headed downward just in case he came to a bare spot between two large patches of weeds and sat down to rest now he had finally gone too far he decided he's tired of out of walking down the hill it would have been impossible to have carried zero up the hill from here especially after walking all day with no food or water the shovel must be buried in some weeds before starting back up he took one last look around in all directions he saw a large indentation in the weeds a little further down the mountain it didn't seem likely that the shovel could be there but he'd already come this far there lying in some tall weeds he found the shovel in the sack of jars he was amazed he wondered if the shovel and sack must have rolled down the hill but none of the jars were broken except the one that he had broken earlier and if they had rolled down the hill it is doubtful that he would have found the sack and shovel side by side on his way back up the mountain stanley had to sit down and rest several times it was a long hard climb and that is the end of chapter 40. so this chapter takes us a little bit into the past as well but it starts out with um stanley finding another onion and eating it and from there it cuts back in time to sam and mary lou and the people of the town before he's murdered by the people of the town one of the ladies of the town miss gladys tennyson uh runs up to sam as he's selling onions and she's like hey you saved my daughter i'm so grateful that onion tonic you gave her broke the fever and stopped her from dying of food poisoning and sam's like i'm sure it was the doctor and the lord's prayer that saved her and she's like no the doctor wanted to use leeches maybe the lord helped but it was your tonic that helped break her fever and save her life and so she's excited she's in her nightgown essentially out on the street in the morning and uh what's her name uh hattie parker the person who actually reported sam for kissing kate uh that awful awful woman who is the wife of the butcher says what are you doing out here in your nightgown and uh she claps back miss tennyson claps back by saying oh you gave our entire family food poisoning or we had some bad meat and that gave our entire family food poisoning hedy parker of course being the butcher's wife knows that her husband's the only one supplying meat and so he must have given that family bad meat which means it's kind of had hatties it's not hattie's fault but hattie bears some responsibility and now she's been making fun of somebody for being in their underwear essentially it's not really underwear it's like a nightgown anyways for being out on the streets like this when it's actually her fault not her fault but her husband's fault uh for putting her in this position anyway and she's like i don't care how i'm dressed i'm just here to thank sam how can i repay you and he's like you just buy some onions and so she does and she pays him more and he's like i don't accept charity you can buy some onions for mary lou here though and so she gives some onions to mary lou and that's where it kind of cuts off i think kind of a cut back into the past showing kind of a i mean expanding more on the history there a little bit of course mr pike is a part of this as well he owns the general store and says hey when your daughter gets better all the way she can have a piece of candy from the general store uh he's also the one that called out hattie for saying hey i told your husband he needs to wash his butcher knives and of course hattie got embarrassed by that but anyways yeah we cut away from that um [Music] history of the town while they were you know happy being quietly racist before they outwardly just kill sam um but i think the point of that is to show that the onions had kind of a healing property to them at least his onions did and that i think we will see here as our characters are at the top of mountain drinking mud and eating onions i think we'll see they'll kind of get revived and healed uh by eating these onions and so anyways yes we cut to stanley and zero and they've been chilling up on that mountain top for a couple days and they've been eating onions and drinking mud water and they've been they're feeling a lot better although zero's still not great um so stanley says okay i'm gonna go look for that shovel and so he climbs to mount down the mountain and he keeps going he keeps going keeps going he's like this is way too far there's no way i went all this way up the hill carrying zero and so he stops to rest because he's tired even from going downhill he's tired because it's so far and then he's like wait a minute and he after he stands up about to head back up he's like wait a minute what's that down there and even further down the mountain he finds the shovel and the jars he's like i carried zero all that way that's like forever and him being like fairly athletic in this state having been working in the sun for like months now um when he says he's tired from climbing downhill that means it could be like miles we don't i mean we don't know anything but anyways it's been really far and so he's like there's no way i carried zero like that far up a mountain like up on incline but apparently he did and so he gets the shovel and he starts going back up and that is where the chapter ends so we will move on to chapter 41. zero's condition continued to improve stanley slowly peeled an onion he liked eating them one layer at a time the water hole was now almost as large as the holes he had dug back at camp green lake it contained almost two feet of murky water stanley had dug it all himself zero had offered to help but stanley thought it better for zero to save his strength it was a lot harder to dig in water than it was in a dry lake stanley was surprised that he himself hadn't gotten sick either from the sploosh or the dirty water or from living on onions he used to get quite sick a lot back home both boys were barefoot they had washed their socks all their clothes were very dirty but their socks definitely the worst they didn't dip their socks into the hole afraid to contaminate the water instead they filled the jars and poured the water over their dirty socks i didn't go to the homeless shelter very often zero said just if the weather was really bad i'd have to find or i'd have to find someone to pretend to be my mom if i'd just gone by myself they would have asked me a bunch of questions if they found out i didn't have a mom they would have made me a ward of the state what's a word of the state zero smiled i don't know but i didn't like the sound of it stanley remembered mr pendanski telling the warden that zero was a ward of the state he wondered if zero knew he'd become one he'd he'd become one i liked sleeping outside said zero i used to pretend i was a cub scout i always wanted to be a cub scout i'd see them at the park in their blue uniforms i was never a cub scout said stanley i wasn't good at social stuff like that kids made fun of me because i was fat i like the blue uniforms said zero maybe i wouldn't have liked being a cub scout stanley shrugged one shoulder my mother was once a girl scout said zero i thought you said you didn't have a mother everybody has to have a mother well yeah i know that she said she once won a prize for selling the most girl scout cookies said zero she was real proud of that stanley peeled off another layer of his onion we always took what we needed zero said when i was little i didn't even know it was stealing i don't remember when i found out but we just took what we needed never more so when i saw the shoes on display in the shelter i just reached in the glass and took them clyde livingston's shoes asked stanley i didn't know they were his i just thought they were somebody's old shoes it was better to take someone's old shoes i thought than steal a pair of new ones i didn't know they were famous there was a sign but of course i couldn't read it then the next thing i know everybody's making this big deal about how the shoes are missing it was kind of funny in a way the whole place going crazy there i was wearing the shoes and everybody running around saying what happened to the shoes the shoes are gone i just walked out the door no one noticed me when i got outside i ran around the corner and immediately took off the shoes i put them on top of a parked car i remember they smelled really bad yeah those were them said stanley did they fit you pretty much stanley remembered being surprised at clyde livingston's small shoe size stanley shoes were bigger than clyde stanley shoes were bigger clyde livingston had small quick feet stanley's feet were big and slow i should have just kept them said zero i'd already made it out of the shelter and everything i ended up getting arrested the next day when i tried to walk out of a shoe store with a new pair of sneakers if i just kept that old those old smelly sneakers neither of us would be here right now and that is the end of chapter 41. so essentially um zero's getting better and better every day he's actually doing pretty well now they're using jars of water and pouring it over their socks to kind of clean them a little bit because they don't want to like get their hold it contaminated now that uh stanley has the shovel he dug out the hole so that it's actually like substantially deep enough so that they actually have like two feet of water in there so they have quite a bit of water at this point which is nice um and then zero talks a little bit about uh about the shoes that he stole and how he didn't mean to do it and uh how he had to pretend people were his mom so that he wouldn't be committed as a ward of the state now uh i think if you're a ward of the state you have to be put into foster care or something like that and the foster care system in texas specifically is super super awful so many kids get sold into like child slavery and like sex slavery and terrible things like that so the current day like today this is a huge issue and texas is continually ignoring it and it gets worse and worse so none of that's really relevant to the book but it's good that he doesn't want to become a ward of the state because that is terrible the country does not take that state specifically in a lot of our country just doesn't take care of the children that don't have like mothers so anyways um zero talks about being a cub scout he never was he just always thought it would be cool stanley says he was never a cub scout uh he doesn't really like he wasn't good at socializing because people made fun of him because he was fat xero talks about his mother and says she was a girl scout she once got a award for selling the most girl scout cookies um blah blah blah blah blah and then he also talks about how his mother and him used to steal things when they were together but never more than they needed if they needed like a little bit of bread they would steal a little bit of bread and so when he was separated from his mother he saw the shoes glad livingston shoes on display and was like well they're old shoes it's better to steal old shoes than new shoes and he couldn't read the sign saying they were going to be auctioned because of course he couldn't read so he just took them and they were small shoes i said maybe a couple chapters ago they were big shoes they're not they're small shoes because sweet feet had small feet so zero's walking out with those shoes and everybody's freaking out and like where'd the shoes go where'd the shoes go and zero's just wearing them and he's like yeah i'm gonna leave so he puts them on top of a parked car and then just leaves them there and goes and steals a brand new pair of shoes later he didn't want to steal new shoes he wanted to steal oh he didn't want to steal at all he didn't understand the concept of stealing but he took the old shoes at first and then realized it was a problem and then went to steal new shoes instead and they got arrested and sent to camp green lake so the shoes that he put on top of a car when the car was driving over the overpass i guess they just blew off and landed on stanley because of his bad luck from that curse from his dirty rotten pig stealing great-great-grandfather so um [Music] yeah that's that's basically what happened in that chapter that's kind of everything uh he stole the shoes he ended up getting arrested because he stole a different pair of shoes and yeah that kind of brings us up to date on zero story and stanley's story and we're i mean i don't know how we can keep stuff and stuff into this book but here we go chapter 42. zero became strong enough to help dig the hole when he finished it was over six feet deep he filled the bottom with rocks to help separate the water from the dirt he was still the best hole digger around that's the last hole i'll ever dig he declared throwing down the shovel stanley smiled he wished it were true but he knew they had no choice but to eventually return to camp green lake they couldn't live on onions forever they had been completely around big thumb it was like a giant sundial they followed the shade they were able to see out in all directions there was no place to go the mountain was surrounded by desert zero stared at big thumb he must have a hole in it he said filled with water you think where else would the water be coming from the zero asked water doesn't run uphill stanley bit into an onion it didn't burn his eyes or nose and in fact he no longer noticed a particularly strong taste he remembered when he first carried zero up the hill how the air had smelled bitter there was a smell of thousands of onions growing and rotting and sprouting now he didn't smell a thing how many onions do you think we've eaten he asked zero shrugged i don't even know how long we've been here i'd say about a week said stanley and we probably each eat about 20 onions a day so that's 280 onions said zero stanley smiled i bet we really stink two nights later stanley lay awake staring up at the star-filled sky he was happy to fall asleep he knew he had no reason to be happy he had heard or read somewhere that the night before a person freezes to death what he heard that he had heard or read somewhere that right before a person freezes to death he suddenly feels nice and warm he wondered if perhaps he was experiencing something like that it occurred to him that he couldn't remember the last time he felt happiness it wasn't just being sent to camp green lake that had made his life miserable before that he'd been unhappy at school where he had no friends and bullies like derek dunn had picked on him no one liked him and the truth was he didn't especially like himself he liked himself now he wondered if he was delirious he looked over at zero's sleeping near him zero's face was lit in the starlight and there was a flower petal in front of his nose that moved back and forth as he breathed it reminded stanley of something out of a cartoon zero breathed in and the pedal was drawn almost touching his nose zero breathed out and the pedal moved towards his chin it stayed on zero's face for an amazingly long time before fluttering off to the side stanley continued placing it back in front of zero's nose but it wouldn't be the same oh he considered placing it back on in front of zero's nose it seemed like zero had lived at camp green lake forever but as stan lee thought about it now he realized that zero must have gotten there no more than a month or two before him zero was actually arrested a day later but stanley's trial kept getting delayed because of baseball he remembered what zero had said a few days before if cyril had just kept those shoes then neither of them would be here right now as stanley stared at the glittering night sky he thought there was no place he would rather be he was glad zero put his shoes on the parked car he was glad they fell from the overpass and hit him on the head when the shoes fell first fell from the sky he remembered thinking that destiny had struck him now he thought so again it was more it was more than a coincidence it had to be destiny maybe they wouldn't have to return to camp green lake he thought maybe they could make it past the camp then follow the dirt road back to civilization they could fill the sack with onions and three jars with water and he had his canteen as well they could refill their jars and canteen at the camp maybe sneak into the kitchen and get some food he doubted any counselors were still on guard everyone had to think they were dead buzzard food it would mean living the rest of his life as a fugitive the police would always be after him at least he could call his parents and tell them he was alive but he couldn't go visit them in case the police were watching the apartment although if everyone thought he was dead they wouldn't bother to watch the apartment he would have to somehow get a new identity now i'm really thinking crazy he thought he wondered if a crazy person wonders if he's crazy but even as he thought this an even crazier idea kept popping into his head he knew it was too crazy to even consider still if he was going to be a fugitive for the rest of his life it would help to have some money perhaps a treasure chest full of money you're crazy he told himself besides just because he found a lipstick container with kb on it that didn't mean there was treasure buried there it was crazy it was all part of this crazy feeling of happiness or maybe it was destiny he reached over and shook zero's arm hey zero he whispered huh zero muttered zero wake up what zero raised up his head what is it you want to take one more hole stanley asked him and that is the end of chapter 42. chapter 42 is more about stanley's realizations than anything else um zero it starts out with them basically back to normal basically fine now they've dug the hole even larger there's now plenty of water um zero's like that's the last hole i'll ever dig they're eating onions um but stanley realizes they probably couldn't live on onions forever either way they've explored the entire top of the the mountain there zero's like maybe that big thumb thing has water in it and that's that's where all the water is coming from and stanley's like oh water doesn't go uphill which isn't necessarily true water does go uphill that's why water flows down from mountains um it's about pressure kind of forcing it up and then it comes out where it can so it doesn't really matter if it's a mountain or if it's like flat surface on the regular sea level water gets pushed up all the same and if it's kind of like where two tectonic plates have collided or where one's overlapping another one then the water will just come out wherever it doesn't matter if it's a mountain or not water will just come out of it so uh that could be the case here where it's just a regular old spring on top of a mountain it's not that unusual but i guess i i don't expect these random kids to know much about how springs natural springs work so anyways um so stanley's laying they they they calculate that they've had about 280 onions which is plenty of onions and stanley's like oh man i bet we stink from all the onions we ate and later when it's night time a couple days later stanley's looking at the stars and he's like you know what this is the happiest they've ever been in my life because you know he wasn't popular at school he never had any friends and now he's kind of just like vibing with his friend under the stars he's like having a good time he's like his needs are taken care of he has food he has water and they're just kind of like relaxing and doing whatever they want after a long period of suffering for several months it's just for him this is like the best it can be and he's kind of happy i think that zero had thrown those shoes over the overpass effect he didn't really he just put them on top of a car he's kind of happy that zero stole his shoes because i mean it led to his own happiness and he's like you know what that wasn't a bad thing it led to everything that's happened so far and i'm happy with where i am right now i'm in the best shape of my life i have a friend i'm hanging out in the under the stars it's a good time anyways um he's like okay so we can't stay on top of the mountain forever maybe we'll have to go down and i'm sure everyone at the camp thinks we're dead so we can maybe go to the camp get some water uh steal some food um we'll probably need money if we're gonna be outlaws from here but maybe if they think we're dead we're not gonna need money or no maybe if they think we're dead we're not gonna like worry about being outlaws because we'll be like dead and so it doesn't matter if we have other identities or not because there nobody's gonna be looking for us and then he's like all right so if we do need money how do i get money you know i did find that kb lipstick tube the kate barlow lipstick tube from kissing kate barlow maybe that's where she buried her treasure actually and maybe i should go digging there and see if there's treasure maybe it's worth getting the jars full of water and gathering onions in a sack and filling up my canteen and then just trekking across the desert just to see if there is treasure there because you know we can get our life turned around here uh i think that'd be pretty cool and so from here um he he talks to zero he's like hey how do you feel about digging one more hole implying that he's considering going back and stealing food and water and potentially digging another hole to look for the treasure that was supposedly buried by kate barlow we don't we don't know anyways i think yeah we'll call it there um thank you for joining me uh this has been an eventful couple of chapters here uh any questions drop them down below comments down below it's always nice to see comments and i will see you in the next set of chapters thank you guys goodbye
