how did Southern Baptists end up in the city of New Orleans the history of our seminary is tied closely with the history of Baptists in New Orleans the first Baptists entered New Orleans in 1818 and 25 years later on December 28 1843 Russell Holman organized first baptist baptist growth was slow in those early years but by 1917 there were five additional baptist congregations in New Orleans with about 1300 members the first mention of establishing the school in New Orleans to Train Christian workers came in 1817 thirty some-odd years later in 18-49 a decade before Southern Seminary was organized one of its founders basil Manley senior dreamed of a great Baptist College for the Southwest to be located in New Orleans but it wasn't until 1915 that a committee was formed to explore the establishment of a Baptist missionary training school in the city two years later messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention instructed the home mission board now the North American Mission Board and the Sunday School Board now life way to work with Louisiana and Mississippi Baptists to establish a training school in New Orleans the Baptist Bible Institute was born on October 1st 1918 byron DeMint was installed as the first president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary he was followed by William Hamilton Duke McCall Rowland level Henry Adelman Grady coffin and Landrum level our current president dr. Chuck Kelly became president in 1996 and is the second longest-serving president of the seminary so far Newcombe College had recently relocated to another place within New Orleans and their former site became our new campus services were held in manag and Chapel students went throughout the city sharing the gospel in 1946 Baptist Bible Institute was renamed New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary because we continued to grow we were relocated to the Gentilly area in 1953 technology came to New Orleans Baptist Seminary as did a radio station technology continues to be a part of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary online courses and hybrid courses are just part of the mix of a variety of formats by which students can study at the seminary New Orleans Baptist Seminary is committed to making theological training accessible to all God called men and women we have extension centers throughout the southeast so that students can conveniently come to class at a location near where they are already serving this lets congregations keep their valued ministers and let students be able to sharpen their tools while being in ministry we have innovative Prison training programs at Angola Penitentiary and in parchment penitentiary as well as the Louisiana Correctional Institute for women our faculty has been instrumental in forming a variety of Institute's to engage the culture with scholarship and research one of our greatest challenges came in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina blew across our Shore most of the campus was flooded devastation was widespread but Southern Baptists came from all over to help us recover our homes and our lives I know this personally because this is my home Southern Baptist came from all over to help us rebuild our campus and their work has borne fruit our campus is once again a beautiful place in which to study for you see in New Orleans miracles can happen equipping leaders for the 21st century makes New Orleans the logical seminary for education
