The 18th century pouf of course! Those really big beehive looking hairstyles of the rich ladies ;)

I did that with four hair donuts (the ones for making buns) stacked on top of eachother once, that was fun, but I'm sure you could make it look way more elegant than I ever could

I would love to see a froofy 1830s topknot!

Have you considered doing historical styles from other regions as well?

Are there particular research images this style is coming from? I’ve never seen any 1860s hairstyles with such forward front sections. It seems to me that the front section should be pinned back toward the ear and away from the face if historical accuracy is the goal.

hello my name is Liv and I'm a professional makeup and hair artist with over eleven years experience working within the industry I am excited to introduce you to a new historically inspired makeup of hair series today we are starting with an evening look inspired by different styles from the 1860's our model is the lovely Kate Fenwick who you might recognize from our dickensian Christmas video I will be using modern beauty products and techniques that you can try home as well as sharing some surprising facts about Victorian Beauty practices so let's get started Kate's hair into a center parting I'm just smoothing down this front section don't have to do this just because Kate's hair doesn't really want to be in this parting so I'm just waiting it this is definitely where he wants to be so to start with this hairstyle I am going to take the front bits into sections again but for this particular style in this period as well history the front sections were actually quite big and they took them quite far back to the crown so I'm just going to section that off [Music] and do the same on the other side sectioning to the back of the ear so you can sort of see you've got a little bit of hair about an inch or so more behind the ear so that's how much hair you need to sort of leave it's quite a lot actually for the front section and then with this last bit of hair at the back for now I'm just going to twist that out of the way I'm not going to worry about that for now so we're just going to curl the front section of hair and just let it set it's going to use a bit of heat protection spray I'll just go through with my comb and then with this front section I am then going to put it into smaller sections that I can work with to curl the hair just get that top out of the way [Music] so I'm going to use my conical wand and for this look I'm going to hold it down in the curl is going to come towards the face into place so I'm just keeping it in that direction so the curls coming towards the face and just pinning it there away from the scalp so again you've got that lift [Music] just be careful not to burn yourself I [Music] just very gently curl that background [Music] I'm just gonna put a little bit of hairspray on each one just to encourage it that's the direction it wants to go in if you don't have any of these um grips you can just use any old pin bobby pins whatever just make sure they're secure okay first section done and I just repeat on the other side [Music] I doubt the way you've got three three sections going down there [Music] getting some nice root lift going on there so bringing the hair away from the face all away from the head rather so you get a fairly wide hairstyle at the front lovely okay that's the front section set so that can just be left now to cool and we can do the makeup nothing right so I'm just gonna start by putting on some moisturizer on to Kate's skin and this'll just give her a nice healthy Juhi base there wasn't much makeup in the Victorian era Queen Victoria declared makeup vulgar so it wasn't fashionable at all really but the Victorians made up for that in many different ways some of the lotions and potions they used to put on the face we're absolutely they were deadly and a lot of them were for skin lightening so they'd have pretty awful things in them you know hydrogen peroxide and ammonia and mercury things like that and they wanted to get rid of any pigmentation take away your freckles but yeah they wanted to look very very pale and almost sickly look really was known as the consumptive look because of the prevalence of tuberculosis in a particular time you know it was it was seen as beautiful to look like here almost unwell you know the women would put eyedrops in you know like belladonna they used to make the eyes go watery and to brighten their eyes as well or and they would squirt perfume into their eyes or citrus juice to make the eyes look watery you got a nice healthy dewy base there so because we're going for a fairly pale look I'm just going to put a bit of light foundation on [Music] I'm just going to works in really thin layers really Buffalo I don't want to get rid of Kate's lovely freckles because I think they're gorgeous this is just to make her bit paler and you can use any foundation you want so anything you're comfortable with cream liquid powder it's just to get this particular look and of course you - it is - all just stick with your own lovely skin tone whatever it may be okay just going to go over that with a bigger brush just to make it look more natural really he's just sort of buff it in so it doesn't really look like you're wearing much okay right just going to set back with a little bit of powder I'm just gonna go down the center face with this just to take away showing where you don't want it so really just the center of the face okay so Rouge was not really worn by you know many ladies unless they were actresses or hmm women of ill repute shall we say but we are going to put on a little bit of Rouge just so you've got that fresh look in your face I'm just gonna pop this on I'm using a cream just to get a fairly natural look I'm just going to pop that on the apples of the cheek so just smile for me so where you see just that sort of central bit of the apples of the cheeks I'm just gonna use a foundation brush and just a very very light application with most of the color most of the pigment being in the apples of the cheek and just sort of blending up [Music] okay that's nice chill blush and I'm just going to get that stippling brush I used again and just go over just there's no harsh lines it's all seamless it's all working together okay I'm just going to put on a little bit of balm onto your lips and I'm going to mix it with what's left of the cream blusher just on the back of my hand just gonna brush that on lip tints were often made with vermilion unknown poison white LED paints were sometimes used on the body called enameling women had to keep fairly expressionless or the enamel would crack on their faces this was particularly popular around the end of the Victorian era around 1880s okay I'm just gonna brush through the brows again just make sure the hairs go in the right direction in the way that I want nothing was really done with the eyebrows he's genteel ladies you really do much apart from put on their favorite lotions and potions and hmm pinch their cheeks often to get color and bite their lips as well in order to get color in their lips and that's really what most women used to do in order to get color to the face was just pinch their cheeks and bite the lips yeah [Music] okay so that's the makeup then and I'm just going to give it a bit of hairspray make sure all of the hair is going where I want it to give it quite sleek look there was no real height to these particular hairstyles at this period it was really all if anything was going on it was to the side of the face and it wasn't really up here that was later on in the Victorian era when hair got a lot of height okay so I'm going to section this hair into three but in a fit in a kind of a triangle shape so you've got just taking these sections down this and you've got a kind of triangle shape going on there so three sections at the back just move those out of the way just working with the middle one first then take a fairly thin hairband I'm gonna take two hairpins just put one through one side and then on that side so you've got kind of a bungee grip there and then I'm gonna take that fairly low down put one pin in there and then wrap the band around as many times as possible so you've got a nice secure ponytail and then just pop that pin back in there so that's one section and then I'm going to do the same with this side just keep it nice and flat so it's sleek just holding that hair quite tight to the scalp I'm just grabbing it [Music] do the same on the side we really are a number of ways you can do this you can just do a sort of standard bun at the back if you find that easier than doing this that's absolutely no problem to get the same effect you can even weave in ribbons this is something a little bit fun bit different so with each section now I'm just gonna spray it just make sure each section is nice and smooth and neat so I'm just going to [Music] take the head just kind of roll it towards the scalp like so when you compete then I'm gonna do that on the other sides so yeah we spray each section of hair first before rolling it just helps to keep it on your fingers when you're rolling it towards the head [Music] as putting in human pins just as the finishing touch just to make sure they're nice and secure well then you should have three rolls like so if you can't get them perfect it doesn't matter again like I said you can just put a fairly low bun in certainly makes it an awful lot easier so the only other thing to do is to let these curls out [Music] Jinxy because they're naturally now sort of falling towards the face you've got that lovely root lift that's giving a bit more width to the face in quite often Victorian ladies they would do their hair the hairstyles were kind of depend on what they were wearing so in the 1850s when the skirts widened and you got you know more hoops and things and particularly in the 1860s you got quinolones women would wear wider hairstyles they became very fashionable so they would take their whole silhouette into consideration it balance themselves out in effect just going to very gently brush slightly [Music] and I just brush ever so gently through the curls so yeah just be very careful when you're working with them you just because you don't want to destroy all of that hard work [Music] lovely [Music] [Applause] [Music] you you
