hi I'm Claire forest on the occupational psychologist at Jack your land rover this is just a short video to tell you about some hints and tips when you're applying for a job so the first thing to do when you're applying for a job is to do some initial research into the organization you're applying for so it's really important to find out exactly what the culture is going to be like and what the jobs going to entail at any organization it's really important that you don't waste your time and the company's time applying for jobs that you probably don't want the next stage of any application will be to fill out an application form and to do your CV so it's important to remember that when you're doing this you've only got a limited amount of space to give information about yourself so it's really important that you only include information that's relevant to the job you're applying for so again it's really important you find out exactly what the employer is looking for most people publish a list of the expected qualifications and relevant experience they'd like you to have and if you have any of that make sure that you really highlight that within your CV and your application form so a big part of any application to an organization is something like an Assessment Center and this will include a number of exercises it'll almost certainly include an interview and may also include things like a group exercise a role play the presentation and some ability tests I'm going to give you short overviews each of these exercises what to expect what your assess is looking for and some hints and tips as part of that so the interview what to expect your interviews will be asking you a number of questions based on the technical and behavioral requirements of the job you've applied for interviews can take a number of formats it will usually be a one-to-one interview or could be done by paneled up to three interviewers at Jaguar Land Rover we take a very structured approach to our interviews and this means you'll be asked a set of predetermined questions and we use this format to ensure that we apply the most rigorous and fair process to all of our candidates so you'll be asked a number of questions to assess your experience skills and abilities and it's really important that when you and complete your interview you give specific answers drawing on the relevance experience the company you're looking for so what we're looking for your interviews we'll be asking specific questions to draw evidence about the types of skills and experience relevant to the job it's really important that you pick specific examples and provide some information about the context what you did and also what you learnt and the results of that outcome so make sure that you really understand the assessment criteria before you give your answer so in terms of interview hints and tips it can be quite difficult to assess the candidates capability if they give very vague answers very high-level or also if they're very long-winded answers as well so it's really important to consider the structure of the answers you're giving I'd suggest you use something like the car approach to giving an interview answer car stands for context action and result so within context you should try and summarize within no more than two sentences what the situation is you're describing and what the desired outcome was the next section should be the action now this is the key point that you can pick up and scores and points within your interview so you should try and have the most content within that within this you should describe specific actions that you carried out and you should try to avoid using words like we or it and try and use words like I so that we know exactly what you did as part of that project it's also really interesting to understand why you did that the final part is the results so here hopefully you've used an example where there was a positive outcome and you should try and describe that to your interviewer if the outcome wasn't positive you should try and describe what you learned from the experience and what you do if you had a chance to do it again so know that exercise you might be asked to do is a group exercise so you want to know what to expect within this type of exercise you'll be asked to work as part the small team on a joint assignment your team will be given some information and a desired outcome which you'll have to work towards you can expect to be assessed on your interpersonal skills how you use information and how well you interact with others in the team to achieve your outcome in terms of hints and tips you should try and understand all of the information you've been given but the real key thing we're looking for here is your interpersonal skills so make sure you're aware of others in the team and the information they're providing don't try and push your own agenda at the expense of other people in the team also try not to focus too much on taking a specific role as part of the group for example a note taker because your Assessors will be looking for well-rounded individuals as part of this exercise you may also be asked to take part in a roleplay as part of an assessment center what you can expect here is a one-to-one situation in which you're asked to take on the role of a specific person within an organization you'll be given some information prior to going into the meeting and it be clear what the outcome should be of that meeting what your Assessors are looking for here is someone that is clearly understood debrief and somebody that understands what a successful outcome might may look like there could be more than one successful outcome so bear that in mind in terms of hints and tips you should make sure that you've read all the information thoroughly before going in ensure that you have some structure to the meeting and that drives a successful outcome and make sure that you're prepared to back up or support any decisions or recommendations that you do make within that meeting it's likely that your role player will try and ask some challenging questions as part of the meeting you may also be asked to complete some ability tests as part of your assessment center these are structured systematic ways of assessing your performance on particular tasks that are relevant to the job common types of tests include verbal reasoning tests numerical reasoning tests and abstract reasoning tests before actually completing the tests I suggest you do some practice questions most test publishers will have some practice questions on their websites or there are a number of books related to this topic when you're completing the test remember to work as quickly and accurately you can try not to get too stuck on any one question if you're really unsure of the answer give your best guess and move on finally in general I would say that you need to really do your research on a company you're applying for have a look on their website look at recent news articles and if possible try and talk to somebody that already works at the organization also get as much information as you can on the assessment criteria as well as the technical requirements most companies will have something like a behavioral framework which will underpin the assessment process you can usually find these on company's websites and finally good look for more hints and tips there is a document on our website Jaguar Land Rover careers calm
