hello everyone and welcome to the big game of the penultimate round uh it is round 13 of the F candidates tournament 2024 and we have gukesh versus alza fuja now gukesh going into this matchup is down a point against alza in their head-to-head score and alz also defeated him in the first half of the candidates tournament so he would very much enjoy bouncing back here with a win with white and also it would go a very long way uh you know uh towards his goal of actually winning the candidates tournament and challenging ding Len for the title of world champion now alza no longer has a chance of doing that but he still of course wants to do very well so let's check it out we even have a nice photo of this matchup let's check it out uh there it is GES versus ala a couple of moves on the board and um uh yeah it's it's a very very fine position as you'll see very very very soon so gkes with white opens with Pawn to E4 we have E5 by Ala Knight F3 Knight to C6 and Bishop to B5 he goes for the ru Lopez Knight to F6 the Berlin defense and now Pawn to D3 we have Bishop to C5 uh castles uh C3 is much more common here stopping ideas like Knight to D4 but gukesh just castles here he says all right I know you want to uh play so let's play and ala does go for Knight to D4 sort of breaking opening principles here as you are moving the same piece twice but you are forcing white to do so as well so Knight captures on D4 Bishop cap and now Knight to D2 We have Pawn to C6 challenging the bishop Bishop to C4 and now uh here comes the first real thing for ala and that is Pawn to D6 as you can see gues spent zero time getting this position an hour and 59 minutes whereas ala is now down to an hour and 40 uh 9 Minutes uh and as usual the clocks are not working for some reason so let me just update this yeah another working okay uh glad I caught it so so early so this we have Pawn to C3 challenging the bishop and the bishop goes back to B6 we have Bishop to B3 now the bishop can be shifted over to C2 if needed to control this diagonal and now there is a game that reached this position where castles was played but here we have Pawn to A5 and it is now as of move 10 that we have a completely new game Castle was actually played by Eric Hansen in his game against maximilan beon brighter uh where I believe uh he won that game or maybe he didn't I will check I don't want to trick you guys no he lost that game yeah he lost that game I was played two years ago in the European Club cup H but yeah uh here A5 a completely new move so let's see how ala will play this we have Knight to C4 and Bishop back to A7 of course you are not giving up the bishop the question is merely whether you bring it to C7 to control this diagonal or do you for the moment keep keep it on this diagonal with a potential Bishop to B8 at some point so okay Bishop to A7 and now Knight to E E3 uh with with some ideas of maybe Knight to F5 in the future we have castles and now Queen to F3 Knight to F5 right away isn't as interesting because of course ala will just take it and enjoy a very strong Center and if anything this Pawn will just be in the way of the light Square Bishop doing some damage to the to the black king side like even if we try some sort of an attack with G4 let's say D5 G4 captures captures looks very nice for white but after Queen to D6 there really isn't all that much here so yeah like like we said the pawn is just in the way of this bishop so instead after castles we have Queen to F3 uh Bishop to G4 not possible due to the very nice Knight on E3 and now Pawn to D5 of course ala very happy with his position he gets the full center Bishop to C2 and now Pawn to G6 ala says all right this bishop could become very strong let's play G6 before it's too late and also we control uh df5 square with this so Rook to E1 uh and Bishop to E6 we have e captures on D5 C captures and now Pawn to H3 controlling G4 so you can now move the knight uh and Rook to E8 by Ala also interesting would be something like Knight to H5 going after the F4 Square so then let's say Knight G4 uh and now Pawn to F6 that requires to uh to weaken your king a little bit but it is very nice if if Bishop to H6 Knight to G7 and Black's position is perfectly fine uh but Rook to E8 is what ala goes for and now Bishop to A4 GES tries to exploit this newly created weakness Pawn to E4 attacks the White Queen captures captures and now Queen back to E2 we have Rook to E7 getting the Rook out of Harm's Way and Knight back to F1 uh with with a a later potential maybe of going Knight to G3 to put pressure on the pawn but also just nicely guarding that H2 Square you don't want to see something like Bishop to B8 Queen D6 and you getting checkmated or having to weaken your position further so Queen to C7 and now Bishop back to B3 countering black strong uh light score Bishop here and ala forces the trade A4 we have Bishop captures Rook captures Bishop to E3 now and just Pawn to A3 ala wants to weaken the C3 pawn and uh basically Crush gha's Queen side we have Pawn to C4 now the pawn is nicely defended and the question is do you want to play a capture and B2 and just trade everything and well it is possible it's not maybe the the best idea because if if you do this let's say captures captures Queen captures and C4 Queen captures and B7 uh not a lot to to play for anymore yes white does have the pass Pawn here but it's not uh I mean with two Rooks on the board it's not really something like Queen to C6 can be played white will avoid the queen trade Bishops will come off the board captures captures and let's say Knight D5 even the knights come off the board it's not a lot again yes the past a pawn is here but the two Rooks are are you know perfectly fine to to hold off the pawn so after C4 well it is possible ala wants more he plays Knight to H5 and now has eyes that F4 Square where if the bishop captures then his dark Square Bishop comes alive and becomes very very strong we have Pawn to G3 uh weakening the position a little bit but gaining more control over df4 square and now Bishop to C5 Bishop to C5 incredibly strong ballot is he of course knows that B4 uh will be playing at some point and he doesn't want to overextend with something like Pawn to F5 even though it's it's a perfectly fine move like Bishop captures captures and then Pawn to B4 uh it is playable but yeah he he uh refuses to play it right away he first stops Pawn to B4 with Bishop to C5 and only now after Bishop to B3 gkes forced into this concession advances his Pawn to F5 we have Bishop captures and C5 Queen captures the bishops come off the board and now Rook a to D1 and here the question is how to continue this ala goes for Rook to f8 which is preparing Pawn to F4 uh probably he avoided Pawn to F4 right away due to Queen to G4 but it it can still be played it's just not not very clear how for example Rook to F6 and after Rook to E2 which is necessary as the f file will open up everything will come to that f file H yeah something like f captures Knight captures Knight captures Queen captures and Rook eight f8 looks incredibly strong here but uh again the the queen uh rook and king do a very nice job of uh defending the F2 pawn and now it's equal position I mean it's a very very live position very attacking one but still equal so instead ala just goes Rook to f8 he waits does not um uh you know ease the tension right away and now Rook to D5 attacks the black queen queen back to E7 and now Pawn to F4 stopping alza from advancing the pawn to F4 and ask are you maybe interesting in a nice e captur an F3 alasan which would be silly as The Rook would just hang so Knight back to F6 and now Rook back to D2 H we have Pawn to G5 here uh there are many moves you could consider like King to F7 just improving the position Pawn to H5 is nice but also this E3 move should definitely be discussed uh because the only real attempt is to capture the the pawn with the Knight or or you okay you could prepare with Rook to D3 will result in and pretty much um the exact same position after Knight captures on E3 uh Rook to E8 tripling up going after the Knight here and once the Knight is defended now you you can pin the Knight Queen to C5 and after let's say queen to F2 unpinning now Knight to E4 attack the queen attack the G3 pawn and it's a very ugly position let's say queen to G2 white is up a pawn but black has you know a really really awesome position so uh black is probably better here although it would be very hard to prove so but as you can see both of them are very low on time so uh G5 right away by Ala we have Knight to E3 going after the F5 pawn and now G captures an F4 inviting Knight captures an F5 uh but if Knight captures an F5 you would just be very sorry because there's Queen to C5 with check nicely connecting with the Knight and you you resign here so after G captures on F4 G captures on F4 was played and now Queen to F7 uh preparing Queen to H5 to to trade off the Queens King to H2 preparing Rook to G1 and now Knight to H5 here Queen to H5 would be very much premature because after this Rook to G1 check and King to h8 there's Rook to G5 and now you're just in a bad situation the queen and the pawn are attacked and if you trade Queens Rook captures and let's say Knight to D7 to defend your Pawn uh B4 is coming and now your Pawn Knight is again cut off from the two important Central squares and if let's say you go Rook e to F6 to defend the pawn because you really should uh now your Rooks are just silly here stock guarding the F5 pawn and the uh White pawns are now uh advancing further so that would be a problem so instead Knight to H5 uh this is best by Ala we have Queen to F2 now trying to infiltrate with the White Queen and Rook to G6 uh we have Rook to D5 putting more pressure to that D5 pawn and now Knight to G7 REM maneuvering the the Knight over to E6 we have Rook e to D1 doubling up on the D file and Rook to H6 now this is move 38 and ala finds the only move that keeps him in the game as the the idea was Rook to D7 but now if Rook to D7 Queen to H5 is very strong for alza so gues tries Rook to G1 here uh now Queen to H5 isn't all that impressive because you can simply block with Rook to G3 so Rook to G6 now uh challenging the rook and Rook G to D1 uh gkes keeps the tension reaches move 40 reaches uh time control and alza has to make one more move he has 45 seconds on the clock and he needs to make one more move to reach time control and he just repeats Rook to H6 and he reaches time control now the question is will uh gesh repeat yes Rook to G1 and Alesa now uh plays Rook back to G6 attacks the rook and now we have Queen to H4 no longer repeating uh gukesh wants to play this on H we have rook captur and G1 King captures and now King to h8 Preparing Rook to G8 to uh grab hold of the open G file as you will not be taking over the D file the D file is under gha's control uh we have King to F2 getting off of the G file and now Rook to G8 we have Queen to G5 Queen to H6 also with um very nice idea of Rook D6 and Rook to F6 but he plays Queen to G5 which looks like something you shouldn't play as you are uh you know in in line of fire here but he manages to trick alza and here alza makes the first mistake of the game uh now the way you should play this is Knight to E6 you give up the pawn and once Queen captures an F5 is played then comes Queen to G7 and now if you don't want to run into some sort of a checkmating attack you have to trade queens and after let's say queen captures Pawn captures Rook to f8 with check King to E1 or if you go here then Knight F4 check will pick up the Rook so you have to play King to E1 and now Rook f three you're down a pawn but you have sufficient activity to uh to you know for Force matters like King to D2 play Rook F2 check King back to C3 you again pin the Knight King D2 Rook F2 check and so on and so on you're either going to win some pawns uh or uh you're just going to get a nice repetition here but he played Queen to G6 and now this is a problem there is a very nice uh move here for for GES that allows him to gain a winning Advantage uh so feel free to pause the video here and try to find a move that uh wins the game for GES and gets him into the lead of the FED candidates tournament one round before the end uh while I give you a couple of seconds so uh for those of you who were able to do it congratulations on finding This brilliant maneuver and for those of you who just want to enjoy the show it is Queen captures on G6 now before I uh finish this move you're probably wondering how would ala miss this obviously the Queens are literally touching one another well the problem is uh he didn't miss this move he missed the the next move the the the following one at H captures and now of course the move that you all saw when you decided to play Queen captur and G6 is Rook to D6 now uh probably what ala saw here and I'm only guessing here is that okay you could you could put some pressure here you could play Rook to D7 go after the B7 Pawn but this isn't really an issue because Knight E6 goes after the F4 pawn and uh well now now you don't really have all that much if King to F if King to G3 you even run into a losing position so you have to play something like Knight to D5 to defend the the4 pawn but then Knight to C5 attacks the rook and defends um uh the the B7 Pawn if Rook to C7 goes after the Knight again Knight to D3 check attacks the king and now your knight is sufficiently active you can even go after the A2 pawn and you're not going to be losing this another move you might consider is instead of Rook d 7 Rook to B5 to go after this Pawn but again it's pretty much the same Knight to E6 goes after F4 and then after Knight D5 defending the F4 Pawn you will play Rook G7 and the pawn is defended so those are the two options and probably the two options that alza saw but after Rook to D6 the problem is you don't allow Knight to E6 the move that you had in all of the other lines that gives you counterplay as the F4 Pawn is attacked and it comes with tempo as the G6 Pawn is hanging and the biggest problem is that you don't have King to H7 if you play this then Rook to B6 the only way to defend the B7 Pawn now is to play Rook to B8 but now your Rook is just ridiculous there Knight to D5 and for example if Knight to d8 you will play C5 and there's no move for black you can't move the Rook because you lose the pawn you can't move the Knight because you really have no squares available for that Knight other than the one where where the Knight came from and after you play anything else then C6 just wins the game that's it of course The Rook is undefended it's game over so uh that's uh the the the problem here but after Rook to D6 Rook to E8 was played by Ala uh and uh now it's not so clear what to do of course you will grab the pawn but does ala have some counter playay here okay Rook captures on G6 and now comes Knight to E6 going after the df4 pawn and while you could trade with Knight captures Knight captures Knight to D5 is much better just keep keep the tension and now Force ala to find some way out of this he plays Knight to D4 uh and okay we have Rook to B6 now we want to grab the B7 Pawn as well and now Knight to C2 by is here sort of the the last way to play this was Pawn to E3 check uh but it's not easy Knight captures an E3 and then you go with Rook to E4 idea being that okay the king cannot defend because the Knight would hang so you play Knight D5 to defend the pawn but now Rook E2 check and after King G3 just Rook captures an A2 and okay you still have some some play here but uh objectively it will be lost the problem is after Rook to A7 and let's say Rook captures some B3 with check King to H4 uh Rook to B5 goes after the Knight and now let's say Knight to F6 or you don't play this but uh there's no way to to push the pawn to A2 that's the problem and if you try something like this to kick away the Knight to maybe somehow uh grab hold of that uh a82 Square then just Knight F6 and you you cannot avoid checkmate that's that's uh game over so after Rook to B6 Alisa tried Knight to C2 but now Rook captures on B7 we have Rook to E6 and Rook to E7 of course uh the only way to play is to advance this Pawn to E3 with check if the knight ever moves but of course GES will not allow that to happen Rook e seven and now ala cannot trade as he will just lose the C Pawn is much too too quick so Rook to H6 goes after the H3 pawn and C5 gukesh gives it up uh just starts advancing the pawn and of course you cannot capture so Knight to D4 uh we have King to G2 now defending the pawn and Rook to G6 with check King F2 Rook H6 and now he gives it up Pawn to B4 finally it lands on move 56 we have Rook captures on H3 King to G2 and now Rook back to H6 you have to play this otherwise the Knight comes to F6 and then you're just getting checkmated uh if the Rook ever leaves the H file so here Rook to H6 stopping Knight to F6 and now Rook to to B7 the pawns are now marching forward King to G8 getting the king to a little bit of a safer square but now Pawn to B5 we have King to f8 and while you could Advance both of the pawns to Victory you kind of don't want to allow this sacrifice of the Knight for the two pawns uh it's still winning because after Knight to E3 there's just no good move for black you cover C2 check and without that black really doesn't have anything uh but still B6 is definitely the way to go uh here GES is saying I will play C7 uh b a rook to C7 and then Advance my pawn pawn to B7 Pawn to B8 I will bring a rook or a queen into the game and that will be Checkmate so what can ala do here he has a minute on the clock uh is there a miracle save here well yes there is he finds it but only if GES Falls for it Rook to G6 with check King to F2 and now Rook to H6 of course Rook to C7 preparing B7 B8 Checkmate uh Rook to H2 with check and now we have King to G3 and he was in this position on move 63 that ala fuia resigned the game as there is nothing more to be done here uh the only uh move that uh was here to save ala is had GES played King to E3 and then Knight to C2 would be Checkmate as The Rook covers this the pawns cover that and the Knight covers D4 and this would be I mean if this happened this would be absolutely crushing for GES I don't think you recover from this you know in in entire life is not enough to recover from from such a blow H but he doesn't he was ready for it he saw it like 10 moves ago probably he played King to G3 and here alz a resign because uh how do you stop uh B7 B8 you have to play something like Rook B2 but not after B7 Knight to B6 will just block the rook and that's it you have a couple of checks like Knight E2 check let's say King H4 Knight to G1 now uh but just Knight to B6 and after Rook to H2 check King G3 there are no more moves B8 will be will be Checkmate uh so yeah incredible stuff by gukesh just winning games back and forth taking down alza and let's discuss the standings now because that is really important these are the standings if if you're not interested in me spoiling the results of the other games don't watch anymore stop watching but if you are here are the standings uh gues now in sole lead after the penultimate round of the 2024 F candidates tournament uh followed by Yanni pish hiar Nakamura and Fabiano corana on eight points and Then followed by Prague viit ala and N so now the only players that have a chance at winning the candes tournament are gukesh nepo Hikaru and Fabiano and we couldn't we couldn't possibly have a better final round because in the final round gukesh gukesh will be facing Hikaru and Fabiano will be facing nepo in the final round gukesh will have black against Hikaru and and uh Fabby will have the white pieces against nepo so it's hard to say Fabby with white against nepo uh we could we could definitely say that he's the favorite I mean he is 2800 he has I mean both of them have won the the candidas tournament before uh but yeah gukesh having black against Hikaru that will not be an easy one but he is half a point ahead of everyone else so uh yeah uh imagine if if gukesh and Hikaru draw their game and uh nepo and Fabi also draw their game then GES wins the candidates tournament so you know it's all it's up to him of course he will not do anything crazy like push push uh inconsiderably with black but yeah I mean I can't even imagine what will happen in the final round but I am very much very much looking forward to it and while this has all been happening uh we uh probably uh forgot to to check out the the live ratings but gues is now higher rated than world champion ding on the live ratings look at him he's 2762 and uh with a win against hikaro in the final round he probably overtakes abdat as well and could could uh you know get world number five that would be absolutely incredible uh and yeah he would go into into the world CH championship match as the high rated player even if you know yeah if he beats Karu if he beats iaru maybe even with a draw against saru hearu is higher rated yeah with a win or with a draw against Hikaru if he wins the candidates tournament he goes into the world CH championship match uh as as the favorite I guess you know via VIA ratings yeah incredible incredible stuff incredible win uh by GES against ala this was uh I mean quite a quite quite quite a performance we'll see what happens in the final round I will keep you guys informed uh so that's the game hope you guys enjoyed it I would like to thank Johan Bridger Jeffrey D Philipe Georgio Glide Bane and bullet thriller.com
