english pronunciation wasn't already tricky enough there are actually hidden sounds in a lot of words and if there's a word that you're working on and it just doesn't sound quite right it could be because there is at least one hidden sound in there so the sounds i'm talking about specifically are the y consonant as in yes or yoga and the w as in where or why so let's practice listening for these sounds in a few words and then of course we'll practice saying them together sound like a plan all right let's dive in so first let's listen for the y consonant and let's start with this word curious curious do you hear it yeah yeah cure here here yeah right there in that first syllable curious curious she's always been very curious yeah try these with me i'm curious about that all right what about this one priority priority again we've got a hidden yeah here do you hear it prior your prior priority yeah let's make this a priority yeah and if you're looking at my transcription here and you're wondering what the heck is that little symbol looks like an apostrophe right in front of this second syllable here that's a stress mark that's showing us where the primary stress syllable is in this word we're going to stretch that syllable make it a little longer you'll see me do the hand cue this helps you know how long to hold your vowel i suggest you do it with me priority yeah go ahead try this one where's the yeah in creative creative right there in front of or at the beginning of our second syllable create ea ea creative good he's always been very creative all right how about this one failure failure where's the hidden yeah yeah failure you're you're you're you're do you hear it there it's a very quick final syllable that begins with the sound failure failure don't the beginning of our final syllable is our what w sound graduate and this is our verb form the actual act of graduating i'm going to graduate next fall and if we make it a noun the actual person who's graduating is a graduate graduate yeah do you hear the difference there we still have our hidden w but that final syllable is pronounced differently with with graduate yeah she's a recent graduate all right try this one where's the w in situation situation right there at the beginning of our third syllable situation that's our stressed syllable as well situation it's a difficult situation all right what about this one all right we're increasing our complexity here this one has both the hidden and the hidden do you hear it unusual unusual on you on you jewel jewel unusual yeah it's an unusual situation all right this one has both too see if you can hear it evaluate evaluate you ate you wait you ate you ate dinner it sounds like you ate 8 u8 u8 evaluate evaluate let's evaluate the plan yeah go ahead all right this one has both as well can you hear it genuine genuine you win you win yeah like you win the game you win genuine genuine right at the beginning of our third and fourth syllable hear environment environment environ environment do you hear it there hidden y right there at the beginning of the third syllable environ yearn this is definitely one of those syllables that does not sound the way you would think it would looking at the letters and viron is what you might want to say but it's your your your environ environment yeah protect the environment all right what about this one aneurysm aneurysm yeah this one came up this week in office hours in the academy one of my clients is a nurse she was working on aneurysm we found that hidden yeah that's right right at the beginning of the second syllable and you're and your aneurysm yeah an aneurysm is the weakening of an artery wall it can cause ballooning of the artery um it could cause the artery to burst which could be bad aneurysm all right what about this one cooperation what do you hear cooperation did you hear the co-op co-op cooperation yeah cooperation between people cooperation between companies yeah all right try this one civilian which hidden sound is here civilian yeah did you hear it that ye hidden y sound at the beginning of our final syllable civilian there were several civilians involved civilian got it all right but here's another fun word that came up in office hours with my nurse coagulation coagulation i'll give you a hint this one has both coagulation do you hear it coagula coagula coagulation yeah this means for something that's liquid to become thicker or more solid coagulation used a lot to talk about blood in the medical field the blood might coagulate coagulation
