okay I thought we'd have a very quick look tonight at the installation of high lock fasteners and installation alternative fasteners in general now this we're replacing a spark up here you've probably seen if you've watched previous videos in accordance with the manufacturer's service bulletins and we are allowed to use these fasteners as an alternative originally it was some kind of a fastener look threaded initially but it's not there actually any other grooves on the end there so had some kind of collar press squeeze crimped onto it somehow I don't know that's the fastener we've taken out by by grinding the collar away with little carbide burr and just splitting it open and then drive the fastener out with a punch the thing we're going to put back because they're available is a high lock and we've had to use an oversize because the metric fasteners in there before left holes that were like about a sour a quarter which doesn't give us an interference fit for these fasteners so these are about ten flower oversize they're about ten fell over quarter I think anyway I've got a reamer six point seven Miller that gives me a good interference fit okay so the other thing I notice and this is something to watch when you have placed fasteners these original French ones have got no radius in here under the head there is a shop corner there in fact there may even be a little relief so you could bolt these down to a flat drilled hole the high lock and na s bolts and a lot of structural fasteners these days will have a radius in here just good practice what that does mean is that it's gonna need a tiny relief like a tiny shaffer not much more than a good deeper on the on the aft face where the fastener goes through from this side to that side of bear in mind if you're ever replacing you know like rivets with structural screws or or in this case some weird French thing with a high lock you'll need to just make provision for this relief here okay the next thing to bear in mind is that you can probably see by looking at the nut it's a very lightweight aluminium thing this fastener is designed and and actually the size of the head is also clue this fastener is designed primarily for shear loads and if you look at its application we'll have a little bit of a look at that later it is connecting our web and a spar web to a cap and the loads there are predominantly shear loads it's kind of how it works now what that means is that it needs to be a good fit in the hole and actually in this case it calls for an interference fit but between 2/10 and half of our well half an hour on a court fastener it's going to be quite tight and I think this reamer is giving me the more in the way of the 2/10 but I'm pretty confident that it's within spec so we'll ring the hole will drive the fastener in and we'll look at the installation all right hopefully here's my reamer coming through using a hand reamer carefully here you can get a problem with hand remus in this time job in that if you don't support the head or if the whole you know clearing a hole is not close to the size that you're reaming you can get in the wobbling about and making a chronical hole but in this case we're not getting that we're getting a nice smooth sort of non shuddering turn so I think we're getting a nice round hole we've had a nice parallel hole which is you know it's important now when this rumor comes through keeping a bit of pressure on it I'm gonna take it all the way through now take it back again cause don't these chips making marks inside the hole so we'll just release the tap wrench and pull it through one will install the fastener jams checking the hole we can see there as a parallel hole with a very tiny relief just actually more of a deeper tiny shaffer at the top that will accept that radius and it's been cutting all the way through I can see quite clearly it's cut nice and round against all the layers there so we should be good to go now it's gonna be an intern an interference fit so which it is that's gonna need to be driven in with a few taps and if necessary a block in front it's gonna give it some light tap servers down between two tents I feel that's what we got and you also notice there's a little bit of shank sticking through there I used a grit gauge first which told me I needed a - twelve fastener and looking at the amount of shank sticking through there that's the correct fastener for the job so let's install the nut and where the height we're going on by hand initially there are installation tools for these sockets with holes in the middle and everything because there is a hex key socket in the middle there to hold the fastener from turning but on thicker sections like this if you fit is good it won't turn after norisse bone will do the job you don't want a spanner with a big offset because you want to snap off the nut top using purely a rotational talk any kind of leverage which is gonna cause it to separate prematurely I'll go talk I've seen people install these and look as though there's nothing really easily it's because they're not pulling them straight so I'm twisting very carefully keeping the spanner nice and straight when we reach the required tool off snaps the wrenching part of the nut you can see there go about two threads showing tube one two as we have on these that's a good indication there is actually a grip gauge like a go/no gauge that I can put on here now to check that I've got the correct protrusion but the others are all 12 so I know this is right you see I've marked this one here some reason neither picked the wrong - number at the back or something I haven't got thread showing so that's gonna have to be done again I have to remove that collar with a little butt split it drive the fastener out and put another one in but these things happen so there should be hopefully a good job I could buy a lot of them to do mimes in the end I got a few more holes to drill to the end there so a bit of work to do and has to be done correctly they're quite critical they're not put in there to make up the numbers so need to spend a bit of time on that okay if you've enjoyed what you've seen tonight please like subscribe and share thank you very much good night
