[Music] hi cool roadies can you believe it we are back in the campground where what where quilt roadies began i know it's kind of a surreal thing it didn't even dawn on me till yesterday when g and i were hiking around i said didn't we do our first quilt roadie video here and he said yes full circle full circle we're going to make this a little bit on the quick side because my battery is running down and we are in a campground that um i have the ability to charge up and everything but uh i want to make this a one shot deal for you and we have zero wi-fi zero wi-fi so there's no connection to the internet or to the world outside we are here by ourselves but i wanted to share with you the fact that hexies are the best thing to do well on the road and so i've got my whole hexi set up it all came in this little cute hexi lunch pail and i've got my baby iron i've got my ironing pad and i've got my hexis i kind of prep them all ahead of time i'm doing spring daisies stitcheries hexi every saturday she gives out a new theme to make your hexi and she's going to be doing it all year and so the first one you might have seen on social media was sky now because i didn't read the directions and now i'm catching up we're supposed to do two of them every week two of these which is no big deal no big deal so my second set of hexis and i i prepped everything ahead of time so my hexis little deals are clipped together with the little red clips so i know what goes with what my second skye hexy is going to be star wars star wars and then this week's hexi is food or drink and so i have done beer although we aren't beer drinkers and fortune cookie fortune cookie hexy so i just wanted to give you an idea of what i do i have my background squares all cut out and she gives you'll have to go check her out i have a link on the side of my blog i'll also put a link in the description box of this one so i have my squares i bought this topography fabric from stitch and post and i have them all cut out ahead of time i have my hexis all cut out and ready to go and what i do is i lay each hexi out and i use everybody uses something different i use these pre-cut hexi squares and these will last like two or three uses and when i pull them out of the back i just put in put them under an iron and they flatten back out but for the most part these are good for several tries so i center my hexi paper i'm going to center it on the back side the wrong side of my fabric and i cut that i got this at the stitching post too and it's a tula pink uh hexi template and what this you don't actually need this you could use this as your guide the paper is your guide but what this does nicely is you can see through it and so you can if you want us a fussy cut hexis so i have my beer mug i'm gonna center my paper over it and then i take this what this is is it's a sponge pen and i got this at the stitching post and i fill it with water to here and then i put a few drops of starch in it and then this i kind of paint the edge i paint the edge of the fabric around the paper hexy paper then i take my iron and i iron the fabric over the paper this little iron and i got this iron at the stitching post too too this little iron is the most it's the best little iron i'm not only is it compact i am like shocked at how much heat and power and it even steams if you want to if you need steam oh that gets hot that gets hot then i turn it over and i can give it a good press so there's my first hexi see now i'm going to put the other pieces around it and i just kind of want to get an idea of how i want to lay those out and i chose this dot fabric because what can i say it remind me of bubbles yeah so that's going to be good now i'm going to do the same thing i'm gonna take my hexy papers and the hexi papers come in a pack i got these at the stitching post they're kind of in a pack like that and there's a whole bunch of them they'll last for a very long time but hexis are they're really a no-brainer and they're so fun it's a relaxing easy when you think about the supplies you need to take with you camping or traveling this is a great travel packet project package a great travel project the thread i use is now different people have different ideas i i have to tell you this is just my way of doing it the thread i use is a silk thread it's a a silk yli made in japan and then the appropriate needle i'm leaving the paper in the hexi there it is my second one i'm going to try and try to hook that in and see if i can keep that battery going yeah there we go and this pen is a little sponge pen and you fill it up with water to about there and then you put about five drops of this starch this is a fabric folding pen liquid five drops in there and then you just shake it up and you kind of have a little um starch pen that helps helps you fold over fold over the fabric so have you guys been doing i hope some of you will join me in this hexi journey i think it's going to be um because it's not there isn't a lot of a lot to do in a week you know you just have to make two hexy flowers a week which is really that's at the most at the most a couple of hours of work per week and you end up at the end of the year you're going to end up with this fabulous boy this little iron it's a dritz iron um you know i might have even got i have two of these because i travel so much and um i think one of these i even got a walmart so when you're making these remember you leave the paper inside there's another one and i already used these papers on this hexi the the crow hexi so it doesn't even they look brand new they it doesn't even look like they as long as you're careful when you're sewing them the hexi the little hexagon together and not to go through the paper too much um it's a very lightweight cardboard even though we don't have wi-fi or internet access at all up here every so often uh something will come through it's kind of weird it's it's not any rhyme or and i did get a notice that my seuspargo order was shipped for her new program which is all about the insta stitch with the um squash like i need another program i need another hand work program that's just crazy the fun part about hexis is if you your center motif if you cut it cut it out you know it's uh it's so fun and i know that monique um from old world quilt shop sent me some great um great um sailing fabric that i am definitely going to cut and make that the center of one of my hexis whenever it's appropriate whatever the appropriate week is you know and this is kind of soft so you know you can squeeze a little bit to get the liquid out i tell you that the sound of that water is just so relaxing there is no better sound i mean i literally when i go in the past i should say in the past when i've been to my friend lori's she has a house over on the coast and you know i i was born on a beach and i grew up on the beach and so when i'm at her house at the beach i i fall asleep like a baby i'm just like a baby it's so soothing to me i i told g um i told g that i need to get to the beach this cannot be the first year of my life where i did not get to the ocean you know i just i can't even fathom that that could even be possible and i know a lot of the beach communities here in oregon it's kind of a love-hate relationship with tourists you know but we're good tourists you know we wear our masks and um we socially distance we just want to hear the ocean you know we just want to hear the ocean heck if lori didn't have such a steep driveway i would be parking in her driveway see we already have we only have two more to prep and then we're ready to sew it's really really a fun quick project and i'm not going to make you sit through my whole sewing i just want to show you a bit of how i do it once i get these all prepped because i know you're all going to want to jump on board and check out spring daisy because i think i read that she's a science teacher so i remember i met this one lady gosh her name escapes me she she was like down in the reading california area and she's she's like a hexy queen and um she she just does this part of it with fabric and has boxes of boxes of prepped hexis that um and so whenever she has the mood to make a hexy quilt or make something she already has these prepped and ready to stitch one more to go and we're at the sewing stage and there's all different sizes that you can make of the hexis you know i even have i mean in my seuss bargo um stitching sue will use little tiny like a quarter inch hexy paper you know how small that is it's just crazy but it's not impossible to do because hexis are pretty darn satisfying and simple i don't know if you could hear that thumping that's actually the little girl in the next campsite jumping around inside their camper it's almost like living in an apartment building with the but our our spot is so private we don't have anybody on the other side of us we have the river on the other side of us okay i'm going to lay it out for you before i start stitching so you can kind of get an idea of what it will look like okay let's see if i can get it on this card here okay see there it is now i have to sew them together so the way i sew it together is i just start taking two of them and i clip them together like this let's see i want them to this to be opposite so and so i'm going to take this little red clip and i'm going to clip that together to hold it together like that because i'm only going to be stitching it on one side the thing that people don't like about silk thread is that it keeps coming unthreaded and so i when i thread it i tie a knot at the top it's so um it's it's so thin but strong silk is very strong that when you tie a knot at the top it is not um gonna obstruct your stitching and then i tie a knot at the bottom and i i tend to use in all of my hand applique i tend to use one color uh and i know i have a friend mary ellen in carmel valley who has and i bought every color available of this yli but i find that i use this color which is just kind of a beige beige color and for everything that i'm stitching so all i do is i take that thread and i've got the two i'm going to be stitching this edge only you know i figure out which edge i'm going to be stitching and i take that silk thread and i just kind of do a whip stitch just on the edge and you can feel the paper that you want to just avoid going through the paper and you can tell let me tell you you'll know if you the paper and then i just whip stitch it down with a little l you know where i bring it through and then i loop my needle through the loop and and you know about every eighth inch i'm taking a stitch and then going forward and i'm just going all along that one edge and that's the only edge that i'm going to stitch on that first stitch and then i keep adding a hexi and as i go around there comes a point where you kind of have to fold the paper a bit to get the to stitch the edge and it's okay it's okay to fold that paper after you pop the papers out and you're going to stitch it onto your fabric your background fabric you're going to be popping the paper out before you do that and some of the paper will be a little bent and just so you know you just press it with an iron for just a second and it flattens back out again and you can use it a few more times before you have to throw it away so i'm going i'm almost to the end here and then i'm going to knot it off i'm not going to cut my thread and take my needle off till i see where i want to stitch next and i'm at the end and i'll just do it i'll do two stitches to knot it off at the end and then um and then i'll show you so i'm leaving my needle on because i'm not quite sure where i'm going next i'm going to unclip and i'm going to open it up and see now i have these two pieces stitched together and it's going to kind of go like that then i need to fit my next piece on which the reason i haven't not cut my thread off is i can fit this next piece on right here and i'll show you that and then i clip that together with the so this next piece i've clicked clipped together is the pink and it's to be sewn on this edge and here's my needle so i'm just going to stitch upwards until there and then i'll cut it off and open it up and i'll keep doing that all the way around until it's done and it's as simple as that um piece of cake i mean it's a piece of cake uh and it's so much fun i'll just do this next one so you can get an idea and once i get it all stitched together i know this is kind of a boring part just watching me stitch like this but once i get it all stitched together i i use i spray the whole thing before i take my paper the paper that's remaining in it some of the paper might have popped out but when before i attach it to my background i will spritz it with this and this is called flatter and it just makes every block it just is flat as can be that's why it's called flatter and um i have bigger bottles that i use at home but i have this little travel travel bottle to fit in my my little case and i got that and it comes in different flavors that's the best part and i discovered it because the company came to cultures affair one year and demoed it they put a bottle in every um in every classroom and so people could try it and i just fell in love with it and it comes in different flavors like pineapple there's a floral you know but i tend to get the unscented this is yeah scentless just because i have so many allergies that you know i never know what's going to trigger it especially nowadays boy you don't want to be sneezing or coughing in with anybody within six feet of you because they're gonna freak out so all i'm doing with this hexi is stitching all the way around and connecting all my petals and then i'll just stitch it with the same thread to the background fabric boy i sure do have a pile of quilts to tack the binding down on definitely going to be a winter project so now i'm just doing an extra knot now i'm going to cut clip that off get i'll thread that with a new piece of thread and then let me show you how that came out so here we go so now i'm going to you see how this is not attached yet to there and i need to attach that so what i'm going to do is what you'll see here is i'm going to use my little clip to hold it and it kind of like is a three-dimensional thing and that's okay and i'm going to stitch this edge and then i'll just keep working my way around and it's as simple as that and then once i get it all down on the fabric it's just a matter you know it's not even needle turn applique i'm doing because the edge is already under i'm not having to flip it under it's all ready to go and i'm going to attach it to the background and i'll have another hexi done so thank you thank you so much for uh hanging in there through this step by step g and i are going to head out and we're going to actually go walk the trail where we filmed one of our first video from try to find that bridge and uh yeah it's full circle for a full circle for us it's been an awesome break from reality let me tell you to be here and um i'm grateful that you stopped by [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you
