[Music] [Applause] [Music] the hottest topic in boats right now is electric boats and we are lucky enough to be here in fabulous tauranga looking at the new hurley 3400 electric power cat with range extender let's see what's inside this roger hill design 3400 model is a culmination of four years development and the key feature of this boat is the fully electric drive twin 100 kilowatt electric motors push the super efficient hull to a top speed that is a shade over 20 knots the onboard battery bank will allow her to run completely under battery power for a couple of hours at a more modest cruising speed top speed is not everything and the ability to slip out of a marina berth completely silently is almost unreal since the motors can run literally from one rpm she is far far easier to maneuver at slow speeds around a marina than most fossil fuel boats which have a minimum idle speed typically just under a thousand rpm and she has another trick up her sleeve because boating should not have limits the range extender system includes 120 kilowatt permanent magnet diesel generator she can run continuously at 14 knots using just 0.73 liters of diesel per nautica mile or at 9 knots using just half a liter this first model was specified with the smallest possible battery bank size and she can tick along for up to 36 nautical miles on battery alone there is enough space for the battery capacity to be doubled or even tripled sports mode lets her run on batteries and generator and gives her maximum speed hence this boat offers just about the best of everything a good top speed for both the size a large total range when required and completely silent running when you prefer to be emission free the cabin roof is covered with 14 high-efficiency solar panels providing self-charging capacity for the extensive list of onboard accessories these include fridge freezer running hot and cold fresh water large screen tv stereo system navigation electronics and of course insert led lights everywhere including below the waterline [Music] the 10.4 meter length and 4.7 meter beam stands out with a stunning space gray sedan style hull smoky grey glass windows and contrasting tan coloured decking and upholstery in the cockpit the cataman configuration provides space for two double cabins in the forward area each with a generous size double bed a toilet on the port side and a separate shower to starboard provide facilities for extended cruising the saloon area is beautifully finished in matching tan leather look vinyl trim and the walnut cabinetry and pure white headliner is very stylish the galley is compact and efficient with a sink fridge and stove unit with a double hob and oven the hob and oven are a wallace diesel combo stove unit which means that neither petrol nor lpg needs to be carried on this boat it runs on the same diesel that provides for the extended range the windows on either side of the saloon feature a unique cut out sliding section that is very elegant opposite the galley is a triangular dining table and l-shaped couch that faces the wide open rear saloon doors and it is out through those doors that most time will be spent an island console out in the large cockpit area provides a bait board live bait well with tuna tubes sink rubbish bins storage lockers and saltwater wash down hose the floor is covered in sea deck for a comfortable barefoot experience and easy cleaning the boarding platform is the full width of the boat and the running gears tucked well out of the way of both swimmers and fishing gear alongside the cabin sides is a wide walkway similarly finished off in sea deck generous grab rails make it easy to walk up outside the cabin to the wide fall deck where a large drum winch and a stainless anchor take care of keeping her at station everywhere the standard of finish from the elegant paintwork on the outside of the cabin to the fine stitching on the interior squabs shows attention to the finest detail the helm station just slightly to starboard of the center line of the main cabin provides a plush two-person helm seat that would be comfortable for even extended sessions at the helm when not in use this folds down to provide easy walkthrough access to the starboard cabin and shower given the technology that is under the hood the helm display surprisingly simple the helm is connected hydraulically to conventional rudders in each hull and there is a unified twin throttle control that would not look out of place in an episode of star trek the only other controls are a switch for the anchor winch and controls for stereo everything else is elegant electronics either controlled by the three black glass touchscreens or an array of backlit c-zone electronic touch buttons lots of effort has gone into developing the software and systems to control this technology and the result is an elegant and simple interface that even the most analog boaty should be able to understand in essence everything is fly by wire those high-tech throttle controls merely control the computers that manage the propulsion system the propulsion system is supplied by electric boats this includes the motors controllers helm displaying controls batteries and battery management systems it is surprising how tiny and clean the motors actually are driving a planetary 2.84 to 1 gearbox they turn shafts and conventional bronze propellers through fairly standard drive hardware the motors themselves are cooled by closed circuit glycol based coolant that is itself kept cool through a saltwater heat exchanger hidden in the starboard side hull is the 600 kilograms of batteries the 640 liter fuel capacity is split evenly in tanks to port and starboard we did not have the need to start up the generator but given it does not need to transfer any thrust to the hull itself it can be completely isolated from sound and vibration this is a simply stunning boat with leading edge propulsion this boat gives away nothing in size or luxury electric boats are undoubtedly the way of the future john eichelsheim from boating new zealand thanks for watching if you'd like
