so you guys may remember that I sold this Tundra a little while to a friend but now he's trying to sell it again so we're gonna store it at my house a little while while we try to find a buyer and in the meantime I figured I'd make a video comparing it to the Chevy Silverado so I admit that this title is clickbait and there are many examples of Toyota cars that are better than Chevy cars and I know that there's gonna be a ton of Toyota fanboys who come to this video click dislike without watching anything and then go saunter off with their life and cry - Scottie Kilmer but I'm making this video because I'm annoyed with some of the bias that other youtube mechanics have towards Toyota and against General Motors and Fiat Chrysler this video I'm gonna show you why General Motors and Chevrolet actually makes better trucks than Toyota I'm just gonna be focusing on trucks in this video not cars and also mainly just focusing on old trucks these two are from very similar errors that's a 2000 that's in 1995 it's got a v8 it's got a v8 so let's go over these and I'll tell you why I'd rather have the Chevy than this Toyota first of all this is still true today Toyota prices their vehicles way more expensively than Chevy so that MSRP was $23,000 this is the base model it was 23 grand back in 2000 this is not even the base model it's a 2500 and it's got options like the diesel engine and automatic windows and it was priced at 17,000 if we convert that to 2000 money when that truck was made that would equal $19,000 so if these were both sold in 2000 that would be 23,000 this would be 19,000 you're paying four grand more and they've got pretty much the same amenities and electric windows electric locks we even eat that in a truck anyway I don't know even today in 2018 a brand new Toyota Tundra base model has $31,000 and a base model Chevy Silverado is 28,000 so why is it $3,000 difference it's not $3,000 better but then of course some people are gonna cry to me saying that well Toyota is $3,000 better because it's gonna last longer and it's gonna be cheaper to maintain in the long run first of all General Motors parts are weighty per than a Toyota because I just spent $800 on a steering rack on that thing which I know it was OEM so I shouldn't spent that much but whatever I did and this guy is like 200 bucks for the OEM steering rack and let's talk about reliability because that's what these u-tube mechanics are saying well the Toyota is way more reliable than this Jevon you're gonna go through five transmissions on this before you go through one on these this truck has two hundred twelve thousand miles on it original engine and transmission this truck has three hundred thirty thousand miles on it with the original drivetrain so they've both done their job in mileage but this one's gone further than this one and this one still runs better than this ones and yes I know this is a diesel so it's different than a gas motor diesels usually run longer than they it's less wear on the engines to run that long but still it was cheaper than the Toyota so who cares so I'll go ahead and start these up so you can see how both of these run just for their mileage what they sound like so this is a two hundred twelve thousand mile motor starter up from the fuel pump okay so the first thing you can hear has an exhaust manifold leak second thing you can hear is as a power steering wine you hear the catalytic converters pretty bogged up down there Oh what is it weekend oh my god and it's gotta use fuel line link apparently it's leaking fuel pretty bad out of the rusted fuel line which Toyota didn't replace in the frame recall the engine still holds good oil pressure as you can see it does have a check engine light on I'll show you the odometer and if it looks over so yeah we're at two hundred thirteen thousand and this is a obd one so you got the airbag light and check engine light so as you heard the tundra is running fine it's got a couple of things it needs it needs something with the exhaust manifolds it needs a power steering stop wine or replace the pump or something and it needs a fuel line fix for sure go ahead and start up the Chevy which as you can see is that three hundred and twenty nine thousand miles we'll just let the globe plug cycle fired right up got the aftermarket radio in here bit of a rattle from the turbo housing but other than that it runs great effect the blow by no blow by on the 300,000 island still running like new acrobatic I gotta fix that tuck Allison no boots no cutter the golf over here looking at the oil pressure it's holding above 40 pounds and this isn't even a cold engine I've been running it today all day all right let's shut her down shuts down really fast too so another thing that Chevy did a little better than Toyota and I really mean a little better it's really not much better than Toyota but it was rust Prevention's so if we take a look at this Tundra this has all just been metal taped over rocker panels under here are gone the back fender is the same story here this kind of can move when ya hit it like that up down the tailgate look at this that's coming undone it's been bondo'd here the bed's got a piece of plywood on it cuz there are holes underneath it this fenders really good I don't know why I think it's been bonded and then we got some holes up here to go back there and of course we all know about the frame recall which this truck had done to it but the thing is if you live in New England and you see these trucks around even the ones with the frame recalls they're already rusting through again so I don't know what Toyota did but they with their new frames I pretty sure they just used the same techniques as their old frames so they're just gonna rust her again in ten years which is just cheeping out by Toyota which is something that General Motors is usually known for so of course the Chevy's from the 90s were also not good at rust prevention so starting to rust a little bit around the cab corner and the bottom of the doors not too bad they get to the other side so again we got the same rust spot there and just the bottom of the door back there starting to get a little crusty the frame on this truck is super super good but anyway even if you're a Toyota guy you got to admit Toyota is not good at rest proofing another thing that bugs me is Toyota for some reason put a timing belt in these trucks so they got to be changed every hundred thousand miles or 90 thousand miles or whatever and that's a two thousand dollar job or if you find a good mechanic maybe can get it done for 1,200 bucks but it's expensive nowadays they have the chain luckily they also do these weird designs on these Toyota's where the starter is buried in the middle of the engine I've replaced the starter on this guy you can see my youtube video on that even on the new Tundras they put the starter in an absolutely unaccessible place and the starter jobs on these tenders are like over a thousand bucks or between maybe eight hundred two thousand bucks which is insane these guys is just whatever get underneath it unbolt it pull the new one and you're good to go the new Toyota Tundra there's a really common issue with the camshaft tower leaking which is a super expensive fix sometimes you need a new engine I think the engineers just figured they want to make a lot of money off of the consumer with repair so they designed everything kind of wonky getting back to rust problems in the short period of time I had this truck I went through let's see two fuel lines one brake line a rear leaf spring and now my other leaf spring the shackle on it is broken from rust so I mean come on Toyota either fix it with the frame recall or get it right in the first place I don't understand what the issue was so I'm just making this video to try to show you guys that you shouldn't believe just one opinion especially not Scotty Kilmer's because he's super biased to Toyota but you should get both sides of the story so my side of the story is that I've had better luck with General Motors and Toyota in my trucks maybe not everybody's had that experience i tota makes really great trucks this one made it to two hundred thousand miles which is good the 4.7 liter engine is great they also have a great four-cylinder the 2.7 four cylinder that they put into comas was bulletproof and the 3.6 v6 was also very good I don't like how they all have timing belts but whatever it's there's still good engines I'm sorry for my rant but I just wanted to get my voice out there and let you know you shouldn't just believe one side of the story you got to look at both sides
