hey welcome back to another out of spec reviews range test i've got with me the 2022 bolt euv not just an ev anymore you got the u the utilitarian and it's i guess fairly utilitarian a little bit bigger than the normal bolt some decent trunk space and stuff but today i'm taking it on our special 70 mile an hour range test to see just how far we can go and here it is the volt euv just wrapping up its charging session here which by the way that's kind of the weak point of the bolt i think 50 kilowatts is about the peak so i'm at 99 state of charge i have been sitting here for some time let me tell you um you'll see kyle's charging video which is either out or coming but yeah this is the bolt euv so electric utility vehicle supposedly a bit bigger than the bolt ev and i think it's actually quite a good size and it actually looks pretty good too the bolt wasn't necessarily a looker i remember when i first saw it back in 2016 at the nashville auto show didn't look great but it was one of the other ev options other meaning not tesla but i think with the updated styling it looks pretty decent definitely chevy very chevy but that's fine totally fine and this thing is a bargain so charging is almost wrapped up so let me just show you really quick no power liftgate he's just manual so i'm trying to see what you sacrifice by getting a bolt over something else pretty good chunk space got an evs e right there with chevy badging on it just looks yeah decent decent trunk and here's a big thing the rear leg room i'm sitting behind myself tons of space this is quite a good well okay maybe not amazing the back seat and my hat is hitting the headliner but for kids ample room back here can't complain and wow even rear heated seats you have heated and cooled seats in the front that's fantastic heated and cooled seats you have the bose stereo which by the way you also have a sunroof it's the sun and sound package that's what they call it which is the upgraded bose stereo which is actually one of the better bose stereos i have heard i like it in here much better than the bose stereo that's in the gmc sierra that we had recently tuned for this car very well plus the almost panoramic moon roof is full power which is nice um electric or camera rear view mirror which is fine it's actually not super good quality camera and blue cruise this is going to be a great little range test for me here today so qi charger down here you do have a sport mode in case you want to take your bolt on the track or something yeah um but let's see what other options i mean it's really pretty well specced like i said piano black kind of everywhere but for all of this stuff you're only paying about 37 grand which is crazy this feels pretty nice not amazing but like i'm going to say on par with id4 for less money in fact i like certain things about this interior more than 94. it looks like we have wrapped up charging it thinks i'll do 233 miles i just reset all the trip computer and everything it lets you get very nerdy with what consumption you're using and how all that works i'll show you in the car but we are heading out charging just finished 100 state of charge the epa claims this will do 247 miles now that's not necessarily highway that is a mixed driving figure so we're going to see how this compares it stinks 233 it can do up to 276 or down to 188 depending on how you drive which is interesting sport mode off there isn't actually an eco mode so not doing that we are off really drives pretty well i just i think this is one of the best bargains the euv itself starts at 27 000 which is a phenomenal deal and then of course once you add the sound system the panoramic sunroof supercruise and all that then it's uh it does creep up but still great value honestly i think it's comparable to the highest specked leaf and this will go further on a charge drives nicer looks nicer just feels more modern than the leaf the leaf is running on its own coattails a bit too long i'd say can't wait to drive the aria but in the meantime this is what we're working with and this is affordable economy-minded evs so we're gonna see how far we can go at 70 miles an hour i don't know if you can hear that but i think that's the worst blinker sound i've ever heard so that is one thing you are sacrificing by buying this car as any remotely good blinker sound but i love how nerdy this car gets you get the actual kilowatts of energy that you're using at any given moment and you have all the screens over here for the actual charging and energy usage and everything it's awesome there we go i have the steering wheel which lets me know blue cruise is capable and ready so i've got it set to 70 miles an hour now the first thing i'm going to do is gps verify this wow how about that 70 miles an hour indicated is 70 miles an hour gps verified so that's what i'm going to do for these tests by the way we run climate control on automatic at anywhere from 68 to 72 degrees because every car is a little bit different if it has automatic fan and lets you control the speed we do the lowest setting this does so i have it on auto low so the lowest fan speed i have the heated seats cooled seats all that turned off i don't know if this has heated steering wheel actually i didn't see a button for that but oh yeah it does of course it does has everything this bolt is fully loaded um but don't have any of that turned on really is just eco-minded road tripping is what i'm trying to emulate and the car claims it would do 233 when i left the charger i think i will get 230. side note how do you love my burt's bees sized chapstick holder right there that is perfect i really do like this interior i don't actually like buttons like this for shifting not not a fan of that but otherwise fully blown i love how big the traction control off button is that's great sometimes i like to navigate to the final destination which is the gas station i intentionally never navigate to the charger because i don't want the car to do any sort of preconditioning i don't know if the preconditions i don't imagine it does with the abysmal charging speed that it has um but it also does not show you what you will arrive somewhere what state of charge you'll arrive somewhere with so not really any point in navigating back to it um because sometimes i'll do that just to see what the car thinks i'll have when i navigate you know to such and such and then back and see how close it is but the bolt nope doesn't matter anyways beautiful beautiful out here northern colorado southern wyoming just stunning views uh what other evs will i see on the road model y apparently um yeah so i also checked wind speed and we'll have basically a little bit of a headwind or a little bit of a tailwind coming out of colorado and then a little bit of a crosswind about five miles an hour so very minimal shouldn't be detrimental in any major ways of course a crosswind is not ideal but it's impossible really to not have any crosswind like very rare so i'd say it's fairly realistic but a crosswind is a bummer because you don't unlike a headwind on a trip like this i would cancel that out by going forwards and then coming back crosswind hits you both both ways so slight bummer there otherwise really quite comfortable supercruise works fantastically well in this car very confident inspiring there's some cars like the volvo i tested on this range test i almost didn't want to use the lane centering because it was a bit like too jerky like the wheel was always rotating this still has a little bit of that but it's not ping-ponging in any way it's just constant love it one other thing to note here is there are no actual like battery percentage i wish it would tell you that it's it's nerdy enough to tell you the kill watts it's using but there's no battery percentage icon i mean there's kind of an icon there's a bar so i'll basically update you every 25 increments like we always do i don't have the exact increment so i'll just kind of guess and let you know how we're doing so here we are at roughly 75 state of charge again i can't tell exactly because yeah not sure also i've noticed um super crews will sometimes not catch when i'm looking at the road i'm looking directly at the road and sometimes it'll start flashing this green thing which means oh pay attention and i'm like i'm already paying attention uh apparently like what fixes it is me temporarily going cross-eyed and then it catches that i'm actually looking forward super weird anyways how are we doing we've gone 60 miles which means we are on track for let's see the math would say 240 miles give or take i don't think we'll actually quite get there i think we have a little bit of a tailwind like i said so i will not be going all the way to 50 then turning around i'll be hopefully doing it around 55 it's gonna be hard to tell because of that stupid gauge that doesn't quite tell me what i want to know um but how are we doing i love this screen the screen is pretty cool oh let's see there we go times or since last full charge telling me like the various things and how they're affecting but i i guess i can't quite tell i guess that's miles like that's the miles that are in theory affected so climate is having a little bit of effect of course i would get a little bit more if i turn climate off um technique i guess highway driving means bad technique that's a little funny because i haven't done any hard accelerations at all i'm just sitting here at 70 doing nothing and uh yeah it's pretty cool readout i just love all these details and that's pretty cool too tells you basically what i would expect 96 percent is driving and everything else is climate just four percent no battery conditioning so i guess it does do battery conditioning if you route to a charger that's interesting um makes sense i mean it already doesn't charge fast you want to make sure it could charge as fast as it allows and then it shows you the kilowatt hours actually used which is pretty cool so yeah 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour so far let's see if that stays true um i was gonna guess low threes but maybe mid threes we'll find out just going to keep going here and i'll tune in um basically i'll tune in when i turn around it won't quite be 50 but that'll be roughly a halfway mark here's uh nebraska and here we are at our exit in potter nebraska not a whole lot to see um let's see what we're at so we've done 111 miles says we have 129 remaining in the tank 3.7 miles per kilowatt hour is the efficiency so should be enough to get back i've been hoping so since we've used 30 kilowatt hours um this is one of those easy turnarounds so not much traffic to worry about and we're basically gonna head back just over 50 you can't quite tell how much over again but you know should do the trick i think the wind is directly across wind so i'm hoping that means it won't actually affect us just water bottle now we're going to ease back up to 70 miles an hour which again is nice that it is indicated i've checked it a couple times just to make sure and yes 70 is accurate to the gps which is awesome so getting back up to speed here the idea is to basically be at 70 by the time we get to the actual highway and just barely there we go and then supercruise man has been awesome um just a couple times where i mentioned earlier there it is set on just a couple times that i mentioned earlier where would not realize i'm looking at the road but i'm going to say 98 or 99 perfection if i had to put a rate on that so just gonna keep driving by farmland back to wellington colorado and we'll see how far we get i'll check in again at a 25 state of charge we'll see how we're looking and hopefully we'll see that we can make it and we'll see how the final effect is on this thing because i know we're not gonna hit 247 but we may hit my goal of 2 30. we'll find out so couple quick things uh we're not quite 25 percent state of charge yet the seats aren't that comfortable so originally i was like this could be the best car except for the charging speed other than that it'd be great for road tripping but the seats i don't know i'm really not that comfortable the driver's side is fully adjustable not super adjustable you have lumbar control but not like 360 degree lumbar control and yeah i wouldn't like to sit in these seats all day this is hard enough doing a little over three hours of driving and then also the climate control as i mentioned has auto fan speed from anywhere from one to or low medium or high but you can't even get to that from the client menu you have to go into settings and then climb it and then adjust that's super weird to me i wish i was i wish that was an immediate button honestly just hit 25 percent or so these bars are a bit thick so it's really hard to tell when exactly i hit 25 percent but we have done 174 miles claims on the gesso meter 55 miles remaining we have 50 miles to our destination so that delta is actually shrinking a bit 54 miles now um i think because the wind even though it's a little bit of a cross one i think like five miles an hour it was slightly tailed on the way out so on the way back it's a little bit of a headwind and when i turn left on 25 to go south back to the charger it might be a direct headwind another reason we do this whole loop style test is so that the efficiency affected by elevation is undone essentially so what goes up must come down in other words onwards i'll let you know when we get to near the bottom of the pack um if i'm not mistaken if they haven't corrected it by the way this is on the newest software that is available for it but i think when this car gets down low it doesn't really tell you an estimate which is a bit uh scary so we'll see i'm going to play it a bit more safe i think than i would another car that shows actual mileage but we'll see maybe that's different not sure what percentage this happened at but the battery bar turned orange i think uh right about 35 miles remaining nope i was blocking the camera supercruise re-enabled so yeah um not sure but 31 miles estimated 28 miles to the charger so we'll see what it does at low state to charge we always like to see whether it cuts power or how it dictates what happens at the bottom of the battery pack gonna be interesting just got the charge vehicle soon symbol so not sure what that means either maybe that's ten percent state of charge um and down here we can see what we've done almost 60 kilowatt hours of energy used averaging 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour still says 96 to 4 for driving and accessories versus climate settings that's uh pretty expected i think and um impacts wow so you can see there what it thinks so the outside temperature is favorable climate control if we had turned it off it thinks we could have gotten nine more miles technique still not sure how they're calculating technique because i've been driving very eco-minded and i think that's just penalizing me for being on the highway for highway speeds and then terrain is like negligible not sure how it even calculates terrain actually quick update now it says propulsion power is reduced and the battery mileage estimator just went to low which is really not very helpful um so yeah you basically have no idea how far you can go now that you're at the bottom of the pack which is a bit frustrating it wasn't even down to 10 miles i thought maybe at 10 miles it tells you you can't keep going or it doesn't say that but it says propulsion power reduced we've done 220 miles um so in theory there's at least 10 miles remaining so i think i'm going to take the exit because there's no other eggs that's close enough to really call it safe so i'm going to take the exit for the charger and then do frontage roads which are close to highway speeds until yeah not sure there we are we've reached the last bar of the of the battery meter and now it's flashing low so two miles left to the charger i don't know how much how many fronted roads i'll get done but i think i'll go till the battery bar is no longer there that's kind of the plan it's really hard to know i couldn't find anyone who would actually say what this does at the bottom state of charge so i guess i'll find out and relay that information to the world all right here we are with that horrible turn signal noise at our exit getting some nice regen there just going to take these frontage roads i can tell power is definitely cut a bit it doesn't really tell me exactly how much it's cut but it is um so maybe go down to the next kind of turn around come back i don't know in theory they'll have a little bit of a buffer for people in this predicament but every electric car does it slightly differently so we'll find out so it really doesn't cut power as much as some other cars that lower state to charge at least not yet like when i did this in the volvo like the cars on that platform they cut power like crazy for example getting on this frontage road it was just unbelievably like unsafe in the volvo versus this i was able to get up to speed at no problem and you can see over here it says 63.3 kilowatt hours used so we're getting near the end of the battery i think ha i did it low battery is no longer flashing it is literally just there so we have got to be really close to the end i think um yeah it's wow and also my power is finally cut so that is when they cut power at the very bottom of the pack i literally like i mean it's not good to like floor and ev at the slow state of charge but the accelerator is clearly giving me no more than like six or seven kilowatts and it's even shrinking down a bit like it feels like i'm coasting back to the gas station or charging station in this case um in fact oh there we go four kilowatts oh my gosh okay well let's hope i can make it and here we are pulling back into the come and go our trusty old charging station anyways let's get this thing charged back up it is dead yeah it is empty charge vehicle now propulsion is limited all the messages and then over here on the screen you can see we've done 64.2 kilowatt hours out of i think the 65 kilowatt hour battery pack and not even know if that was usable or gross that's just what i found on the car terrain and technique i don't know how i still want to know how they calculate those but climate and temperature that's pretty straightforward so yeah we've we've used about all of it to its full extent so there you have it another successful out of spec range test bringing it down to the very bottom like we always do in the bolt uv what do you guys think of this thing by the way this is like ghost gray metallic or something like that ghost gray of course pretty good color i guess but i feel like if you get this you got to get it in some fun bright color or something but yeah 233.7 miles so what is that about 13 14 miles shy of the epa but at highway speed that's pretty impressive i'll take that it surpassed my 230 mile goal or estimate if you will so there you have it another out of spec range test let us know what you think of the bolt euv and especially versus the bolt ev hopefully we can test one of those soon too because they're rolling out and their prices have dropped and they're a very compelling option other than the charging rate that is just not great and i didn't love the seats that much but otherwise great car great price see you in the next one
