today we're going to take a look at the henry long ranger this particular one is chambered in 308 winchester this rifle has been on the market for several years now and is henry's answer to models such as the browning blr larger bore cartridges and a lever action firearm this has a easily detachable magazine as well you're looking at is the adjustable buckhorn site for the rear sight and this is married up with a highly visible and pronounced white bead on the front site it's enough to take a look at a firearm like this and think about the days of old when there was so much attention paid to the quality of the woods selected for the butt stock and the fore grip as well as the finish and fit what you see here is a matte receiver that is drilled and tapped for scope mounts and take a particular close look at the checkering job itself this is beautifully done obviously this is done with with lasers and machines as opposed to hand checkering some are better than others this one is phenomenal in my opinion the cycling of this firearm right out of the box was very smooth and i noticed in particular that the kick was minimal when shooting the 308 round butter smooth cycling it's got a gear action type mechanism to make that happen we'll take a little bit closer look at that in a minute hey guys it's david drake with gun news and reviews today gonna talk about the henry long ranger you might say well what what makes us different than other henry's well long ranger means that it has cartridges that are capable of longer range shooting than a lot of the pistol calibers certainly the 22s and smaller bore types of lever actions that henry's been producing for years a few years back they answered the call to a longer range hunting rifle more along the lines of for the type of hunting that i do which are two to three hundred yard shots at mule deer and antelope in montana you can see the wide variety of calibers 223 243 308 and also comes in 6.5 creedmoor sighted and unsighted version what's really cool about this it's a magazine fed lever action rifle as you can see right there it's a nice flush mount magazine it holds four rounds and it's got a fairly slick type of cycling scenario which i like as you can see as we showed you with the close-ups the fit and finish on this firearm are remarkable the the quality of the wood is great it's got a integral padded stock which is neither unsightly nor obnoxious just enough to help you out a little bit although i will tell you from the limited shooting that we did today uh this is not a obnoxious recoil type of firearm as i mentioned today was mostly a function test we didn't bring the tools we needed to make adjustments to those buckhorn sites and they did need adjustments so we'll be working on that as well as citing in a scope on a future video because we're real interested in showing you what kind of accuracy we're going to be able to provide you and that's the name of the game for long-range hunting right guys very smooth ejection on that [Music] so we shot this today with iron sights these did not come from the factory sighted in so i've got got some work to do along those lines uh but if i'm going to use this for a 200 yard shot with 308 i'm going to definitely mount a scope to the top and you can see that it's been tapped and ready to go for that so it's just a matter of accommodating a scope and we'll do a a more detailed video on shooting and accuracy later not a lot to report on accuracy today we just tested function the magazine is a pretty basic affair you've got a very large button right here that you push and it drops right down then you can see inside if you look here you'll notice the bolt and that's a rotating bulb that right as it's going to close right here it locks the round into the chamber quite positively uh and and you're ready to go now henry claims that this rifle gives you bolt action like accuracy out of a lever action design well we're gonna put that to the test but just looking at the head of that bolt and the way this mechanism works i suspect that it's going to be close a couple other things about this firearm it has an internal safety so it's not going to go off if you drop it however there is no cross bolt safety or anything of that nature so if you've got a round chambered you're in the cocked and ready to go position you need to carefully put your thumb on there and lower that it does not have a half [ __ ] type of scenario that would be one suggestion that i would make to henry would would be to put a half [ __ ] on that i don't like a cross bolt safety nor do i need one but i do like a half [ __ ] position but how i would carry this locked and loaded would be just like this and pull back on on that hammer when i'm ready to take aim at quarry so this is um got a typical set of henry buckhorn style rear sights with the front sight and you can also get a version of this that doesn't have any sights at all on it now i actually like the idea of something is this handy and non-bulky and it it's a lightweight design all the way around i like the idea of having something like this um that you do have the option for open set type of scope i would likely put on here would be a minimal type of scope in other words i'm not going to put a you know a 50 millimeter bell or something like that on there something that would work really well on on something like this if you're going to use it at close closer ranges heck put a red dot on it there's a lot of ways you can go but i just love the the classic style and the classic look of this without anything at all so as is the case with henry they just do such a good job with product development with their fit and finish it's made in america this one as well as many of their others are made just one state over from me over in wisconsin and right rice lake wisconsin which is about as middle america as you can get and have never had any issues with quality or anything coming out of that plant with the number of henrys that i've owned over the years this isn't the big video for this rifle the big video is going to be putting an optic on this and or getting it sighted in properly so i can show you the kind of accuracy that a 308 is capable of and i would i would expect with with an optic with something that at least six power is going to be capable of anywhere from a one to two inch group at 100 yards give or take a lot of that's going to depend on me one thing i will also say is the trigger is something that takes some getting used to it's it's a little bit what i would call spongy i don't know what the after market situation is i'm gonna see if there's some break-in involved but when i when i do these kind of reviews part of what i'm doing is providing a service to the company to say hey if it were me i'd change this or i'd change that and i also look for you guys in the comments section to give your thoughts on that as well because i do know for a fact that henry is listening they they do listen to their customers they also have some of the best customer service you're going to find so the henry long ranger this one's in 308 winchester uh depending on how things set up we may be able to take this out and see if we can't take a mule deer with it this year as well once again i want to thank you guys for your support and for watching i want to thank henry for providing this beautiful rifle and we look forward to telling you more about it more firearms industry news and more reviews like this
