happy day everybody good day to you all my name is christana i am the owner and creator of owner and creator of bella renavari by cursana this is my youtube channel so welcome here if you're not subscribed please hit the subscribe button i know it's like a commitment really when you hit the subscribe button you're like i'm committing to this person i promise i won't let you down if you're not new here welcome back friends and family i appreciate you guys every single day today we are going to be doing a repurposing of a twin size headboard this headboard was my son's but we are going to move him up into a new bed when we move he'll get probably a full size and or we're going to do bunk beds for him either way he's not going to be in the same situation we will be moving and so i wanted to do this because i want to keep this in our family but i want to repurpose it in a way that we can use it differently my idea is super big stay tuned if you guys want to see what i think i'm going to do wish me luck wish me luck all right so this is a headboard and footboard that was gifted to me a long time ago by one of my friends and she wanted me to do whatever i wanted with it and i didn't do anything with it for a really long time and then i decided to do this headboard for my son which is a metallic paint we were going to do the footboard but i didn't have a way to attach it and so i was like oh why did i start painting that so this is painted but we only used the headboard for a long time it is very tall so i'm going to walk you through what my vision is for this process okay so here's the headboard if you see me i'm standing next to it and i'm five foot three so it's fairly tall i'm gonna use this as i'm gonna create almost like a sideboard buffet that i can put my blankets in we love our blankets in my house we love love love them and right now we have an old buffet an old art deco buffet that we use as a tv stand and we use it to hold all of our blankets but i thought how awesome would it be to have this small kind of statement piece that also holds the blankets and then if we decide to change what we're putting our tv on or we hang it on the wall when we move it won't be that big of a deal so here's the piece my idea is to take the footboard i will not be cutting the footboard or the headboard and i'm going to build sides for this all right so we can visualize a little bit better because i'm gonna bring you out here to the side of this so here is what we're gonna do okay i'm going to pull this out decide what depth we want just like that headboard and footboard that we did last week i want to decide what the depth is that i want of this little buffet aka blanket holder because i am not going to be cutting this we're not going to have access through the front so i had to get creative because i don't want to cut this stuff so i'm going to build a side for this we're going to build a bottom because obviously if i throw blankets in there i need them to stop and not go to the floor so we're gonna build a base in here okay we'll probably use some construction lumber to make a skeleton before we actually put the final wood over it but my idea is we're going to do sides we'll do a frame kind of like we did with the bench and then what i will do is i'm going to finalize it with a top and we're going to be able to flip open that top and throw our blankets in there so we are going to be making a piece that will have a top that will open so if you decide later on that you want to turn a headboard and a footboard into a bench but you want that to be storage so you can open it this will be the same concept okay so basically what i'm doing is creating a bench out of this the same concept except it's not really a bench because you're not going to sit on it it's but we're going to do the frame and do all the things so that we can put stuff in it just like we did the last bench so if you guys did not see that video i'm going to pop it up right here but we're going to really turn this into something keep it in my family make it a statement piece it's gonna be awesome let's get started so what i'm gonna do here is i'm gonna set this on the ground so that we can work with it and before i build my frame i got these glued pine boards this is what we're going to use for the sides and the top i don't have a lot of access to longer pieces of oak so we're going to use this because it's going to be nice and then i won't have to worry about doing pocket holes or biscuit joiner or anything like that so i've already bought these these are pre-made it is a little bit more expensive than making them yourself but i live in germany and so i'm trying to be resourceful so what i'm going to do is i put this on the ground and the reason why i butted it up against this other piece of furniture is because i'm going to use this furniture to help me brace things so i can visualize and measure the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to set this pine board down so i can see the width because i need to know what the width of this is going to be that way i know how long to make my side brackets for my frame okay so the back of this frame does not have the indent like this one does you see how it comes in because we're gonna have to set our frame in that little indented spot that's right here and so this doesn't have that so we don't have to worry about when i measure my side bracket i'm going to measure from that indent at the bottom to the very top of this board and that is how long my side brackets are going to be for my frame also because this has a indent right here or it's it's recessed down i'm gonna do the frame a little bit different than i normally would instead of putting a board going completely horizontal across i'm going to build the frame all inside of this right here so we're going to make this board go in this way so that when we cut our board going horizontal we have to account for the space that this board is going to take up and remember i use construction lumber when i'm building my frames so this is kind of to help you visualize what i was talking about this is going to be the side piece i'm going to butt it up against here and because that that footboard that we're going to use for the front sorry hold on because we have that footboard that we're going to use for the front is flat we're not going to have to account for that part that's indented right there we're going to cut this board so that it is flush with the top of this board i'm going to measure it as well but that's another way that you can visualize so i need my side brackets for my frame to be this length right here and we're going to start them in here i'm going to build a frame down here also before you do your final measurement make sure you take the plastic off because that even that little millimeter of a difference can affect your measurements so that's roughly 16 and a half and i'm going to write that down we're gonna re-measure obviously we measure three times and it's it's on there pretty good so right where i measured and where i did this line they're still it's pretty accurate but you still want to do double measuring because you just you never know because you don't want to cut your lumber and then you're going to have to buy new lumber you cannot once you cut your lumber you cannot make it bigger i'm going to cut the side brackets they're going to be all the same length i'm going to cut the side brackets so that i have one for each side on the bottom and we're going to cut this with my miter saw and then we are going to measure out the horizontal brackets that will go on our frame i started cutting the construction lumber boards with my miter saw so that i could start building the frame the bottom frame for this buffet blanket holder once i'd cut the side brackets i measured the center so i knew how long i needed needed my back piece to be that goes to this frame so i am measuring the space in between the two boards so that way i know exactly how much i need to cut so what i did is i went and cut it and now i'm going to dry fit it so we're going to dry fit that horizontal piece to the side pieces and it fits perfectly so we're going to start assembling this i do want to say that i cut two boards to this size because we need to assemble one to the front as well what i'm going to do here is i'm going to create some recessed holes so that way i can screw them into each other so i'm going to put these at the end of the side pieces for the frame and i'm going to use wood glue i like the type on wood glue and i'm going to apply the wood glue to the end of the board and that way we can glue and screw so this is the back piece on the floor and now i'm putting the side piece up to it and i'm going to screw that into there [Music] [Music] [Music] once i have the first side piece assembled to the back part of the frame i'm going to assemble the second side piece once i have everything assembled i'm going to put my frame back on the bottom of the headboard to make sure that it still fits really nice i'm going to take my kreg jig drill bit and i'm going to create some countersunk holes so that way i can glue and screw this part into the back of this frame [Music] i'm going to add the last board to this frame and this is the one that goes in between in the front i'm going to glue and screw this piece into it and this will complete my frame and allow me to start working on attaching the footboard to the front when you're working by yourself you have to get a little creative sometimes and so i brought my the headboard with the frame attached to it inside where i knew that the floor was level and i used a box and i'm using pieces of wood to get it level before i attach the footboard to this so i'm using my level to get it perfect before i butt up that footboard to that frame and screw it in so i'm using a board right here but what i ended up doing is i used the box and then i'm going to go take some plywood and that is what gave me a level playing field for this and so i'm going to be able to attach my foot board and i have a box to stabilize my frame so i can do all of this by myself because i am not an octopus and i don't have eight legs arms legs [Music] [Music] now that it is level i am going to go ahead and bring the footboard in and butt it up against that area so i'm going to just double check make sure that it's still level before i screw it in i did create a few countersunk holes with my drill bit in the front and now i'm taking my three inch construction grade wood screws and i'm going to use those to screw the footboard to the frame because i need this to be as strong as possible and so that's why i am using these three inch construction screws [Music] now i need to build the platform that goes on top of the frame because remember if we're throwing the blankets into here we need them to stop so i'm taking one by fours and i'm going to just put those across going horizontal i know i'm gonna put five on here and it there is a little bit of a space but i don't really care about that it's gonna be the inside as long as it's going to stop my blankets i'm okay with there being a little bit of space now if this was something that i wanted everything to be super tight and the platform to be super tight then i would probably cut a piece of board with my table saw and make sure that it was super tight but this is good enough so i measured out the length i cut these one by fours and now i'm going to screw each end into this frame the boards are flush with each other so that way when i put the sides on they will butt right up against where that frame is and they're not going to stick out because that platform is flush with everything [Music] the next thing i'm going to do is measure the side so i'm going to actually take the [Music] measurement from the footboard and that is how long i am going to make these sides because i want everything to i want it all to look nice and cohesive if i made the sides too long you'd be able to see those side skirts underneath where the front of the footboard is and so i want everything to be level in the same width as each other so i'm using my construction t-square after i measured and i'm making straight lines and i'm going to cut this with my miter saw and you're going to see why i like this miter saw because it has the telescopic capabilities and so i can use this board i can put it on there cut it and i can pretty much cut almost the whole thing and then i can flip it and i can finish cutting it you could do this you could use a table saw you could use a circular saw if you want i just didn't want to pull everything out i already have enough tools out and i have a really small work area and so i've done this plenty of times what you're going to do is you're going to flip this board around and you're going to take your blade you're not going to pull the trigger you're just going to take your blade pull it down straight down and you're going to match it up against where the line is put your blade down to where it goes down push the blade back and then just go straight down and that will cut your board for you i'm going to pull my sideboard up so it's even with the footboard the top of the footboard and then i'm going to mark a line so that i know where i need to put it back because what i'm going to do is i am going to make pocket holes in this piece of wood and i'm going to attach these side skirts with my kreg jig pocket holes okay so i bit the bullet and i invested in a kreg jig 720 pro this is a material thickness gauge and so what you're going to do is you're going to put your board up against that and you're going to see what it comes out so it came at half an inch and now my drill bit they have little circles this is this is new to me this was not on the old kreg jig and it has a half an inch so you are going to put the stopping collar on there so you're going to take that little thickness indicator and you're going to turn it to the left to loosen that little bolt and there is a a circle so you can see where you're putting it so you can see that it's half inch and then you're going to tighten it back up and this is going to stop the drill bit so that it doesn't go too far into your wood for the thickness of your wood so now i have it going up i'm going to put pocket holes in all these areas that you see me touching and here is the clamp this is really cool this is my favorite part this is going to automatically when you clamp it go to the thickness of your board and so you're going to push down to clamp it and then i'm going to take my drill bit and i'm going to put it into my drill and it's super super easy wherever you want your holes you can line up there's three holes in this kreg jig so you can pick which one you want to put it in but you're going to line you're going to clamp it down and then you just drill into it and then pull back and now you have a pocket hole it's super easy guys this is if you're going to be doing a lot of woodworking i really like this craig jig a lot and follow the directions because it comes with a clamp where you can clamp it to your workspace as well which is super that is super super helpful with a kreg jig this is so easy it just clamps in you set the gauge to the thickness of whatever wood you're cutting just like i told you and boom here are all the pocket holes that i am making [Music] once you have made all your pocket holes it is time to assemble the side so my helper my little helper and i are going to assemble it so i'm going to glue that frame and that way we can glue and screw it and i'm going to line up that line that i drew on there before remember we drew that line and it had the arrows that set up we're also going to make sure that is level and lined up with the front and my little helper is going to help me hold it and i am going to screw these wood screws into the frame i'm going to put the craig screws in there as well and i will show you that in a second now i am inserting all of my krig jig pocket hole screws and these are going to go into the headboard and the footboard and this is going to just make this piece even more sturdy [Music] i need to create a brace or frame for the top to hold our lid and so i'm going to measure across this piece and i'm going to cut a 1 by 4 and that is going to go to the back of the piece and that's going to help hold our the back of our lid up so i'm going to take a scrap piece of wood and i'm going to put that on the back and i'm going to wait for it to be flush to the front and the back and wait for it to be level and then i'm going to screw that back that brace piece into the back of the headboard and you're going to see why i need to do this in a second [Music] [Music] so because the lid is going to go over and sit on the top of that foot board in the front that is going to act as a frame so the sides that we put in in that front on the foot board that's going to be a frame and then this back part is going to finish off the frame so we're basically using the sides and the board as a frame and now i just need to add the back of the frame and then once we're done i need to cut a 1 by 4 that will go along that will go horizontal and i'm going to make sure that i have even space on both sides it is going to overlap those sides just a little bit i'm going to make sure that the the distance that it overlaps is the same on both and then i'm going to cut that one by four and we are going to etch out area so we're going to use the speed square that someone had suggested last time and i'm going to push that speed square to the back and then i'm going to pull it to my wood because that's going to tell me how deep that is and how much i need to cut off and then i'm also going to take the speed square and i'm going to just butt it right up against that back part and that's going to tell me exactly where it needs to be cut as well so now i know how deep it needs to be cut and now i know at what area it needs to be cut and i'm going to cut that out and that is going to help it butt right up against that back part i'm going to use my jigsaw to notch that out cut that out just go carefully and so that way you don't over cut it and this will help cut out that part of the wood and we can fit it and make sure that it fits nice so i'm going to be putting a hinge on this and that's why i need a 1 by 4 to the back and then we're going to use that glued pine board and we are going to attach those two together with this hinge so you can see right here it is perfect now when we used our speed square it was a little bit faster so thank you for the the recommendation of using that and now we are going to attach our lid to this but obviously our lid does not fit so we are going to have to notch out those areas on the glued pine board lid as well so we are looking to see okay we're going to butt that right there we know that that's where it needs to be cut because i have put it right up against that little area that's popping out once i make the mark on the side i'm going to continue that line to the top so that i can see it when i cut it and now i'm going to take it over to the side i'm going to do the same exact thing so that i can i know how thick i need to cut it so this will help me know what the thickness is of that little ornate piece that pops up so i'm going to mark this and then i will end up cutting these notches out with my jigsaw as well we are going to be putting what is called a piano hinge on these boards to connect them i'm going to add the piano hinge and so i want to make sure that i know exactly where it's going to go so i fold it into there and i'm going to clamp this on there so that it just holds steady in place and then i'm going to screw the first little flap of the piano hinge to that 1x4 and then we're gonna connect it to the other part of the lid once you've screwed the first part down to the 1x4 you're going to add this to the front part of the lid so we're going to make sure that they are together and i'm going to clamp each side together because what you're going to do what i did before is i tested to make sure that i had it the right way so that way when it's sitting down the door will actually open the lid will actually open so i am clamping these together and i'm going to screw the other part of the hinge to the bigger part of the lid and this is what's going to allow us to open and close our lid [Music] once you have attached it you want to put it in there and do a dry fit make sure that it opens and closes perfectly and then i took my pneumatic nail gun and i nailed that back one by four in place so that way everything would stay in place and it would be permanently affixed and it would open and close and look nice and i'm going to stain the top so i didn't want to screw it in there so i'm just going to use a lot of nails in here i know it doesn't look super pretty right now but can you believe that this is now a buffet slash blanket holder that went from a headboard and a footboard to something super functional that i repurposed so let's make it pretty i'm going to fill all the screw holes that i had in the front and on the sides with a two-part wood filler i really like this because it dries super hard and fast so that way i don't have to wait for a wood filler to dry so that i can sand and start painting so two-part wood filler has a hardener that you want to put into the filler that you pull out of the can and i always fold it into each other and then you have about 10 minutes to work with it before it starts drying so you want to work fairly quick and don't over mix so you can always add a little bit more but if you over mix it it's going to dry and you're going to waste it so i'm going to push that wood filler into the holes and then i'm going to spread it on almost like i'm icing a cake [Music] i'm going to wait about an hour and after that i'm going to go in and just sand all of the wood that i have added to this piece because i want to smooth it out so i'm going to use a 220 grit and i'm going to start sanding it and then i go up to a 320 grit so that it is super super smooth and finished and i can round off any of the edges and any kind of splitting wood and then i'm going to sand all of these areas where i did the two-part wood filler as well once i'm done sanding i dusted it all off with my dusting brush and now i'm going to clean the entire piece with dixie bell's white lightning this is a tsp based cleaner and i put it in a spray bottle so i'm going to spray this all on here and clean it and then once it's dry i'm going to go over it with clean water and a clean rag to get any residue off i said i did it on the entire piece i only did it on the headboard and footboard there's no need to clean raw wood i really wanted to add something special to this so i'm going to be using would you bend moldings and what you need is you need a heat gun or you can use a hair dryer and once you heat it up it becomes flexible once it cools it is really it's not flexible anymore it hardens back up so i'm going to heat it up so that way i can butt it up against the area that i want to use it in so i can make sure that it's going to fit and i can put it down flat you want to do this first and fit it and make sure that it's flat to your piece so i'm going to cut this with a razor and then i'm going to go in with my type on wood glue and i'm going to add my wood glue onto here and i'm going to put it up against the area so i'm doing this right along the bottom so almost like a border and once i have my wood glue i'm going to spread that wood glue on there and then i'm going to stick the piece on there and i'm going to heat it up with my wood or my heat it up with my heat gun and then i'm going to tape it in place [Music] [Music] i let everything dry for about an hour and then i pull all the tape off and then it is ready to paint so i'm going to use dixie bell's evergreen and i'm going to paint this entire piece with two coats of evergreen before we go in with our blending so the blending we're going to be doing today is sort of like a cloudy blend it's not going to be super perfect because i want this piece to have black wax and be just a little bit moody we are also going to use the fact that we have this blue base underneath so we're going to distress it and allow that blue to show through and then i'm also going to take some cobalt and i'm going to do kind of like a wash in some of the areas and that way we can create some accent areas so that we have a couple colors so now we're going to blend and what i'm going to do is i'm going to mist the surface first now that we have two coats of dried evergreen i'm going to take palmetto which is a darker green and i'm going to outline all of the areas so i'm going to outline the side and then you see the indented area so i'm using this as a shaded effect on the outside of most of these areas so you're going to see me add this palmetto in here all over the side of this piece first [Music] [Music] do [Music] once you've placed the palmetto you're going to miss the surface and you are going to add some evergreen on it right next to the palmetto and you're going to do almost a blending with it already you're going to start doing circles and you're going to go vertical and horizontal because you're going to attempt to blend these colors together while you are adding that evergreen this is just to add wet paint to that transition line so that you can start blending these colors together so right now i am just dipping my brush in adding a little bit of paint at a time and i'm going to mist the surface when i feel like it is kind of drying up in my paint or my brush is sticking and so i'm using this and i'm going across and i'm going to go vertical and diagonal and in circles and i am attempting to blend the palmetto and the evergreen together right now [Music] [Music] okay so i'm going to switch over to palmetto i'm going to miss the surface and i'm going to add the palmetto where i previously had it and i'm going to kind of just feather it into that wet evergreen paint that we have on there now and this is going to allow me to blend these colors in even more [Music] once i'm done with the palmetto i am going to switch back over to my evergreen brush but i am not going to add any more paint on it i am just going to take that brush and i am going to attempt to blend this one more time so i'm going to go vertical horizontal diagonal and i'm just going to allow the pre-existing paint that's on that brush to help blend these colors into each other [Music] now i'm going to add the lighter color which is a highlight and it's mint julep and i'm going to add this to the center of each section but i'm only going to work in sections because the white or the lighter colors this isn't white this is a this is a green like a light light green if you add the white over to the other area and you let it dry it's a lot harder to blend it in so only work in sections when you're doing the lighter colors so i'm going to mist the area and i'm going to add just a little bit of that mint julep on there and i'm going to just kind of do it in the center so that it's added as a highlight i'm going to start with a circle so that way i'm almost blending it into that wet evergreen i'm going to take my clean dry neutral brush and i am going to spray it and start doing circles and horizontal because i want to try to blend that lighter color into the colors that are on already on there so you may need to have you may need to clean your brush off a few times because that lighter color will take over so clean your brush off and then blend it again and this will help you just feather everything together so that you have that highlight you have that shading and then you have that evergreen in there and i'm going to continue to do this on the entire piece but in those sections below as well so [Music] [Music] once i was done blending i distressed it i took my three 3x4 electric gray and this is a fine 10 millimeter pad and i'm going to sand it to distress it and just to smooth out my entire finish someone asked me why i distress everything i we are a military family and i've said this before that we move often and if we're moving across the ocean if it's distressed i won't be as upset if it gets messed up i'm taking cobalt which is a bright blue and i am adding it to the corners and to the little edges and i'm doing kind of like a dry brush on this you don't want to add too much paint and this is just going to add accent colors to it and then what you're going to do is you're going to wipe it back you're going to spray it with some water and you're going to wipe it back with a microfiber cloth and this is just going to add another layer of dimension to your piece [Music] [Music] do [Music] i'm going to add easy peasy spray wax which is a clear wax to this entire piece so i'm going to spray the entire piece and then i'm going to rub it in with a microfiber cloth this is going to seal my entire piece but what this is going to do because i am going to be using black wax is it's not going to allow that black wax to soak into the paint as much and i'll be able to wipe it back more so now i'm taking best dang wax in black and i'm going to apply it to the entire piece but i'm going to make it thicker in the areas where i put the blue and that way we can add even more of a shading effect but i'm going to apply it and then i'm going to wipe it back with a microfiber cloth and it's just going to deepen the colors and it's just going to add some cool shading effects to it [Music] the top is going to get stained with voodoo gel stain and tobacco road it's a water-based stain and i'm going to add it to the surface and then i'm going to take a application pad and i'm going to go with the grain and i'm just going to apply this on here i'm going to allow it to dry thoroughly for a few hours and then i'm going to seal it in with dixie bells gator hide which is also a water-based sealer i will go back later and probably stain the inside of this piece but right now i'm just going to stain the top and that way we can finish the video up and do all the things with it and i can get it out to you guys so i'm going to stain the top and then again i'm going to seal it with dixie belts gator hide i'm going to use their blue sponge to seal it as well when i stain the top with the blue sponge and gator hide i always go with the grain so that is what i'm going to do i'm going to make sure that the sponge is flat to the surface and i am going to just pull it down in one direction if you're going to go up and down make sure that you just don't go in the opposite direction so if you're going to go horizontal make sure you stay horizontal if you go vertical make sure you stay vertical so if you start horizontal don't start pulling this going vertically stay with the grain when you're doing this [Music] i'm gonna tie this all in together with gold gilding wax wait till you see what is about to happen this looks super awesome but when i pan over to the next screen which is the bottom part oh my gosh i just it's amazing it is super amazing and my daughter roxanne said mom once you put that gold on there it's gonna just make it even more sassy [Music] all right everybody this piece is done i hope you like it remember it used to be a headboard and footboard so this piece is done this video is done thank you guys so much for watching i will have another video up this week of some colorful i mean obviously so if you are not subscribed make sure that you subscribe hit the bell so you get all the latest videos and then also everything i use is in the description below you can just click on those links and i'll take you where it needs where you need to go if you want to recreate this look thank you guys so much for watching and i will see you later bye [Music] [Music] we could get out of town see the beautiful world around wanna see it now pack our bags and get in that car leave a little note and we'll drive real far let's get out we can leave this city let's drive to the open air yeah the countryside is so pretty with the wind blowing in your hair we can look back someday baby don't you understand that we only get [Music] [Music] driving in the middle of the night when the stars are bright [Music] pack our bags and get in that car leave a little [Music] yeah the countryside is so pretty [Music] make it count honey come on [Music] let's get out we can leave this city let's drive to the open air yeah the countryside is so pretty with the wind blowing in your hair we can look back someday baby don't you understand that we only get one [Music]
