classic car trader Charlie Lyons had only just gone to view at 1970 Chevelle but then the seller mentioned a certain wing car gathering dust in a barn and if the seller was telling the truth this dusty vehicle might just be extraordinarily rare so rare in fact that only 503 were ever made the town of Glenwood in Crenshaw County Alabama might sound like the middle of nowhere indeed according to the 2010 census it's home to just 187 people might as every treasure honor knows the middle of nowhere is exactly where treasure always turns up that is if you happen to be in the right place at the right time in this case it was 2015 and Charlie Lyons was driving toward Glenwood to check out the affirmation barn as he cruised through rural Alabama did he wonder if he'd struck gold was he just this once going to be the right place at the right time and did he press down on the accelerator just a little harder than usual thinking of what lay ahead Lyons himself hails from Irvington Alabama it's a sleepy farming community not quite large enough to have its own municipality it's not quite the blissful middle of nowhere either fans of stock car racing may know it is the home of the mobile International Speedway and of course Irvington is also home to Lyons family business Charley's classic cars its website states were a Christian family that's been buying selling and trading classic cars and parts for more than 25 years we hunt the country over for the infamous barn finds and with the grace of God sometimes we find the holy grail of them all of which begs the question when his drive to Glenwood really deliver the holy grail of barn finds Lyons told a story to Hot Rod Network after knocking on the door of the man's house he agreed to show it to me he said it was an unmolested car sitting in a shed with two owners and 20,000 miles on the car was a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona one of only 388 known to be in existence racing fans may know the model for its short-lived career in NASCAR racing children of the 80s however will recognize it as the stunt car used to play the General Lee in the Dukes of Hazzard of course it was a barn find its weathered with surface rust Lyons told Hot Rod Network at one point in his life he led his pet sleep in the driver's seat so it's a little tore up but it's all complete all numbers-matching even down to the hose clamps on the radiator hoses in fact the car was a virtual rack but it was worth gold on the collectors market there was a problem though he couldn't sell it and he told me the cars never been for sale Lyons told the Hot Rod Network at that time I told him if he was ever interested in selling it at all I'd be interested in buying it and he left it at that the weeks went by and Lyons dropped the Daytona's owner a text message now and again just to keep his name in the Hat why was the anonymous owner so reluctant to sell the Daytona after all it was just rotting in his barn and by his own admission he'd probably never get around to fixing it according the Lyons the owner had bought it for $1,800 in 1974 from the event town judge who had given it to his wife his reluctance to sell might have something to do with the cars maiden voyage a spring break trip to Panama City in Florida the then 18-year old owner commemorated the occasion by having flames painted on the car's front fenders whatever happened in Panama City there must have been a lot of memories attached to that Daytona months went by and Lyons kept texting the owner then out of the blue he texted me one day Lyons told hotrod Network he told me if he was going to advertise it for sale he would ask a certain amount of money and if I wanted it I could have it for that price I immediately told him I take it Lyons went on last Saturday we went up there and spent the day airing out the tires freeing up the brakes and pulling it out of the barn we know that relatively few Daytona's were built with bucket seats automatic transmission and a console and the is one of them moreover the Daytona though far from roadworthy still in its original 440 Magnum engine now to give an indication of what a Daytona might be worth at auction actor David Spade recently paid nine hundred thousand dollars for a Hemi powered 1969 charger naturally then Lions listed his Daytona in the same auction house this car is a 1969 Charger Daytona showing telltale signs of decades of storage and mild paint changes stated it's listing on the beckham auctions website what makes this Daytona especially appealing are its interior options which include headrest equipped bucket seats factory chrome floor shifter in a center console dash cluster with clock and tach assembly and more with an estimated value of 150 to $180,000 the vehicle went on auction in Florida according to Yahoo News any prospective buyer would face an immediate dilemma of spending lots of money for a delicate cleaning or even more money to restore it to showroom standards in fact the car sold for ninety thousand dollars and while that figure may have been lower than the estimate it was still 50 times with the previous owner had paid in 1974 a candy trade for a wrecked car some might say what's more with any luck this iconic and exciting automobile will be on the road again one day soon meanwhile Lyons is still running his family business in Irvington buying selling and restoring classic cars and though the Daytona may be hard to top Lyons and his sons Cody and Marcus are still searching Alabama for Holy Grail barn finds finally dreamers should remember this according to wikipedia as many as 325 Dodge Chargers were used in the making of the Dukes of Hazzard and tantalizingly only 17 of them survived in various states of repair so it's just possible that out there somewhere in the middle of nowhere there's one that has your name on it you
