Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
One thing though, the heart condition he had has a life expectancy of below 30 years iirc. The main treatment is to limit any kind of physical exertion
Oh yeah - always gotta mention one of my favorite stats:
During Pistol's last season in '79-80, he was super injured (completely destroyed knee), a shell of himself, barely playing, but it was also the NBA's first season with the 3-point line. Pistol went 10-for-15 from deep (career stats). A busted 32-year-old hit 2/3 of his 3-point shots in a league that was barely topping 20%.
His LSU squads finished 14-12, 13-13, & 22-10 in his 3 varsity seasons with no tournaments. Probably helped to have his father as coach giving him the ultimate green light. Granted the tourney had fewer bids than today but Pistol simply couldn't win much in college or the pros. He never beat Kentucky & was 1-5 vs Tennessee in SEC play, two of the best conference programs back then. His ballhandling & shooting were amazing however. Would have averaged so much more with the 3pt line then. He was picked by the ABA's Carolina Cougars in their '70 draft, where he could have used that 3pt shot.
It would have been interesting to see if you dropped him on a team with another superstar. I'll admit I watch a Maravich highlight video and I was like how the F did he do that.
Iโve always wondered why people call Pete the greatest passer ever. His career high assists per game was 6.9. He had a career losing record, he never won anything. He didnโt play with the greatest players, but he didnโt elevate them either. Youโd think a great passer, who was also a tremendous scorer, could elevate his team. Pete literally only played for two seasons in which his team had a winning record, and one of those was his last season being a backup on the 1980 Celtics.
Sure Pete was flashy, and he wouldโve scored even more points if heโd had the 3 point line. But how great was he truly? It feels to me like maybe he was one of the kings of putting up gaudy numbers on bad teams.
14 got me to do an out loud โoohโ
I have his book in my basketball library, will have to read it this summer.
