people say singapore was obsessed by food would you agree well yes so tonight we're going to go exploring for food yep one of the staples of singapore we're heading to the maxwell road yeah which is one of the best nigerian oh no good gap in 1968 the government started a program to move street hawkers into purpose-built centers maxwell road was the last one to open under this program in 1987 [Music] this center is known as having the best chicken rice dish in all of singapore this is it maxwell roadhog center step one on the table what's the thing you need to order a table number so you'll bring it to your table walk around find what you're interested in and order whatever you want you're leaving the table you throw down your tissues if you're on your own look at the tissues that means it's yours but because there's two of us we can take turns how much were the drinks drinks are cheap prawn and chicken this one i gotta wait for hard drop when thank you order prawn and chicken yogurt it must be shrimp it's nice they're yummy they're like spring rolls totally fried singaporean should be good very crunchy fried the chicken and very small shrimp decided very good walker centers are where singapore comes to me this is where you get the real good food and yeah really cheap tainanese chicken fries it could be a singapore delicacy that i love and that's all for medium sized serving so that's four dollars yeah that'll make me nice and sleepy [Music] thank you auntie this is like a vegetarian i think the first very thing never tried first time and there's no meat in it but you don't miss it oh okay she said do you want it spicy i said yeah spicy it's spicy yeah it's a vegetarian it's not vegan it's got an omelette in it the tasty alternative dishes [Music] honestly no disrespect i've eaten some fine dining establishments since i've been here if you want the real food in singapore get yourself to a hawker stall that's my message tonight [Music] our tour continues to the chinatown complex this hawker center although not the oldest is singapore's largest with 226 cooked food stalls [Music] now [Music] one big ass bottle of tiger [Music] i think it's got that blob of pineapple in the middle sauce again that's it exactly what we've been looking for real singapore satay it's like stupid good we went to a restaurant yesterday that was saturday thirty dollars for three sticks of chicken they weren't very good and this was six bucks for ten it's much better thank you satay's are the best beautiful thank you [Applause] pot stickers so done in their cast iron pan with oil on the bottom and a bit of water to steam them what was the cost they're yummy prawn and just delicious gooey and delicious what are you getting raw jack this is rojak traditionally singaporean dish it means eclectic mix so it's sweet and savory fruit and vegetables dumplings in a sticky black sauce covered in peanuts that was pineapple so it's a lucky dip yeah so taste the pineapple and then the sauce and then the crunch of the butter and it works do you think that was fruit or vegetable that might be dumpling surprise again really tasty i won't tell a lie it's kind of strange and the next thing you eat could be pineapple or it could be bean curd but nothing surprise bad i think it's fine i played a rojack like this was four dollars and that was a small size of four sizes hawker centers are an integral part of daily life for singaporeans where families and friends gather to dine as a community making the kitchen one of the least utilized rooms in a singapore home as gordon says if you want to taste the best food available in singapore get yourself to a hawker center you will not be disappointed [Music] so [Music] what the poor people are doing [Laughter] and today minutes with the elementary room forecast to be generally fine with some idea antibiotics from time to time as always we do like you to have yourself out faster whenever you are seated and especially so shouldn't you buy something turn on i'm trying to knock it on arrival time myself
