[Music] I stood on the edge of a cliff my heart pounding as I looked out over the vast blue Atlantic Ocean this wasn't just a vacation spot Meda was a revelation when I first told my friends I was going to Meda they looked at me all puzzled like and said isn't it an Ow like a tiny little island just for old people little did they know I was about to uncover the real Meda [Music] [Music] [Music] I'm about to bust nine common misconceptions about the beautiful island of Meda from its climate to its culture join me on a journey that reveals the true essence of this European gem let's dive in but before we do that I made this cool little advert let me know what you think oh addict.com you know many people have actually expressed surprise at the fact that they didn't know about our services that we've built up over the years so here's the deal we're now a fully fledged relocation support team we've built our own real estate agency focusing on you the buyer but that's not all we offer daily scouting tours where we drive you around and show you the area with a view to living there we can find you long-term rentals and we can sell you a house as I just mentioned and we've bought all these services is together into and I'm really excited about this stuff is the ultimate scouting trip we're calling it our relocation Retreat now our biggest strength though is sewing all these Services together um with our team of professional lawyers accountants financial advisors and our helpful support crew we've helped hundreds hundreds of experts relocating to Portugal so get in touch through alav addict.com and we'll be able to help you and now you know what we've built over the last couple of here while Lisbon to Meda is only 1 hour and 45 minutes flight time Madera is not actually a single Island actually it's an archipelago and then this includes the main island of Madera Port santu which is just a little bit to the Northeast and the uninhabited deseras islands just very close to Meda as well to the southeast and the svang islands which are way further Southeast almost um towards halfway towards the Canary Islands so there you have it it's an archipelago and it actually covers a lot of sea area hence massive fishing rights for Portugal while Meda enjoys a mild subtropical climate temperatures can vary and it's not always hot and I know when I went there in springtime was actually sort of May it was 22° but that 22° actually feels a lot warmer in Meda and then the variance between 22° down in F right up high in the mountains where it's about 12 to 14° is massive on the same day and it's hugely variable around lots of little micr climates can be raining on the northeastern side and sunny in the South and just go around a band and it's pouring with rain it's bizarre but it's cool it's nice and refreshing you definitely get four seasons in a day and it's true the mandaran wine is sweet but the common misconception is that it's all sweet it's not there's some dry and medium dry varieties available and also a comment to ition with mad and wine because it actually lasts so long in the bottle up to centuries and more it's common very common to buy your son or daughter a bottle um from their from their date of birth so it'll last with them as they grow older and we' bought our daughter one from 2007 the average tourist who goes to Meda is changing rapidly and much younger people arriving because it's become known as a really outdoor destination um traditionally back in the old days it was the older British folk used to come in Holiday here and you know sip their gin and tonics reads pis now everyone's running around mountain bikes up the hills and Mountain hiking sunrise and it's just and there's lots of water sports there's vibrant nightlife in funa so yeah things have changed a [Music] lot the fifth misconception is that Meda is difficult to get to it's not there meda's got an international port in funchal with regular flights from many European cities she look at this there's like even three um three destinations in the United States there's from kakas and Venezuela all the way up to Helsinki everywhere so it's pretty easy to get to Manda and if you really get stuck you can always fly to Lisbon and then Lisbon direct to FAL and as I said it's only 1 hour and 45 minutes so there's about 42 flights a day on average so it's becoming very very busy now this one's kind of true Meda is not really known for sandy beaches but it does have lots of Rocky beaches really really great warm water in the ocean and Port santu has got this fantastic big wide open beach and all the madans go crazy for Port Santos they go there every single year to go and revel in the beach but the rest of the time we got rock pools um and they're called Le and they're all over the place and some of them are awesome we went went up to portm in the northern area of um on the North Coast of Meda and just next to the hotel where we were staying was a beautiful title pool called doaa vak there's no local culture what who said that that's nuts Meda has a rich cultural heritage including traditional music dance and festivals I mean check this out there's the Meda Carnival the Meda flower festival the Atlantic Festival the Meda Wine Festival the Columbus Festival Meda nature festival and then there's Christmas and New Year festivities and a bunch of other little smaller festivals throughout the year and there's history like you wouldn't believe back in 1419 Meda was officially discovered by Portuguese explorers and the credit for the discovery goes toon zaru and TR and another guy called Perell B Perell was also involved at later stage and his daughter actually went on to marry Christopher Columbus so how's that it's just a summer destination madera's mild climate makes it a great all year round destination on the coast daytime temperatures hover around 20 to 21 de C or 68 to 70° fah which is actually much warmer than it sounds um and this happens from December through to April and they reach 25 to 26° cenr from July to October which is 77 to is 79° f it rarely gets cold however from January to March there can be cool days with highs around 15° Centigrade or 59° fah so there you have it the food is Bland man where do they get this stuff Madan Cuisine is diverse and flavorful with dishes like esada which is beef skews and I'm just my mouth is salivating at the thought we went to come out the LA Bush and went to this resta called aides and look at these things amazing you can get balok Kaku as well which is garlic bread specific Medan garlic bread and fresh fresh fresh seafood not to mention tons of fruit and the bananas oh the bananas taste like cheesecake especially this one banana called banana prata which is a silver banana so check those out amazing can't wait to go back oops and how can I forget the drinks pona is a classic everyone you see them everywhere as you can see I've spent a lot of time filming Meda I went around all over the island I went first day I went all the way around the western side of the island and droned everywhere and in the East I went the second day hiir a car and drove all around and and got amazing footage and I went for a hike with Stay classy with ywn from Stay classy which was awesome that was really amazing um we went out for dinner quite a few times we we I spent a lot of time in f as well filming all around there so I really did a lot of intense in work in Meda and I hope to share that with you in the coming week so let me know if you love Meda and if you want to see more I'd love to hear it so stay tuned I'll see you see you next week HOV addict.com [Music]
