if there is one rare treasure of Hawaii it must be oo but why is it considered rare in 1893 America illegally overthrew the Hawaiian government and imposed laws aimed at eradicating the Hawaiian language to put that in a perspective Michael Jackson's Thriller was on the airwaves before Hawaiian children could legally learn their native language in school however despite this tumultuous history we're witnessing a resg of Hawaiian culture so to learn about Olo and this recent Renaissance of culture we're going to meet up with my good friend and native speaker kamak Diaz [Laughter] yeah cut we're good yeah that's a r thir all right this is where it all started not this exact classroom but you know oilo back on the big island you know my Foundation came from my my dad and my mom sticky y just growing up but our first classroom experience was in a place just like this well where should we where should we start well before you learn anything I think you got to learn how to pronounce things uh-huh and we got a good pronunciation chart right over there ha la ma na PA VA that sounds good to me I think I can teach you do you know what that is no well are playing Proverbs something like cool you need okay okay so what was it you can write it down which means that not all the knowledge is gained in one school you know there's many many different ways to learn there's many different places to learn and there's many different people you can learn from and then whole my conf okay okay now in your own there we we go to the next level yeah I'll take it sorry amus all right Aus okay well because that all knowledge is learned or taught in one school I think we can go to the next chapter of my Hawaii Foundation Outdoors now we're talking this is sick yeah all right well welcome to Goa AA here at kapalai surrounded by the ca FCO mountain range this is insane it's one of my favorite places here on aahu and the reason why I wanted to bring you here was because the next proverb has to do with the land repeat that kak oh perfect n yeah right there really yeah okay so what does that mean land is Chief man is its servant some people jump in Ethan jump in the E he just right the bottom this prover how does that relate to you in your life well I feel like you know from an early age and even in my Hawaii Emer school we always had part of our you know education in the AA taking care of the Mala the like the tarot patch and the the animals and all of that so without that aspect of Hawaiian I think you're you almost feel empty and I think when people are so separated from the language or the land then you don't really know who you are so luckily I have the the language but I never really grew up in the like doing this stuff and I still I still don't come here very often you know so every time I have some time or I'm able to come here it's it's like reintegrating into my culture and reconnecting to my literal ancestry but this Ro reversal got the white guy working for me being in the mud getting dirty and feeling the C as you pull it out there's some Mana to it you know there's power there's it's something bigger than ourselves and it you can't explain it but ancestor you know it's definitely my kind of classroom there's a lot more ways to learn than this one classroom all right well I think there's one more thing I have to teach you what's that you just got [Music] aak and Han what is that well I'll show you let's go which means look with your eyes listen with your ears shut your mouth and do it your head straight action boy let's go let's do it looks fun [Music] okay got [Music] you good [Applause] [Music] Bo come this okay in the back in the back [Music] [Music] yeah hey look at your eyes I don't know if you know what this whole video is about right now what is it about looking with your eyes and you was not looking B stay out of my way [Music] home about to shut my mouth and Han on my way into the W Bay right now with kamaka Diaz [Music] that right there there that one way about you went on so I ask everybody this from Hawaii with koha what is something that you'd like to pay for that you feel like home is given to you and youd like to give to others I mean it's going to sound clich but Aloha you know we talk about the Aloha spirit all the time but I believe believe it's real I believe that it's special deer I mean you go places around the world and some people call it Southern Hospitality it's the beautiful thing about Aloha here is that when it's reciprocated that like circle of Aloha is complete cuz I always believe like you know you got you can do something and you don't have to expect anything in repair you hold the door open I sit take that's a it's like completing that Circle of Aloha I I do feel the Aloha here is special show and that's why we are the AL St and that's why the AL spirit is a real big yeah thanks for teaching me Al glad I'm fluent now
