hello folks I'm just popping out in the car in a sec and I thought I'd do another one of these sort of offthe cuff videos while I'm doing it first thing to do is to unplug it CU I've been charging overnight and uh that's going to be the subject of today's video living without a home charger keep watching so you might think how can I make a video about living without a home charger when I've got one well I really going to talk you through my thought process on things and look at some of the alternatives you know if you can't have a home charger um and people that can't have an home charger are in the vast majority in the UK not everyone's got a private driveway um some people are in leasehold properties flats and things where you're literally not allowed to install uh your own home charger uh you might not have dedicated parking space where you can do it there are all kinds of reasons why lots of people currently can't have a home charger um now now one of the things people often ask is how much does it cost to get a home charger installed obviously it's going to vary depending on um your particular property the state of your current electrical system what else needs to go in it but as a general rule you can get one installed from about 700 quid to about a grand most people can and a lot of it will depend on the particular charger unit you go for uh the one I've got is called an easy one um I actually got mine for free or almost for free from a company called Bumblebee EV who sponsored some of my car review videos um basically there's been a a buyout so Arnold Clark now owns bumblebee EV and they're no longer sponsoring my content but they either gave me it for free or nearly for free I can't quite remember and they gave me the super long charging cable as well um they were brilliant the installer they used was absolutely brilliant I did a separate video on that a while ago which I'll put a link to up there now if you haven't got a home charger and you can't have one put in there are some Alternatives coming out but they are coming slowly um one of the things is a company I'll put the name of them up on the screen so I can't remember the name but they basically drill like a little Gully in your pavement and put sort of a conduit in um which has got a top but like a bit of trunk in basically and uh it means you can run your charging cable through the pavement without leaving any kind of trip Hazard um obviously there are also people that that haven't got a drive that will still have um a car charger installed on the front of the house they do run the cable across the pavement and just put a cover over it uh I'm sure there's some liability issues waiting to happen there but you know that is an option um and I don't know the legality of it but if you have an agreement with your neighbors that you're going to do it and you're going to put this thing over it and you know maybe that's a Sol solution uh depending probably whats better if you're in a little colder sack rather than a main sort of through Street I would suggest but I don't know um and there are a number of companies now installing 7 kwatt charges in lamp posts um in residential streets just in Little Boxes the problem with a lot of them is they don't always come with like a dedicated parking space so someone could just go and park whatever car in front of it and you can't charge um you don't get like an e V only charging space like you do with a rapid charger and of course You' never see a petrol diesel car in one of those do you so they're not perfect but they are starting to pop up more so in London to be fair and sorry there's a company called connected curb that's doing loads of public charges in residential streets in Su um but a lot of that kind of stuff at the moment seems very sort of London and home counties Centric and lots of parts of the country seem to be many years away from getting anything like that certainly from from where I'm sitting there may be things going on that I don't know about but I think if you want an electric vehicle and you can't charge at home and you don't know of any schemes coming to allow people to charge them home I think you've got to get on to your Council and just bombard them with emails and phone calls saying what are you going to do about it you know we're getting pushed into this we're getting pushed into EVS which a lot of people think we getting pushed into EVS so let's do it you know give us the infrastructure to to help out um there are of course also rapid charges um rapid regular use of Rapid charges is not a massively good thing for a lot of the different batteries out there um if you the idea with a rapid charger is that you pull over and use one and you put in enough power to get you where you're going you really shouldn't be going to a rapid charger 7 days a week and charging your car up to full because that will have an effect on the battery um more so with some types of battery chemistry than others so I understand so slow charges overnight charging is a brilliant thing it's usually a lot cheaper um it happens when you're asleep and it's massively convenient if you can do it because obviously if you're using a rapid charger and your car gets 100% And you're in the middle of watching a movie or something in the cinema uh you need to get up and go and unplug it and move the car or you're going to face overstay charges in in a lot of places so stuff like that would be a bit of a pain in the bum if you're doing it on a on a regular sort of daily basis um so would I at the moment I live just outside Bournemouth I'm driving right by Bournemouth airport at the moment there's the runway uh would I I have an EV at the moment without a home charger no absolutely no way I would do it now just literally 2 minutes walk from my house is an instav volt charger and apart from at school times when people Park whatever in there a lot of people just park electric cars in spaces and don't charge the think it's like an electric car parking space is there to charge cars um and there often there's often a British gas van sitting in one of them charging up but aside from that they're reliable they work they're fast you know so it couldn't really be more convenient for me to use a public charger if it tried but I still wouldn't because for me if you can't just plug in and charge at home it all becomes a bit of a job it becomes a bit of an effort and one of the things that I love about having an electric car is the fact that it's all a bit effortless I don't have to worry about the maintenance I don't have to worry about charging don't have to worry about the cost of charging um I just get home yesterday got home in the afternoon plug the car in my octopus energy thing immediately works out the cheapest times to charge it overnight and then charged it now I asked for 100% state of charge the car was actually at 20 I think and this morning because I've got it set so you know only charges during the cheapest possible times um the car was at 902 I think 92% and the octopus thing says we didn't get to your target of 100% um but you can then just hit boost and it will take it up to the full charge but obviously you're then paying a higher rate but you know 7 and 1 half p a kilowatt hour and it means that charge probably cost me like I don't know three quid maybe and I just did it while I was asleep it just did the only inconvenience I had was literally plugging that cable in and unplugging it again and that was it and for me that's a big part of it lots of massive EV enthusiasts will go to the ends of the Earth and and they won't you know let the fact that they can't charge at home put them off having an EV um and fair play to them if they want to spend their time going to little car parks and travel lodges and all the rest of it to find a charger then fine you no problem with that you know do what you want won't affect me uh would I get one without no there the is the truth of it maybe if I lived in sh ditch or something um and they've got got tons of I'm I'm assuming shortage has got tons of sort of Street EV charges because it's you know hips to Central um maybe it' be a different cattle of fish and maybe in three or four or five years things will have changed significantly so that on Street charging and charging for people in flats and things like that is much much easier uh than it is currently so maybe if uh I make another one of these videos in a few years I'll give you a completely different answer but for the time being I wouldn't have an electric car personally without having a charger at home purely because I'm cheap and lazy that's it now if you are thinking of getting an electric car and indeed can have a charger at home um just have a shop around look wherever you can really um the only one I've got any experience with personally is Bumblebee because I used them for mine and I just couldn't fault any of it um having said that you know they were sponsoring me at the time maybe I got the red carpet rolled out I don't know um I felt like I just got a fantastic customer service but um whether you would get the same I don't know it's it's the truth of it because I only experienced it the way I experienced it but there are loads of other companies that do um home charger installations a lot of them are really up front with the price and a lot of them are sort of fixed price or you have to send them a couple of pictures and then they confirm the price to you so um have a shop around but I think you'll probably spend between 700 quid in a grand um maybe a tiny bit more depending on your setup at home uh and for um energy tariffs I'm on octopus energy I'll put my code down in the video description and pin it as the top comment if you use that referral code uh I get 50 Quid and you get 50 Quid all right that changes from time to time so don't take my word for it click on it and and and see what it tells you on the screen but um at the moment we both get 50 Quid if you sign up to Ulus energy using my link I'm also going to put a link to quote Zone in the video description and pin it as the top comment and that's because a lot of people are looking at some of these cheap used EVS now and thinking wow you know that now makes sense for me and they're not thinking possibly about the cost of getting a home charger and they're not possibly thinking about the cost of insurance and a lot of people are terrified by the cost of insurance at the moment because it's gone up massively for almost everyone and it's not just electric cars that's gone up I know there's a lot of nonsense in the press and even even on YouTube about um the cost of insuring an electric car but lots of it depends on lots of other factors where you live and everything else or if you check out one of my insurance videos just go and look in the comments in those and you'll find lots of people in little petrol and diesel cars where their insurance has literally trebled in the last 6 months last last 12 months um but I think it's important that you get a quote for your EV before you go and buy one before you even start looking to buy one um if you're looking at sort of smaller cheaper EVS the insurance might not be hideous if you're looking at a Tesla just remember it's in the same Insurance Group as a Ferrari uh so bear that in mind it is going to be expensive um but yeah I think it's a really good move to just get an insurance quote before you even go and look at a car because if you waste your time going and looking at a car and maybe falling in love with it a little bit and the whole idea you might not make the most sensible decision when it you get your insurance quote and it comes back at 800 quid more than you expected it to be or 300 quid more than you expected it to be a quot zone is a comparison site a bit like compare the market and all the rest of it they don't tend to have the same sort of marketing budget as those guys and they do have some companies on their platform um that perhaps are not on some of the others um um I've done some work with them in the past um in my sort of insurance life so that's how how I know them what we do is pop pop your information into that Pop the information of the car into that and it will return lots of insurance quotes for you and you can look at the various prices and covers if you're not an insurance expert just call your local insurance broker um people forget about insurance brokers but if you don't know what you're doing with insurance and you're trying to do it yourself online uh you can find yourself underinsured so just call your insurance broker if you're in any doubt whatsoever hope you've enjoyed that one folks I just wanted to give you my thoughts on the whole home charging thing because there a question lots of people ask me is oh I haven't got home charger should should I be thinking about an EV or not and I think a lot of it depends on where you live and your circumstances how much time you've got on your hands um I personally wouldn't but as I said I'm cheap and lazy so there you go draw your own conclusions there thanks for watching folks please give the video a thumbs up please like it please subscribe and please share wherever you can and please don't forget to follow me on social media um I've just done a couple of EV reviews actually over on the men and Motors channel that are worth checking out uh the ID Buzz one came out I think yesterday at the time I'm recording this and the VW ID3 I've recently done for men and motors um and there are also lots of EV car reviews on my channel they are unbiased they always will be unbiased uh just my honest opinion of the things as a car all right A lot of people will say is it a good EV and my answer is always why you not asking is it a good car because at the end of the day they're cars they're all cars and you don't say is it a good petrol um is it a good the diesel is it a good car and that's what it all comes down to and my reviews are always based on is it a good car thanks for watching folks I'm stopping the rambling now goodbye
