[Music] hey everybody and welcome to another learn to digitized video my name is sue and I'm a hatch educator today we're gonna be working on basic FSL now I know everyone wants to get into fancy stuff you know with different shapes and everything but I want you guys to understand what FSL is now a lot of people say oh I tried FSL and it fell apart and there's a reason for that so let's look at the main components now this is what we're gonna recreate we're not going to do the hatch but we're gonna do everything else the same and let's look in here and this is simply the background and you have to make a solid foundation for your FSL and there's a specific way to do the foundation and what it is let's zoom in here sorry I miss soon let's look at it and it is you have to have the stitches going over they have to have some kind of a connection or it's gonna fall apart and this grid back here is providing the foundation for the whole entire everything else that you see on it including the satin stitches and everything else so once you get your mesh down pat and you stitch out a couple of these and they work then you'll be able to experiment just a little bit more and come up with new and better ways and what works and what doesn't but basically it's the foundation and you have to understand that everything has to intertwine you can't just you know well you can on the mesh but you can't just plonk something here and if it doesn't have the right kind of underlay or enough underlay like if you're gonna do a scallop it's just gonna totally fall apart and that's the problem everyone's been having so let's deconstruct what this is and then we're gonna go ahead and make it because that's the most fun so we've got two layers and I think for the one that we're gonna do I'm gonna another layer now this is just too Tommy stitch and we just reduced the density and and spread it out a little bit more no underlay cuz of course that would leave squiggly marks everywhere and we're not we're not talking about underlay basically your your lining here the foundation the mash whatever you want to call it is the underlay for everything else it's what's gonna hold it back together so if you can master this part you can master FSL with a little bit of playing around so it's two layers what's the difference between the layers one is going up and down and one is going this way now I'm gonna put in a third one and we're gonna have it at a 45 degree angle so then you have three and I think the stitch up might be a little bit better but if you want to do - I mean that's fine it's gonna look great so the other component here is what you can attach you know ribbon or anything to and I'm going to show you how to do that and it's easier than you think and you'll be quite surprised and then the other thing is the satin stitch and if we look here at our settings Auto spacing is fine everything is fun let's go to here to stitching so this does have a large amount of underlay no effects or anything like that we're keeping it simple and I did want it to do Center not offset but if you notice the way that I've done this one is that I have made I'm clicking on the blue the mesh part it goes almost to the edge it's only a millimeter or two away and that is so nothing pulls away everything's gonna get caught up and I did both of them like this and and those are the basic parts of it so we've got your mesh you've got your satin stitch around with the mesh pulled right up nice amount of underlay underlay on the satin stitch and widths all right so let's set up our new design so what I want you guys to do is we're going to switch from us to metric just because the numbers are a little bit easier and you can be a little more precise I still use I still use the Imperial system for our us I guess they call it now I dated myself there sorry for because I need to know five by seven and stuff like that but for the rest of the time try to learn the metric it'll work better so let's go up to our grid and let's right-click on the grid so it comes up and we want the grid set at one millimeter by one millimeter now this is great it kind of looks like a mess here but when you zoom in now you know how big a millimeter is as compared to your stitches it's really handy John explains it extremely well in one of his classes and he do some playing around with it to really get the hang of it but this is one millimeter so now you have a sense of what that is and it's really helpful it's not gonna help you when you go to one-to-one because it's kind of a blur but then you really know that a millimeter is really small isn't it it's really small most definitely so that's all we need to do to start out now I've gone from 1 to 1 we're gonna digitize so let's go to digitize and we're gonna do digitize a closed shape and we're gonna start off with our foundation so I'm gonna go actually we could do let's let's change our minds let's do digitized square click and drag it out now it's really hard to tell how big it is well show you a quick little shortcut there hit enter and let's go back to our select and I have some you know decent settings that'll just make it easy you guys can play around with it as much as you want so I want at 1 29.57 you don't have to be whoops how about we do it in the right spot we want it a little bit smaller 1 29.57 and then we want this to be what is my number 50 1.96 so you don't have to be that precise that was just me I've been playing around with it any shape will do that's fine we're gonna do simple because this is a basic lesson and we're gonna learn about how to start off your future of freestanding lace because it is awesome it absolutely is awesome so now we want to fix up our to Atami this is our first one our first layer down we want to fix up our tatami so it's right for what we want now this is pretty thick I'm pretty sure we don't want it too thick so we're gonna go down here and we're gonna play around with the density and the density is gonna make all the difference in this because this won't stick together you could put a couple layers on it it'll be thick but it's not the look that you want it's not going to be anything that you want so let's go here we want this to be further apart so we want this to enter so you can already see the change we want this three enter and that's why using millimeters is pretty easy and let's zoom in a little bit that is looking pretty good what is the problem the problem is we have underlay let's take off the underlay and now you can see it's starting to look how you want so stitching go I want this one at zero and that's going to move the stitches so they go straight across except for didn't do it zero I guess we have to scroll down maybe I didn't do right blue blue blue blue blue blue no it is changing the angle it's not what I wanted let you catch up there with me you know what the easier way would be let's do resequenced we'll leave that let it catch up now it's at zero now we can look and you see they're going straight across perfectly done this is a nice spacing you can play around with the spacing you can play around with the stitch lengths if you want to but just for basic this is this is gonna work I've stitched it out and it's gonna work and I want everyone to start on that the other important thing is we want it to travel on edge what does that mean that means when it's going from one end to another we want it to stick to the edges thank you can you stick to the edges if you take that off you can see what's gonna happen here when we put another layer on you could something going through the middle and that's gonna make your mesh look kind of terrible kind of terrible indeed so what do we want to do next we want to copy this because this is only our first part so what we want to do is we're gonna copy and then we're gonna paste because we want it right on top copy and paste doesn't look any different but if you notice there it is we've already been highlighted let's do it the easy way let's go into reshape oh we got to check on our starting endpoints too now this here is our likes if I missed it and I always do that because of the way I am it's our stitch line there we go so we want this back up to exactly where it was thank you there we go if you have trouble grabbing that's fine I do it all the time just because I'm Way ahead of myself most of the time and we want the angle to be up and down now do you see what happened there nice-looking grid looking good now let's go back to our first piece and go into reshape and starts here and stops there so why don't we just make this easier so we remember what we're doing because we want nice connections you don't you're gonna have jump stitch sometimes we don't really want them so this is layer one start and stop layer to go back into our reshape and there we go start and stop exactly the same start and stop now if you want to make a third layer and some people think this is the better way to do it but you guys can check it out and see what you think let's go to pace because remember we've already copied it so paste and then we're gonna go into reshape and that's the first one and I should have done the easier one maybe maybe but that's okay pull it out not missed it again because I always do that's okay if you do now we have nice lines to put it back on and we can put it exactly where it was now this is the third layer so we kind of want this at an angle how about if I move that maybe I can grab it you can't always type the numbers into there we go did I get it I did not I always miss it always underneath there we go well that's okay no frustration I'll get it so the angle that we want oh we want my stop point right there because and then we move our start point so let's think of that there we go we want it at a 45 look at the numbers there we wanted at a 45 right into the corner or I guess 30 would do 45 is that might be too much 45 let's do that so now we have three layers now we have three layers let's go back to our select heat let's zoom right in that's kind of mushy that kind of looks good and that sets a really really nice foundation you can see it goes that way it goes that way and it goes that way and that is probably the worst of it is setting up the grid those are the settings and that is how you do it now we've got to make sure I'm gonna check each one travel on edge travel on edge travel on edge and because we copied and pasted we know that there are no there's no underlay on it at all so for this one we're gonna do one more layer but this one is going to be the satin stitch so we can do paste again we're gonna make everything really easy then we're gonna switch to outline and then we're gonna switch to satin and that hat is how easy it is to do so the only thing we have to change there's a couple things we need to change the first thing we need to change is we need to make this satin stitch a bit thicker this is a little too thin it looks nice and everything but we want to make sure it grabs everything so go ahead and switch this to five make it a little fatter and you can see how it looks it's not splitting it's almost I think it'll split at seven so make it as thick as we can without splitting looks good I think we want two underlay edged run because we want this all to be nice and solid and underlay two zigzag you can leave those numbers or play around with them whatever you like now the only other thing than I did you can either make the satin a bit smaller or you can make these three layers a bit bigger because we want this line of the mash to be a little further up now for this one I've got the numbers just to make it easier and those numbers are let me look them up I don't remember numbers very well I'm a word person there we go 1:32 so just really not that much bigger one thirty two point three one and you don't have to know the numbers for it you can just mess around with it that's how I came to these numbers there's nothing in particular and see that's a little bit too much you see we don't want this sticking out so make this pull this out just as close to the edge as what we can get millimeter here millimeter there is gonna make the difference so just a tiny bit so don't worry about the numbers if you're doing this yourself don't worry about it so there we go now we're coming along now we're cooking with fire on this and again this is going to be the base for anything you do so the next thing we're gonna do is the little hook so if you want to know a quick easy way to do that you won't believe it let's go to lettering let's go to lettering we want it on block and we're going to type the letter C and we want it to be a capital because we want it to be big and they're low and behold click it again and the squares turn that is how you do it you can do a letter O as well but there's no need for the stitching underneath so I just used to see I just thought it was better and we're gonna tuck that in and I'm gonna do it on top for now so I can see how much we're tucking in now we know the mesh goes almost to the edge so we don't want this you know down here we don't want it showing we're gonna hide it a little bit better we don't want it right on the edge because you know what that's not going to hold together remember our main theory it's all about underlay and holding everything together so we on it somewhere in between so it has a good kind of foundation on the mesh part I'm thinking about right there and I think we can make it a little bit bigger too let's see we do want underlay and we want to underlays you can leave the number so we want center run we actually want edge run so the center lot run does exactly what you think when it's laying down the underlay it goes along the center and you've seen your machine do this and then it goes back because I put a second on a zigzag it goes back there and I move that edit undo and then it starts with the Suttons so if you're doing it we want you know a nice base we want everything to cross over as much as possible so edge run is going to put a one on close to the edge on the outside and then on the inside either/or and just leave the stitch length that's all basic stuff you can again play around with it and then it's gonna do a zigzag and then it's gonna do our satin stitches and that's gonna give it a good enough base to hold on and as long as you have this you know maybe in the middle I guess there's still enough room to hook a ribbon in you could make it bigger if that's what you want I thought it was the perfect size and I thought it was kind of cool too I thought it was pretty easy to do so let's select this guy effects we don't want any effects to fill we've got it in satin we're gonna do manual spacing and we're gonna change it just a tiny bit just so it's a little bit you know more dense more stitches and that's fine and don't worry about the auto split either so edge run and zig zag are your friends now the next problem we have that's just kind of sitting on top there what the heck we don't want that we're gonna put it to stitch after after that now the next thing that we've done and we may have to go back and check it out is let's look on our reshape so it's going to end air-sea now we didn't look on this is this one range that we want number three yeah we didn't change that you have to remember so what it way with the way we have it right now is that it's gonna stitch the third one on the angle and I just simply forgot to do it and then it's gonna go me and it's gonna jump there we don't want that big jump stitch so why don't we take it and we put it right here so then what's gonna happen it's gonna stitch out everything and then it's right there to start so then we go back here and let's go to reshape and we'll make sure it'll be underneath but let's be efficient it's gonna start there and we want it to stop there and that's how that's gonna work and where does the next one we're just a satin stitch start and stop see if you know we want it to we want it to whoops oops let's take our start we want it to start here and I'm gonna say I want it to stop right in the middle here so let's go over it again and this will you know show you how to do it we've got the first layer stitching out stitch away it's starting here and stopping here now we can move it or change it if you want but it's okay because nothing's going to show the next one is going to we want it to start here and stop we can put the stop point here and we're gonna go back and do the leave the first one so we want it the the first one started wherever it doesn't matter stopped here so we want the second layer to start here no jump stitches no nothing let's go to our third one and it's going to start let's wait a minute got to remember we want it to start there so let's go to our third one and we want it to start here and stop there so no jump stitches the way that I'm doing and if you need to go back and check again I'm how many times have I done it I don't know but that's okay let's go on our CE start with last one finish on the C and then straight into the satin stitch it's gonna start there and finish there so whew we've got all that worked out that would seem like a little bit of work the next thing I'm gonna do is change the color to something cool because I feel like cool and we can see that a little bit better nice nice nice so now we have it all optimized as we go along we've got this tucked underneath now we can have some fun that's all there is to it that is your basic you can do that in any shape as long as it's closed and as long as everything's overlapping properly I bet you thought it was a lot harder than this it isn't and this is going to be a beautiful bookmark and they look great and it's great for beginning and once you practice and you understand you can change the satin stitch to be a scallop or you can do you know a motif as long as you have the right underlay and as long as you have everything connecting and overlapping probably a little more than you think then it's going to work so let's put some shapes on it let's be careful of where we're putting shapes if you want to change colors that's fine you've just got to make sure that you change the bobbin to the same color on the one that I did is a sample and practice thing to get all my numbers to make it easier for you guys I changed I did the base turquoise and I did the lettering white so whatever you prefer you can change as many colors as you want you just remember that you have to change the bobbin two so you really don't want an FSL design that has you know five color changes you can do it but it's just you have to change the color and the bobbin so so far so good this again will stitch out beautifully and there's so many things you can do with it now one idea that I had is this satin stitch is kind of plain and I thought I would put something you know like a motif on it and that didn't really work out because there's so much push-pull on it and you're not stitching it out on something very stable stuff moves around not enough to make a difference in here but enough that stuff doesn't line up however you can feel free to again like I said put a instead of this thick satin you can put a scallop and then satin over top a little bit thinner to hold everything down and make good overlaps and connections and you'll find that'll work too so satin stitch on this one is your friend so let's go to what can we do on this I think I did a heart and oh let's go check I did a heart now let's look at this heart I just hand drew it it's no big deal let's look at it the spacing is standard point 36 you can remember that that's pretty good Auto split and the width you can now that you're doing it on the base oh wait a minute see now I'm glad I look back I forgot about these guys this was a cool idea that I came up with and it's super easy to do so let's remember these numbers stitch length to minimum length point eighty so let's do that first I'm sorry I almost totally forgot because we need to sandwich that in there because if you were to do these four over top right where we have on our purple one it wouldn't look very nice and they wouldn't hold very well so that's another thing we need to do so let's go to our design and do the fringe and I'm just gonna show you how easy it is now this is one reason why I said I want you guys to put it on let's put it at the six proper area six whoops good enough six under did it and now we can see everything clearly and all you have to do basically is follow the lines now I don't want it started up here I didn't think it would look nice I started it basically here where the grid is and must go to digitize and we're gonna move it after don't worry and we're gonna do an open shape and all we're doing is the single line and look at that it was standard variable run length you can leave it on or off and again we want good overlaps right so we want to start it here and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 is 1 centimeter 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 how about we do at 18 and then I'm gonna go back on itself and I'm gonna go miss a millimeter and then I'm gonna go on the next millimeter you don't want them too close you don't want them too far apart either fun experiment to show how easy it works too now I'm not going to sit and do the whole thing but I'll show you a quick shortcut there and there and this is how I did the other one hit enter and we'll just leave it in blue so we can see what we're doing here and all I did is go back to my select II right click and move it down up let's move it down just a little bit more now we are creating jump stitches we don't want things to don't double up or anything get it right on the lines cuz that's what we have our grid for and look it's all evenly spaced and there is gonna be a tiny jump there but it's not gonna matter it's gonna be nicely hidden so let's do that again and line it up on our lines you don't even have to be that precise about that end see now I'm a little off there aren't I that's how you can tell so just move it down a little bit it's hard to see when they disappear like that look at that how cool is that and what we're gonna do is just keep doing it all the way down there right click hold and get it down it'll be this one see now I'm already getting the rhythm of it right click hold down on this one double-check I am off one millimeter so down again looking good it's easier than you think I we could put these a little closer together so I might I might do that it depends I guess on what the look that you want I think that the one I did I had enough but let's go zoom in and we'll see how close we did them cuz I might have done them a millimeter are too too far let's do one more I still think this would look really good but let's look at the other one and let's zoom in and yes see I just did them a square apart and the one I just did I did too but see how you can tell it's easy when you look like this well that kind of looks the same that you can't really tell anything zoom right in and you know one of these squares is one millimeter so you know I did it a little bit too far on this one because look they're further apart they're two squares apart so we can do that again or we can just leave it it's not gonna have quite the same effect as the first one I kind of like that better but that's how that's how you do it why don't we move one of these why don't we do copy and why don't we bring it here too and paste but anything goes absolutely anything goes so to see it is quite a bit quite a bit closer so let's delete these guys you can if you want to leave it two squares if you want to do with three squares or if you want to do them right beside each other you can do that too does not matter whatever try that's the thing with this beginner class just try and see what you think so what I'm gonna do just a speed stuff up for class because we don't wanna I already showed you how to do it we don't want to spend all day doing this I'm going to copy and I'm gonna go over to our purple one and I'm gonna delete that and then I'm gonna go right here and I'm going to paste and while everything selected because that one's in a different position I am gonna put it where I want it so we want it you know three-quarters over and that one works perfect so one square apart now we want this the satin stitch to cover it up because doesn't look very nice the way it is so let's move this satin stitch down now you could leave them blue I think that's okay with it blue but let's make it all perfect purple now you could go through and change all these one-by-one knots okay or you can go to colors and right here is the blue and let's make it purple so now rocking along so I haven't forgotten anything that's our fringe let's go to zero fill up our screen looking good I think that's a good start if you don't want to do the fringe don't but I thought it was really cute so we want to add you know designs on it you could you can do some motif stitching around if you wanted you can do hearts you can do running stitches to make a design as long as it shows up again it's going to require a little bit of experimentation I would suggest using the back stitch or the stem stitch just to make it show up in this grid but let's do the lettering first and then we'll get to our details so let's go to lettering let's go here you could do a monogram in it too we can look at that it's all about ideas right so we're gonna do a couple of ideas what can we do digitizing with sue yay and that's a bit big but we're going to have what we do it digitizing one line with another line don't forget to get rid of your spaces because they mess up your centering and if you don't know why it's because you have a space and I'm okay on all of those let's you could do it simply like that but of course we have so many things that are disposable for disposal for lettering let's see curly well that one's okay it might be a little bit thin now I'm using my arrow key oh that one is really pretty I might do that one I'm doing my arrow key to go down so I can see Oh see I like that one too that's um you know and I can see that I've missed a space somewhere because they right there to see that it's off so let's get rid of that there now it's off always just watch for that and then click back on here and then go up and down if you want to see what you're doing I'm looking at the screen Oh see that's nice that one might be you don't want anything too thin some of these might be a little bit thin experimentation of course underlay well that's way too thin that's outline definitely the thicker the better and the bigger the better you don't want to be see that's a great font right there that's a serif font nice and thick so you don't want them too oh that's I like that one oh that one's even better small script but see the difference of how thick they are thicker is better cuz you don't want them sinking into our mesh and you will find if you do something like a heart or something that's just satin stitches however small you'll find that it'll kind of get stuck in there and it won't look the way that you want I like the script so why don't we keep that and why don't we spread it out a little bit so yeah the couple couple things to watch out for now I just like to i know i'm stretching it and this is against typography rules but i just kind of like doing it that way now that's nice and thick let's go check our underlay we've got a center run I'm gonna change that to edge run and underlay is zigzag and now we should have enough on it to do it fine so pretty much you can use any lettering that you want what color are we gonna make that purple and green I'm not sure about that purple and light purple we could always do purple and purple depending on how many times yeah you know what let's just leave it all one purple than when it stitches out it's gonna be fantastic so underlay everything let's check everything you gotta check everything that you do it's still lettering let's go to our objects so we can see we know the sea is a lettering that's lettering and that's all I did I manually digitized the H for the one that I did here let's look at it it's always good to deconstruct stuff but see how big the lettering is and it really I might have it too small so you can experiment with that that is an actual letter this these are the pieces and I just manually digitized them if you don't know how to manually digitize a letter properly so it looks exactly the same as what you're typing then you need to watch a class on that it's a bit complicated so the way I have this one is that it's stitching out and if you notice I'm doing backstitch stem stitch was ok back stitch was ok probably in retrospect I would use the stem stitch because it would show up better but again experimentation the way I did it was fine it looked ok you spend a lot of time stitching but who are it's fun so this should work I think it should be absolutely fine let's do a smaller word though how about we can do something something like love and then we can get it really big and then we know it'll work so L whoops two L's no takes a minute l oh wow ve I know it I know how to spell it and let's try making that it's a little bit hard to see because we have our awesome grid we don't want the satin spit stitches to split or anything now I don't like that capital L you guys might I'm not sure let's try going through that one yeah and nice and thick oh that one's kind of groovy yep I like that one that was Woodstock I think yeah I like Woodstock if you want to flip through some more go right ahead that one to me looks nice and thick and let's just double check just anyways edge right underneath nothing changed how cute is that just love is and you can put whatever words I you want again make sure it's thick if it's thin it's just gonna sink back in and might cause you troubles so you can do shapes I would suggest for the one that you know your first try keep it simple keep it simple so you don't get frustrated this will work exactly like it is absolutely exactly like it is and then once you get the hang of it you can try some different things and if it doesn't work then you mark it down that doesn't work what do I need to do to fix it you need more underlay you need EdgeWalk you need you know it needs to be touching more it needs to be in more if your stitches are falling apart when you wash it out why well did you have enough underlay did you have them connecting are things overlapping enough no jump stitches now of course there's gonna be little jumps in here but because I've done it the same color it's not gonna be bad and I guess we're gonna have one jump stitch from here see I tend to when I'm doing this just to keep it straight I go back and check yes see it ends here the satin stitch ends here and then it's gonna do a little jump to there that's fine there's nothing you can do about that and you probably won't be able to see it if you wanted to be super clever you can just do a stitch over let me show you how to do that because it's not going to show so let's reshape and right here right here is what we want so we have to kind of remember I'm gonna put my finger on my screen I have all sorts of little tricks because I get interrupted all the time let's go to digitize so my fingers on the screen we want digitize open shape and it's right there and you can do it this way and then we have to go into our let's press enter and we're just gonna leave that blue just just for a minute and go into here and let's go into reshape and reshape we want it to start right here and that's how that's gonna work and then the letters are just set up for nearest connection make sure you have that on now that looks like wow soup some that that's just really pretty let's turn it to purple and you're not gonna be able to see it look it disappeared the minute I did it that is how you do it you can see it a little bit here but that's okay when it stitches that you will be able to see anything so you can hide you can manually go through and do your start and end points and you can hide it by you can follow along here you can go along here up and over you can depending on where your end point is I don't remember where I put it I put it right in the corner let's check out the Oh where's the O starting so you really can make it so there's no jump stitches there it's super easy to do that now you may have to break apart these these are on nearest connections so if you wanted to you know make your connections proper then because it's all recognizing it as one thing and it's all nearest connections but if you want it to be perfect about it break that guy apart through edit that's on edit objects break it apart not too many times break it apart and you look down here it's in letters now we can do it now let's go into our o let's go into our reshaping and all you have to do is look where I've got it here I ended the L there and just do a run here move it to here so you we know our line let's go and it's worth taking the time to do it this way then there's no jump stitches there's absolutely nothing to do and you put this on your machine and you guys are going to be so proud when it just stitches out lickety-split so I want it to go from there to there let's get it exactly on the line just for perfection needs there there we go whoops enter and it's blue because I'm out of rhythm apparently today and there we go oh yeah remember to you're doing these nice connections they got to be in the right spot for them to work so we need it to stitch that then link over to the L this one goes here and we doing this manually I'm not gonna do all of them you guys get the idea I remember where you start and stop points you can put your little finger on the screen you can remember the numbers you can also do one of these if you need to remember I find it's just faster and this is just maybe a su way of doing things I find it just faster to do it that way what I said and keep checking and I will before I even think about stitching this guy out I am going to double check all my connections again and you can end up with a perfect a perfect design at the end now it may not seem that fancy but when you stitch it out it looks great so what else can we do that we can do some satin stitches designs now I did a motif but I changed it so you can do that I don't really feel like drawing a heart so I'm gonna go to motif stamp and let's see them in full swing now you have to realize that something like this unless you do it in a different color and do a quite large it's really not going to show up we really need the satin stitches we need really need the satin stitches going on so we could do stars we could do this is what I did I just took a heart and oops click ok I dragged it for no reason and let's you can see what I'm doing click click there it is that's all I want I just want one heart and then I made it bigger and now that won't look right even the small heart won't look right because it's too thin so what I did I just made it outline and then I turned it to satin and that's all I did and put that heart there oh the before we put anything on our bookmark we have to go to stitching and make sure it has the right amount of underlay and it does so let's take this heart and let's do put it on an angle just a little bit and I don't want it blue but let's do it right there and I think that looks so cute let's turn it to purple and then once you've done all your connections and make sure you have a connection here so you could use quite a few the motif stamps and experiment around with them I suggest a thin thinner satin outline as two opposed to the big heart I didn't feel it sat properly make your connections make everything smooth once you get this thing down pat then you can do just about anything like I said you can change the edges and make a scalloped edge make sure you have to write underlay and put a little satin stitch a little bit bigger than this one but not as big as this one to cover it up and hold everything down so you could even be really clever and make a copy I dragged a copy of our C and let's do this just as a quick you know ideas I always like to throw ideas out on you guys and you can do this and make nice connections but see how instantly this changes and you want them soo-min to where we're supposed to be and you want them to be down more that's why you have to zoom into the 600 I'm still not quite there but I'm working on it and I want it I don't want this edge up I want it underneath and a tiny bit more than that now obviously we're not gonna put them sitting up like this you also have to remember where your mesh ends so you can do usually something like this you and I know it's a letter C but do you think anyone else is going to and I would pull out a guideline just to make sure we're going even because you kind of want this to be perfect that's the first one I like better is down enough so these guys a little bit of precision placement but then let's tuck these guys and you want them right close just a tiny bit over because we want them to be nice and stitch out again you could probably you know design yourself better ones like this but just just as a quick thing now let's select shift-select and let's go back up because remember we want this to stitch underneath the outline and there we go see and it's cute already that's all there is to it and just experiment a little bit and if you don't like you know your machine might find it a little tough under there move it over a little bit that would be fine but do make sure you have your satin stitch actually see we're not quite close enough see what I did there I clicked on the mesh and then I clicked on that we're not quite down enough and we might get into trouble so that's more like what we want so down more than you think but go back and check and look and use your guidelines have your grid set up properly we're pretty safe on that see how they're how far down they are and click on yeah that's how I want it to be so now let's zoom out hit zero to zoom out that looks even better so that would be super easy to do let's put it across just so we can see right click slide it over make sure we put it down enough right click slide over make sure we put it down enough one more so if I have too many I only want it to go to here and you can pull out guidelines to make sure everything is okay whoops I want that one back at it undo delete it's in the wrong spot so we can manually move them now that they're here we can manually move them and try to make sure it's not creeping up like mine are try to keep it even okay this is all caused by my mouse and not zooming in enough so zoom in get them straight now the other thing is you see what we've done we've got to move all these guys over because we want it underneath right we want it underneath the Sun there we go and we want them in order and what I should have done in the first place let's check reshape start and stop oh it's done it all for me yay I have closest closest trim now look I have a problem these are up a bit too high so what I did is I have them up a bit too high so pull it your guide line zoom right in make a nice straight line guide for you these guys it's just gonna irritate me so I'm gonna bring it down this is why you need to be zoomed into that magic number of six to one six hundred percent super easy to get to and then you can be way more accurate and save yourself time and do it that way there we go I just move all around when I'm teaching so you see how off they are I saw them as a bit off and now I'm like wow yeah these are way off we can move this guy over it but you can fiddle around so that is how you do basic FSL and add a few things and add a few designs add your own lettering you could put mom on this you can put dad you could put sister you could put names and have a personal bookmark quickly and easily and the key is I'm going to say it again under lay connections and everything has to overlap enough to hold it together and if you can master this and experiment I would suggest doing the basic one first and then add these guys or create your own create your own scalloped and multiply and make sure you have the right everything make sure you have the right underlay stitch that one out see what you think the idea the main thing is especially if you do it all one color is that you don't have any jump stitches and so you want to go through each part like I was doing I did that on purpose each part and make sure you have connections if you're going into the middle of it pick the shortest spot and you still can't see that line that connection line that I made there it is only because it's a smidgen you know an eighth of a millimeter off but when you stitch it out you won't see it so remember those points master the basics this is absolute basic FSL once you master it do a few things add to it so do simple add a scalloped edge add you know the fringe add the fringe all the way around do some different motifs along the edge just make sure if you do a motif that you cover it up with a satin stitch somehow watch some other FSL bookmark stitch out and now you will begin to understand the rhythm of it and how they do it
