just outside Grantham lies a slightly eerie certainly exuberant and surprisingly little-known stately home built beyond the magnificent gatehouse you might just recognize this as the location from the 1999 film the haunting and what an otherworldly presence it is Harlech stone manor was built in 1845 on the site of a previously demolished Elizabethan manor house Victorian architecture tended to borrow and revive other ages neo-romantic and neo-gothic for instance Alec stone is no exception a striking mixture of Jacobean gothic for rock and Elizabethan architecture that is quite simply one of the most astonishing buildings in the country the flamboyancy of its style is echoed by its facilities this structure at the back is a small railway that serve the house simply for the purpose of bringing in coal it's all the more amazing then that a building of such opulence was barely lived in by its owner and creator Gregory Gregory employing Antony salvan as architect for the houses exterior Gregory treated Harlequins construction as a hobby bordering on obsession his purpose was to embellish and decorate rather than inhabit he finally moved into the house in 1851 but died just three years later the house is now used as the British campus of the American University of Evansville
