hello guys in this video we'll take a look at why handheld shooting can improve your videos a lot [Music] I know there are several videos on YouTube on how to shoot better handheld videos but I think the lacked information on why is beneficial to shoot handheld why does it create better videos for my clients let me explain the past 10 years I've been working as a freelance filmmaker and what I've seen is that more and more clients ask me to document events events where don't have much time to rig where don't have much time to direct people and staged scenes it's all about scanning the location with your eyes and finding the moments you want for the video even though I bring my study cam and shouldering I often end up using just my hands why is this because when you see an action you want to capture you may only have seconds to shoot it you have to be able to get the camera in the right position drag focus and adjust exposure before the moment is gone place your focus on what is happening in front of the camera and not the camera itself here are some examples of things are shot using only my hands and some stabilizing techniques weddings you don't want to be in the way but capturing moments as they are natural [Music] traveling important to carry as little as possible and you don't know what to find just around the corner [Music] animals won't wait for you to read your study cap the moment you realize you can skate on frozen sand or your moment [Music] so why not just shoot handheld well there are reasons why to use tripods and set gaps they can do things that is almost impossible when shooting handheld and they can help you to tell the story in different ways my point is shooting handle gives you the ability to shoot fast in an easy affordable and very flexible way you will be able to shoot more at time to experiment and move quickly around and that may be crucial to capture the right moments the only downside is that the shots can get shaky but let's go through some techniques to get more stable handheld shots firstly you need a three point contact with the camera be sure to use both hands and the camera strap as a third point of contact hold the camera in a far enough distance to make the strap as tight as possible without hurting yourself now you can film in different angles and even get quite smooth jib and dolly shots this however takes some practice look at it as yoga you are in a flow with the camera it's in contact with your inner emotions [Music] when walking with a camera keep the strap tight and bend your knees yes you look a bit stupid but it's more important to get the shots you need [Music] it's hard to get smooth shots without the starblaster inside lands so shoot a bit wider and move closer to the subject instead of swimming if you don't have a camera strap be sure to place your elbows firmly against your body then move your entire body when panning and tilting you can also use the viewfinder as a third point of contact hold your breath when moving this tablet is the shot as well when you know these techniques a shoulder rig will actually feel a bit unpractical in my eyes using the strap is often better and if you want to be the king of handheld shooting get yourself a nice array key this is the EC rig minimax it can handle rigs up to seven kilos and it's from Sweden it distributes all the way to your entire body so you can shoot an entire day without getting tired it keeps camera stable in the position you want and if you need two hands for something you can just let go of your camera the easter-egg will hold it for you the more the camera weighs the more stable it will be so just mount the monitor microphone Rieman Patras and so on whatever we have I've been using the history in some projects now and it turned out to be one of the most practical film equipments I ever owned yes it costs a bit but you'll thank yourself later for buying it it's a true investment here we are in oslo in norway and we are created opportunity scenario we're going to shoot a little video about oslo and why it's a good place to get the Christmas feeling I'm going to use my gh4 with a speed booster and Sigma 18 to 35 millimeter since you want to capture as many good shots as possible tonight we're going to shoot handheld Walmart in my friend has the sony a7s mark 2 which has a built-in stabilizer and established in lens I don't have a cell visor so it's interesting to compare them and see the difference yes let's go much ego [Music] said other than no then it was time for the sony a7s mark to as you can see the stabilization inside the camera and lens helped a lot but the gh4 shot is not too bad we can stabilize it and post as well I'll come back to that [Applause] shooting in slow motion will also make your shots feel more stable seen emotions melodic el directo rest of their mission [Music] another great thing is that you don't draw a lot of attention people just think you are yet another tourists and therefore don't look into the camera [Music] [Music] it's important to eat or as your Sheikh of hungriness in Norway we eat moose burgers [Music] as mentioned since you're so flexible you can easily experiment with your camera and create something unique [Music] now let's take a look at how to stabilize the footage in post I'm using Premiere Pro and it has a great feature called warp stabilizer as you can see this shot is already quite stable thanks to the techniques we used on set but let's see if we can stablish it even more just add the warp stabilizer to your shot and wait for it to analyze [Music] here is a more advanced shot we got more depth and a focus change therefore the warp stabiliser struggles a bit as you can see by the jelly effect in the beginning of the shots [Music] and as you can see it needed to zoom in 108 percent to be able to say blaster shots that's why 4k video is great to stabilize as you won't end up with a pixelated shots to make this shot better let's adjust the stabilizer turn down the smoothness for example to 2% now it's not as smooth but most importantly we remove the jelly effects when shooting try not to get big moving object in and out of the frame as it will confuse the warp Sylvester it works best if the frame is clean without too many layers or depth if you can call that when trying to establish full HD footage in a 4k timeline or visa versa you will get this message then you need to right-click the shot press nest and Starbuzz it again you can also use the no motion setting to make your shot completely static like it was shot on a tripod [Music] so we edited the Christmas video now let's have a look [Music] all together [Music] loving-kindness really [Music] together it's dude father our study Christmas [Music] come let me tell hand-held filming is not just about being flexible finding the moments and save money it can also improve your story if using it all the time in your film the viewers can get tired of watching what what happens if use a tripod in the beginning of a film and then go handled can it tell the audience that something new is about to happen in the short film the camera we thought about this using both stylers tripods and hand-held filming check it out on our channel do you hold on here's my that's it folks hope you liked the video in just 2 days we're uploading the first episode of
