Transcriber: Anastasia L Reviewer: Tarek Mamdouh The motive for mass murder of the teenagers in Buffalo who on May 14th. Killed ten people, most of them black, was driven out of racial paranoia. The 68 year old who killed one and injured five others shortly two days after he retired. These people. Salvador Ramos, who killed 21 people on May 24th, may someday become a part, though he is no longer alive to explain himself. Repeated mass shootings now provide a tragic value to the American lifestyle. What these horrors have in common, though, is the weapon used. Guns are simple, reliable tools for killing. A man with a gun and plenty of ammunition can kill more people more quickly and with far less effort than he can with a knife. An object or his bare hands. But more importantly, those who are armed with guns are provided and authorized with the ability to shoot more people with a free will and out of their defense. The weapon Mr. Ramos used, a military style assault rifle with high capacity magazines, allowed him to keep shooting until someone shot him. The fact that most of the victims were children makes the crime unusually horrific. Unfortunately, it certainly resembles countless other American tragedies where the easier availability of guns in society have made it far much more easier to kill people than it was in the past. Now, let me ask you, how many guns do you think the average American household has? Three In fact, the average American household has six guns. The United States has more guns than people. For every 100 people, there are 121 guns. Gun gun violence in this country is an epidemic. But why can't we simply ban the ban, the use of weapons or simply if we get harsher laws? The political divide remains sharp. There are other reasons why policy doesn't follow public opinion, and most of them are inherent in the very structure of the American Constitution. The Senate, for example, by giving equal representation to every state, militates against majority rule. Gun control proponents look into the US Constitution and often argue that the Second Amendment to bear arms was meant to protect the right of people in the United States. In case they have to protect themselves from the tyrannical government government which is present today. Yeah. After all, it was expressly designed to enshrine the rights of individuals enslaved and free. All 13 states controlled by government, controlled by Democrats, have enacted against funds, guns and improved background checks. However, 14 states, which are highly conservative Republicans, have passed laws allowing citizens to possess ownership without a permit. Supporters see firearms as an important tool for self-defense, influence. Self-defense, hunting and target shooting. As well as a powerful individual to represent. Us, as well as a powerful symbol to represent individual rights. Critics say America's permissive approach leads to tens of thousands of deaths per year. These individuals in small, rural states provide a disproportionate influence to the US state and influence the decisions and their actions. Additionally, the National Rifle Association, as you all have heard of the NRA, has been one of the most influential gun lobbying groups in the US for the past few decades. In fact, in 2016 it provided $55 million and in 2020 it provided $30 million only only for people to support their cause. That's because gun control is one of the many controversial issues in which the majority opinion in the nation runs back to the Senate's rules and the National Party policy of minority states largely dominated by Republicans since 1994. This disproportionate influence of small states has come to shape the competition of national power in America. The NRA consists of almost all, or if not all, Republicans and their rules and opinions. Hence, votes on advocating guns have not decreased at all. In their opposition to gun control. Republicans in Congress clearly are prioritizing, prioritizing the sentiments of gun owners in their points. Even though the NRA has weakened institutionally, its influence on the GOP has even magnified the reconfiguration of the American politics. If there has been any hope from congressional action on gun control, specifically in the aftermath of these tragedies or mass shootings in the future, it will almost certainly require reform or elimination of this bill buster immediately. Otherwise, the basic rules of American politics will continue to allow Republicans to impose their priorities when the clear majority of America disagrees. And I'm sure even me and you. The hardship is that there is no way to confront America's accelerating epidemic of gun control and gun violence. Without first addressing. The systematic erosion of majority rule. Democrats have since been. Proposing the common sense gun control policy. This policy for 25 years, But none of them , not the universal background checks, not the red flag laws, or not even a ban to assault style weapons has confronted the core issue. Since the shooting in Sarnia in 2012, there have been more than 1600 mass shootings in America. The American Constitution makes room for so much polarization. It has that more harm than good. This is all due to the easy access of guns. We all know that we cannot help solve every act of evil and every act of violence. But we can solve one act of evil and one act of violence. Thank you.
