how loud are guns well they're very loud they really are tremendously loud quite mind-bogglingly loud in fact almost nothing anyone can say can quite prepare you for how amazingly loud guns are and yet in the movies they don't seem to be that loud yes we're aware that they're very loud but you can hear what everyone's saying can't you well yes they don't actually record the bangs of the guns and the dialogue that the actors are saying at the same time because you just can't there's no microphone that can that can cope with the massive difference between the loudness of a bang and the comparative quietness of someone yelling so what they do is they set the microphones for the actors voices so that the actors voices come across right and then when the guns go bang if they're actually using blank firing guns and there is a bang that'll just sound ridiculous and the recording equipment won't cope so they'll have to dub bang noises over the top of that to make it sound right because the actual recorded incredibly loud bang noise won't sound right at all Plus at the other end of it when you're seeing the film in the cinema you won't be hearing the bangs even if they recorded them accurately because if they had speakers capable of making bangs that loud which they don't but if they did no one would want to go to that scene Ammar again because you've just deafened the audience guns are really really loud I can remember seeing a demonstration outside the joycie Museum in New Castle it's not there anymore and these were people firing black-powder weapons they were using muskets there only about five of them now I say black powder but they weren't actually using black powder they were using modern gun powder which is much easier to get hold of it's also a lot more efficient and less noisy than black powder also they were not putting a full charge in their muskets when they fire them they were just putting in half a charge because it was just trying to make a noise for demonstrating to the members of the public so then as you have to put in a full charge which would be more dangerous and more expensive so why would you also they weren't ramming in musket balls now if a gun has to push a missile out of the front it makes more noise because that missile holds back all that riot of expanding gas until it suddenly Pop's at the front of the barrel with a much sharper louder pop but if you're just shunting a load of gas out the front of a tube it's still very loud but it's not as loud so they were using less noisy ammunition they were using less of it and they weren't actually firing a ball so for three reasons they were considerably less loud than the musket actually would be in a real fight and yet every time they fired those muskets every single car alarm went off in the multi-story car park across the road every single time didn't stop them doing it though which I thought was mildly amusing so guns are very loud so what's this then you see a lot of people will say what's a silencer isn't it because that's what they call it in movies and people generally know this this sort of thing as a silencer but people know a lot more about guns and a bit more smug and superior might say ah that's a suppressor they might call it a suppressor because it doesn't silence a pistol it just makes it less amazingly noisy now 115 decibels is equal to a loud rock concert and hundred twenty five is supposedly equal to a pneumatic rivet er four feet from you and yet 115 and 25 were the recordings that I saw someone get off a silenced pistol the pistol was being fired here and about four feet to the rider SOB's about the same distance as that pneumatic Riveter was the decibel meter and those are the readings he got for two different silenced pistols so yeah even a silenced pistol it seems is pretty flippin loud just not actually air bursting now why are they so loud well one of the reasons is that the bullets coming out of them are going supersonic so you will always get a very loud crack from the sonic boom of the supersonic ammunition like that that's a sharp whip crack noise you hear when someone gets the end of a whip going so fast it actually breaks the sound barrier now that being the case it is possible that these can be fair quiet if you use subsonic ammunition which does exist now remember in the film casino when they kill someone using weapons like this in the street you just heard the clicking of the sliders and the bolts and you can actually hear any bang noise II so that's quite unusual but by and large in the movies what you hear when someone fires one of these is a sort of a noise I've never I don't know what that based on my god feeling it's just a Hollywood trope and that there are no guns that go eat but what the help that's what audiences it seems of being taught to expect and so that's what movie me makers give them so it possible to silence a gun properly well I read several times that the British managed to do this in World War two and that the mark for Sten gun which is actually a submachine gun or machine pistol if you prefer was so quiet that when it was fired all you could hear was the clicking of the bolt which make me think well why didn't they just put felt pads on the bolt but anyway supposedly that's all you could hear and that there was no discernible bang noise but in view of everything else I've been saying I was a little bit skeptical but here's some I think fairly strong evidence this is a translation of the memoirs of Otto Skorzeny he was probably most famous for his daring rescue or kidnap depending on how you look at it by a glider-borne force of Mussolini now he got hold of one of these silent Sten guns and he writes in his memoirs in this way I became the first man in Germany to handle this device I was most enthusiastic about the military possibilities of the weapon in its revised form a reconnaissance party armed with it would avoid a lot of casualties in the event of an unexpected meeting with the enemy there would be no sound of firing to give it away I felt sure that every soldier on an assault or reconnaissance mission would be enthusiastic about such a weapon but the Ordnance Department in Berlin thought otherwise I demonstrated the silencer to some high-ranking officers in freedom tile one evening it was darkened we were walking in a park I arranged that a soldier just behind us should fire off a whole magazine into the air my superior were amazed when I subsequently showed them the entry empty cartridge cases on the ground but objections were offered just the same it was said that the force of impact was too small and accuracy was adversely affected by the silencer others now joined me in advocating the production of the simpler and pretty accurate Sten gun in it simple and it's employment by the German army it could be rubbed in mud but it would still fire in contrast our machine pistols which got upset with just even a little dust anyway he didn't get his way and but he says that whilst walking in a park at night you could fire off an entire magazine behind someone and he wouldn't notice he wouldn't even believe that you'd done it when you showed him the evidence of the cartridges on the ground so it seems that you can actually silenced a weapon
